Dubya's Biggest Mistake?
CNN's Wolf Blizter just asked each candidate to name President George W. Bush's "biggest mistake." None of the candidates gave a direct answer, but here's a sampling of their answers in a word (or three):
* McCain: Spending
* Giuliani: Accountability (lack thereof)
* Romney: Too "small bore" (that "vision" thing)
* Brownback: Spending
* Tommy Thompson: No New Ideas
* Tancredo: Ran as a conservative, governed as a liberal
* Paul: The war, empire building
* Gilmore: Principle (not standing on it)
* Hunter: Not focusing on the family
* Huckabee: Excess taxes, immigration, lack of communication

As a conservative Republican, I think Bush's biggest mistake is the unnecessary spending early in his Presidency. McCain and Brownback had it right. Guiliani is right that lack of accountability is a problem. Huckabee had a point that lack of communication is a major problem throughout this Presidency. The other things Huckabee said, however, were pandering for votes. But McCain, Brownback and Guiliani were on target.

No one noted his cystic acne (take also a look at Robt. Gates &, yup, Paris Hilton). He ought to stop picking at it & have Brownie call Proactiv.

Just after the 2000 election, President-elect W. could have made himself a statesman of momentous proportion by helping bring democracy to the United States. Yes, he could have launched a crusade to abolish the Electoral College and secure direct popular election of the president. Had he achieved that, there would have been no need to launch a foreign war to acquire the popularity to win in 2004. Of course, being a statesman requires a sense of history, plus a desire to make America a better place for everyone--not just the wealthiest one percent and the military-industrial complex. Alas.
