Mitt's Media Blast

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's decision to begin his television advertising campaign in a series of early primary states today signals a new phase in the run for the Republican presidential nomination.

To date, the Republican and Democratic candidates seeking the White House have played an inside game -- recruiting key activists and donors, putting into place a national organization and visiting early-voting primary and caucus states. All of that activity flies under the radar of the average person who likely has no idea the presidential race has even begun.

But, in going up with a 60-second commercial in select markets in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan and Florida, (over the next week) Romney is vastly expanding the universe of people he hopes to reach and forcing his opponents to re-evaluate when they might begin their own paid advertising campaigns in early states.

The reason for Romney's decision is two fold.

First, he needs to transition from a candidate with great potential to a great candidate. Romney still trails Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani badly in both state and national polling. Romney must, therefore, start to make his case for the nomination sooner rather than later. He has run a deft campaign thus far by successfully wooing the Republican establishment and Washington's chattering class but now must prove that early success is predictive of how he will be received by the broader Republican electorate.

The second reason for Romney early ad blitz is simple: because he can. Romney has proven an able fundraiser -- collecting more than $6 million on a single day last month. He will have more than enough financial resources to build his name identification in early states.

The ad itself is nicely produced -- kudos to Romney media consultant Alex Castellanos -- and seeks to present Romney as an outsider with a record of getting things done. Clips of Romney speaking on the campaign trail with narration that touts Romney's accomplishments both in and out of public life.

"Every place that Mitt has gone he has solved problems that people said were nearly impossible," says Romney's wife Ann at the start of the ad.

Romney himself goes on to mention a variety of popular Republican issues -- taxes, spending, judges -- as the words "Strong. New. Leadership." appear on the screen.

"This is not a time for more talk and dithering in Washington," says Romney in an attempt to further drive home his outside-of-Washington resume. "It's a time for action."

The ad is aimed at introducing Mitt Romney to the voters of these influential early states and should do nicely on that front. We would expect Romney's numbers to immediately bump up slightly in polling out of the Hawkeye State as those who were unfamiliar with the former governor are exposed to him through this ad. The real test for Romney is how quickly can he grow his support in places like Iowa and South Carolina and whether he can sustain that growth under what will likely be a withering assault from McCain, Giuliani and others.

What a heck for those bigots and Mitt's detractors with brains filled with craps. hahahaha,... they are so furious of seeing that Mitt Romney is fast rising and becoming formidable and has gained much attention from the majority of American people. The American people is so open in embracing Mitt's vision for an American dream. How stupid to think that these moron individuals who, with just little knowledge of a good platform and are just full of nonsense ideas, bigotries, lies and frustrations, are tarnishing the image of this good site.

Well, that's reality, little knowledge is dangerous. Uncultured people needs refinement. If Mitt is compared with them, well, Mitt just laugh at them. And the majority of Americans who love MItt.

And, you might ask, what is the fix to our dilemma?

First, we must begin caring for each other no matter what, right now. We must begin assisting and helping all those in need amongst us. We cannot afford to wait for these "elected officials" to do something, anything, because this is NOT their agenda. Their agenda is the opposite.

Second, we must admit, acknowledge and know in our gut that this is the case and we must choose to take a stand against the invisible "hidden hand" of the (warmonger military industrial complex plus) Illuminati guiding both sides of the illusory aisle, both parties, that keep raising funds and competing, supposedly, for our votes with empty promises delivering nothing; that launches million and billion dollar (media) campaigns while we have less and less; that forms committees and attends conferences and seminars at our expense while many work two or three jobs trying to make ends meet, with tremendous job insecurity and balancing debt, starving and going without health care, etc. instead of going after a scapegoat (Israel, us Jews, etc.) as ALWAYS before.

Third, we must demand answers and responsibility NOW from all "elected officials," why it is that it takes decades to allocate funds and to decide that we all need health care - like they have - for one, and why it takes a decade or more to increase the minimum wage (by two mighty dollars) all the while the cost of living has gone up and more and more people have been, and hear this one well, DELIBERATELY, BY CALCULATED GLOBAL AND LOCAL SKULL AND BONES DESIGN, left behind to cause and launch a scapegoat hunt while the masters of deception hide behind their curtain.

There's one start.

Any other ideas?

Do anything but do not succumb to gender, race, nationality, language, religion or "partisan" -based hate as this is EXACTLY what the Illuminati and its off-shoots want and wait for and thrive on to have us all at each others throats, distracting us from them and their agenda.

"Love thy neighbor."

Mitt Romney disqualified himself from any and all Presdential Races by launching his campaign at a Nazi and Hitler supporter Henry Ford Museum.

They are all the same Illuminati puppets if you as much as scratch the surface - with some of them no scratching is even needed...

corporatism = fascism

in yesteryear's Germany, corporatist/fascist nazi military and civilians wore the Skull and Bones symbol on their uniforms and their minds, and here we had the most recent 2004 Presidential election - wink, wink - with two Skull and Bones members, one "Republican" and the other "Democrat."

Awaken you from this illusion of "elected officials..." The Illuminati agenda is to destroy this country, and both sides are working for the same master.

aussie view - well, for one thing, he described himself as "a cattle rancher in charge of a bunch of vegetarians." now, i do not mean to imply that being called a "vegetarian" is an insult - i'd have to apologize to several of my friends. but the fact that he said it to a red-state audience, and got the laugh he was looking for, indicates to me that he feels no loyalty to the state which elected him... now that he doesn't want the job of governor anymore.
that's the only direct quote i remember, but it's a general theme with him. he has more indirectly slammed the state's policies on abortion and same-sex marriage by disparaging those who support them as immoral and unhealthy for society. he has dismissed public services and publicly funded programs as ineffective when compared to the almighty market. (and accordingly, has cut them so that their inability to perform without sufficient revenue will prove his point.) he has even gone so far as to imply that those who support them are holding the state economy back by denying returns to potential (wealthy) investors. his tv commercial apparently trumpets him as "the republican governor who turned around a democratic state." as a resident of said state, i never saw a need to turn, and can only interpret this statement as meaning "bent to his will." and he insults the intelligence of massachusetts and other voters by assuming that they will either be unable to remember his previous statements and positions or uninterested in calling him on it - especially in the age of internet research. he also recently depicted his '92 primary vote for Paul Tsongas - a decent and intelligent man who had a track record of community involvement and fiscal responsibility - as an underhanded ploy to benefit george h.w. bush by supporting the nomination of a liberal who couldn't win. is this the kind of man we want in the white house, making these kinds of decisions for these kinds of reasons?

I see a great opportunity for clarification about Sen. Kerry and the $87 billion. My memory is that he voted against it before he voted for it. My memory also is that he voted against it because it did not include language that would say that Iraqis would pay for a part of this war; then he wrote his own bill with language saying the Iraqis would pay for a part of this war, which did not pass; and then he voted for the $87 billion because the money was for the troops and if he couldn't change it he voted for it in the end. Since the $87 billion continues to crop up, I wonder if anyone has confirmation on how that process really worked? Most prefer the slogans, but if we are going to comment we should know the details. Any help out there on this one?

Calling Mitt Romney the republican John Kerry is harsh on John Kerry (I expect nothing less from you Sandy, but in the other thread others were calling him that as well). In all honesty, on how many issues did Kerry really 'flip flop' more than your average politician. I know his "I voted for the $87billion before I voted against it" sounded bad, but it was more a matter of bad phrasing than a real flip flop. Romney on the other hand has flopped on almost every major core issue out there. Read http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/19/AR2007021900916.html for a good article on Romney's makeover.
John Kerry, for all his faults as a presidential candidate, is 10 times the man Mitt Romney is. Seriously I am at a loss to understand why this guy thinks he is qualified to be president. I don't think the Republican primary voters are silly enough to fall for his opportunism. If he is nominated he will be crushed by the Democratic nominee.

FC, Romney is not providing universal health care for residents of Mass. The law that was passed and enacted simply states that all residents of must MUST purchase health insurance.

The state will assist low income families to get the insurance but does not say how it will be funded. Middle income families that make too much to get assistance but still can not afford health insurance will instead be punished by the state for not having insurance. Some model.

Yes I live in Mass.

One reason that Romney will need to use the media more than traditional grass roots politics is he will never be able to respond to the personal questions about his faith and how anyone could believe in it once they realize how it was founded.

The Mormon Church has solid family values but it is a closed society and it will be pretty hard to fathom either Independents or Democrats taking anyone seriously who belongs to a church that was founded by a boy who looked into a hat to translate magical gold plates he found "buried" in the ground(and was convicted of treasure hunting).

A church founded by a "prophet" http://lds-mormon.com/jsmith.shtml who according to the journals of women in the church, would show up at church members homes and ask to sleep with their wives and daughters as a test of faith. A church were child abuse is an epidemic and where more women take anti-depressants than any other group in the country.

Although many of the women in the early history of the church were part of the women's suffrage movement and many "sister-wives" were some of the first women to go to medical school in this country the church became so insulated that they got stuck in the 1950's.

Although the church no longer "practices" polygamy they only stopped practicing it in order to become a State. They will ex-communicate anyone who practices it still but they also believe that is the eternal order (if Moses and Abraham did it so will they) and that men will not only be Gods in the next life but have plural wives. I doubt that most Christians will put up with a Temple endowed Mormon who believes that you need to know secret handshakes (that used to be nearly identical to the ones that Mason's also use - points of fellowship) and wears symbols on his underclothes in order to get into Heaven.

I seriously doubt that the Christian right nor the liberal left will elect someone who is this far out of step with the rest of society that he think is not merely the head of his family but will be the God to his family's descendants and have his own planet. I honor anyone's right to practice their faith but Mormonism is not simply a faith but a closed culture that bears little relationship to the lives most of us live. As Family's and neighbors they are great but as leaders of the free world it would be dangerous. Oddly he might be able to reach out to the Muslims since both don't drink, don't smoke, don't have pre-marital sex (although the women in Utah often are married very young).

They also believe that it is a prophecy for a Mormon to be President (although this is largly left over from their founders attempt to run for President just before he was arrested for destroying a printing press). The founder of their church not only practiced polygamy behind his wife Emma's back but he would show up at members homes and ask for their daughters or wives to sleep with them as a test of faith. (the early journals of women in the church are very sad).

The church has a lay ministry (not-paid until you get to the regional levels and tend to be so busy with church callings that they don't have time to be invovled with non-members) and many of the same problems that happened in the Catholic church with child sex abuse are quietly being addressed here as well.

Although many many of my family and neighbors are happy, healthy, well adjusted people LDS women also have some of the highest rates of anti-depressant use in the country.

Mitt simply lacks the intellectual curiosity to confront the founding of his own faith and although he is pretty to look at I seriously doubt once the press and the far right start to look at his faith he will be a player.

Then again this country had a President for 8 years who lacked any intellectual curiosity and another one who listened to his wife's horoscope in order to make major decisions. It is scary to realize that we really elect often elect a spokesmodel. Can you imagine if the Republician's ever got a CEO with a solid family to run?

btw I was married to a fifth generation member of the church for over 15 years before we both left the faith. I know the culture inside and out and many of my best friends are still LDS, but it is scary to imagine the church running this country.

Besides, nobody here is trying to write a scholarly paper. Wikipedia is a fine resource for this kind of discussion. At least it makes an attempt to be impartial. If not he will continue the destruction of the Republican Party....which might not be a bad thing. The elephant party continues to pander to the christian right who would dictate which Americans are "moral" and which ain't and be part of the punishment of those that they deem un-worthy. With any luck, the people of this Nation will kich the elephant down the path of the Whigs and the Know Nothings. This link goes to a Boston Globe article entitled "Romney distances self from Mass. health plan". He wants to hide the fact that he worked with Democrats to pass a law that liberals like and conservatives don't.

And that's the problem with Romney. His record is fine. He campaigned for senator and governor in Massachusetts as a moderate, and then governed as a moderate. But now he's decided to remake himself as a conservative. That makes it look like he's suddenly changed his stance on many issues. Don't you think it's a problem that he's suddenly trying to appeal to conservatives?

Pinochet is a big hero among many on the radical right, because he did what they would like to do -- kill anyone who isn't as radically right as they are:

'Pinochet headed a military dictatorship in Chile after the 1973 coup against Socialist President Salvador Allende. Tens of thousands of labor unionists, students, communists and other Allende supporters were murdered or "disappeared" in the years following the coup.
'
Hated as he was, Pinochet would have been dealt with by the Chilean working class long ago had it not been for the backing of the U.S. Pentagon and Central Intelligence Agency. Evidence of that backing began to leak out when the New York Times obtained declassified Federal Bureau of Investigation documents related to Pinochet.'

He was CEO of Baine Capital, launching thousands of companies. (Staples, Dominos Pizza ring a bell?)

He turned the Salt Lake Olympic games around, turning a profit after inheriting the project $379 Million in debt.

Govenor of MA. He balanced a $3 billion budget deficit. (And he didn't raise taxes to do it!!!) He also reformed the health care system in MA so everyone has insurance. It's being used as a model for the rest of the country.

If you want someone to fix the Social Security mess, he's the one to do it. Social Security and Health Care are going to be the biggest problems our country faces. Romney shows more promise than any other that he can get this done.

Here are just a few fun facts about good old Jesse Helms, the "american hero."

"Helms was an ardent supporter of now-deceased Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet"

"Helms opposed the Martin Luther King holiday bill"

"After a protest during his 1986 visit to Mexico, Helms opined: "All Latins are volatile people. Hence, I was not surprised at the volatile reaction.""

Yep, definitely my kind of guy.

FH & Blarg -- Glad to hear I'm not the only one that's sad that politicians have to be so "pure" these days to get elected. I'm pretty darn liberal on most issues, but I respect intellectual honestly a lot more than single-issue pandering. It truly would be great to see more folks in both parties willing to risk offending specific interest groups where they truly believe a different policy is needed. For what it's worth, I think Senator Obama is starting to do a bit of that. In a recent speech in front of a ton of teacher union members, he advocated increased pay along with much greater accountability -- including the possibility of merit pay. Might not sound like much, but for a Democrat relatively bold stuff.

Who Rules America?

by Prof. James Petras

Global Research, January 13, 2007
Information Clearing House

In the broadest and deepest sense, understanding how the US political system functions, the decisions of war and peace are taken, who gets what, how and why, requires that we address the question of 'Who rules America?' In tackling the question of 'ruling' one needs to clarify a great deal of misunderstandings, particularly the confusion between those who make governmental decisions and the socio-economic institutional parameters which define the interests to be served. 'Ruling' is exacting: it defines the 'rules' to be followed by the political and administrative decision-makers in formulating budgetary expenditures, taxes, labor and social legislation, trade policy, military and strategic questions of war and peace. The 'rules' are established, modified and adjusted according to the specific composition of the leading sectors of a ruling class (RC). Rules change with shifts in power within the ruling class. Shifts in power can reflect the internal dynamics of an economy or the changing position of economic sectors in the world economy, particularly the rise and decline of economic competitors.

The 'rules' imposed by one economic sector of the RC at a time of favorable conditions in the world economy, will be altered as new dominant economic sectors emerge and unfavorable external conditions weaken the former dominant economic sectors. As we shall describe below the relative and absolute decline of the US manufacturing sector is directly related to the rise of a multidimensional 'financial sector' and to the greater competitiveness of other manufacturing countries. The result is an accelerating process of liberalization of the economy favored by the ascending financial sectors. Liberalization in pursuit of unregulated flows of investments, buyouts, acquisitions and trade increases the financial sector's profits, commissions, incomes and bonuses. Liberalization facilitates the financial sector's acquisition of assets. The declining competitiveness of the older ruling class manufacturing sector dependent on statist protectionism and subsidies leads to 'rear-guard' policies, attempting to fashion an unwieldy policy of liberalization abroad and protectionism at home.

The answer to the question of who rules depends on specifying the historical moment and place on the world economy. The answer is complicated by the fact that shifts among 'sectors' of the ruling class involves a prolonged 'transitional period'. During this period declining and ascending sectors may intermingle and the class members of declining sectors 'convert' to the rising sector. Hence while power between economic sectors may change, the leading class groupings may not lose out or decline. They merely shift their investments and adapt to the new and more lucrative opportunities created by the ascending sector.

"In 1990, working for Republican Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina, he produced perhaps the most racially divisive TV ad in campaign history. Called "White Hands," it featured an angry white worker crumpling up a job rejection notice. He had lost out because "they had to give it to a minority.""

And the ad is not true how, exactly?

Scenarios such as the one depicted in the ad happen every day to tens of thousands of people.

Harvey Gantt was a staunch supporter of affirmative action.

Why should white people vote for a candidate who favors discriminatory policies which place them at a disadvantage?

And why should it be off limits for an ad to be run which informs people that a candidate supports policies which discriminate against them?

That's like saying if a segregationist candidate is running, the opposing campaign shouldn't be able to inform black (and white) people of his views.

Only in the deranged, demented, out of touch, marijuana-twisted minds of liberals was the "Hands" ad unacceptable.

But to liberals, the racist ads against Bobby Jindal are somehow acceptable.

The "Hands" ad was completely true and totally within the bounds of fair politics, considering Gantt's views on affirmative action.

And Jesse Helms was one of the most honorable, skilled, and respected Senators of the 20th century.

Every American owes him a debt of gratitude for his patriotic service to this nation in that "august chamber" known as the Senate.

He was the best NC Senator within recent memory, and I wish he had stayed, so I could have voted for him in 2008.

Jesse Helms is an American hero, unlike his detractors.

The Romney campaign officially jumped the shark with the Tsongas flap and was losing momentum. He looked terrible on This Week, too. So, given that there are no dollar figures attached to the ad buys, I'd wager this is more aimed at the chattering classes than anything else and shore up his tenuous hold on "major candidate status."

Especially after the Jefferson case finally goes to court and hits the headlines.

Colin: I think the problem is the electoral college and the funneling of so many different ideologies into 2 parties. Mitt is trying to fit in this tiny mold, which is, unfortunately, mandated to win the Republican nomination. I honestly think the flaw in the system is with the nominating process itself, and I have no idea how to fix it to be truthful. One thing we know for sure, it's hard for anyone with an ideology that veers too far from the expected norms of a party to be nominated...see McCain and his bid to conform even as we speak.

New Jersey Democratic legislative officials were hit with a volley of federal subpoenas yesterday, in a rapidly expanding corruption investigation into the Statehouse by U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie. Christie is seeking information on how millions in public funds were handed out over the last three years of the Democratic party controlled legislature. It was the latest development in a federal probe that began last April with an investigation into state Sen. Wayne Bryant D-Camden, who was accused by a federal monitor of using his position to steer funding to the states medical university after he received a no-work job there. Among those who received subpoenas were Senate President Richard Codey D-Essex Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenny D-Hudson Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts D-Camden and Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman D-Mercer, legislative officials confirmed. Trenton is on fire, declared Assemblyman Kevin OToole R-Essex, as news of the subpoenas broke. This is equivalent to Rome burning.

I totally agree, Colin, and I said the same thing the other day. Mitt could have been a decent candidate if he ran as a moderate who has experience at cooperating with Democrats. But he's decided to run as a conservative, which magnifies his weaknesses (religion, past support for liberal causes, etc.) tremendously.

Ah, yes the rich must all be crooks, no one can make an honset buck anymore, and it all must be had at the cost of the little guy. It is a shame that all those call center jobs (poor paying partime work) have been shipped overseas and replaced with other jobs. If you have studied economics at all you would understand that labor is a commodity and that there are dramtic shifts in labor markets and job types. After all what happended to all the textile jobs of the 50s, well now they manufacture high tech fabrics and write software. The world is changing, true leaders are the ones that can see it, and then adapt, and not just sit around and compain about the change. Mr. Romney's experience (read up on it before commenting) shows that he has a proven track record of effecting change in business and government. I don't say this to be a supporter of Mr. Romeny but rather to highlight the ignorance of some of the comments above. In case no one has noticed we have the lowest unemployment rate in history. There must always be some unemployment in the system, again read up on economics.

You know what's funny? If Mitt was running as the centrist, pragmatic, problem-solving outsider that he was for most of his time in Mass, I'd actually be excited because it might mean that the Republican party was coming back to its senses. The guy legitimately HAS done some impressive things in the private sector, and his OLD views -- before he started his current round of pandering -- were actually quite reasonable.

Unfortunately, it's hard to take ANYONE seriously who so drastically changes his views on a host of issues purely for political gain. I respect pro-life voters, espescially those willing to talke about the issue intelligently. I respect Republicans who genuinely want to reduce the size of government, rather than JUST cut taxes without cutting spending. But a guy like Mitt? Hard to respect anything he says, since god only knows if he'll stand by it tomorrow.

He's obviously done his share of good work. Who could complain about someone that can save jobs, get rid of debt (oh wait, does America have any debt?) and, do it fast?
I'm sure he's not perfect but when have we ever had a perfect president? We should go for the best available and quit gambling on some of these other people that have been in high ranking political positions for so long and yet have accomplished so little.

The ad is great for Mitt Romney. It lauds his accomplishments as past chair of the Olympics and as a major businessman (valued at over 500 million dollas). Romney has solid credentials as a business first politician and that is why he will win. This country is in dire straights when it comes to global competition and the national debt is out of control. It will take a Washington-outsider to reverse fortunes and no one has his resume when it comes to turning around failures.

WASHINGTON - A New York man accused of trying to help terrorists in Afghanistan has donated some $15,000 to the House Republicans' campaign committee over three years.

Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari pleaded not guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan to charges that include terrorism financing, material support of terrorism and money laundering.

From April 2002 until August 2004, the man also known as "Michael Mixon" gave donations ranging from $500 to $5,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee, according to Federal Election Commission reports and two campaign donor tracking Web sites, http://www.politicalmoneyline.com and http://www.opensecrets.org.

The NRCC did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Tuesday about whether it would return the donations.

In the federal indictment, the government said Alishtari, 53, of Ardsley, N.Y., accepted an unspecified amount of money to transfer $152,000 to Pakistan and Afghanistan to support an Afghanistan terrorist training camp. He also stands accused of causing the transfer of about $25,000 from a bank account in New York to an account in Montreal, money the government says was to be used to provide material support to terrorists./

What CC doesn't tell you about castellanos... this ad is waaaaay out of character for him... but he likely won't turn really vile until later.. interesting isn't it, that all the republican biggies are hiring hit men and smear merchants?

'It was during that 1994 Florida campaign, working for Jeb Bush's first but failed bid for election, that Castellanos showed why he's considered one of the fathers of the modern attack ad.

Castellanos launched a classic October surprise. Less than two weeks before the election, with his candidate ahead in the polls, Castellanos produced a raw, emotionally charged spot featuring a Florida mother whose 10-year-old daughter had been murdered in 1980. On camera, she complained that Chiles had refused to sign the killer's death warrant, "because he's too liberal on crime." Addressing the people of Florida, the mother said, "I know Jeb Bush. He'll make criminals serve their sentences and enforce the death penalty. Lawton Chiles won't."

The accusation produced panic inside the Chiles campaign. "We had done all the research [on relevant death sentence cases] and we couldn't figure out how we missed this guy," says Krog. Aides quickly unearthed the answer: Florida courts were still hearing the killer's appeal, making it impossible for Chiles to act.

The Palm Beach Post condemned the attack ad as a "despicable lie that proves again why Jeb [Bush] is unfit to be governor." The Orlando Sun-Sentinel accused Bush of demagoguery, protesting the spot was "shamelessly false, irresponsible and tasteless," while the Miami Herald complained it had "sunk to new depths."

The ads backfired on Bush, allowing Chiles to win one of the closest gubernatorial races in Florida history. "You've got to be sure of your facts. Even with a lot of money, bad facts override it every time," says Krog.

And that wasn't even Castellanos' most infamous attack ad. In 1990, working for Republican Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina, he produced perhaps the most racially divisive TV ad in campaign history. Called "White Hands," it featured an angry white worker crumpling up a job rejection notice. He had lost out because "they had to give it to a minority."

More recently, in 2000, his firm National Media produced an ad mocking Al Gore's stance on prescription drugs, flashing the word "RATS" on the screen for a split second. Castellanos denied using subliminal advertising. Forced on the defensive, Bush had to yank the spot.

Over the years Castellanos has produced a trail of caustic ads either pulled off the air, like the Bush spot in Florida, or judged by his own Republican clients to be too misleading or biting for public consumption. '

mitt romney is the quintessential republican, but a very different kind from william or the king. romney is the kind that looks down from balconies and through limousine windows and out from behind podiums thinking, this is all for me. and thinking, i was destined for this - and, i know that god has blessed me and wants me to rule because i have been so financially successful. and thinking, the establishment of a disciplined right-wing order with religious overtones will further cement me in the minds of the masses as the prophet i am, and provide exactly the kind of ordered, productive society with which i am comfortable, and in which each knows his place and his assignment.
no, i can't read minds, but i have lived in massachusetts for 25 years. in that time, i have seen several governors, and romney has been unique both in his lack of interest in doing the job for which he was elected and his lack of respect for the people who elected him. as others have noted, his positions on social issues flapped in the winds of public opinion, tied to his ambition rather than to either ethics or common sense. as others have further noted, he spent the vast majority of the past year traveling the country and insulting the people of massachusetts to red-state audiences. trust me, we here were not laughing. the one clear memory i have of him during his last term in office was when following the tragic death of a woman crushed when a "big dig" concrete panel fell from the ceiling of a tunnel onto her car, he was photographed examining the tunnel with civil engineers. he was wearing a hard hat atop his executive suit - an image which called to mind mike dukakis riding in that tank in 1988. then, after firing the transportation chief - who he conveniently blamed for the entire situation - romney was off to campaign once again. on the state's dime, he not having announced for president yet. he's a phony, self-absorbed, disinterested hack, who would be wrong as president.

CC - You said: "The ad itself is nicely produced -- kudos to Romney media consultant Alex Castellanos -- and seeks to present Romney as an outsider with a record of getting things done. Clips of Romney speaking on the campaign trail with narration that touts Romney's accomplishments both in and out of public life."

Well, you saw much more in this ad than I did. No specific accomplishments at all, just vague references to his "successes" and the fact he is for "motherhood and apple pie"... he doesn't touch Iraq.

About the kind of ad one would expect from an empty suit.
