Prediction Time: South Carolina

It's that time again!

Voting has already begun in today's South Carolina Democratic primary -- the last meaningful contest before the tsunami of states set to vote on Feb. 5.

That means this is one of your last chances to win a coveted Fix t-shirt, now designed and heading into production. The rules of the game are unchanged. In the comments section below, offer your prediction on the top three finishers (with percentages) in the Palmetto State as well as the storyline coming out of today's vote. (If you are unable to pick the top three in some order, you will be officially banned from The Fix; with the departure of Rep. Dennis Kucinich on Friday, there are only three candidates still running.) Polls close in South Carolina at 7 p.m. Eastern time so any predictions submitted after that time won't be considered.

The person who comes closest to the actual result and the individual who best foresees the storyline out of South Carolina wins a t-shirt. (Having seen these t-shirts, I can honestly say they are the sort of thing you actually want to win.) It's that simple.

Looking for guidance? Check out the summary of South Carolina polling at pollster.com and Real Clear Politics -- two must-bookmark sites for political junkies.

Barack Obama - 41%

Hillary Clinton - 39%

Roland Martin is on CNN talking about how apparent it is that Bill Clinton is using the "Southern strategy" against Sen. Obama. This is ridiculous. Has anybody read Craig Crawford's comments about how the press needs some kind of intervention over the way they've treated the candidate and her husband?

Anyway, the spin out of this will be that Obama's win wasn't resounding enough to give him any real mo' going into Feb. 5. Hilary acquits herself well. Edwards does just well enough to not be considered a total joke.

Obama narrowly wins SC in an expected vote from african americans. Clinton wins greater than expected black voters, and Obama wins greater than expected white voters. This all means that neither candidate has any obvious path to an automatic victory on super tuesday. Edwards stronger than expected third place finish means that he is staying in to play king/queen/peace maker if possible.

So basically, no real story changes, except that Obama and Clinton are not as racially charged as everyone expects.

Narrative: As expected Obama wins SC, Hillary dismisses the win due to large black turnout favoring Obama. Her camp spins it as Obama actually losing ground due to a closer than expected margin of victory. Edwards forges ahead looking forward to Super Tuesday.

Expect the racial rhetoric to continue from the Clintons, especially if he wins big in SC. The question will shift from, "Is he black enough?" to "Is he just a black candidate?" With every win he'll be cast less as a Bryant Gumbal and more as Flava Flav's twin.

PS I wouldn't put it past the good ol boys and girls in SC to vote Hillary ahead of Obama and see her win by a narrow margin. The polls put him ahead anywhere from 8-12 points. He may actually need that to be a 12-16 point spread. NH made exit polling unreliable in this "race."

Racialization of the 2008 Democratic primary results in a narrow Obama win with Clinton declaring a virtual victory ("If we'd only had a few more days . . . .") and a surprisingly strong showing for Edwards. Analysis: The "Bradley Effect" plus cross-pressuring effect of negative campaign (causing suppressed black turnout) results in narrow Obama margin.

For all intents and purposes, the Obama campaign ends in SC as the nation comes to the realisation that the first successful
African American presidential nominee must do more than offer platitudes such as "Change You Can Believe In." Sadly, his glaring lack of specifics made many a voter understand that the only real change they saw from Obama was skin colour. Sure, the Clinton machine played tough; but how else could it get the the point across. Meanwhile, Edwards wins everyone's respect as the man who might have won it all if he had been more willing to embrace the center; but, he showed real character on the left (even though, like Romney, some of his positions might have been a little manufactured for 2008). Still, no matter who winds up the Dem nominee, John would make a great AG and the real winner for many of us is Elizabeth Edwards whose grit is inspirational. She is the Poster Person for class and courage.
