Alito Nomination: Gang of 14 to Meet

The 14 senators whose compromise earlier this year defused a potential floor fight over the filibustering of federal judges is set to meet Thursday to discuss the nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court.

The meeting will take place Thursday morning in the office of Arizona Sen. John McCain (R) -- one of the bipartisan gang's most visible members.  The group met once on Oct. 5 to discuss the Harriet Miers nomination.

It remains unclear how serious a role the group will play in the Alito nomination.  Both Democrats and Republicans seem to be girding for a fight, though no one has invoked the specter of a filibuster to block the nomination.  If that prospect is raised, expect the Gang to be in the middle of an effort to short circuit it.

How many refineries before mega mergers. You would think pres's bro would understand the number got halved because refineries not cost effective.

Listen to Fitzgerald tape from Friday when he mentioned if Libby, Rove, and reporters had not stonewall, Friday would have happened in Oct 2004 rather than Oct 2005. mmmmmm. let's see, what was going on last Oct. Oh well, I guess it worth it if Bush wins election he definitely can pardon Libby and anyone else if necessary

Could someone clarify something about the term 'strict constructionist' and folks who try to 'follow the framers', as noted in the description of Judge Alito and others -- since the framers dealt with a focus on white men with land, with writings that reflected this, how do ethnic and racial minority judges like Alito and Janice Rogers Brown justify their positions when judges like them, let alone citizens, would have been excluded from the focus of the framers?

Did anyone notice anything really scary in the statement by Tim Russert that he got a call from "Scooter" (puke) Libby about something that he didn't like (or more likely Cheney didnt like) on the news?!!! Creepy. So we have the Vice President calling to tell them to change something on the news...Now that's a big surprise but still very very scary for whats left of this democracy. Can you say propaganda?

Does anyone beside me notice that Conservatives thing all 7 of the Republicans on the Gang have one name: McCain? He's only only one they blame for the Gang's existence.
