Maryland's Political Clambake
Who was J. Millard Tawes?
A Democrat, Tawes served as governor of Maryland from 1959 to 1967. He was born in Crisfield in 1894 and died there in 1979. At the time of his death, The Post's David Maraniss wrote: "Tawes' political career was marked by an extraordinary ability to situate himself in the middle of contending geographic, economic and political interests."
Tawes's longest -- and surely most enjoyable -- legacy in Maryland politics is the yearly political gathering held in his honor in his hometown. The 30th annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake happens today in Crisfield from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET; Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R), former Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D), and Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley will be among the many pols in attendance.
Regular readers know The Fix has a weak spot for political gatherings that feature fish and beer. Expect a full report Thursday on the gathering.

Actually Chris should do more homework on the event that he feeds his face at--it is NOT a clambake as that is not the symbol of Crisfield or of MD. It is a crab feast. Period. And now a symbol of global change gripping the eastern shore as the local crab industry gives way to imported crab. Really guys, clambakes area a yankee thang.

Honor Tawes ? ! I grew up in Maryland during the 60s and Tawes was the biggest
do nothing piece of dogcrap to ever blight the governor's office. The S&L scandal which bankrupted thousands of Marylanders took place on his watch. His successor Spiro T. Agnew was a flaming progressive compared to Tawes. You ought to be more select about where you feed your face.
Shame on you !

Chris - any chance for an apology for not doing your homework on the Cynthia McKinney race? It appears you didnt research any polling or interview anyone in the field, and simply dismissed Hank Johnson's chances, after reading other opinions in the national press. Is this correct? While you are usually one of the best political reporters out there and many others didn't see this coming - it would be great to see a follow-up post!
