In Alabama, Judge Moore Takes Aim at Incumbent
Deposed Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore today formally entered the Republican primary against Gov. Bob Riley, setting up a high-profile, intraparty battle likely to reverberate in national conservative circles.

Moore made his announcement in Gadsden, the Alabama town where he first gained national recognition in the 1990s as a circuit court judge who refused to take down a wooden plaque of the Ten Commandments in his courtroom. When Moore was elected chief justice in 2000, he continued to court controversy by installing a huge, granite monument to the commandments in the state's judicial building. He was eventually removed from office in 2003 after refusing a federal judge's order to remove the statue.
Moore's martyrdom turned him into a hero among religious conservatives both in Alabama and nationally. In the intervening two years, he has spoken in dozens of states on the issue and was pushed by conservatives as a possible nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result, Moore is likely to enjoy the strong support of that bloc in the primary, while Riley will rely on the establishment wing of the party including the business community.
Democrats face a primary of their own between former governor Don Siegelman and Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley.
The Associated Press has a write-up of the Moore news. The Atlantic Monthly had a lengthy feature piece on Moore's political aspirations in its Oct. issue.

Each man woman and child was known by GOD, the GOD of Abraham, Isacc and Jacob. Each were redeemed by the sacrifice and love of the LORD JESUS CHRIST. No one can change that reality. When you breath your last breath and your heart beats its last time, you will meet HIM face to face. Politics and opinions won't matter on the day you are buried. Only whether or not you asked JESUS CHRIST to become the LORD of your life. I support Bob Riley because I believe HIM to be a Christian man as well as Judge Roy Moore. Judge Moore however would not have had anywhere near the problems He had if he had placed the Ten Commandments in the Rotunda at high noon instead of slipping it in in the middle of the night as though he were breakin a law. I have however defended him since that time stating surely he would be running for his old job as Chief Justice after taking his stand. I have had to apologize for his apparent motive of seeking the governor's office in the State of Alabama. And while I am at it, what lottery did the governor push. To my knowledge and recollection he was adaptly opposed to any such thing in the State. We are a Christian state or used to be. Don't be deceived. If the rule of law matters at all, Judge Moore should have advised the people of Alabama he had fought the fight to display the Ten Commandments at the judiciary but had extinquished all his legal options. Had he done that maybe he could have taken a stand on other issues that our LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST would have been proud of. To be a servant one must first be humble. A rarity in today's politics. May GOD forgive us as Christians for being lukewarm and unusable.

Our nation was founded as a Christian nation. If there are those who migrated here and think otherwise, then let them migrate back to where they came from. If we don't stand together now, they will divide and conquer us.

If Moore wins....this 46 year old grad student will be out of Alabama long before he takes office!!

I grew up in Alabama and everything the Atlantic article said is 100% true. He will beat Riley in the primary because most of the Churches haven't forgiven Bob for pushing the lottery so hard.
It will just be a test to see if Lucy's HUGE name recognition can handle Roy in the general.
This is really sad to see happening in a state that can't seem to shake its political problems.

The only thing that Judge Moore did wrong, if anything, was to continue to refuse after the highest court in America told him to remove the beutiful monument. This puts the guilt on the other judges and he still did his job according to Alabama law. The legislators are at fault for putting unenforceable laws on the books.

Here is another interesting candidate running for Governor in Alabama. Should be a very interesting race...

Judge Moore's celebrity status showed that evangelicals only believe in "the rule of law" if it suits their view of how things ought to be. They loved it when Moore thumbed his nose at the law. They see America being governed by a puritanical set of ancient "biblical" laws. They see these moral laws being enforced with harsh punishments and incarcerations rather than rehabilitation or working on the root causes (poverty, lack of education and opportunity) of crime and the decay of society.

Judge Moore is counting on the probability that the majority of Alabama voters are redneck Christian fascists. He is probably correct in this.

Moore in a walk. I lived in Alabama a long time. There aren't enough people with brains left in the state to stop this. And when he gets in in he'll make Fob James seem like a philosopher king.
Can't wait for the show.

This should be an interesting primary race. This will really expose the potential chasm that may grow within the Republican Party. Granted both are hard-core conservatives, but it will be more social conservative vs. fiscal conservative. Who will win? Will it spill onto the national scene? Such as in '08, when Brownback could challenge McCain (yes there are going to be many R nominees running in the primaries, but this is just one example).

It is hard to tell what a Moore win would mean to the chances of Republicans holding the seat come November 2006. He is no doubt a controversial figure but his convincing defeat of an incumbent justice in 2000 shows he has significant support in the state.

Chris, what's the common wisdom on this one? If Moore can capture the nomination, can he win statewide? Or would his victory in the primary be seen as a gift to the Democrats?

Should be an interesting matchup. An egomanical sycophant of the far right vs. . . an egomanical sycophant of the far right. But, since it's Alabama, I'm giving the edge to the former.
