Obama's Symbolic Importance

Updated 10:59 a.m. 7/30/08
By Jonathan Weisman
In his closed door meeting with House Democrats Tuesday night, presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama delivered a real zinger, according to a witness, suggesting that he was beginning to believe his own hype.

Obama was waxing lyrical about last week's trip to Europe, when he concluded, according to the meeting attendee, "this is the moment, as Nancy [Pelosi] noted, that the world is waiting for."

The 200,000 souls who thronged to his speech in Berlin came not just for him, he told the enthralled audience of congressional representatives. "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions," he said, according to the source.

On Wednesday morning, House leadership aides pushed back against interpretations of this comment as self-aggrandizing, saying that when the presumptive Democratic nominee said, "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America," he was actually trying to deflect attention from himself.

No tape of the event exists and no one is denying the quote.

But one leadership aide said the full quote put it into a different context. According to that aide, Obama said, "It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign -- that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have just become a symbol."

Obama and his left wing cronies continue to bash America, while insisting that he is the messiah who will restore our country to it's former greatness ... and restore our status with the international community ... however, the international community continues to hold back aid to hungry and under privileged countries, while America continues to give much more foreign aid than other countries ... even the oil rich countries ... see the stats at:

Barack Obama recently finished a $500,000 total overhaul of his 757. And as part of the new design, he decided to remove the American flag from the tail...
What American running for President of the United States would remove the symbol of his country? And worse, he replaced the tail flag with it with a symbol of himself. BEWARE of this elitist...

Since that quote appeared in the Post, Obama supporters have claimed it's taken out of context, one Democratic staffer who was at the meeting says, quote, the Post left out the important first half of the sentence, It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, it`s not about me at all, it`s about America. I have just become a symbol.

Surely, Weisman must know, in some part of his brain, that you can't get a real "quotation" that way. In fact, there's no apparent reason to think that either "quotation" is actually accurate. But so what? This is the Washington Post! These dueling collections of words were close enough for presidential campaign work.

Weisman had obtained two recollections of what Obama had said. His two sources seemed to differ in their recollections. You'd think that anyone whose head wasn't stuck up his keister would understand a basic fact--there were no real "quotations" here. Simply put: We don't know what Obama said in that meeting. What we really seem to have is more like a pair of dueling paraphrases. But let's repeat that one key fact: We don't really know what he said.

Save the blastocysts! Your uterus belongs to the government, and don't forget it!
Now McCain's GOP wants to make CONTRACEPTIVES and the PILL = ABORTION. There is already legislation in the works. CHECK IT OUT IN TODAYS WALL STREET JOURNAL:

These people aren't concened with the health of ANYONE, human or blastocyst. They're agenda is, and alsways has been, to control women's bodies through the force of government. GREAT, we'll have McCains Bureaucrats telling women what they can and can't do with their bodies. Thank you "less-government" Republicans.

Obama voted against the 'born alive' act. He thinks it's just A-OK to kill babies who have survived abortion attempts, 'just toss em in the medical waste trash... Do any of us want this killer to be our president? Maybe next he will be killing us too, especially older Americans - it'd be more economical with his socialist health care. Why waste good money on the elderly, better to save the younger slaves to do all the work - maybe on his 'highways programs, or in his secret civilian security forces. This man, and I use the term very loosely, is one DANGEROUS SOB!!!

I was in a really blah mood until I came here today and read all the posts. This has been a real pick me upper. Thank y'all.

It's funny to me about how many Obamamaniacs have gotten their drawers in a wad over a presumed (if any of the posters were there at the time of the statement, let me know) "taken out of context" statement.

Y'all crack me up!!!

Poor, pitiful Barack...getting picked on like that. That's just wrong!

I wouldn't call any of John McCain's adds sneering, merely highly opportunistic.

Many of the adds are played off Obama's numerous gaffes.

That's a standard tactic.

Hmm. Mediamatters.org? That's as fair and balanced as the McClatchy news service

Sneering, smearing negative campaign adds (verging at times on blatant lies) against his democratic opponent seems to be McCain's
sole rationale for why he should be elected. Can it be that his toughts are so meger that his campaign is much more enthusiastic about jeering at his opponent than they are touting their own candidate's vision?

Obama is a megalomaniac of whose caliber is only matched by the Nabobs of Narcissism the ex-president Bill Clinton and John Kerry.

Arrogance is a trait of any aspiring Marxist-- he has it spades.
Another trait seems to be a willful and deliberate ignorance of history.

History has proven Government run health-care to a deadly farce, even a zero-sum game; however, that doesn't stop The Democratic Establishment's latest Pretty Boy Floyd from pursuing it.

I'm no fan of John McCain, he's too much of a democrat (a flaw of many so-called Republicans and Independents).
The events of this election have left me and others without a choice to vote for, (Tancredo, Hunter, Romney, or Thompson)
so I end doing something which is not supposed to be my measure.

I am Against Socialist Healthcare, Against race-baiting, Against Appeasement, Against Forfeit in Iraq and and other Territories we have any foothold.
I am against form of Government-controlled markets (with the sole exclusion of Defense Contractors [and then only that they can't sell to other countries])

I Vote Against an Obomination.

Believe it, when I tell you that FOX, rove, hannity, rush and B team players like Weisman are trying to do something here. They cannot use race in an overt manner so they use arrogance as a CODE for UPPITY BLACK MAN. American has made great strides more than ANY OTHER NATION on planet earth to build a perfect society. The likes of rove, hannity and rush, i believe are the unacceptable face of american politics. And good citizens MUST do everything in our power to stop them (by disseminating information from credible sources). This election is too important to be distorted. Let the best man win on MERIT.

I can't believe that Fox Freakin' News has taken over the Washington Post! When has it become acceptable journalism to take a snippet of a quote completely out of context and then wait until the very last paragraph to insert the missing sentences that show that the point being made in the quote is exactly the opposite of what was excerpted? What next from the Post -- removing the word "not" from quotes because they're not really necessary to understand what may have been meant. Ben Bradlee is rolling over in his grave, and he's not even dead yet.

When you make these BOLD claims it will be useful if you provide a link to a credible source to back up your claims!! conservatives are used to making wild statements. From what i have read, I am not convinced that the clintons originated the muslim smear. It had been around for over a year before the clintons run with it. Here is a link to how the smear was originated and propagated.

Credible sources? Are you serious? You're going to post a link to some obscure website whose author is unknown, and you're going to ask ME to post a credible site? Think for yourself. All these came about when his delegate numbers exceeded Hillary's. The Clinton machine is famous for making these kinds of claims. I'll believe Dick Morris, who worked for the Clinton's over some skewed website. It works well with the timing. You can keep burying your head in the sand if you so wish.

Beth Barnat...you are quite possibly the dumbest person to have posted here today!! The guy was saying that the only people who are saying that there are people who thing Obama is and uppity black man are his supporters.
Are you that dense? He's saying, and I agree, that nowhere will you hear anybody who's against Obama say anything about his color or anything like that!! We don't like Obama because he's a liar...and they all are...but Obama pretends that he's much better than that and all he's ever accomplished is to get to the next level. In 8 years in the Illinois Senate, all the bills he co-sponsored and/or passed were given to him by Emil Jones. He didn't do any legwork on anything he submitted. Emil Jones gave him his legacy so that he (Jones) could "make me a U.S. Senator". Look it up!! Nobody is saying he's too young....we're saying he hasn't done anything to show that he's anything more than a good tele-prompter reader!!
Wake up, America! You're being snowed. And I'm sure that'll be taken as a racist comment because snow is white!!
It's sad that you can't disagree or say anything negative about Obama without being called a racist! You people are sad!! Ooops! I said you people...there'a another racist comment.
See??? I can't even say anything without making a bad comment! This country is going down the tubes...we've lost what it means to be an American...to disagree without fear of persecution.
But, I forgot! Obama is the symbol of what America should be!! What a crock!!

Our kind of guy

Mr. Obama spent 20 years hanging around racists and anti-semites(not 20 seconds-20 years!)
It took him that long to do the right thing? Does his conscience take that long to kick in?

1. Mr. Obama is a first-term senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name.
2. Mr. Obama voted present nearly 130 times, quite a lot for a first term Senator.
3. Mr. Obama lectures on learning a foreign language, can speak none himself.
4. Mr. Obama has never produced a single peice of scholarship,or written anything of note.
5. He earned a law degree from harvard but never practiced law.
6. He did write a book. The subject? Himself.
7. Has he ever admitted he changed his mind or was wrong about anything?
8. on Iraq, Obama has held almost every conceivable position.
9. His Pro-Life (National Right to Life) rating=
2005 0%,
2006 0%,
2007 0%
His Pro-Abortion (NARAL) rating=
2005 100%,
2006 100%,
2007 100%

What does one innocent human life mean to God( not man, but God)?
10. On Iraq, he has held almost every conceivable opinion

Padre Pio, was a very holy man and a great mystic. Every time I think I've read about every book I written on the man come across another one. In this particular book on him which I was looking at recently, there was a person who told a story about going to him for confession. He told about Padre Pio becoming very angry at him for voting for a socialist. Later he went back to him for confession and told him that this time he did not vote for the socialist but he couldn't bring himself to vote for other candidate either, Again Padre Pio became very angry at him
and would not grant him absolution(forgiveness of sin) From this we have to conclude
that Padre Pio considered it a sin for someone to vote for a socialist and also to opt for not voting
at all either. Another story I read about him in another book was when he went up
to a person he didn't know and had never met and confronted him about being
a communist. In other words, to Padre Pio, a person's salvation was not exclusionary from
one's political considerations and what political party you belonged to or voted for (if the moral positions of such contradicted Christian teaching) could put your soul in jeopardy. And what about being an accessory to another's sin? If a politician has made clear his pro-abortion position and I vote for him and once he gets into office he carries through with his philosophy am I not guilty of aiding and abetting?

(The name of the book from which I got the Padre Pio story was "Stories of Padre Pio" by Katharina Tangari published by TAN books,Rockford Illinois translated from the Italian "Il Messaggio di Padre Pio". Madame Tagari knw Padre Pio for many, many years and was a "spiritual daughter" of him

Obama's voting record on abortion legislation gives every indication that as president he would support the Supreme Court's decisions that have made the procedure legal in most cases. Last August he voted against a proposal to codify a Bush administration policy that gives states the option of providing medical insurance to unborn children under the State Children's Health Insurance program. He also voted "no" on a 2006 bill to prohibit the transportation of a minor girl across state lines to obtain an abortion, if this would circumvent parental consent or notification laws in her home state.

We will have to ANWER TO GOD for our decisions people.

I am sick of the blacks making racial remarks when somebody doesn't like Obama. Obama is arrogant. He is full of himself. When a black man is running regardless of the fact that he is a junior senator they don't care about experience only skin color. Therefore if anyone else sees good reasons not to vote for Obama they must be racist. The ones that are the most racist are the 92% blacks that are voting for him for the color of his skin. It doesn't matter what the damage would be to this country. That is real racism. I am sick of everything that a black is involved in being about race. That seems to be the only thing on their minds. Other people do not think about race unless the blacks bring it up. Real idiots.

The Government is batting zero for the past 50 years. Ill be staying home this year because McCain is on the edge of senile and Obama is as far left as any canidate in hystory. screw them both.

Wow. Let's take something out of context, POINT OUT that it's being taken out of context, POINT OUT that the context really doesn't support your premise, and STILL try to use it to defame the man.

I had hoped that we might finally get a campaign where the candidates had an open, frank, and factual discussion of the issues. All that went out the window when McCain discovered he was losing and brought in Schmidt and Team Rove to spin his message and trash the competition.

But the REALLY sad thing is how many brain-dead people can't see how this is destroying our country. The sad state of political discourse in this nation is more damaging than any other aspect of government: more dangerous than terrorism, more dangerous than oil, more dangerous than failed systems. It's more dangerous because it stands in the way of our nation coming together to solve any of these other problems.
