Mark Warner's First Date (with the Netroots)
LAS VEGAS -- Mark Warner didn't break much new rhetorical ground during his address today at the Yearly Kos convention, delivering a stump speech that was politely, if not passionately, received by the crowd of liberal activists.
"In Virginia we know what it means to be a Democrat and we know how to win," said Warner, starting off a speech heavy on describing the accomplishments of his four years as governor of the commonwealth.
The root of that success, said Warner, was his willingness to move beyond traditional political posturing where "everyone looks at the wedge issues, how can we divide folks" to a more centrist approach aimed at appealing to voters on both sides of the partisan divide.
Warner received occasional applause today as he described the across-the-aisle work he did in Virginia, but it was not until he offered a few bits of red meat that the audience truly perked up.
Warner's biggest applause line came when he said the country needs an administration that "unites our friends and divides our enemy, not the reverse." He followed that up with a call for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign, which, not surprisingly, brought a loud cheer from the heavily progressive, "netroots" crowd.
Warner was introduced by Markos Moulitsas, the founder of the Daily Kos blog, who credited the governor's decision to speak at the convention as one of the keys to its success. "He put his credibility on the line to commit to doing this event," Moulitsas said of Warner. "He sent a message to the party that we are a force to be reckoned with."
Moulitsas was careful to note that his introduction of Warner did not constitute an endorsement, conceding only that the governor's presence at the convention amounted only to a "first date." He urged attendees not to rush to any decisions about their preferred 2008 candidate. "We don't have to make any choices right now," counseled Moulitsas
Warner quickly picked up on the courtship theme. "If that was the first date, I hope we can get a second date," he said at the start of his address. He closed his remarks, which ran roughly 25 minutes, saying: "Let's keep dating."
A somewhat obligatory standing ovation followed, an indication that though the progressive blogosphere is interested in Warner, a political marriage is still a ways off.

SandyK:
"Will you wash and kiss our feet to do so?"
I'm a couple days late for this one and likely no one will read this. But this kind of attitude just makes me shake my head and feel pessimistic for the future of the country. So many voters want to be stroked, flattered, and made to feel better about themselves (can anyone else but your own hard-working self truly do that?) - rather than simply voting for the best candidate. It seems like people have turned their potential votes into self-esteem-gathering bait rather than the electoral power it was meant to be.
I hear similar sad statements from working class social conservative types. I'll get frustrated at how easily they seem to be duped by George Bush types who have *anything* but their best interests at heart. But when I express this to them, they get defensive and say, "this is the elitist attitude that keeps losing elections for you guys". (note there is no response to my actual points, it is just about whether you made them feel smart or not)
Translation: "I really couldn't give a flying fig who the right candidate is for my interests and values, I just want someone to PLEASE stroke my ego and make me feel smart, because I'm very insecure about my intellect!"
Sheesh. God save the Republic from these intellectually fragile types.

"I'm not 100% sure who my pick for prez and vp are yet (who is 2 years out?), but I think that any comination of these five names really would be an AWESOME Democratic ticket - Bayh, Clark, Edwards, Richardson, Warner."
Ohio Guy...great post! I'm leaning a bit toward Warner right now because of the impressive job he did in Virginia. However, I'm excited about the other potential candidates you mentioned, so I take my initial indecisiveness as a good sign.
I honestly thought Bill Richardson would have been an excellent choice for VP the last two elections. The fact Howard Dean built such a grassroots base in the last election bodes well for somebody like Richardson, who has an incredible resume and who has more to say than the typical soundbyte allows. Dean built tremendous support using the Internet, and I think the blogosphere is a great tool for educating people about some of the great minds of the Democratic Party.
Question for you...Hillary doesn't run or doesn't get nominated. How do you see Bill Clinton's role (if any) in the 2008 election? I think that if we didn't have term limits, he would have won a third term (not that I'm advocating removing the limits, of course).

"What was the fate of the Cossacks in WWII?"
That's your argumment against Daily Kos? A nickname it's users happen to share with a band of nomadic warriors from Russia? What if we judged every group and organization based solely on it's mascot? Does that mean that the republicans are doomed to extinction b/c they are going to be poached for their ivory tusks?? LOL, oh my god you are stupid.
Sandy, this blog is for grown-ups. Run along to your sandbox little girl, at least until you can make some argument of substance.

Ohio Guy,
What was the fate of the Cossacks in WWII? Once you know that history, you'll learn the DK nickname is an omen to what's to come.
It's no wonder that Hannity has the Darths, and DK has Cossacks, huh?
Keep smoking that crack pipe, OG, it's about all the progression there is coming from a gulag camp.

That never existed in the first place (neither did a chicken in every pot, or 2 cars in every garage). It won't either, because that's money from the kitty, money the politicians want to spend on their perks.

"Mark Warner would be a great candidate for President that moderates will adore, and liberals like on Daily Kos like me will respect and support. He would make an excellant President, and his record, beliefs and vision is challenging my own support for John Edwards."
PopulistDem - I couldn't agree with you more. Warner is my guy. The more I read about his record and the more I see him on CSPAN the more and more I like him. How do you feel about Bill Richardson? He also had a great record as governor and actually more national and foreign policy experience than anyone (well, except Clark) having served as Energy Secretary and an ambassador on top of being governor.
I'm not 100% sure who my pick for prez and vp are yet (who is 2 years out?), but I think that any comination of these five names really would be an AWESOME Democratic ticket - Bayh, Clark, Edwards, Richardson, Warner.

Sandy your stupid rants get so off subject is is easily apparent to even some with less intelligence than you (if that's possible) that you are so desperate to get away from earlier statements you made that are just plain moronic.
Very pathetic Sandy - you can't respond intelligently to me so you insinuate that all Kossacks are like the Nazis and say that we have bad nicknames? OH NO!. Sandy, most kossacks have more intelligence in their excrement than you do in your brain.
Any more idiotic statements you want to make so I can prove them wrong, moron?
PS - I agreee with Drindl, us Democrats are not interested in hearing advice from republican blowhards on who to nominate for President in '08. Unless someone asks you in the future, do yourself a favor and keep it to yourself.

"See I'm the one of those independent voters you'll have to placate to vote for a candidate in 2006 and 2008. But it won't happen if you alienate us."
Sandy, I would bet my life on the fact that the vast majority of independent voters are not hate-filled morons like yourself, and therefore it will be a lot easier to get them to vote Democratic than you. And what the hell have Republicasn done for these independents in the past 6 years besides spend their money like crazy, start an uneccessary war of choice and trample on their civil liberties? How do you get off assuming that these voters will automatically vote republican ofter 6 and 8 years of Bush? Sandy, you ARE NOT representative of independents - 99.9% of independent voters don't go onto blogs and write lies about Democrats liek yourself. 99.9% will be open to the alternative that the democrats put forth and consider voting for them instead of the repubs who have driven the country into the ground over the last 6 years.

Well, I disagree with Sandy, but I have no clue or warrant to say that she is a loser for expressing her beliefs. Well even her comments show no true principle by any means. I think the reaction from her comments shows how messed up and polarized politics is today. No longer is it bashing politics beliefs while respecting the other side for wanting to achieve similar goals, now it has become that you hate the other side. Mark Warner would be a great candidate for President that moderates will adore, and liberals like on Daily Kos like me will respect and support. He would make an excellant President, and his record, beliefs and vision is challenging my own support for John Edwards. I think the 2008 lineup is pretty solid for the Democrats. We have a few good winners...well excluding Hillary. No...Hillary will have my vote and support IF she wins the nomination. I am just hoping she doesn't. Edwards, Warner, Bayh, and Wes Clark are Democrats who can get the swing Republicans and Independents needed to win. The independents will be more favored to vote our way anyway since they feel the GOP, rightfully so I might add, has run this country into the ground.

Sandy, you may not be a republican but you sure sound like one confused and angry loser. Do I want to win enough to kiss your feet? No, if people like you have to be courted, I think I'll just move to Canada.

Ohio Guy,
Didn't think you'd be posting to someone who actually knew the difference, huh? Don't judge books by their covers, dear. ;)
Finer points of inflection, let alone wordage escapes you, and shows why DK isn't ready for primetime, when it's defeated Cossacks (you know the ones that helped the Nazis too -- folks at DK are even stupid with their nicknames), can't understand "not at DK" means "not at DK".
Repeating, any more dumb questions, Ohio Guy?

How badly do you want to win? Will you wash and kiss our feet to do so? Or will it be 8, 12, 16, 32 more years of Republicans in office.
That's the real politick, dear. Voters don't vote unless they get some perk, and I'm not switching votes on trolls, empty promises and empty suit politicians.

Sandy I say agian I could care less about coding and whatever else worhtless work you do with your worthless life. All I know is DKos is much bigger and more influential than your precious DU, which is one of the crappiest sites I have ever been to, by the way. Did you design it?? Oh man that must be it! No wonder it's such a piece of crap!
"Kos is to the Democrats as Hannity is to the Conservatives -- each are liabilities to the "cause". Each cater to the extremes of their parties, which force the majority to distruct, either."
"I stated the exact same thing back at DK, but noooooooooo, they were too angry, too stupid, and extreme to even want to listen. It's too late now to change the format, since the public has an archives of what's really behind the new face lift."
"What's a moron is concluding what I didn't even state at DK."
Oh, poor Sandy, now you prove yourself to be a liar and hypoctrite on TOP of being a moron.
Now, any more stupid statements you want to make so I can prove them wrong moron??

Sandy--First, what I think Democrats don't need is election advice from Republicans. I don't really think y'all have our best interests at heart. And in any case, we won the most presidential votes in the last election.
Second, you have no right to speak for the 'Daily Kos' folks. You have no idea who they are, or what they want. There are many of us who would certainly prefer a more progressive candidate, but we will unite behind whomever our party chooses, and work hard to elect them. And I think for most of us, that includes Hillary. John Kerry was not my first choice, but I donated to his campaign and went door-to-door for votes anyway.
Progressives understand that this country is not only on the wrong track but in grave danger if we do not elect competent leaders who actually believe in policy in the public interest. The Republican party has gone off the rails and offers not solutions but scapegoating, bigotry and demagoguery--not to mention shifting the burden of taxation from the wealthy to the middle class. So I think we, as Democrats, will be able to unite despite some idiological difference, because of the frightening and unstable future we will face if we don't.

I can see a lot of SNL skits out of that comment.
That is how to kill a campaign as well. I wonder if the Dems even have an iota on PR, since they keep biting themselves with their own mouths.
But here's a clue: Warner won't have the popular support. I know Dems want a Southern candidate to pull in the Southern and Midwestern interest and vote. But Warner doesn't have the actual "roots" base to pull that off (Edwards did, but he played the finger in the wind game, which got folks to dismiss him due to it). What will draw them by the droves is a Sam Nunn type Democrat (which will fracture the GOP, too).
But the Daily Kos folks would rather wither on the vine before nominating a Nunn candidate. Their loss is the conservatives gain (as nothing can be done when folks can't get elected to do any legislation -- which is why you elect a conservative Democrat first, not wait 40 years for a "revolution").

I am a pretty liberal populist Democrat but I would support Mark Warner any day of the week. I have seen his speeches on CSPAN many times, and his best one I have seen was the one that aired last week in New Hampshire. He almost won me over. He talks with conviction, and truly knows what direction our country needs to take to progress our country into this new world. He advocates new ideas, too old and new solutions in a way that shows me that he is a true progressive. Edwards is my candidate, but Warner is coming up strong. He will be strong in the primaries with his excellant speaking ability, tons of cash in the bank, and common sense and strong solutionds may end him up with the Democratic nomination. He may have not won over the far left, and he may not need to. He just has to make it so they don't hate him, like they hate Hillary Clinton.

Any three. Heck, I'll settle for two.
One?
