Dan Balz's Take
Obama's Accidental Sister Souljah Moment

Rev. Jesse Jackson holds a campaign sign for Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), in Chicago last February. (Associated Press)
By Dan Balz
Barack Obama leads a charmed life. He finally had his Sister Souljah moment and didn't even have to show up. Jesse Jackson did it for him solo.
Sixteen years ago, Bill Clinton used a Jackson-sponsored forum to rebuke the rap singer for suggesting that black people "have a week and kill white people" rather than each other. Jackson fumed as Clinton made the comments and denounced them later. Politically, Clinton came out such a winner that "Sister Souljah moment" now has its own entry in Wikipedia.
Roll forward to this week and the controversy that is attracting so much attention. Obama did not have to rebuke an important constituency himself to define himself as different from the Jackson-Sharpton wing of the Democratic Party. Being attacked by Jackson was more than enough to get across the point. Whatever people may know or think they know about Obama, they can no longer mistake him as a direct descendant of old-style black politics.
Jackson's multiple apologies attest to the harm the civil rights leader knows he did to himself. His crude comment, captured on an open microphone on Fox News, was so out of bounds that even Jackson's son, a national co-chair of Obama's campaign, leaped to condemn "the ugly rhetoric" and urged his father to keep his mouth shut. Jackson has certainly diminished himself and, given the fact that he attacked the first African American to lead a major party into a general election, likely hurt himself in particular within the black community.
The full extent of Jackson's grievances with Obama may never be known. The direct reference that led to the raw remark came over Obama's embrace of faith-based programs to help deliver social welfare assistance, although there was also a suggestion that Jackson was troubled by other ways he believed Obama was talking down to black audiences.
Whatever his disagreements, Jackson's outburst suggested that he has some fundamental disagreements with Obama's worldview. The more he makes that clear, the better it's likely to be for Obama. Jackson is an old-fashioned liberal with an abiding faith in government, for which he makes no apologies. He has kept that flame burning for many years.
But he is also trapped in a battle that was resolved within the Democratic Party long ago, when Bill Clinton declared the era of big government over. The party is comfortable with both governmental and non-governmental solutions and Obama is on the other side of that divide. He speaks in a language that is foreign to Jackson's ears.
In one of his apologies, Jackson compounded his problems, as he sought to define Obama's candidacy only in the context of his own history in the civil rights movement. There's no question that Jackson's presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988 helped pave the way for Obama (and Jackson's demand for proportional distribution of delegates turned out to be Obama's secret weapon in his race against Hillary Clinton).
While Obama has acknowledged his debt to those who led the civil rights movement, he has never sought to define his candidacy or his politics strictly in a racial context. Even in attempting to praise Obama, Jackson left the impression that he is unhappy with the way Obama has projected his candidacy, or would like all Americans to see it strictly through the prism of civil rights.
Obama has been reluctant to pick fights within the Democratic family. He has not tried to define himself by taking issue with one faction or another, as Bill Clinton did when he was running. He has often floated above the party on his rhetorical message of change and new politics.
Obama also has long appealed more to upscale, well-educated voters than to downscale and less-educated voters, in part because his reform message plays better in those wealthier precincts. Finding ways to talk more directly to hard-pressed working families has been a major priority ever since he lost the Ohio primary to Clinton in March.
If Obama were looking for a way to endear himself more to those white, working class voters who were resistant to his appeals in the Democratic primaries, nothing is likely to help more than a condemnation from Jesse Jackson.
Racial politics certainly still exists in this country. Obama was damaged by the remarks of his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., and will still face skepticism and hostility among some voters because of the color of his skin -- no matter how strongly he denounced Wright last spring. Jackson's vulgar denigration won't erase questions about Obama's long association with Wright, but may serve Obama's purposes in pointing to the sizable generational division in black politics.
Perhaps Jackson will find enough ways to apologize to make this controversy disappear quickly. By the time the campaign ends, the episode may be remembered only as a footnote or less. But as a moment, it has served Obama nicely -- and he didn't have to do anything other than happily accept Jackson's apology.

Common Jesse, you have a strong legacy and it will never be forgotten. Try to change into something else while still being you. It's all about the mind-set. Embrace the prevailing momentum because your prayers have been heard. Above all be happy and show it. You are in new place and time. You do not have to be nostalgic to your past struggle. It has finally bared fruit and Obama is proof of that and he is about to take it into a completely new dimension and even beyond. Why? Because God has given each and everyone of us a different purpose. We have embraced yours and now it is time for you to happily embrace those of others. Besides, that STRUGGLE of HUMANITY for HUMANITY continues and tomorrow Obama himself will have to hand it over to someone else who will serve his or her own purpose by restarting a brand new chapter towards another higher dimension - and it never stops. It is never a snapshot, it is a motin picture. Happiness and Peace to us all, to u Jesse and to Obama!!!!

"He quickly turned his back on Sista Soulja (someone who is passionate about the empowerment of the black community), to get on the band wagon with Bill Clinton. AND Bill, indeed a great president, simply used a great public relations campaign to schmooze blacks. Play a sax, smoke weed, office in Harlem...and he won us over!"
Geez, why do black people get on Clinton so bad. Would you have liked the alternatives? He seemed like a pretty competent President to me. If Obama is half a successful, it will surprise the heck out of me.

I feel sorrow for those individuals writing here who are so into their own selfs; their own way, their own thinking, that their own inner bitterness shows up as their only real friend. Racism by bigoted blacks as well as all people cannot be tolerated, but what happens is that people can become the very thing they hate because of their own bitterness and self centered, power hungary thinking. The greatest symptom of patients in mental institutions is their self centered, selfish thinking patterns which causes great inner bitterness; and bitternes is like an acid that destroys the container that holds it and all those others in the general vicinity!

To sum it, He knows that Michelle and Barack are aware of the mess behind their so called "non-profit" organizations, as well as their race-card publicity hustle.
Not only are the Obamas aware, but so are many of the informed and educated blacks in America. Therefore, Jesse and AL can either get on board and pull it together or they shall be exposed.
Jesse and Al have taken advantage of the less fortunate and uneducated blacks for too long. This was Jesse's attempt to use his influence to lure his SMALL following from Barack! People pay Jesse well to do this mess. Once Barack is in, he will be (siff, siff) CUT!

I'm a black woman who's proud of how far her people have come. But as for Jesse Jackson, there's no respect. He is a race card hustler with a skeptical "non-profit" organization. He quickly turned his back on Sista Soulja (someone who is passionate about the empowerment of the black community), to get on the band wagon with Bill Clinton. AND Bill, indeed a great president, simply used a great public relations campaign to schmooze blacks. Play a sax, smoke weed, office in Harlem...and he won us over! Wake up people...Jesse ain't right. He will never be one of the greats.

Apparently you people have nothing better to do than be trashy average whites belittling the intelligent black candidate. Get your head out of your ass and face the facts. McCain is too old and we'll have the same dam economic and social wars we have now. He's Bush's right hand man. Vote for him and you may as well hand Bush a third term. White, Middle-class woman for Democrats, and proud of it!

It's not really a Sister Souljah moment. Obama did not beard the lion in its den. Still it will probably cause some swing voters to warm to him a little bit. But the real question is, how many people will warm to Jesse Jackson over the incident?

Here is the interesting - and sad - part. Obama, like Tiger woods, is only part black.
Yet, since they are successful, that is on what so many key.
What Jesse and Al and the rest of the black racists really are pis#ed at is the fact that Obama has kicked their as*es six ways to Sunday - the preposterous "reverend" title aside.
The reason Jesse wants to cut his nuts out is because he is cutting into his take.
Now that cannot be tolerated.
Remember the dialog between Michael Caine and Steve Martin in the movie "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?" When Caine dryly tells Martin that "this scam, as you refer to it, took me years to perfect."
Right on the money.

I laughed until my eyes watered when I watched Jackson. ALRIGHT JESSE! You tell them! Wow was that amazing.
As crude and rude and hilarious as it was, Jackson has an undeniable and vaild point. Obama does talk down to blacks - and to everyone for that matter. He is a megalomaniacal ultra tweeked narcissist. He knows who he is. He is just really good at hiding his horns (well most of the time.)
Jackson and MLK spent their lives preaching words of encouragement and hope to blacks only to have a smug A-hole come along, take the crown, and then preach negative black libertation theology/ all blacks are screwed because of their skin B.S.... as if people staring at Obama can't see through his ridiculously outmoded philosophy as he stands before them all on the brink of being our next president. You tell him Jesse! Tell him to shove his black liberation bullsh!t where the sun doesn't shine and to stop infecting blacks with his negative views of them.

kt,
Senator Obama has been minding his own home even before he started campaigning. Does his campaigning now take him away from his family? YES! Is it worth it? YES! And if you have listened to his wife speak, she says as a family they made the decision that these sacrifices would be worthwhile for a better future for their children and other American children. So, if you have an issue with Senator Obama pointing out something that he knows something about (his own father was MIA)and that every community needs to hear - including the black community, don't get defensive because he has the courage to speak up and address something difficult. Instead understand that someone may need to hear it to change their life around and to become a parent who actively and consistently participates in the lives of their children. Such parents DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Poor Jesse Jackson. Barack Obama represents different generations and different approaches and Jesse Jackson cannot make the leap. He sees reasons why huge numbers of young men of color are in prison while Barack Obama sees reasons why huge numbers of young men of color can be in law or medical school with proper mentoring. He is moving forward while Jackson is looking backward. Both are looking at the same thing from different angles.

I saw and heard the video of Jackson making his comment. This is an angry man who doesn't seem to understand that time has passed him by. Continuing to look to government for solutions is self-defeating. Government has opened the doors as much as possible without alienating the rest of society. It's now up to black leaders to show their constituents that they must take personal responsibility for closing the remaining gaps. He needs to accept that, like Moses, he will not enter the promised land with his people. A new generation of leaders is needed for the final part of their jouney.

There can never be any more real growth in racial tolerance and harmony as long as big mouthed, bigoted blacks like Wright, Wright's replacement "preacher", Farrakan, Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and all the other bigoted blacks in our midst get the free pass and even praise for their ignorance! It's just like the N-word: in fact it's exactly like the N-word except that blacks use this word on themselves (for centuries) if they are not a pure enough race! not a black enough colored skin as if that matters(except only to the primative cultures.) It's the Pure Arian Race-in reverse! Seriously! It's just as Bill Clinton said in the original "Sister Souljah Moment", because if the word black was replaced with the word white, David Duke could easily be making the remarks. Needless to say, J.J. got a little upset with Bill who was our first black president! Now, if John Rocker and the other whities got the "re-education" gulag (and I agree he should have had some punishment which Rocker greatly recieved for comments that pale(no pun intended) in comparison to J.J.'s), then Wright, Farrakan, J.J., and all the other prideful big mouths need a full life sentence in re-education!! Seriously. No one can take the race situation seriously for very long since such an obviously huge double standard exists that only makes others of different races very mad and wanting to retaliate. We all know that Wright, Farrakan, J.J., and the others will only get the Eddy Murphy treatment on Saturday Night Live with another "Hymietown" skit.. That's all.. Well so much for the racism problem in America; the NAACP is silent, except to blame Geraldine Ferraro-she's the white racist, of course!! in reverse racism fantasy land! So, I'm an old time democrat that's definately going to vote for McCain! McCain is fair. His service more than proves this. Obama conveniently changes his mind too often-that's a little too much change for me! McCain for President!!

If we are called the UNITED states of america why are we so divided when it comes to making our country better. The comments made by jackson are invalid, and obama hasnt thrown anyone under any bus. I agree with obama on the stance that all black people need to take full responsibility of there actions and lives and stop blaming white people and the government. I myself am not an african american but im classified as being black. i have encountered many racial prejudice moments but i dont let it bother me any because i dont live my life hating people. People need to realize that obama is carrying the most heaviest load any candidate will ever carry and he will stumble and make mistakes but at the end of it all i believe he wants to help better our great country with the help of the american citizens.

But not because of their wealth, Dan. Because Obama's message is cerebral in nature, not fear-based or jingoism-based, not featuring the emotionally-loaded and simplistic belligerence of the Right, some familiarity with complex concepts is a big help in understanding why he's the ONLY choice for president.

It is a dumb idea on every level. If this was an off-the-air hot mike comment, Fox had the discretion regarding whether to air it at all. So now we have Rupert Murdock's minions doing Sister Soulja sanitation work? That's rich.
I think the larger message here is one many of us have been saying for years. What Democrat in his right mind would go on Faux News in the first place? Hope it was worth the moment back in the bright lights, Jesse.

You indirectly made my point. We don't have real options. We have to choose between two politicians. McCain has character flaws, Obama has character flaws. Character flaws are a common thread throughout humanity. Since neither candidate really offers true change, I'm voting for a high ideal. In my mind it is the only real choice we have--to vote for a high ideal or to pretend as though there is some sort of pragmatic reasoning behind choosing one of two charlatans? There is no difference, politican=charlatan. If one chooses to participate in the political process, I figure they might as well make a sociopolitical statement.

wikipedia:
Jackson referred to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown" in January 1984 during a conversation with Washington Post reporter Milton Coleman. Jackson at first denied the remarks, then accused Jews of conspiring to defeat him. The Nation of Islam's leader Louis Farrakhan, threatened Coleman in a radio broadcast and issuing a public warning to Jews, made in Jackson's presence: "If you harm this brother [Jackson], it will be the last one you harm." Finally, Jackson apologized during a speech before national Jewish leaders in a Manchester, New Hampshire synagogue.

Do you folks at the Post actually READ any of the posts that get put up on these blogs, or has your threshold for "offensive" gotten so high that it doesn't matter anymore? The posts I'm referring to in this particular case are for this article, "Obama's Accidental 'Sista Souljah' Moment," but there hasn't been a blog on the Post's website that hasn't had a huge share of posts casting doubt on other posters parentage, comparing them to specific anatomic parts, inviting them to perform impossible sexual acts upon themselves, etc.. There are also the others that take racial slurs and bigotry to new heights I never thought I'd see connected with what was once a respectable press institution.
You don't have to be a Luddite to be put off by much of the swill that is posted on these blogs and passing for unfettered "free expression." Is it too much to ask that posters be required to do more than the bare minimum in observing some decorum when responding to articles and to each other? Judging from the non-policing I've seen on your blogsites, apparently it is.

Here's your truth:
1. Remember the rumor and common perception that BHO was a Muslim and how it was affecting middle class christian perceptions of him? His handlers then float the story of two burka wearing women removed from the stage behind him, making him seem non-sympathetic to Muslims. Problem solved.
2. Remember the perception that he didn't have enough armed forces experience compared to McCain? Patreaus magically steps forward and garbage-mouths a hero. Problem solved.
3. Perceived as too pro-black to your working class white constuency, get in an argument with another black leader, and take the moral high ground. White working class loves seeing that. Problem solved.
4. Religious fundamentalists got you down? Promise faith based initiatives. Problem solved.
5. Not enough foreign experience? Try to get the Germans to let you set up a presentation at Brandenburg gate, same place as Kennedy and Reagan made their iconic speeches. Problem solved.
6. Not liked by Latinos in general? Make veiled promises of Americans having to learn Spanish. Problem solved.
I have at least 5 other instances of BHO playing both sides against the middle. What happened to troops out in 9 months? What happened to border security? Gun control? Offshore drilling?
I think you get the picture. Maybe not all of them are race-baiting per se, but definitely a case of manipulation of the media, and most definitely manipulation of the promises made to his Democratic base in order to get in the next level.
He is continually flopping and centering on statements he made to us, and presenting himself as a typical politician rather than the unique individual that he sold us.
I'm angry about the economy, border security, and open ended troop deployment just like everyone else. Just not angry enough to invite a liar into office with my vote.
This guy is not turning out like I thought he would...

Just how many Sister Souljah moments does Obama need?
Distancing himself from the Muslims. DIstancing himself from Rev. Wright. Distancing hismelf from the slacker black fathers.
Distancing himself from his own plans for withdrawl from Iraq
Distancing hismelf from those who oppose FISA
Distancing himself from those who say we don't need our liberties to communicate curtailed
Distancing himself from "insider" Washington
Distancing himself from elitistism
Distancing himself, now, from Jackson, an admittedly irrelevant figure -- but still.
Obama is so distant now that no one really can depend on him to stand near them.
He's two-faced and he's behaving in a weasel-like fashion. He's a true politician who will say anything, do anything and distance himself from anything to get elected.
Better watch him. SUPERDELEGATES -- IT ISN'T TOO LATE!
