'Tasteless and Offensive' New Yorker Cover Riles Obama Camp

By Perry Bacon Jr.
Sen. Barack Obama's campaign sharply rebuked the New Yorker magazine for its cover this week which displays Obama in a turban fist-bumping a gun-toting rendering of his wife in the magazine's attempt to mock right-wing Obama critics.
"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree" said Obama spokesman Bill Burton in a statement.
In a press conference on Sunday afternoon, the candidate had refused to comment about it, saying "I have no response to that" when asked by a reporter in San Diego.
For more on this story, see Howard Kurtz's interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick in his Media Notes column today, and Nico Pitney's exchange with cartoonist Barry Blitt, who drew the cover. Huffington Post media columnist Rachel Sklar has more here.

The facts are :
i ) the Whitehouse is respectable institution and should not be denigrated in any satire cartoon;
ii) to date there are no attested authentic photographs of Michelle Obama wearing fatigues and carrying a rifle slung over her shoulder ;
iii) there are no official photographs of Barak and Michelle Obama being granted carte blanche access into the Whitehouse ;
iv) there are no authentic photographs of Barak and Michelle Obama burning any flag including the American flag in public or in the Whitehouse ; etc etc

Some editor drinking too much caffeine coffee and smoking some cuban cigar and coughing like mad hit his fist on the table and scattered the papers and pens and guffawed at his own wild demented dark rabid joke that he worships at his pseudo shrine called sick satire!
This was and is some sick joke that was flushed down the gutter by someone else and picked up and washed and sprayed with scented perfume and varnished and put aside to dry and then patched up and posted as satire in what used to a respectable iconic magazine.
Sad poor journalistic taste by what may be remote controlled manipulated editors standing on the auction block of insanity. Trashy media has marched into the ivory palaces of media moguls and put their mud dripping boots on the elephant leather sofa's of the office of the ministry mindset opinion with the open agenda of trashing the respectability of hardworking dedicated American's like Barak and Michelle Obama. GOOD GRIEF! WHERE on earth did you learn to write? You need to go back to Freshman Comp and learn how to write coherent, spare sentences. Read a little John Steinbeck or Ernest Hemingway. Knock off the flowery hyperbole. With an introductory sentence like that, why would anyone bother to continue reading?!
"People have integrity and high moral standards and are tired of trashy journalism."
EXACTLY! And your opening sentence, with all due respect, is PURE TRASH.

I am a second generation descendant of mixed race parents and was born in Africa. In Rhodesia prior to 1931,(the year my father was born) and a few years after that there was a law of miscegenation that made it illegal for any person to marry across the so called " colour bar". So called " ...apartheid ..." was viewed as "...normal...". My father , who is still alive, tells us that when he was a child ,they had to hide whenever the British South African Police ( BSAP) visited their place of residence. The reason being miscegenation was illegal and any mixed race children had to surrendered to the ".. state .." .In other words, the "...apartheid system..." provided a " ...class system.." whereby the notion that :
"....IF YOU'RE AIN'T WHITE, YOU AIN'T RIGHT..." was unilaterally imposed on the mixed race people who were regarded as "...MONGRELS...". I THANK GOD THAT I AM CHRISTIAN because as a Christian I can praise God that though MAN LOOKS AT THE OUTWARD APPEARANCE, GOD LOOKS AT THE HEART.
Skin colour is only skin deep. I do not hate anyone because of their skin colour. I believe all of mankind are God's Creation put on this earth to worship and glorify God.The sad thing is that through personal choice some worship the mighty dollar, the GOD OF MAMMON, others worship the sun, others worship the moon, others worship crocodiles, others worship snakes, others worship themselves and others worship every false god under the sun instead of worshipping the ONE THAT CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH AND BECAME FLEAH TO DIE ON A RUGGED CROSS ON GOLGOTHA'S HILL. BEFORE HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE ON THE CROSS HE SAID THESE WORDS "....FATHER,FORGIVE THEM THEY NOT WHAT THEY ARE DOING......"
The good news of the gospel is that the Lord Jesus Christ arose from the dead. All religions have a founder. Religion is man reaching up to God , Christianity is God reaching down to man. Christianity is the only religion that the founder died and arose again. Christians are taught by the Lord Jesus Christ about the power of forgiveness and God gives His children His power and His Love to look beyond the faults and see the needs.
As a "..second generation mixed race person.." I am "..Black..". I do not hate anyone because of the colour of their skin. I remember when I was about 10 years old I was told by "...a fair skinned mixed race school freind..." that the reason why "... your family members are fair and you are dark is that you were born at mid day!!!!...." . That was just child talk! It didn't think at that early age that skin colour was a "...WORLD WIDE RACE ISSUE....". The innocent years of childhood!!!!!
The carefree years of no prejudice!!!
I had grown up in Christian home . My mother and father Christians. My mother to her dying day loved God and taught us about the power of forgiveness. She died of cancer. But right up to her dying day, we would gather around her hospital bed and pray with her. She died in Christian faith. Before she died , she would always tell us to love one another, pray and have faith in God. Read the Bible, live a holy life, follow the golden rule and do unto others what we would have them do unto us. She would always say. "...I will see you in the rapture...."
When I was in Africa, Zimbabwe, as a retired Mining Commissioner, I worked as a mining consultant and was investigating a mining claims dispute for a Gold miner. He had a "..bakkie..".A van. In Africa, Zimbabwe , right up to the early eighties , it was not an uncommon sight to see a white farmer driving his van or "..bakkie.." with his dog sitting in the front seat and the "..farm worker.." sitting at the back. Not all white farmers would do that. In fact the number of white farmers that had their farm workers sitting on the front seat and their dog at the back of their "..bakkie..." outnumbered the number of those who had their farm workers sitting at the back seat!!!
The point is nobody made a fuss. It was live and let live. Zimbabweans are good honest loving people. Anyway, I was investigating this mining claims dispute and I was sitting in the front of the bakkie with the Gold Miner. A normal thing to do in Zimbabwe!!! Dogs sit at the back, people sit in front!!! Well, the Gold Miner, who was white, drove around everyday with no shoes , hated shoes!!!Hated to wear a shirt. Kept over 200 budgies as a hobby!!! On this particular day, he had bought bird seed for his "...birds..." and wanted to quickly "...drop off the bird seed at home..." .So we drove to his home. His wife and daughter seen us driving up. The wife greeted me politely. Respectfully. (Which is normal in Zimbabwe).Asked what I was drinking. I told her Mazoe Orange would be fine. She brought the drink and sat and talked with me in the verandah while her husband
went to get his shoes inside and put on a shirt so that we could go to the Police Station to make a statement about the mining claims dispute.
While I was waiting for him to get his shoes the wife was apologizing for a comment her four year old daughter had made when we had arrived at the farm residence.
The daughter had innocently asked the question "...Daddy, why do you let the MOONT ( a black person) ride in the front of the bakkie, he should sit at the back with the dogs!!!!"
The innocence of youth!!! Errol Smythe

The reptilian underbelly of gutter swirl profile politics has slithered on the editorial pages of modern day journalism leaving a trail of distaste, disgust and mistrust of what used to be iconic media status of respectable and responsible journalism.
A sad day of the media. Some people just don't know where to draw the line between editorial sensational media gutter garbage and good editorial sound judgement. A few resignations may be in order from those responsible for smearing gutter mud swirl on the banner of freedom of the press and shredding good editorial judgement versus low taste perverted satirical comedy to control the damage the media credibility has suffered.
The red flags on this "...journalistic boo boo..." is egg on the faces of all those that had their laughs around the editor's coffee table when he approved this cartoon picture of the politics of fear.
Word on the street is that some media agencies have no respect for the good taste of their subscribers and that such media agencies have a hidden agenda to brainwash targeted sectors of the community so that they can impose a predetermined mindset that is stereotyped to be offensive distasteful and down right mean and dirty.
There was a serious breech of good sound judgement by the editorial department of the New Yorker Magazine.
Were a few giggles and laughs around the cartoonist's coffee meeting table worth it?
This hidden agenda to derail Barak Obama and Michelle Obama's respectablity is downright dirty and mean and represents the reptilian underbelly of gutter journalism .
People have integrity and high moral standards and are tired of trashy journalism.
If certain media agencies want to continue to sensationalize swirl and stereotype certain high profile people including Barak and Michelle Obama with patchwork profiling that stretches the credibilty of good journalism just for a few giggles and a few laughs by a few staff members employed by such media agencies, then mass cancellations of subscriptions to bankrupt trashy journalism may be the panacea to such irresponsibility.
Respect should not be just a by word.
Falling standards shred and tatter the banner of respectabilty and corrupt responsible journalism and throws gutter mud on the respectability and patriotism of American citizens and is disrespectful and downright mean and dirty to all patriots including Barak and Michelle Obama .
Time for a change in Editorial policy . Freedom of the press can only be a defence for good accurate responsible journalism and not for bad inaccurate irresponsible journalism that is devisive and incites racial prejudice and is a threat to tatsteful respectful and credible journalism. Was wondering what the name KU KLUX KLAN means, and where it came from... Found this online:
From EtymolOnline:
"1867, Amer.Eng., Kuklux Klan, a made-up name, supposedly from Gk. kyklos "circle" + Eng. clan. Originally an organization of former Confederate officers and soldiers, it was put down by the U.S. military, 1870s. Revived 1915 as a national racist Protestant fraternal organization, it grew to prominence but fractured in the 1930s. It had a smaller national revival 1950s as an anti-civil rights group, later with anti-government leanings."
If the above is true, it implies that the people who started the KKK were fairly educated and well-to-do, doesn't it? (Had always had the impression that KKK was full of uneducated, insecure, in-bred morons who bolstered their sense of worth by injuring/terrorizing other, more vulnerable folks!)
Also found this (at http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h412.html):
"The Ku Klux Klan, first of two organizations using that name, was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee in 1855-56. It started as a well-intentioned social group of former Confederate officers, taking its name from the Greek word kuklos (meaning "circle"). However, its demeanor changed to opposing Republican governments that had been imposed on the South during Reconstruction. The Klan also began to preach a doctrine of white supremacy in reaction to the appearance of freed blacks in government and other parts of Southern society.
Klan members dressed themselves in white sheets or robes and wore masks to disguise their identities. They staged silent marches and threatening midnight horseback rides, leading untutored former slaves to believe that the ghosts of the Confederate dead had risen to reclaim their land. In many areas threats gave way to beatings, whippings, mutilations and lynchings. Black voters, scalawags and carpetbaggers were all targets of this violence. Such actions were defended by some Klansmen as a means of protecting white womanhood."
(That last part sounds like Adam's excuse: The woman made me do it!)

This is a subtle and heady attack on FOX News and all the ridiculous misconceptions they are promoting. Some twit on FOX News had the nerve to suggest Brack and Michelle Obamas' fist bump was a terrorist/gang signal. That's where this stems from. If you want to be outraged about something, make it the nonsense that is spread, not a top notch publication's commentray on it.

"He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool."
The New Yorker cartoon was a direct strike at the heart of Christianity. Like the gutless, spineless fool in the whitehouse who sold America out to the lobbyists in Washington, Christians who do not stand up to this sick propaganda, deserve every evil bestowed upon them. I will not have my faith threatened by these people! The people who are condoning this cartoon are the real enemies of this great country. I will burn every New Yorker I can get my hands on.

I definitely think that rather than exposing prejudices, this cartoon only enforces it. It is like making a cartoon about holocaust to bring about the point that some people do not believe in it or that it was exaggerated by the jews. I am sure that would not be funny. This country is so frigging biased. Obama is not even african american in the true sense, he is mixed. The guy's father left him at the age of 2. He is raised in a white family. He is essentially white in his upbringing. Imagine so much prejudice when that is the case. Can you imagine a real african american
trying to become american president. Prejudices take long time to go away. It is very clear from these cartoons.

Many white Americans are so racist, they will not vote for a non-white candidate, no matter how well-qualified; they are also so cowardly that they will scour the earth to find a stealth reason to justify their bigoted decision.

Perhaps we need to do IQ and current affairs knowledge testing to license people to vote.
This would have a devastating impact on the Republican party, talk radio, and Fox News, of course.
But it would save the republic from the simplistic hate of GOP voters.

Clearly, the difference between me and you is that I don't appreciate gutter politics in the media that benefit one side or the other.
What, exactly, do you mean by "free ride"? From what I viewed, Barrack had more than his share of media attacks, primarily rooted in his spiritual life and/or those who he knows or has known.
The point is, that when American's endorse these tactics in the media, they truely show how "dumbed down" society has become. Our children are dumber than those in all other industrialized nations and it is because their parents cannot raise themselves about this kind of stupidity.
If you like it, and get a juvenile thrill from a hate mongering and anti-american media, you most certainly have that right.
However, in doing such, you represent the worst part of what has become a morally broken nation.

Funny how that works out.

This would not be a problem if it were not for the scores of people who don't/won't read. If we had an educated electorate who actually knew the definition of satire let alone had the ability to spot it when they saw it. But the unfortunate truth of the matter is ours has become a nation of idiots as a result of laziness and closed mindedness. Unwilling to think for ourselves, because it's too much like work I guess, we instead choose to take on the views of whatever loud obnoxious blowhard who most comfortablly fit our preconcieved notions of what is true and good. See the problem with the caricature is now people will assume this is a true depiction of what goes on in the Obama house... and many of you already know that!

The latest Newsweek poll reports (according to Chris Matthews) that about one in four people polled believe Obama was raised as a Muslim. Matthews proclaims those Americans a wrong. I have read the article written by the reporter from the Los Angeles Times that contains several quotes from sources that are identified by name, including one of Obama's closest friends. That newspaper piece was written just after Obama announced his run for office. The article by Paul Watson belies the Obama campaign web sit claims that Obama never practiced as a Muslim and never prayed in a mosque.
Why has this information not been disputed by Barack Obama. It appears that the claims made by Obama's campaign are fraudlent. The Watson atricle can be read in its entirity at http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/bal-te.obama16mar16,1,7181735,full.story?coll=la-headlines-nation . What other contributors said is set forth in the Watson article. Obama was in fact raised as a Muslim. Even his sister admitted so in the atricle. The Obamma campaign could not get its story right last year and Watson, being a very good journalist, proved the deception by the following passages:
Obama's campaign aides have emphasized his strong Christian beliefs and downplayed any Islamic connection. The Illinois senator was raised "in a secular household in Indonesia by his stepfather and mother," his chief spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said in a statement in January after false reports began circulating that Obama had attended a radical madrasa, or Koranic school, as a child.
"To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago," Gibbs' Jan. 24 statement said. In a statement to The Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, the campaign offered slightly different wording, saying: "Obama has never been a practicing Muslim." The statement added that as a child, Obama had spent time in the neighborhood's Islamic center.
His former Roman Catholic and Muslim teachers, along with two people who were identified by Obama's grade-school teacher as childhood friends, say Obama was registered by his family as a Muslim at both of the schools he attended.
That registration meant that during the third and fourth grades, Obama learned about Islam for two hours each week in religion class.
The childhood friends say Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque. "We prayed but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque. But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played," said Zulfin Adi, who describes himself as among Obama's closest childhood friends.
The campaign's national press secretary, Bill Burton, said Wednesday that the friends were recalling events "that are 40 years old and subject to four decades of other information." Obama's younger sister, Maya Soetoro, said in a statement released by the campaign that the family attended the mosque only "for big communal events," not every Friday.
Can someone write to the Obama campaign and have Obama dispute the passages from Watso's atrivle or admit the Obama campaign is suffering its own "Kosovo" moment? A quarter of the American population is not stupid. How can Obama win the election without coming clean or submitting evidence that Watson and those quoted in the article made the entire story up.
By the way very thoughtful analysis by Common Sense Reader who posted on this subject. I recommend that post to all to read.

I think the following needs to be refuted or Barack Obam's campaign needs to apologize to the rest of us. The L.A. Times article linked below is a real eye-opener. I looked at the Obama web site and it does not square with the reporting by Paul Watson. In fact, the Watson article mentions the Obama campaign flip-flop on being a practicing Muslim. Does anyone have any facts that refute Watson's story? I can't believe that a reporter from such a major newspaper would make that information up. Here is what was posted previously:
This comment below deserves to be aired throughout the country. It is completely factual, well documented and should give any fair-minded reader pause as to whether the Republicans will use their 527s following the Democratic convention to make "swiftboating" an inapplicable metaphor. Will the Democratic Party once again snare defeat from the jaws of victory? Read on.
Free Speech, especially free political speech is guaranteed by the First Amendment and essential to our democracy. I am more offended by the obama campaign's incessant responses to an criticism of leveled in the news media.
The plain and simple truth is that there is sufficient credible evidence that the BO campaign has deliberately misrepresented Obama's past practice of Islam to secure the Democratic Party nomination. The Obama campaign website makes the unsubstantiated claim: "Barack Obama Is Not and Has Never Been a Muslim. Obama never prayed in a mosque. He has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ."
What is Obama hiding. We know that Obama has claimed he has always been a Christian, yet Paul Watson of the L.A. Times Djakarta Bureau published an investigative report replete with numerous accounts that Obama worshiped in mosques and Islamic prayer rooms while he lived in Indonesia. Read the never refuted Watson report for yourselves styled: "Islam an unknown factor in Obama bid," which can be found at: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/bal-te.obama16mar16,1,7181735,full.story?coll=la-headlines-nation .
Here is but one paragraph of the Watson report that has never been specifically refuted by Barack Obama or his campaign:
The childhood friends say Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque. "We prayed but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque. But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played," said Zulfin Adi, who describes himself as among Obama's closest childhood friends.
According to the SWAMP, the Chicago Tribune's political bog of December 22, 2007, Barrack Obama specifically denied EVER practicing Islam. Obama stated: "I've always been a Christian" and "I have never practiced [Islam]." This raise the question: Is Barack Obama an Impostor? Did Obama's answers to direct questions obfuscate the truth? Was Obama deliberately lying to gain the highest office of the land by blatant misrepresentations of material facts that his campaign considers so important that it has dedicated a good portion of its website to support the claim that: " Obama Has Never Been A Muslim, And Is a Committed Christian."
Did Paul Watson fabricate a story about Obama's Muslim prayers at a Djakarta mosque? Were the quotations form the Los Angeles Times report of march 16, 2007, which can be accessed on the Obama website by a hyper-link false? Was the account of one of Obama's closest friend in Djakarta an utter falsehood, which hoodwinked Watson to write: "The childhood friends say Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque. 'We prayed but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque. But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played,' said Zulfin Adi, who describes himself as among Obama's closest childhood friends." What motive to fabricate such basic historical facts did Zulfin Adi and /or Watson have at the time the report was published? I submit none whatsoever.
This is a fundamental question of personal integrity of Obama, not an anti-Muslim attack on a political candidate. Why has the news media missed the big question of whether Obama may have deliberately lied about his past practice of Islam to secure the Democratic nomination.
On January 16, 2007, Obama launched BarackObama.com and issued a press release stating that on February 20, 2007, he would make an announcement on his running for President of the United States, as reported by local Station NBC5 in Chicago. Following that announcement, on January 27, 2007, The Kaltim Post, an Indonesian newspaper carried a story about Obama's Indonesian friends clearly discussing that Obama was a practicing Muslim when he lived in Djakarta, reporting in Indonesian: " Mengenai agama yang dianut sang senator AS, Akhmad Solikhin, wakil kepala SDN 1 Menteng, tidak yakin Barry beragama Islam. . . .menurut Tine sang guru, Barry mengikuti pelajaran agama Islam semasa sekolah." That translates into English as: " Concerning the religion that was followed by the US senator, Akhmad Solikhin, the representative of the SDN head 1 Menteng, was not sure Barry was religious [devoute] in Islam. . . . according to his teacher(guru) Barry took part in the Islam religious lesson during the period of the school." Additionally, another Indonesian newspaper The Benjarmasin Post, in a July 9, 2006 report on Barack Obama's time in Indonesia, based upon Obama's local friends in Djakarta wrote:"Barry dulu memang beragama Islam," which clearly translates into English: " Barry was previously quite religious [in] Islam."
The French philosopher Voltaire, in his often cited quotation on free speech: "Sir, I disagree with every word you are saying, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Go to tis page on the Obama wbsite: http://www.barackobama.com/factcheck/2007/11/12/obama_has_never_been_a_muslim_1.php . There you can be linked to Paul Watson's March 16, 2007 article reporting on eye-witnesses accounts Obama's worshiping in a mosque on Fridays in Djakarta. The link is in the paragraph quoted directly below:
Obama Spokesman Robert Gibbs Issued A Statement Explaining That "Senator Obama Has Never Been A Muslim, Was Not Raised As A Muslim, And Is A Committed Christian." "Obama's campaign aides have emphasized his strong Christian beliefs and downplayed any Islamic connection. The Illinois senator was raised 'in a secular household in Indonesia by his stepfather and mother,' his chief spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said in a statement in January after false reports began circulating that Obama had attended a radical madrasa, or Koranic school, as a child. 'To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago,' Gibbs' Jan. 24 statement said." [Los Angeles Times, 3/16/07]
Just compare the Obama Website's material representations with the Watson story linked to the Obama website and ask yourselves: Why has the Watson story never been specifically refuted by Obama?
This is a fundamental question of personal integrity of Obama, not an anti-Muslim attack on a political candidate. Why has the news media missed the big question of whether Obama may have deliberately lied about his past practice of Islam to secure the Democratic nomination.
Don't let the Obama campaign shout out the TRUTH. E-mail this message to all your friends and relatives because the press in this country has failed in its mission to expose the TRUTH. The press failed to have vetted Obama properly ad now is an ally of the false claims that Obama never practiced Islam and never prayed in a mosque. Good democrats everywhere should expose OBAMA as the IMPOSTOR he is before the Democratic convention and nominate Hillary Clinton, the best and most electable candidate in the field who was cheated out of the nomination by flip-flopping Obama who now sounds more like George W. Bush than old McCain.
Obama has eviscerated his entire raison d'etre of his candidacy. OBAMA IS AN IMPOSTOR. Within one month of his defeating Hillary he has changed positions on withdrawal from Iraq, public finance of elections, the death penalty, hand guns, government funding of faith based organisations (going so far as to support discrimination in employment by those groups for religious reasons) abortion rights(David N. O'Steen, the executive director of National Right to Life, said Obama's recent change of positions "are either quite disingenuous or they reflect that Obama does not know what he is talking about." O'Steen added: "You cannot believe that abortion should not be allowed for mental health reasons and support Roe v Wade.")also Obama flip-flopped on Jerusalem the day after a publicised speech to AIPAC
Obama has flipped more in the last 6 weeks than a short order cook at IHOP. He lacks integrity and has the same personality flaws as George Bush: he is arrogant, dismissive of criticism, stubborn, self-absorbed with his winning two terms and deceitful. He claims to have never practiced Islam, but Paul Watson's investigative report in the March 16, 2007 L.A.Times contains quotations from long time friends of Obama in Djakarta that vigorously dispute Obama's naked claim on the Obama website.

Michelle Obama does not carry the American M-4. She is not proud of her country. She carries the AK-47, the weapon of Communist revolution, the gun of the Rwandan genocide, the rifle of choice for Hugo Chavez and Robert Mugabe.

In response to the artist, executive editor, and readers:
I appreciate and respect any authentic approach of demonstrating our Freedom of Speech and constitutional rights as Americans. Especially in attempts to promote and advocate the general welfare and liberties of the minority, working-class, and middle-class people trying to sustain "livelihood" during this mess of an administration we allow/tolerate.
At the same time, I despise when corporations make light of their capitalistic, money-grubbing antics to sell worthless propaganda to naive and impressionable individuals we unfortunately influence to vote on life decisions.
I can't imagine for one second that this image could be published in "humor" or in "light-heartedness" of Mr. Obama and his wife. If this was the case, why not insert this comical image into one of the middle articles or in a more discreet location of the magazine? Answer: Magazine sales are down and people feel the need to stoop tremendously low to make a buck. When will the real journalist appear? And tackle the issues of the people, not make a mockery of racist or extremist perspectives. If we continue to perpetuate these issues in the slightest degree, why should these people respect these various cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
Simply put, I am embarrassed for you Mr. David Remnick and for the people who share your view of humor. I can picture Hitler laughing at this propaganda just as he laughed at his clever publications.

Really stupid cover. It's so base, blatant and obvious that it isn't even up to the New Yorker's esoteric standards. Hell, half the staff of the magazine doesn't normally even "get" the cartoons they publish. And the idea that because it's a caricature of a stereotype somehow makes it immune to charges of racism is absurd. It's clearly racist and anti-Islam. Just consider this idea to see my point: What if I publish a caricature of the New Yorker's editorial staff as a bunch of "money-changing," Arab-hating, pro-torture, racist, big-nosed Zionist Jews raking in piles of cash from the sales of this issue? Funny? Not at all, I'd be tarred and feathered, because it's not a caricature of the staff or what they said or did, but a caricature of a false, stereotyped perception of NYC highbrow Jews. Not funny; anti-semitic and in bad taste. Boo, New Yorker.

"Why do people keep insisting that these are rumors? 1)Obama was a Muslim. He was raised as one before converting to Christianity! 2)His first political benefactors were terrorists!3)He supported a filibuster against the FISA but voted for it anyway. 4)He sat for 20 years in Rev. Wright's church and heard the sermons!"
Why do people keep insisting that these are rumors? (1) John McCain, family values man, served his wife with divorce papers onher sickbed before marrying his current trophy wife and cokehead. (2) John McCain gave information to the Vietcong and otherwise cooperated with them enough that some of his fellow American soldiers in captivity with him think he was a traitor. (3) John McCain was one of the greasy Keating Five, who should have been prosecuted and would never have run for president, just like George Sr.'s intervention with the SEC on behalf of his corporate criminal son kept the SEC from pressing charges, and gave Bush the chance to be a war and corporate criminal as the worst president, by far, in American history. (4) Cheney the Dick started the Iraq war almost singlehandedly, with he or an aide going to the CIA and browbeating them until they agreed to present false evidence as justification to start this criminal Iraqi war. (5)Bush tried to keep blacks out of his college fraternity, was a heavy alcoholic *and* cocaine freak - you can tell the burnout when he speaks - who has sealed his driving record to hide a likely plethora of drunk driving tickets. (6) Laura Bush ran a stop sign and killed a former boyfriend, and was *never charged*. (7) The Iraqi constitution is a theocracy, *not* a democracy: if you read an English version of it (GOOGLE it), the "ultimate authority" for the constitution, as stated within itself, is Islam.
These are not rumors!

This stinks of Ms. Inevitable's Snit Brigade, anxious to torpedo Sen. Obama before or after the convention, or even after the Inauguration. The airplane incident last week sounds like a test by Huma's Jeddah jihadis and/or the husband's Arkansas State Police sharpshooters ("Us'n don't nivver miss!") to probe the odds of crowning Broadbase Betty as the Democratic nominee via a "Vince Foster" moment.

Like many Americans - black/white; Christian/Muslim - and, perhaps educated and well-read, my initial gut-response to the recent New Yorker magazine cover was incredulity, i.e., "Are you kiddin' me?" After about one minute I realized that the New Yorker audience (the 'choir') would probably turn the page and READ. I suspect that many "Obamaholics" get the satire and have moved on. Looking forward to spoofs and satire re the rapid sale of American icons and outsourcing aircraft maintenance. Thank you,

It was a tasteless cartoon and therefore should not be on the cover. It was not a joke unless you consider tasteless jokes a joke which I don't. But the one thing you don't have to be concerned, Obama is and will be chilled out.

I am sure that some people didn't get the satire of the New Yorker since they probably have never read the New Yorker but give us a break. This guy has been the cover story of every magazine except Guns and Ammo and he still may be in the future.

What The New Yorker magazine has done is not satire. It is pure hate. Evil hate. This is Satan at work through the New Yorker Magazine. It has been proven in the past months that Sen. Barack Obama is not Muslim. It has shown that there are still many who can not stomach the idea that an African-American might end up in the White House. It is time for all people to put their hates and dislikes behind them. This is now the 21st Century not the Days of Reconstruction after the Civil WAr. Are these people who have so much hate for the Obama family the last of the Ku Klux Kanners, are they part of Sen. John McCain's Campaign workers. Just who are these people who would destroy someone's over all career because of their hate for eerything that is different from the way in which they think.
The New Yorker Magazine should appologize to the Obama family on the front page of every Newspaper in the United States.

Wylie, you made your point in the first 6 words of your post. It may not be the readers of the NYker that need an explanation of their cartoon, but the 51% that elected GW may. When you have to explain your satire, the way Remick did, then the satire did not hit the mark intended. The radical right is loving this "cartoon" and it plays into the image they are putting out there for the Obamas.
Wylie wrote:

I feel the hate and fear pervading on this post. more then just his politics you folks just cant handle the concept of a black person being President. No black person. Not even someone like Condoleezza Rice. Her sin to you all would be the color of her skin.
Most of you just take the easy way out like Dianne72 who wouldn't have the guts to spew out her asinine, ridiculous comments out in public. Im sure at a republican or a Hitler youth rally but not at her workplace. So easy in front of the PC.
Again. Anyone enjoying this toon is nothing but a racist bigot. It is cold, stupid and hateful. But whatever. There is just no way that hate like this will win out. That's why I know OBAMA will win.
So you folks just keep rolling around in your racist manure.

Kindness suggests I just say that the New Yorker editor and staff are insensitive to the current political and, perhaps, social climate.
Many folks are fearful if not paranoid about terrorism generally and the next possible attack. There's that continuing scurrilous rumor circulating that Obama is a Muslim. And, of course, the Obama's are Black. I would leave this out but the Democrat primary campaign was full of accusation that Obama was inexperienced. Read this as code for dumb, lazy black guy.
In these circumstance, the New Yorker folks demonstrated more than insensitivity. The published rationale calling the drawing ordinary political satire demonstrates stupidity and maybe hard feeling amongst hard left liberals and radicals who are dismayed that Senator Obama seems to be moving toward the political center.
Shame on the New Yorker.

In the same way you can bet the uncle Rushes and uncle Hannities and their ilk will spread this image around the hilly clapboaard and aluminum ghettoes of poor white america.

"How in the world can such a tabloid as a New Yorker peddle such sewage of ignorance?"

Now is the opportunity for the left to see if it also has a sense of humor. Don't hold your breath. The New Yorker did overestimate the intelligence of the USA.

Picture of Arab dignitary above fireplace
Red lipstick, stylish afro hair & machine gun-toting spouse
Obama with turban, sandals - no socks
Expensive rug & classy home?
And the underlying message in the "New Yorker" being?
Is this then how America (according to "New Yorker") sees Obama & his family? It certainly isn't what we read and hear...
J.F. Kennedy's Christian Catholicism never got such a bum rap from this fashionable mag.
Religion has come out of its Christian & Jewish closet in exciting New York City.
The founding fathers clearly wanted nothing to do with fanatic religious creeds, but ever so enlightened editors in NYC can't seem to sell their magazine without their version of twisted black humor.
With all the problems in Europe & elsewhere stemming from media caricatures of Mohammed it would seem the New Yorker is eager to invite these very demons to its shores. As if the NYC's harbors weren't polluted enough already.

A better reaction probably would have been to let it get into the echo chamber and then slyly call out those in the echo chamber for being dense/out-of-touch and missing the point: That the image and the article are about the chattering classes, not the Obamas.

See Obama will when because all these years of dealing with "White Candidates" and the black people sat back and watched..Now there's a black Candidate speaking the right messages. And the White candidates (Like McCain and Hilary) don't know how to deal with it. Because they aren't used to someone that was once called a "Darkie" or a "Colored" person..Is down right smarter. So they drum up some nonsense about him being a terrorist.

How is this any different from the "Muhammed as Terrorist" cartoon. If Obama is to protect the freedoms of Dutch cartoonists, then his campaign staff should think twice about crying foul over this. I can't fathom that the level of idiocy of the New Yorker editorial staff that they don't grasp the level of idiocy that is possessed by a large double digit % of the AMERICAN public .

Unfortunately, the human development crisis in the fly-over states has created the "low information voter." Uneducated, bigoted rural whites hold a substantial voting bloc in the election. And they will use this as reinforcement for their flawed, unexamined beliefs.

I didn't realize that David Remnick had a white KKK sheet embroidered with the Star of David hanging in his closet. What Remnick and the rest of his pals consider funny, many of the remainder of us consider a character assasination. Please Mr. Remnick, if you insist on printing this garbage, at least put it on softer paper so I can wipe my behind with it. Better yet publish the Ninth Commandment 1000 times "Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor"

Now. I mean no harm to the good hearted white men and woman who post great comments. But crap like this just give me another reason why at times white people piss me off.
Another reason as much as I love politics I would never become a politician. If any magazine, network , publication did something like that to me or one of my loved ones I would truly meet that person responsible ,take them into and room and have a session with that person. and I assure you they would be on their knees at my mercy.
And there are times when I think that the press has just to much freedom. Some things just shouldn't be allowed. Oh well, all this hate will backfire and OBAMA will be the next Prez. The only good side effect of crap like this.
idiots all who enjoy this crap.

The satire riled me. It was irresponsible. As if the people who believe those ridiculous depictions know what the word satire means and won't use the cover as an affirmation? Satire would have depicted Karl Rove at the drawing board, coming up with these images that sink deep and dark into the psyche.

" Since it is a certainty Obama will win in November "
So then, you have a direct line to God?
Posted by: Billw | July 14, 2008 4:51 PM
First people you want to blame are the news stations. Because anyone that has ever seen something and then watched it on the news later knows that everything on it has a slant...and 45 degree slant at that. I want to blame, the writers and the editors for letting something this offensive hit the streets. They are clearly republican trying to tarnish your views and thoughts about this Black Candidate. This is the work of nothing more then your typical racists that has infiltrated our government and has altered your way of thinking.
For Black people this is an ongoing struggle we deal with everyday, and to see someone like Barrack Obama stand for something true and honestly better then any republican out there has to offer, they are trying to distort your views before election. America knows how big of a turn out this will be in November so they have already instituted new rules that is not allowing people to vote simply to tilt the tables.
"I am sick and tired of every other race...that's not white getting better chances and better opportunities then my capable black people and we are tossed aside or down-graded....Perhaps even something as simple as someone in and interview...of all white people telling you 'you wouldn't fit in with this group."...and doors being slammed in our faces.
This happens everyday in our worlds...and it will never stop even after Barrack Obama gets in office if these CEO's and High up exec's stop looking to familiarity in stead of skill.
"Wake up People-to all racists. Your time is almost up."

Hey FactChecker1, if this cartoon satirizes a particular audience, and that audience laughs at the cartoon, then, ergo, they are psychologically healthy people with the humility to laugh at themselves.
ERGO, that's a good way to be (ergo, not like all the uptight liberals).
Posted by: ERGO | July 14, 2008 4:45 PM
Editor David Remnick is either totally out of touch or not willing to count the cost of putting the New Yorker in the news. Conservative talk show host Neil Boortz (not an Obama supporter) apologized for his audiences' ignorance when 62% answered "yes" when asked if they believed Obama is a Muslim. The display of this cartoon on thousands of newsstands will only feed this ignorant perception.
As a long time subscriber, I can only register my deep disappointment and promise Mr. Remnick that he has one less subscriber renewing this year.
Posted by: carolyn | July 14, 2008 4:44 PM
This cover is not a joke--unless as one poster said, you put the whole drawing on a canvas and have Karl Rove standing in the forground as the painter cartoonist. No editorial comment or guidance is inexcusable. If you are going to run it to sell magazine, then at least put an insert title "Campaigning on Fear", something like that.
It is a fact but telling that Remnick is a thoughtful editor of a classy magazine who just happens to live in the self-contained liberal world of New York. His action as editor or the New Yorker recalls all the stupid, self-destructive things that Democrats have done over the years. Reminds me of how all the Northeastern activist Democratic supporters of Hubert Humphrey and Ted Kennedy made it a point to destroy the presidency of Jimmy Carter. That happened, a fact. David Remnick's choice to put this drawing on the cover was not cute.
Posted by: walden | July 14, 2008 4:44 PM
Trouble is "evidence" for voters who fear an Obama presidency isn't facts but "gut feeling". (Last Sunday's Opus neatly spoofed this.) That means when an agency that has long denied the validity of their Islamophobia produces actual "evidence" in the form of a drawing that depicts what they feel is incontrovertibly true, it's not satire. It's a frank admission, a "coming out" born of confidence, a gloating celebration of having put one over on the America the right believes the left hates.
I despair that "New Yorker" editors can be so naive, even stupid. On the other hand, it's not going to change anyone's vote, so no harm done, except to the trust liberals place in the "New Yorker".

Well, if it were not so incendiary, that TNY drawing would be a riot...
However, the drawing is NOT ACCURATE! (Michelle's rump is *much larger* than depicted!) LOL...
Seriously, Michelle looks more like ANGELA DAVIS, especially with that Afro-do. The details are very well done, even though the overall tone & probably the intent of this cartoon is to further DISRUPT and SABOTAGE Obama's campaign.
Bottom line: The cartoon-drawing is well done, but should never have appeared on the front of a magazine like The New Yorker. It is DIVISIVE, rabble-rousing, destructive, race-baiting, and undignified for both purveyor and viewer. This sort of thing would be better suited as an "inside joke" among folks around the water cooler. Even though it is presented as SATIRE, *most* Americans will be offended (and some will snicker). Bet TNY's fax machines & phones are smoking!

Don't worry, next issue is McCain waving an upsidedown american flag while standing in a field of dead soliders who have oil barrels for heads.

This is SATIRE folks. The only people who will see this as validating their "suspiscions" about Barack and Michelle are exactly the audience that the cover satirizes, ergo, they are too over the edge to *get it* in the first place. For goodness sake, stop blaming the Jews and Hillary already!

This cover demonstrates how far down the moral decline America has fallen.
It is as tasteless as it is inherently evil.
Like Barrack or not, it shows a vein of desperation in it's attempt to sway American opinon using inuendo and the power of visual suggestion.
I, for one, am tired of media childish antics.

Daddio on the Paddio:
"Equal time dictates a caricature of McCain laying on a hospital bed with a blond bimbo (his second wife) in one hand and a beer in the other... "
How about Obama in Wrights church with Michelle by his side, a chicken leg in one hand, a slice of watermellon in the other, and his terrorist friend Ayers on his other side applauding Wright as he enters the pulpit.

Wow bet Obama is glad he didn't slip and tell America to learn Arabic! I don't think to many AMERICANS were thrilled with the new National Anthem that was sung in Denver either, but hey some people will never get their eyes opened in time, sad isn't it. It is way past time that the press and cable news start telling a real story on this man not fluff. Gee last time a photo came out with him in his garb it was Hillarys fault who ya gonna blame this time? THE VOTERS?

Stand Tall and stay strong Obamas!
The New Yorker is run by a Jewish guy (Remnick) ..hmmm that explains it. Last presidential cycle, the New Yorker broke with tradition of non-partisanship and endorsed John Kerry. Now they are looking to slam the Democratic nominee.
YAWN!!!!!!!!! How sad another bitter Hillary supporter.

If Obama's supporters are going to get all worked up about this, imagine what is going to happen when Ann Telanes puts her W monkey suit on him, or does she only do that for white presidents.
Really, lampooning the president and presidential candidates is as old as america itself, in fact things are alot more civil now. Obama is a presidential candidate and therefore he is going to be lampooned. If you don't like it, don't buy the magazine.
Personally it made me chuckle as much as the Telanes lampoons of Bush did. Meaning: alot.

Here's an idea for the New Yorker cover satirizing John McCain and his wife. John McCain could have a nurse standing next to him with an oxygen canister, a bottle of "memory pills", and a box of adult diapers while he calls his wife a trolloping wh*re c*nt . Cindy McCain could be wearing a straightjacket with "Rehab" written on the front while Rush Limbaugh steals her painkillers.
Posted by: miknugget | July 14, 2008 3:51 PM
Hmmm...wasn't it just the other week when mccain almost went ballistic over Gen Clarks valid statement. Boy, can you imagine the old man if the new yorker had slunk to this level of insult on him. Heck, McCain can't even answer a simple question, a statement of fact virtually made him crazy. McCain could not have withstood a fraction of the scrutiny that Obama has. McCain has more dirt than Obama - McCain should keep throwing those BBQ's because if the media ever covers him with any sense of objectivity, he's cooked. Well, McCain is cooked anyway...
Posted by: JDB | July 14, 2008 3:50 PM
I'm not sure how I feel about the New Yorker cover overall. But some of the comments here certainly prove how accurately it satirizes the bigoted or otherwise paranoid views of some conservatives.

Shame! Washington Post does not enforce it's stated policy on comments.

It is unfortunate that some feel that they must push a religion on someone. I would say so what to the article that says that Obama prayed in a mosque when in Indonesia. He was 10 years old. I can remember my mother making me go to church when I was 10. At the age of 47 he has the right to choose whatever religion he feels suits his.
I hear people talking about freedom of speech, press and expression. Is Obama not afforded those same rights? This is what this country is built on correct? Isn't this the same freedom that allows the New Yorker to publish that blasphemous picture on the cover of their magazine?
Wake up people, get real. Don't fear change, you may find out that you like it. Maybe you will even appreciate what someone with such a diverse background has to offer. Especially seeing as though that is the make-up of this country and will continue to be long after we are gone.

How idiotic of the New Yorker to put a ridiculous pictue like this. There are lots of reasons Senator Obama could be viewed critically for the office which he seeks. Senators Obama and McCain should start showing substantive plans in the next few months. The picture is inaccurate and becuase people live on 30 second sound bites, thousands of people are going to view the picture and not open the mag to find out. "Well, if the New Yorker thinks this stuff is true, I will switch my vote". If you do not crack the cover and read the article, you would never know what they meant.
Posted by: thelaw | July 14, 2008 3:35 PM
"...one way or another, Obama is the news everyday".
Sure, this kinda makes people forget about Jesse Jackson's castration dreams, Rezko,

The cover reaffirms my belief that the U.S. media is under the unapologetic control of pro-war, Israel-is-always-right fanatics who sees anybody with a Muslim parent or an Arabic-sounding last name as The Enemy. They tried to cover their true agenda by pretending it's satire, but who are they fooling? It is racism in its most undisguised form. If you don't believe U.S. media is controlled by this tiny group of fanatics, ask yourself why, with all the news out in the world, the U.S. media almost always gives stories about Israel and Iran top priority. That's why I switched to the BBC.
