Romney and Giuliani: Surely You Jest

Former Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani have done this debate thing before and it shows.

After a decidedly serious answer from Thompson about the possibility of a recession, Romney found a way to work one of his now trademark zingers (corny yet effective) into his own answer. He castigated Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D-Mich.) for her approach to taxes, joking that he worried she might put a "tax on the debate before we got finished."

Giuliani was up next. Asked about making predictions about the economy, Giuliani referenced his relatively poor record as a baseball prognosticator (his beloved Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs last night). Titters from the crowd, though not the roar that Romney enjoyed. Giuliani followed up with a vote of confidence in Yankee manager Joe Torre calling him "the best manager in the history of the Yankees at least in the modern era."

The GOP candidates must all denounce their party's irresponsible free spending ways that have increased the deficit 56% in six years. Such lack of stewardship makes the proverbial tax 'n spend liberal look like a penny pinching tight wade. This before the Republicans can reasonably attack the Democrats for their spending habits.

I'm curious. Does Giuliani really think that going on and on about the Yankees will sell well with voters?
