Ohio and Pa. Senate; Hillary Raising $ for N.H. Gov.

Here's a look at several political stories that have people in Washington talking today:

* Rep. Sherrod Brown (D) officially entered the Ohio Senate race this afternoon. "Earlier today, I began to inform my friends and colleagues that I will run for the United States Senate in 2006," he said in a statement. Brown joins Iraq war veteran Paul Hackett in the contest on the Democratic side. The two men will vie for the chance to face off against GOP Sen. Mike DeWine next November. Watch the Democratic-leaning blogosphere carefully over the next few days to see which candidate it chooses. Hackett was the bloggers' darling during his near-miss special election race in Ohio's 2nd District earlier this year; but Brown is no slouch himself among the "netroots" -- check this out. The early betting seems to be with Brown; he has Daily Kos on his side.

* Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's (R) political future is looking worse and worse.  A new independent poll showed state treasurer Bob Casey Jr. (D) with a whopping 52 percent to 34 percent edge.  Forty-one percent of those tested said Santorum deserves reelection; 42 percent said he does not.  Still, there's lots of time to go before Election Day, but this appears to be an uphill climb for Santorum.

* New Hampshire's best political writer -- John Di Staso of the Union-Leader -- has details on the Boston fundraiser, first reported in the Fix, that New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) is doing for Gov. John Lynch (D).  Di Staso nails down the date (Oct. 28) and notes that the two recently "exchanged messages" about New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary.  If you haven't bookmarked Di Staso's "Granite Status" column, do so immediately.
