Clinton: GOP Should Apologize to America
By Perry Bacon Jr.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has a new stump speech. In Chicago Saturday for the American Federation of Teachers conference, Clinton praised Sen. Barack Obama, used humor to poke at President Bush, Sen. John McCain and the GOP, and sounded wistful about her own presidential run.
Obama was also in Chicago on Saturday, and addressed the conference by satellite today. But Clinton, who received the AFT's backing during the primary, appeared in Obama's hometown yesterday to speak highly of her former rival before an audience of her supporters.
"I can't wait to see Barack raise his hand, take that oath of office and get to work," she told several thousand educators at the conference.
And she jabbed at the Republicans, using a line that drew such applause when Clinton used it earlier this week in New York that Obama borrowed it when he spoke at an event without Clinton on Thursday in Virginia.
"Our president goes to Japan four months before the election that will finally show him the door and says he's going to take global warming seriously," Clinton said. "Then as he's leaving the G-8 conference, says to people around him, 'Goodbye from the biggest polluter world in the world.' You've got to ask yourself, how did this happen to our country?"
Clinton said the last eight years had many "highlights."
"A vice-president who shoots somebody in the face, you couldn't make that up," Clinton said to laughter.
She added, "the Republicans should hold a press conference and apologize to the country and say they're just not going to run anyone for president."
Clinton said little about education policy, a subject that most Democrats largely agree on -- most want more funding for education and some adjusting of the standards of the No Child Left Behind law so that fewer schools are deemed "failing." although Obama has not made the issue a focus of his campaign.
"It feels a bit like a family reunion because I saw you across America," Clinton said, noting many of the members had campaigned for her in a variety of primary states.

ok so seriously if I hear another BS lie like its going to take 10 years or longer to see the effects from drilling offshore and ANWAR im going to puke. You people obviously dont understand economics. Especially with oil its all based of speculation. Trading the same barel of oil sometimes up to 100 times before it is even used. If the US even said it was for sure going to start drilling the price would drop that day and steadly go down because the other companys would have more oil to sell and cheaper just to get rid of it...

Perfect. Hillary complaining about the GOP. Her "husband", President for 8 years and the GOP should say we are sorry? Brillant coming from her. Just like the ones who went before her, Al Gore, Kerry, Dean, and soon Obama...loosers to the Oval Office.

Jen, let me help you with that question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_the_Electric_Car%3F
Now tell me, Jen, what would have happened if oil barrens were not in the White House? How would that have reduced demand for oil, which would have lowered the price and reduced our dependency on middle eastern countries?
Republicans have a one track mind: drill for more oil. The thought of switching to something that doesn't consume more oil is unimaginable to them.
Posted by: Mark | July 15, 2008 9:11 PM
That's right, Jen, the Republican policies which have clearly killed alternative and more efficient energy sources will have an effect for far into the future. That's exactly right. BTW Jen, I have a question for you: Who killed the electric car?
Posted by: Mark | July 15, 2008 9:06 PM
LOL at all the stupid republicans who think off shore drilling and ANWAR will solve the problems at the pump. Don't you people know that the benefits from off shore drilling won't have any affect until like 2019? Since you didn't know that, you also wouldn't know that any affect they had would be insignificant. Off shore drilling and ANWAR are just another excuse to give more money to the oil companies.
How many times do you have to get lied to about oil before you start to realize you are being lied to? Any reasonable person figured it out after we invaded Iraq.

Monica Lewinsky was not the same age as Chelsea Clinton. Are you that stupid? Lying about a blow job so your wife won't find out isn't nearly as bad as lying about weapons of mass destruction to start a war for oil. Why on earth would Hillary need to apologize for Bill's infidelities?
Posted by: john marshall | July 15, 2008 7:38 PM
What an embarrassment. Your husband has sex with an intern the same age as your daughter in the White House no less and then lies about it and you want to run for the highest office in the land. When do we get an apology from either one of you. All we get is lies, lies and more lies. You wouldn't know the truth if it hit you in the face!

The REAL problem is that Obama is not qualified and Hillary is. What were the "Super" Delegates thinking? They voted for the candidate trending DOWN as Hillary was trending UP. She had already won the needed electoral states to guarantee the Democrats in the White House in November. But NO, the "fix it" DNC and the biased media wanted Obama. Now we have a very inexperienced flip flop candidate with any chance of winning dwindling daily. Thanks Super Delegates for your smart and super vote. You doomed the Democrats. We were already in trouble. Pelosi and the Dems have done nothing. And when they have, they agreed with the Republicans! And that includes Obama and FISA. This is all a big joke! Hillary should be the candidate. We need to win and not with some inexperienced flip flopper that has no real understanding of any issues..only saying what he is told to say. Shame on the DNC for RIGGING the Primary election! Shame on the MSM for NOT vetting Obama. They saved that for vetting what these idiots feel is more important, "vetting the veep".

The Dems are terrible with math I understand....but when someone has done the math for you...you cannot refute...so you wander over to a new tactic....the problem is someone will always be able to put you back in your seat with facts.

Jen wrote: "Currently oil and gas are the life blood of all economies."
yes, that's right, that's what the Republicans have done to our economy. They have scratched the backs of the big oil companies as the big oil companies have scratched the backs of the Republicans. In the mean time, the rest of the world is developing efficient alternative energy and we're falling behind. Nowadays, even China has more efficient vehicle standards than the United States. The bottom line is that Republicans have absolutely eliminated any step towards getting us away from oil and using more efficient energy sources. This is well documented on Bush, but he is not the only one. Maybe you ought to do some reading on how Reagan removed the solar panels from the white house as soon as he moved in.

This is absolute nonsense. Republicans talk talk talk about Democrats being the big spenders when the exact opposite is the truth. Republicans held a majority in congress at that time and basically dragged the Democrats around like a beaten up doll. Your party had its chance and it blew it. One more thing on this discussion, it isn't just the price of gas and thelack of the Dems to do anything but tax somebody.
In our area...New England...some of my neighbors have locked in on their heating fuel...at $5.80 a gallon. This is going to kill alot of families bugets...in a matter of a couple of months.
We cannot afford that price...not for the whole winter. It is going to be quite cold here.
I haven't heard anything from the DEMS to try and address this issue in a realistic way.
Posted by: Jen | July 15, 2008 12:57 AM
Yes, "Let's get a few facts straight about the price of gasoline".
In 01 we had 9/11 happen and then the start of the War on Terror with Al Qaida and the Taliban, the build up to and start of the Iraqi war and the continued fight against terrorism...all of them pre 2006 and the election; all of them proclaimed by the Liberal Dems as cause to the rising price of oil and gasoline, and why we should put them in control.
Still the price of oil and gasoline was fairly consistant with the price of inflation.
Weak dollar, I agree is another factor and I spoke of that, especially because oil is traded in US dollars. Yet you claim it is Bush's economic plan.
No, in order to get funding for the war, the Dems added billions of dollars to war funding that had nothing to do with the war, and Bush signed it because the millitary needed the funds that Congress was holding up. Creating a new buearacracy in the latest war bill for education benefits for the military. Selling it as needed for the Vetrans...well why didn't they include that in the defense bill (where it actually belongs). This is just one, I have scores of them, but not the time to pull them up, right now.
They are guilty of rising deficits...check out the latest Farm Bill. Pelosi and Reid made sure that everyone got something in it so they could get the votes to pass it. A Farm bill that is going to cost us hundreds of billions of dollars, by their accounts...not mine. Raising the price of a bushell of corn to over $6.00, as the pay out for subsidies if the market falls below that price...prior to that it was about $3.00 a bushell. Allowing a couple to earn up to $1.5 million dollars and still recieve a direct subsidy of up to $120,000 (that's a 100 x's the paltry economic stimulus check my husband and I got this year). BTW, that direct subsidy is in addition to the first subsidy I spoke of.
The latest spending bill carried with it the 2nd largest earmark spending in the history of Congress....this after the Dems ran on cutting back on earmarks...by I believe 50%...they didn't come close, I believe it was over 12,000 earmarks, it's late here.
Supply and demand. Well with the way the world is going, economies increasing...demand has run up...supply has to increase. Just cutting back on demand will not drop the price of oil, nor increase our economy. Currently oil and gas are the life blood of all economies. You don't put a tourniquet on an injured limb, unless it is a last resort to stem bleeding, the damage done can be irreversible. Cutting off our supply of fossil fuels, just to appease environmentalis and GW Alarmist is not justified to decreasing our demand. Hurting the US economy to save face with the global world is not justifiable. We are not contributing to any climate change...that's for another post, another time, when I have the time to get the info out.
I've looked at the different bills being offered up in Congress...and I will tell you one thing...the Dem proposals have nothing to do with increasing our oil supply one iota. They all consist of punishing Big Oil, blaming the speculators, blaming Americans, etc. Any increase in tax, any more tax cuts, any robbing Peter to pay Paul will come back to you and me paying for it.
Accusing the oil companies for sitting on 68 million acres in oil leases is bunk. They claim that the oil companies have 44 million acres in off shore leases and only working 10 million acres. What they don't tell you is that in April of this year 30 million of the 44 million acres was auctioned off...and it takes about 2 months for the companies to actually receive those leases after the auction, then the permit request, environmental studies, etc. So, no, Big Oil isn't sitting on the off shore leases. They claim that the environmental lawsuits are not correct...that once the leases are auctioned off there are no legal issues. June 20, 2008 there was an AP article (I have since found many more lawsuits like this)concerning Shell receiving a permit from the EPA to drill in Alaska on 179 leases they hold (I don't know the acreage total). The article goes on to say that Shell still could not drill on those leases, as they had about 12 more permits to get, but the kicker is that they have been waiting on a decision from the 9th Circuit Dist. Court (you know the wacky liberal one in CA that all the environmentalist go to fill their lawsuits), on whether they could drill at all...and they had been waiting for over a year on the decision. They have spent over $80 million in the leases, plus $200 million more to get the oil we need. Sitting on them...I don't think so.
I'll tell you one thing...the govt. has failed miserable, they stick their noses in the business of the people, they mandate ethanol (which gives you less mpg and cost more, I am now baking my own bread, as I refuse to pay $3.00+ for a loaf), they point fingers at each other and everyone else, yet refuse to look at themselves and what they've done.
You can't tax our way out of this problem...or any problem...unfortunately that is all the Dems offer us....from Obama right down to your local House Rep. I am not being flip about any of what I said. I do the research, I read alot of the Congressional record, I've seen what they have done and the tactics they have played in the House and Senate.
I have nothing to do with the oil industry, I am a grandmother wanting the best country for my 5 grandchildren. I cannot agree with you that voting for Obama, voting for the Dems will give my grandchildren the best country. Watch for what you wish for...change...it is not always good for you...especially when it will cost you more than you bargained for.
A true energy program needs to include drilling for more oil(not all leases will take 10 yrs to be up and running...I have found some that were completed in less than four yrs). Increasing our energy INDEPENDENCE, finding other means of energy, BUT they have to be cost effective, reliable, and efficent. Introduced gradually, allowing Americans to be able to make their own choice.
I live 6 miles from the nearest store, I live in a very rural area, on back winding roads, with snowy winters. I want and need a vehicle that has weight to it, four wheel drive, and will protect my family if in a crash. Fuel effiecent vehicles might save $$ on gas, but are horrific in crashes. Plus, they do not do well in snow. When you live in a town that cuts their rising expenses, you have to rely on yourself and know that the roads won't be plowed until the storm is over or almost over. At my age I am not about to walk to the grocery store that is 6 miles away.

Word of advice: if you are going to complain about how dumb other people are, be prepared to exhibit your own intelligence, rather than making childish spelling mistakes ("puppit," "Lunny" looney?], "rateing"). William Buckley you ain't.
Posted by: Dumborat (oh, how clever!) | July 14, 2008 11:00 PM
There is a lot of ignorance in the postings below. Let's get a few facts straight about the price of gasoline.
Middle east instability causes higher oil prices which causes higher gas prices. There is no doubt in the world that Bush is to blame for this: starting a war with Iraq and threats against Iran rather than diplomacy.
What also causes higher oil prices is a weak dollar, which is a result of the Bush economic policy. Republicans like to tell us that deficits don't matter. Yet it is widely known that outrageous deficits and spending cause the dollar to fall which causes oil prices to rise. So you can blame Bush's team again for higher oil prices here.
Finally, there are two realistic approaches to cutting down the cost of gasoline: (1) increasing supply and (2) reducing demand. If you listen to Republicans, they try to paint the picture of needing to drill for more oil in environmentally sensitive areas as the only solution. That's because they're afraid to acknowledge that they fought very hard AGAINST (2). The Bush administration has rewound energy efficiency standards and tried hard to prevent states like California from demanding higher vehicle standards. Now why would they do such a thing? The answer is obvious: Bush comes from the oil industry and the oil industry is the biggest funder of the Republican party.
This election people have a choice, between supporting the big oil policies that the Republicans have pushed on us for the last 8 years, or the choice of going another direction which benefits the people rather than the Exxon's and Enron's. What will your choice be? Big oil or change? I know mine.

You listen to all the party talking points and really believe all the BULL that's thrown at you. Obama is nothing more than a puppit for the Lunny Left wing. And with the Dummyrats in control of congress and a low rateing of 9%, how can anything get done in Washington.
Gas is in the $4.50 range and Ms Pelosi and bumblebrain Reid won"t allow a vote on wheather to Drill in ANWAR or offshore. And all of you complain about the GOP.
The only thing I can say is, now I fully understand why the Donkey is the logo of the ''DUMBORAT'' party. I guess because the Donkey is nothing more than an ASS.
Posted by: Robert Fial | July 14, 2008 9:00 PM
Man, talk about a bunch of brainwashed idiots.
You blame the Republicans for everything...well here some facts:
Gasoline was $2.33 per gallon in Jan 07 per the EIA. Then Pelosi and Reid came in with their "Commonsense plan to lower gas prices" The Dem House immediately went into their "100 Hours". On the agenda was to repeal tax breaks to American oil companies. Tax breaks that were given to large manufacturing and industry companies.
Over the course of the year the battle was on...in Dec 07 the Dems won and the Clean Air Act was passed with these cuts. Gasoline in Jan 08 was $3.04 per the EIA...today the av. is $4.11. Do you like the $1.78 more you are paying (remember in Jan 07 it was $2.33)...in just a yr and a half of Dem control?
We the American people are now paying for those tax break cuts...Thank Pelosi and company for that. Oh and just so you know...in Jan 01 gasoline was going for $1.45. In the 6 years that Bush and Republicans were in control we saw $0.88 increase total, comes out to about $0.14 per year.
The green groups who support the Democratic party with 91% of campaign contibutions have caused more pain for the America people with their demands that we not drill, use "renewable"...nobody looked at the consequences of their actions...just marched to the tune of their campaign money. Food is fuel for the body...period!
The Dems were going to cut back on wasteful spending, yet tacked onto every bill funding that was not needed....raising the costs of needed bills by billions in each bill. Now our dollar is worth crap.
You have Dems in control of Banking...writing a bill to protect Countrywide...funny those Dems have mortgages from Countrywide...with special deals...but you claim the Dems are not corrupt...they are as corrupt as anyone else!
Yeah vote Democrat and watch our country sink to third world levels.
You can spin this anyway you want, but those are the facts...you can't change them.

No, Hillary, the public does not want the GOP to give an ingenuous apology -- they are not sorry for helping business to plunder America to increase profits. George W. Bush, head of the organized GOP crime family, should be prosecuted for his many high crimes, but Dems in Congress are afraid to confront him. Nancy "no cajones" Pelosi quivers in Bush's presence.

Let's see, Bill Clinton commits a social blunder. Hillary Clinton wants universal health care. Bush Administration kills thousands.
And some want to vote for McCaine(Bush 3).
The dumbing-down of America continues.

Vote for McCain...he will put your chilluns in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lower Slobiovia, and France. He will let gas go to $10 a gallon... and will make everyone on Social Security go back to work at WalMart so that they can get discount food.

Clintonitis is a disease of the digestive tract...sorta like dysentery. Bill and Hillary have flung so much crap at Mr. Obama that I'm not surprised Obama hasn't gone to selling fertilizer.
This Country does not need any more bouts of Clintonitis. The cure for Clintonitis is VOTE OBAMA.

Deval Patrick, the "Yes We Can," governor of Massachusetts and Obama best friend, now indicates that he's hankering for a post in the Obama administration.
Seems that all the good speechifying to get elected governor didn't do anything to solve the state's problems.
We now have a $1B+ deficit and Mr. "I don't know how to read financial statements," is looking to bail.
Look for the same in the new Mr. "Yes We Can."
Talk is cheap folks.
Just ask the citizens of Mass. how a smart, Harvard Law grad with ZERO experience in crafting legislation and building coalitions worked out.
But the old liberal white guilt sure worked to get him elected. (does any of this sound familiar?)
The rules of nature still have not changed. Experience really does matter.
Obama: not qualified to be president.

but first...they should all have to stand up and say...no I'm not smarter than a fifth grader....
And then when the GOP is done, how about every person in Congress apologizes to us for the big, fat mess we find ourselves in?
None of them have done their jobs.
Congress, you're FIRED.

The Clintons Should Apologize to America!
....for opening the doors for the Bush administration in so many ways!
Without the Monica crap, america would be so much better off. Monica was used by the GOP to gain total control using "Family Values" lies.
Without Bill's lies, Bush would have not been as automatically forgiven as he is now.
Without Hillary's campaign of lies, america would be less divided.

You, and those like you, democrats who would squander this opportunity for a progressive agenda (one almost identical to HRC's of course) to "hold your nose" and vote a protest vote: if-only's don't cut it in a competition... The losing team that claims the underdog team shouldn't have won is usually called a "poor sport." If BO is so inexperienced, how did he over-take the front-runner with years of political connections and capital and manage to be the only candidate running of the three to have a financially profitable campaign (rather than huge debt like Clinton and McCain)? How did he manage to out-organize the HRC campaign by not neglecting the caucus states? Even some of HRC's supporters acknowledge now that there were clear strategic errors in her management of her campaign that had nothing to do with sexism or BO somehow "stealing" the nomination from her. Why are HRC supporters not saying their "if onlys" about HRC's campaign strategies? If only she'd focused on caucus states; if only she'd planned to run after Super Tuesday; if only she'd kept Bill on the sidelines; if only she'd not chosen Mark Penn as her chief strategist... I'm sure she's re-visiting those decisions because there was every reason to believe and every favorable condition that she would win the nomination at the beginning of the primary season.
Both Obama and Clinton are strong candidates and democrats should be proud that our party put forth a female and African-American candidates who are pro-universal health care, pro-choice, want to end the war, and pro-middle class families. Stop being poor sports and do what's right for the country - do you really believe John McCain will bring people into his administration that reflect your values? The president is only the leader that sets the tone and agenda - the people they put around them are crucial to how our country goes forward. If people haven't learned that from this administration, they haven't been paying attention. Whatever "inexperience" Obama has, I believe he will surround himself with good people.
What will HRC supporters who are threatening to vote McCain or not vote do if HRC is in line to have a key role in the administration? How will voting for McCain help HRC's agenda in the Senate if we have a split executive/legislative branch again? Think. At the same time that I write this, I realize I'm wasting my breath, because it's emotional for those like American Voter, not rational.

Gotta love it. Dumping again on the Clintons to hide your embarrassment after nominating the weakest democratic nominee since Carter. You made your bed; deal with it.

What a lame comment, and just shows that the Dems want totalitarian control of the government! Did the Dems apologize for the Carter's terrible administration and did Bill as he bog the country down on his philandering with young intern IN THE OVAL OFFICE! However, Democratic Senators and hypocrites Biden and Kennedy put Clarence Thomas through a smear hearing on far lesser allegations!

RE APOLOGIES
Bush couldn't apopogize enough on a hundred years.
Obama needs to apologize and hand over to Clinton. Had his Wright dealings been know before the first 11 primaries, she would have won. It was nip and tuck after that.

re: "Clintons apologizing to America..."
howlless is right on this one. WHO, exactly, owes the apology?
The Onion put it perfectly, in their January 17, 2001, edition when they ran the headline --
"Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'"
Who's sorry now?
Posted by: Waiting For Godot | July 14, 2008 1:39 PM
All of America should stand up and
C H E E R ! ! ! when Bush and Cheney
leave office. Then the COURTS should
take over and try them both for Crimes
against the American people. I wonder
how much Dick Cheney has profited since
he became Vice President? Which is illegal. Profiteering during war time.
Let's send them both to Jail.

"The Clintons Should Apologize to America!"???
Yeah, that would go something like:
Dear America. Sorry we created 20 million new jobs, cut taxes for millions of working Americans, ended Welfare, guaranteed national family leave, doubled the stock market, turned record budget deficits into surpluses, successfully resolved the Bosnian genocide and and left with our national reputation at an all-time high around the world.
Our sincerest apologies for our competence.

Let McCain be McCain...he shows just how much he knows every time he opens his mouth and his friends do too...NOTHING.
So, I agree with the peon who called for Obama to shut up. He can win just letting McCain talk about what he will do *to* this country if he is elected President.
Vote Democratic in November!

The GOP has a lot to apologize for, but keeping Ms. Inevitable at a distance isn't one of them. All now thank Sen. Obama, MorOn, The Daily Klutz and all those college kids striving for that "A" (or is it just "Pass" now?) from "teach" (that balding guy in frayed bell-bottoms who says he "coulda gone to Woodstock") for smashing the Hag. No apology needed, just keep the candidate's head down: Huma's Jeddah jihadis, Broadbase Betty's Snit Brigade and the husband's Arkansas State Police sharpshooters ("Us'n don't nivver miss") are itching for that "Vince Foster" moment.

Too many news media and TV analysts show a lack of knowledge of basic civics when they say, without qualification, that THE DEMOCRATS CONTROL THE CONGRESS. This wrong information misleads the public and falsely raises expectations.
Until the Democrats have a VETO proof majority in the SENATE and have a SENATE majority sufficient to PREVENT A FILABUSTER, they ULTIMATELY control very little. Remember the Republicans SIMULTANEOUSLY controlled BOTH THE PRESIDENCY AND THE CONGRESS FOR OVER SIX YEARS. Look at the messes!! If the voters expect fairness to them, they need, in fairness, to give the Democrats THAT SAME CONTROL if they can expect real and postive changes. While untying the hands of the Demcrats via this majority they will need to effect change is no guarantee, not doing so WILL GUARANTEE tying their hands.

The Republicans are the party of waste and destruction, ignorance and obsession and have demonstrated that at every opportunity. And the worst of it is that they claim they are doing us right. IF you can call thumbing your nose at the world over global warming for seven years, starting a war on fictitious information, running us into the financial ditch, and stopping every initiative in Congress that might have done us some good here at home the work of anyone interested in progress for this nation, you have a severely different look at the world than the rest of us. This administration will go down as the worst in our history and the GOP is likely to go down right behind it when it gets behind McCain.

Your taxes would go up.Government would become more powerful. Welfare checks would go up and to more people. Millions would be granted amnesty. Population would grow much more.
And as I have said before. Nobama has had a lot of 'change' lately or is it flip-flop? If he is learning, the White House is no place for 'on-the-job' training.

Clinton did apologize - and his adultery didn't drag this country into a recession.
The GOP seems to think they've done a fine job, contrary to the actual State of the Union. Hence the call for apology.
ex:
"We tried our best, but since we assed it up, we are sorry."

Who is better?
1. One who takes the country on a murderous and bloody path in the name of make believe war on terror and put the country in tremendous debt, economical disaster, non-sense all children left behind stupidity?
Or
2. Someone who has a girl friend(s) outside his marriage, but at the same time eliminates the debt, improves education, invests in infra-structures, improved savings?
