Mike Oxley, Retiree?
Rep. Mike Oxley (R-Ohio) is planning to retire from Congress and could make an announcement to that effect as early as this week, according to four sources with close ties to House Republicans who were told of the decision by a mix of aides on Capitol Hill and members of Congress. The sources requested anonymity because they do not work for Oxley and don't want to jeopardize their relations with the congressional leadership by leaking the news.
A spokesman for Oxley did not return three calls and two e-mails seeking comment.
An Oxley retirement would make sense given that his chairmanship of the House Financial Services Committee is up at the start of 2007. And, at age 61, Oxley is still young enough to start a second -- more lucrative -- career.
Should Oxley retire in 2006, his west-central 4th District would be in little danger of switching party control. President Bush won the district with 65 percent of the vote in 2004. Oxley has held the district since June 1981 when he won a special election. In 2004, he was reelected with 59 percent of the vote.
So which candidates are likely to seek this seat if it's open next year? Let me know.

As someone who has lived with Oxley for the 20 plus years of his so called representation, we are joyful that he is retiring. However, this district is brain dead with robot voters who vote Republican from birth and cant be woke up from their genetic programming. The district is filled with pro life billboards and small minded local newspapers who run the high school football game as the top story of the day. Democrats here can only hope to make Republicans spend money here so that this money is not available to be used to hurt Democrats somewhere else. One good thing is that Oxley was very sucessful at milking the Corporate cow for money and hopefully his replacement wont be so good. We are looking for someone to run as a Democrat and we will keep you informed. Go to Democrats of the 4th Ohio District at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/4thdistrictdems/

Ken Blackwell will be Ohio's first black governor.

But Hackett can NOT run for the House and Senate simultaneously. He's already running for the Senate and not from the 4th district. Part of me would rather he run for the OH-2 seat again and clear the field for Brown. That way they both go to Congress next round. I haven't figured out who to support in the Gov. primary, but I have warm feelings and memories around both candidates. Strickland could hold his seat better for us than if it were open though. Depends how liberal a candidacy he runs. Coleman would be the state's first black governor, has had a successful run as mayor of the state's largest city, and ran statewide in 1998. (for LG under Lee Fisher, losing 50-45 to Taft) But he's likely more moderate...

This is just academic, since Hackett is running for the Senate, but someone is incorrect.
The Constitution does not require members of Congress to live in their districts, only in their state. Do voters tend to prefer Congressmen who live in the district? Of course.
Does Hackett have to move to run for the House? Absolutely not.

Paul Hackett lives in OH-2. Short answer: no, not unless he moves.
