You silly bickering children, listen, attend and hear: the story is this "CBS manufactured a response."

It doesn't matter a tiny bit about the candidates, the issues or even Iraq. The ONLY thing that matters here is that CBS created content rather than reporting it. That is all that matters, nothing more. If you think that this story doesn't matter you are simpleton bereft of any concept of the need for truth in democracy and the value of the fourth estate. If you cannot believe that what you see on the news is accurate you circle of understanding is instantly reduced to a tiny area of direct observation around you.

CBS needs to fire Paul Friedman and Katie Curic.

The point is CBS has become complicit in criminal-like behavior by editing in answers of their choice.

They did McCain a huge favor, I guess they want to be king-makers.

The problem is not a "gaff" by McCain but whether he is mentally up to the job. This comes through as a problem, not because of several gaffs, but because of consistant disorientation. The US media is becoming like the Russian media, except that instead of FSB [fromer KGB] it is the CORPORATE PARENTS of the media outlets that want an improbable McCain win in order to get four more years of a cooperative government. As I learned when I came to America decades ago: here, money talks. So, we will get a metastatic president whom the corparate world rules, just as we had. I can't believe how people are missing this story completely. What McCain said immediately after the question was:

Couric's producer replace what McCain said with this:
"Senator Obama has indicated by his failure to acknowledge the success of the surge that he would rather lose a war than lose a campaign."
Which was not his response to the question. It was his response 45 seconds earlier to another question.

Obama gets the microscope on everything while McCain gets a pass and favorable edits. The media is trying so hard to make this a horserace when it is not.

I don't consider myself naive when it comes to approaching big media with a critical eye and some large grains of salt. But you want to believe that at least the big mainstream news organizations aren't actually blatantly falsifying the news. It's terrifying. What other inconvenient responses did CBS choose to protect us from? This must be the liberal media bias I keep hearing about.

WHAT "liberal media"? If we did have a funcioning and trustworthy media we wouldn't even be in this occupation of Iraq, nor would we believe that the surge was "working". Pathetic.

Posting the full transcript still does not allow to splice and falsify what McCain said. Friedman deserves to be fired.

This should end Katie Couric's career as a network news anchor. It should. But it probably won't. And this ought to be one of the top stories of the week -- and not just on blogs -- because the current MSM narrative is that the media is in the tank for Obama, which is a lie.

McCain's base is the media. Earlier we saw fawning Liz Sidoti of the AP give him donuts with sprinkles and coffee just the way he likes it -- with a little cream and a little sugar. We saw members of the press partying with the McCains at a weekend BBQ and learned that the Politico brought Cindy McCain flowers. We saw the media Swiftboat Gen. Clark over something he didn't say about John McCain. And we've seen the media ignore every gaffe, every mistatement of fact made by the so-called Maverick foreign policy expert. Now his base is covering for him by using trick editing.

Why is Keith Olbermann the only major media figure who seems outraged by this? I think the lack of outrage from the rest of the press is a sign that this kind of deception is more common than we think.

What I thought was probably sloppy work by CBS now appears to be worse, Creative Journalism sanctioned by the MSM.

This is just another example of MSM covering for McCain. McCain often refers to the media as his base. Incidents such as, Liz Sidoti of the AP offering McCain donuts with sprinkles and coffee just the way he likes it and CBS' Paul Friedman covering for McCain, just proves that McCain is right. The press is his base.

Funny how the "mistake" by CBS seemed to work in McCain's favor by covering up his gaffe. I do not believe for one minute this was a mistake by CBS.

Everybody in the country had to go out and buy a digital Television because we're no longer broadcasting analog signals. So now CBS is telling me that they're still recording interviews on analog tape? And further, that they're cutting and splicing tape in the editing room, instead of using computers? I don't believe it! Sounds like a big lie to me.

What makes this particularly egregious is the clip that CBS News was airing around the noon hour yesterday, in which Couric says that McCain said that the surge came before the awakening, but that "the "Obama campaign claims" the awakening took place first.

Either Couric and CBS News didn't know the facts, or were not willing to represent their own statement of fact, deferring the journalist's responsibility for presenting the facts to a political campaign.

In so doing, CBS News ceased being a source for factual news on the story, but shifted determination of facts to the viewers, who now must decide which campaign is representing the facts.

The editors deleted a clip of a statement made that wasn't factual, and ran a cutaway hero shot of McCain with Petraeus. that took some premeditation.

Today we have CBS News' explanation for the error, allowing the McCain campaigns continued parsing of clarification, which is in line with the edited version. What happened? Was the McCain campaign involved in the editing?

That is why I no longer watch CBS Evening News. I can't trust them to be accurate. I liked them with Schaffer and Rather but Couric falls short. Whoever cut the piece should be fired, and anyone that knew and let it happen should be fired. Editing the answer to a question that is wrong shows more than bad judgement it shows the network cannot be trusted to provide the truth. It is a disgrace.

CBS is a joke. McCain is clueless about the Middle East and the mainstream media is covering for him. It's pathetic.

The issue here is the editing done by ABC which shoud never have been done. They cannot chop and cut to assist a candidate when he is wrong.

Isn't the real issue the media editing the truth? This is a campaign for the President of the United States. This is the alleged most powerful position in the free world. Don't the people have the right to view the answer in an unedited format. Here it is worse than that. The answer was changed completely.

When I was a child, it was the favorite tactic of TV to play how a news story in Russia was played. Typically, the newsreader gave a totally phoney version of events. Americans were then supposed to believe we were superior because our press told us the truth. Have we become like Communist Russia in the height of the Cold War. Out TV networks don't report the truth. The TV anchor is a journalist; the anchor is a reader.

When Tom Brokaw was asked about the failures of the networks to get it right on the propaganda run up to the invasion of Iraq, he passed it off that it wasn't the business of the networks to challenge the President. If the press doesn't report the truth or edits the truth for some other purpose, this isn't the news. It isn't journalism. It is paid propaganda. Which is okay, if they label their news programs as such so people would know they are unreliable.

By not forthrightly condemning them, this lame Washington Post story compounds the disgraceful actions of CBS. CBS covered up a serious blunder by John McCain. It edited out his mistaken assertions about the Sunni Awakening and hid from the public his incompetence and his weak grasp of even the basic facts of recent Iraqi history.

The Washington Post writers should have been clear about the damage this kind of misstep by CBS inflicts on the public. How can we have an informed electorate if the media repeatedly confuses and covers up for one candidate.

Some one at CBS should be fired. Katie Couric should be denounced. And the Washington Post media watchdogs should be ashamed of themselves.

You may be correct to criticize my choice of words. However, I was not there to verify John McCain's torture at the hands of the Vietcong. I do know that many of our own soldiers killed and wounded other American soldiers (primarily officers) in events called "fragging." I also know that Eugene "Red" McDaniel was a true American hero who was also a prisoner of war for a long time. I knew him and his family.

I mean no disrespect for John McCain. However, he is showing his true colors in this presidential contest. He has forgotten why he fought for this country. Where were you when they were throwing mud at John Kerry, a true hero of the Vietnam War? Fortunately for John, he got to sit it out in a box and got to ignore all the fuss at home. John Kerry exerted some of the greatest leadership ever by tackling the powers in Washington with an inconvenient truth. I was serving my country in the military then and I distinctly remember that General Westmoreland was eventually disgraced for the false reporting that he was doing. Then Kerry had to fight the war again against those who never fought by his side and who tried to render his service as dishonest and of no consequence.

You might call this the tale of the two Johns. Now I ask, which one is best fit to be President? The one who faced the enemy face to face and fought to save his men or the one who was shot down and got to sit out the rest of the war until he was released? Or the President we actually got who was AWOL in the National Guard? Mind you, I understand that it was no picnic sitting in a POW camp. But his fighting days were over.

If those of you holding John McCain up as your hero did nothing to repudiate the character assassination of John Kerry, another decorated war veteran, then you have nothing relevant to say. You are letting your party stand ahead of your patriotism. You belong in the German SS where they undertstood such allegiance.

Okay, by your definition, the surge worked. Now are you happy.

The problem is the definition. You seem to define everything in military terms. The surge was a military counter-insurgency. The TACTICAL result was a decrease in violence, also a military result.

But the STRATEGIC purpose of the surge was not defined in military terms, but in political ones.

A. It was expected that it would buy time for the Iragi government to reach ethnic and sectarian reconciliation. I think I heard that the Kurds walked out of parliament the other day, dooming the chances of provincial elections this year. Great political results, right?

B. There was to be agreement on the distribution of oil revenues. No such law has been passed. I only hear that progress is being made. I assume progress will continue to be made for years to come.

C. The extra troops were to help stabilize the Iragi police and military. They still seem pretty fragile and show no real signs of having been able to pull off even a modest operation without back up. More success?

D. etc. There were a dozen or more such goals or purposes for the surge. So far I have not heard that any of them have actually been fully implemented.

When I was in business, we often joking asked if a project was merely done or done-done. I am not sure that any of those purposes for the surge meet even the lowest criteria of being done. Only if the goal of the surge is viewed in mere military terms can any rational person say that it was a success. But yes, in terms of reducing violence, it did succeeed. And we spent millions on that. Hurray!

And victory, what does that look like? It is not many years since huge armies stood on opposite sides of the Iran-Iraq border, including hundreds of thousands of children as young as 10 or 12, ruthlessly shooting each other. It is safe to assume that the same could hold true on the boundaries between the various ethnic groups. A difference of 4, 6 or 10 years will not change that.

Besides, we managed to protect the Kurds for years with the no-fly zones, without troops on the ground. I suspect we could do the same for the Arab Sunnis with a little help from the Saudis (also Sunnis) right across another border. And I suspect Kuwait or one of the other small Gulf States would be glad to let us base planes and rapid response forces there for all kinds of reasons. Let's get creative folks.

A perpetual crisis which we can manage is probably the best we can do in the victory department. I'll settle for that.

We "won" the Cold War. Do the current conditions in Russia look anything like what we might have wished? Not really. These are sovreign countries and will eventually do as they please, no matter how long we stay. Time to get out and let the chips fall as they may, with a modest backup plan in the event of chaos.

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- Welcome to the conservative's worst nightmare: The law of unintended consequences. Why? Nobody wants to admit it, folks, but the conservatives' grand ideology is backfiring, actually turning the world's greatest capitalistic democracy into the world's newest socialist economy.
A little history: The core principles of conservative economic ideology are grounded in Nobel economist Milton Friedman's 1962 classic "Capitalism and Freedom." Too late to stop President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society, those principles became the battle cries energizing conservatives since Reagan: Unrestricted free markets, free enterprise and free trade; deregulation, privatization and globalization; trickle-down economics and trickle-up wealth to an elite plutocracy destined to rule the new American capitalist utopia.
So what happened? Are you guys nuts? Hey, I'm talking to all you blind Beltway politicians (in both parties) ... plus the Old Boys Club running Wall Street (into the ground) ... plus all you fat-cat CEOs (with megamillion parachutes) ... and all your buddies scamming everybody else to get on the Forbes 400. You are proof of Lord Acton's warning: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
It's backfiring! You folks turned our America from a great capitalistic democracy into a meddling socialist economy. Still you don't get it. You're acting like teen addicts tripping on an overdose of "greed-is-good" testosterone while your caricature of conservative economics would at best make a one-line joke on Jay Leno.
Here are 11 reasons your manipulations are sabotaging the great principles of leaders like Friedman and Reagan:
1. Dumber than a fifth grader with cognitive dissonance
Kids know what it means. They know most adults today can't see past the end of their noses. Liberals tune out candidate McBush for being lost in the past. Conservatives can't hear Obama without seeing that turban.
Cognitive dissonance simply means most brains cannot see past their own narrow ideologies. They dismiss any data that contradicts their old ideologies. Whether you're a conservative Republican or liberal Democrat, you only hear what you already know is "true." All else is tuned out.
2. Where did all the leaders go with their moral character?
Friedman's economics requires leaders of moral character. Did it run into Lord Acton's warning: "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely?" Former Ford and Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca said yes in "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?"
Friedman's great conservative principles have been commandeered by myopic ideologues whose idea of leadership is balancing the demands of self-interest lobbyists with the need for campaign donations. Unfortunately, a new "change" president won't be enough; there are 537 elected officials in Washington controlled by 42,000 special interest lobbyists.
3. Fed and U.S. Treasury adopted Enron accounting tricks
Bad news: Enron failed several years ago because of its off-balance-sheet accounting scam. The Fed's doing the same thing: Dumping Bear's $30 billion liabilities onto the taxpayer's "balance sheet." Next Treasury proposes adding $5.3 trillion more from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Unfortunately clever accounting tricks by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke aren't going to fool foreign lenders analyzing America's creditworthiness. Worse-case scenario: U.S. Treasury bills with less than a triple-A rating.
With 90 banks on the brink and already too many bail-outs, our so-called leaders are running out of magic bullets. So now the taxpayer's "balance sheet" has become the all-purpose "dumping ground" and it's overcrowding fast as our leaders raise the white flag of socialism.
4. Deregulation creating new socialist housing system
Back in 1999 a Democratic president and Republican Congress were in love with a fantasy called the "new economics." Enthusiastic lobbyists invented the brilliant idea of dismantling the wall between commercial and investment banking: They killed the Glass-Steagall Act that was keeping the sleazy hands of short-term hustlers out of the pockets of long-term lenders.
Flash forward: We lost 85-year-old Bear Sterns and $32 billion IndyMac. Lehman's iffy. And 90 banks. With the virtual takeover of Freddie and Fanny, Wall Street's grand experiment with free-market ideology is backfiring, having socialized the housing market. They have nobody to blame but their self-centered greed.
5. Trade deficits outsourced more of America's wealth than jobs
One look at Forbes lists of fat cats and you know the 21st Century doesn't just belong to Asia, it belongs to everyone but America. Why? Once again, remember Warren Buffett's famous "Farmer's Story" in Fortune: "We were taught in Economics 101 that countries could not for long sustain large, ever-growing trade deficits ... our country has been behaving like an extraordinarily rich family that possesses an immense farm. In order to consume 4% more than they produce -- that's the trade deficit -- we have, day by day, been both selling pieces of the farm and increasing the mortgage on what we still own."
Friedman was right: Congressional spending is the biggest cause of inflation, and, wow, those conservatives sure did love blank-check deficit spending the past eight years!
6. Banking system in meltdown, minting penny stocks
The Friedman conservatives apparently understand Joseph Schumpeter's "creative destruction." Yet, our free-market ideologues can't seem to accept that America is now on the "destructive" downside leg of the cycle, in the economy, markets, trade, politics and, yes, sadly, even with their conservative ideology.
You don't have to be smarter than a fifth grader to figure out that our leaders are clueless about the reality of our crumbling banking system, with many banks trading as penny stocks, while the Fed still panders to conservative pre-election politics rather than getting serious about inflation.
7. Ideologues preach savings, but still push spending
A core principle of conservatism is frugality, saving for the future. Grandparents raised me, struggled during the Depression, passed on strong ideals.
Somewhere over the past generation conservatives forget frugality. This distortion peaked in 2003 when consumers were told to spend, not sacrifice, and fuel the economy even as government spent excessively on war. That was a clear breach of every conservative leader's position in earlier wars.
As a result, in one brief generation, as the power of conservative ideologues grew, America's savings rate dropped precipitously from 11% in 1980 to less than zero today.
8. Warning, the market's under 2000 peak, losing money
Imagine you're on Jeff Foxworthy's fabulous show competing to see if you really are smarter than a fifth grader. Question: "If you put $10,000 in the market in March of 2000 when the Dow peaked at 11,722, how much money would you have today if the market's 10% under 11,722?" So you guess $9,000.
But then two fifth graders raise their hands: One asks if the CPI inflation rate should be considered? If so, maybe $5,000 is closer to the right answer. The other kid wants to know if you're buying stuff in Chicago or Singapore.
The truth is, the best answer for most adults is: "You've lost a hell of a lot of money in the market under the grand conservative ideology the past eight years."
9. Inflation and dollars: Is Zimbabwe the new model for the U.S.?
The Los Angeles Times ran a photo of a Zimbabwe $500 million bank note, worth $20 at noon, less at dinner. Why? Inflation's there is running 32 million (yes million!) percent annually. The German company printing their banknotes finally cut them off.
Things may be worse in America, psychologically. Our ideological obsession with "growth" is not working because there is too much collateral damage, namely inflation. Our dollar has lost substantial value to the euro because our dysfunctional leaders are convinced that a trade policy funded by debt makes sense.
Now we owe China $1.3 trillion, sovereign funds want equity not cheap dollar IOUs, and still our clueless Treasury and the Fed continue debasing our currency, printing money like Zimbabwe.
10. Free-market health care failing 47,000,000 Americans
Big Pharma loves free-market conservatism and no-compete Medicare drug programs. Nobody else is happy. Taxpayers get stuck with the bill.
"The Coming Generational Storm" tells us that without massive reforms and big lifestyle changes for taxpayers (especially retirees), within a couple short decades America's entitlement programs will eat up the entire federal budget. Medicare is the biggest cost item in your future, over $50 trillion in unfunded liabilities.
Conservative ideologues naively believe the answer is more pay-out-of-pocket insurance plans, even with 47 million already uninsured because they can't pay. Here as in so many areas of our economy, free-market junkies really are suffering a severe case of cognitive dissonance, as blind to the facts about the uninsured as they are to their outdated free-market fantasies.
11. Conservative free-market policies inflated oil 300%!
Yep, oil inflated 300% in eight short years under the "leadership of two oil men." But, you can't blame them. It seems as if CBS has egg on its face again. The Dan Rather mess regarding the service of Bush in the National Guard drew quite a rush of attention from similar-type people who pushed hard to plaster John Kerry's war record. Unfortunately, this time CBS has really screwed up. It is one thing to edit an interview, it is another to transpose comments between questions. Hopefully, some heads will roll at CBS over this fiasco.

I keep thinking about today and the fact that John McCain promised that once he brings the troops back home from Iraq, they will never go back again. I was hoping to see the press take him to task on this, but have not heard much about it. I guess he never plans to bring the troops home. Barack's logical and cautious approach is in keeping with intelligent thought regarding tough situations which have been brought about by mule-headed idealogues.

I prefer to have as President someone who can think logically, analyze situations, and present coherent options and solutions than a person who spews forth bravado, like McCain, with no earthly idea what he is talking about. Obama is a real threat to those who have no functioning brain, but prefer to follow a strict, narrowly defined message. These people would have been easily swayed by Hitler. In fact, many upright Christians were indeed swayed by Hilter's style of security.

It is a testimony to the strength of our Constitution that the Bushies have not toppled our government with their trampling all over the Consitution and our system of laws. Yes, the right still harps on Clinton and his sexual problems. But Clinton's sexual problems were neither a cause for impeachment nor an infringement of the Constitution. However, the willful trampling on the rights of citizens, the willful violation of various laws, and the approved torture of our prisoners are acts of disrespect for our Constitutional form of government. Yes, there are those who would sell their souls to have security, but our brave men and women in uniform over the centuries have given their lives in support of our Constitution and our freedoms - freedoms that many "superpatriots" among us would apparently give up for security.

Obama will make an excellent Commander-in-Chief. He proved it when he said yesterday that the decisions would be his after obtaining the advice of the generals and so forth. This is the way the Constitution sets it out. If the generals make the calls regarding policy matters, then we have a military, or police, state. George Bush relinquished his right to be considered our Commander-in-Chief when he yielded his power to Gen. Petraeus. He has consistently taken shelter behind his generals. What a leader! McCain will be no better. He has said so in so many words.

Regarding Obama's trip to the Middle East - Obama never needed to go there before the election. However, he has performed splendidly. He can receive detailed briefings here and figure out what is happening. It is odd that the same people who champion that it is not appropriate to talk to certain foreign leaders chastise Obama for not talking to certain foreign leaders.

Listen to Obama very carefully, you who would try to demean this gentleman who has the sense to get in out of the rain. Unfortunately, those who berate Obama are incapable of intelligent thought. I know this because of the arguments that they use to try to tear him down. Instead of presenting a compelling case for their own programs, they only attack Obama.

One final word about unity. I see all these bumper stickers about "United we stand." How can our country be united when the politics of the right is solely geared to a scorched-earth approach to
