Clinton's "3 a.m. Phone Call" Ad
UPDATE, 5:55 pm: Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) campaign is now on the air with an ad that directly responds to the "3 am phone call" commercial launched by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in Texas earlier today.
The commercial touts Obama's "judgment and courage" in opposing the Iraq war from the start and his clarity to see that the war distracted the country from rooting out terrorists in Afghanistan. "In a dangerous world, it's judgment that matters," says the ad's narrator.
ORIGINAL POST
With just five days left before the critical Ohio and Texas primaries, Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton's (N.Y.) campaign is out with a provocative new ad that raises the specter of a future world crisis and asks voters who they would want in the White House if such an event occurred.
Without specifically naming frontrunning rival Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), the TV ad constitutes Clinton's strongest effort yet to try to undermine Democrats' confidence in Obama's experience and ability to handle an international crisis if he is elected president.
Here's the ad, which began running this morning in Texas, and is already drawing comparisons to a similar spot run by Walter Mondale in 1984:
"One of the most important duties of the President is ensuring the safety of the American people," said retired General Wesley Clark of the commercial. "Inevitably, another national security crisis will occur. And when it does, voters shouldn't have to wonder whether their President will be ready. As President, Hillary will be ready to act swiftly and decisively."
Without mentioning Obama in either the ad or in Clark's comments, it's clear that the goal of the spot is to contrast Clinton's "ready on day one" experience with the alleged dearth of experience that the Illinois Senator would bring to the table.
During an appearance this morning at a veterans event in Houston, Obama responded to the Clinton ad. "We've seen these ads before," said Obama, according to the Post's Shailagh Murray. "They're the kind that play on peoples' fears to scare up votes."
On a conference call this morning, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe dismissed the ad as a "shop-worn tactic" and struck back at Clinton in harsh tones. "Senator Clinton has already had her red-phone moment," he said, noting that not only had Clinton voted for the 2002 use-of-force resolution against Iraq but that she also "did not read the National Intelligence Estimate so she didn't do her homework either."
As Obama has done throughout the campaign, Plouffe sought to draw a contrast between Clinton's experience and his candidate's judgment. "This is about what you say when you answer that phone, what kind of judgment you demonstrate," said Plouffe.
In a hastily-organized conference call, Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), retired Gen. Tony McPeak, and former U.S. Navy Secretary Richard Danzig defended Obama from the idea that he lacks the experience to respond effectively to a national or international crisis.
"The question is not whether you can wake up at 3 a.m. and answer the phone," said McPeak. "That's pretty easy."
Durbin echoed that sentiment, noting that handling these sorts of crises is more about judgment than experience. "It isn't a matter of just who is picking up the phone," said Durbin. "It's about getting the right answer."
Mark Penn, chief strategist for the Clinton campaign, insisted in a noon conference call, that the "3 a.m." ad was "positive" and designed to remind voters of the stakes in next Tuesday's voting. The ad is a "positive argument about Senator Clinton having the strength, experience and wisdom" to effectively handle an unforeseen international crisis, explained Penn.
"This ad speaks to what people very much know in their heart," Penn added. "When picking a president, this is a very important qualification."
The efficacy of the ad likely lies in the eye of the beholder.
For a Clinton supporter, the ad effectively frames the stakes in next week's votes and the broader fight for the Democratic nomination. Clinton, the campaign argues, is the only candidate running on the Democratic side who has the resume to be ready to handle an international crisis on her first day in office and, as importantly, stand up to Republican attacks on her national security credentials during the campaign this fall.
From an Obama perspective, this ad is rank fear-mongering in the vein of what President George W. Bush did during the 2004 campaign against Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.). Clinton is trying to convince people to vote their fears, not their hopes, goes the Obama argument. Plouffe compared the ad to tactics the Clinton campaign used in advance of the Iowa caucuses in which she placed third. "A lot of their tactics and arguments have been rejected by voters," said Plouffe.
What we don't know is how much of an imprint the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 continue to have on the psyche of the American public. In the 2006 election, Republicans saw their advantages over Democrats on national security issues erode -- the likely result of the ongoing public discontent with the war in Iraq.
But, in a Democratic primary it's tough to analyze how an ad like this one, which directly invokes the possibility of a future crisis, will play. Will it force undecided Democrats to take a hard look at which of the two candidates they want sitting in the White House? And, will that second look accrue to Clinton's benefit? Or will Democratic voters see the ad as in line more with Republican tactics that they want to move past and respond by siding with Obama?
In five days we should have a much better sense of things, but make no mistake: this ad is a gamble for Clinton. If it works, her campaign strategists will look like geniuses; if it doesn't it could well mark the beginning of the end.

The below link will take you to my two cents concerning the ad and indeed the whole Clinton approach to this thing. It is too long to post here but I thought it might ask some questions that provoke critical thinking on the part of my fellow citizens.

Typical Clinton's, as usual, not doing her homework and perhaps she'll, when tenses rise high, just within the first ten seconds during a red-phone call, force a nuclear war (I'm exaggerating somewhat), wile after the moment of no return, she'll become aware, that the alarm call concerns a melt down of nuclear plants at Indian Point.
She was also too fast earlier, voting for war, thinking that the use of military forces against Iraq related to more diplomatic force on Sadam Hussein.
In another instance she voted "yes" in the senate, too late hoping that the law wouldn't pass.
Why she will not distinguish diplomacy from military?
Some people think politics and governmental measures are just the proceeding of war with other tools as though deserve to come later in mind. But war is something else as diplomacy and the very latest to consider. No shoot first and ask later!
Let's hope she is not planning to move the hottest red button to her presidential dorm room near the clock radio.
If she plays the fear card, fear for Hillary as your next president and vote smart for the reliable hardworking and top-talented Obama.
Pointer, watching you from the Netherlands

And your point is?? proximity??
The facts: our legislature meets for 90 days every two years. That's too much. We have over a 4 billion (yep with a b) surplus in the state treasury. We have the 15th largest economy in the world.
Quote: " The economy of Texas is a dominant force in the economy of the United States. One of the largest growing economies in the nation, Texas is, as of 2006, home to six of the top 50 companies on the Fortune 500 list and 56 overall, more than any other state.
[1] Texas has an economy that is the second largest in the nation and the 15th largest in the world based on GDP (PPP) figures. As the largest exporter of goods in the United States, Texas currently grosses more than 100 billion dollars a year in trade with other nations.""
Just the facts again.
A little jealousy here, proximity??
We must be doing something right.

A 3:00 A.M. phone call...ha. The only 3:00 a.m. call Hillary has ever taken for tradegy is to say "Bill, it's for you." She has absolutely no experience in managing crisis. Her idea of crisis is "my husband is cheating on me!" What a joke! McCain, on the other hand, has had to face a split decision as a Lt. in battle. Where his life & the lives of others were at stake, he has experience in dealing with his pressured situations.
As for Obama, he has even less experience than Hillary at this. Which, I know his big claim is that he has good judgement. Obama also claims he wants to put partisan politics behind us and get things done on the issues. Well, Obama's rhetoric doesn't match his record. Obama's record is one of a total liberal who hasn't been part of any bi-partisan compromises. McCain, on the other hand, has all kind of scars b/c he has been attacked on the right & left for compromising to get things done. 3 examples you ask?
1. The McCain/Feingold Finance Reform Bill. He went into connection with Russ Feingold, one of the more liberal senators in the US, to form a compromise he felt was good for America and tough on lobbyists and pork-barrell politicians on both sides of the isle.
2. Immigration Reform: He went against the Republican base of "Round em up, send em back" & the liberal base of "we don't really need borders" to try & seal the borders while forming a fair & more efficient way for legal immigration. This took guts by a man who wants to do what's right for America despite the objections of radicals from both sides of the isle.
3. Gang of 14 compromise. President Bush's judicial nominee's were being held up by Democrats & Bill Frist & Republican leaders were threatening to vote to end the filabuster. So John McCain & traditional Republicans & Democrats came together with a compromise. Democrats said they would vote to bring up a vote on Bush's judical nominees unless there were extrodinary circumstances involved with the nominee. In exchange, the 7 Republicans involved would not vote for Republicans right to remove the filabuster and would preserve that right for Democrats in the case of extrodinary circumstances surrounding a nominee. This compromise was scoffed by the radical right & left of this nation.
Obama or Clinton was involved in no such compromises to my knowledge. If you look at records during Obama's speeches, you would really think you were hearing John McCain talk about non-partisanship & standing on principles, not Obama. So, would someone like to tell me where Obama's rhetoric starts matching his record? Futhurmore, what experience does Clinton really have in a split decision tradegy?

citing my post, where I wrote,
"The current so-called president, Bush, is someone who, before becoming Texas governor and leaving a stinking mess in that state when he went to Washington in 2001, was known best for being a spectacular serial failure."
wly34 replied,
"Much as I would like to agree with you, Bush did not leave Texas in a "stinking mess". In fact we're doing great then and now. If you are basing his experience on the Governorship of Texas, forget it. Texas has the weakest governor's office in the USA. He can only try to lead, then get out of the way. A few pardons and that's it. Very little power to do anything. That's the way Texans like it. We want the government out of our business."

Yep. You [Texans] (some of you, that is) say you "want the government 'out of our business'.
And what that really means, of course, is that you want powerful corporate interests to be unhindered in their no-holds-barred pursuit of profits and the expense of everything else of importance.
Here's an example of what such blindness gets Texans, all of them, from the wisest to the most foolish,
exhibit #1
from:
"Review of 10 Toxic Air Emissions Finds 'Startlingly' Bad Data Reaching Public ..."
link: http://www.commondreams.org/news2004/0622-14.htm
WASHINGTON - June 22, 2004 -
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state governments appear to be underreporting refinery and chemical plant toxic air emissions -- including known carcinogens benzene and butadiene -- on the "startling magnitude" of at least 330 million pounds per year, according to a new study released today by the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) and Galveston Houston- Association for Smog Prevention (GHASP). The study is being released ahead of EPA's release of the 2002 Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), expected to come out this week.
"KEY STUDY FINDINGS
Entitled "Who's Counting: The Systematic Underreporting of Toxic Air Emissions," the EIP-GHASP report finds:
* State pollution rankings change dramatically. Applying the Texas formula nationwide results in states with chemical plants and refineries climbing up the EPA's list of states with the most air pollution. The following six states underwent the largest percentage adjustments in the report, in terms of pounds of adjusted pollution:
Texas 159.6 million pounds (155 percent);
New Mexico 1 million pounds (100 percent);
Louisiana 56 million pounds (74 percent);
Oklahoma 7.1 million pounds (41 percent);
Iowa 8.7 million pounds (36 percent);
and Illinois 17.5 million pounds (30 percent). The adjusted data also reveal at least 5 million pounds of unreported emissions in Kentucky, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Texas moved from third to first place in the overall TRI rankings,
with Louisiana jumping from ninth place to second. The report notes that further studies are needed to document the extent of underreporting for chemicals beyond the ten included in the EIP/GHASP report. Factoring in the underreporting of additional chemicals would likely further shift the state rankings.
* Major jump in carcinogens seen. The adjusted data show an increase of 432 percent for butadiene (a major carcinogen), 417 percent for ethylene, and 440 percent for propylene. According to polluter data reported to the 2001 TRI, nearly six million pounds of benzene, another known carcinogen, were released into the nation's air. The adjusted data show this number to be more than 20 million. Both benzene and butadiene are associated with cancers including leukemia. All 10 pollutants are also associated with the risk of one or more non-cancer chronic diseases, especially respiratory and developmental diseases."
That's only one example. Want others? Remember a firm named "Enron"? It was a Houston-based firm, as I recall, and one of those of which the Texas business community were so, so proud. Enron, too, was largely left unhindered to do its will as Kenneth Lay and his likes determined it.
The examples of the messes caused when 'the government' (which for some time now has itself been a big-business-owned creature rather than the instrument of the people's democratic interests) is made to "stay out of our business" just go on and on and on.
How do you like the Haliburton/Blackwater-run war as that has been conducted for the past five years?
Yeah, this is the world brought to you by "corporations know best"-thinking.
Texas leads or is near the top in the nation as an environmental disaster area; and that, too, is because that's the reflection of what Texas corporate interests have determined _they_ want---for themselves. Nevermind what the people of Texas may want and need in clean air and water.

I guess it's ok to use someone's speach and anothers commercial ad NOW. I didn't feel scared by Hillary's ad but I was scared by obama's. He appears millitant. I guess he thinks he can do anything he wants. I used to find him intersting not anymore. I think he starting to show his true colors.

The hole debate is tiering actually.
It's not going anywhere else!
The Video's turn out to be just like every other argument Clinton makes. Obama denounces Farrakan, Clinton says she Rejects!
I cant say for everyone, but Denouncing seems to be a bit more complete than rejecting.

It's 3 A.M. and a phone is ringing in the Whitehouse... DANGER is LURKING SOMEWHERE! This is pulp fiction and Hillary Clinton is possibly the last person outside of John McCain that I want coming up on the big screen answering the call.
This is the exact kind of theatric fear-mongering that led her to vote for the George W. Bush war in Iraq.
She is Them.
Barack Obama is not.

Auto insurance is mandatory in Texas and most states, yet many drivers in Texas do not have it. Just because Hillary mandate health insurance does not mean everyone will partake. Robert Reich, former labor secretary for Bill Clinton, studied both Senator Obama & Hillary plan - he concluded that Senator Obama's health-care plan will cover more people.
Senator Hillary Clinton is really the one with all speeches and no results. She claims that she has been fighting for poor people for 35 years. According to U.S. Census bureau, Arkansas state ranked 49th in people with college degree (almost dead-last) and 6th in people living below poverty level. The truth is: technology boom did far more for the good economy of the 90's than Bill Clinton. For example, Mark Cuban became a billionaire within 4 years! Billary have nothing to do with it.
If Billary cannot lift a small state like Arkansas out of poverty, how can they do it in Ohio and Texas?
Bill and Hillary need to come up with a different line of attack apart from experience. Obama actually have more total legislative experience (Illinois and Washington) than Hillary. Billary have talked about experience so much, you will think Senator Obama just graduated from college in 2007 instead of 20 years ago.
CNN (aka Clinton News Network) and other media outlets covered plagiarism charge made by the Clintons at least 100 times more than when Hillary humiliated herself by shop lifting words from Bill Clinton and John Edwards on the same night.
CNN covers Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton campaign at least twice as much as they cover Barack and Michelle Obama.
Same CNN and other media outlets drank the Clinton Kool-aid causing them to believe that the media favor Obama over Clinton. Go figure!!

"I live in San Antonio and well aware of the process. And yes I voted for Hillary . That is why I am confident my numbers will hold up since I am RIGHT HERE. Remember early voting started TWO WEEKS AGO. Look up any poll for Texas around then adn you'll get clearer picture of what I mean. And if you read any account of early voting here in Texas, you'd see that everyone agrees it benefits Hillary. Just the facts, sir."
Just the facts. Hilarious. Who cares about any two week old polls (by the way, they weren't good for Hillary either). We are interested in today's polls, and they aren't good for Hillary. How the heck do you think early voting helps Hillary. I voted early and for Obama in Texas as most that I know did. We are not talking about early voting here but the complicated Democratic election process in Texas. By the way, which doesn't apply to Republicans. Here are the Demo rules in Texas:
Texas has 228 Democratic delegates and 140 Republican delegates in the presidential nomination races. They are awarded through Tuesday's primary voting, caucuses and other ways. Here's how it works:
___
DEMOCRATS
A total of 126 pledged delegates are awarded proportionately based on primary voting in 31 state senatorial districts. Each senate district's delegate count is based on Democratic turnout there in the 2004 and 2006 general elections, so not every district has an equal number. The number of district delegates ranges from two to eight; about half have four.
Forty-two at-large pledged delegates are awarded based on caucuses beginning with precinct conventions on election night.
Using a math formula, delegates are awarded at the caucus according to a candidate's share of supporters present. Those supporters may be selected to later attend county or senatorial district conventions and possibly the state convention in June.
At each level, the candidate with more supporters in attendance benefits most.
Twenty-five pledged party and elected official delegates are named at the state convention, based on the percentage of presidential candidate support indicated when convention-goers sign in at the start of the meeting.
There are 35 unpledged delegates: 32 so-called superdelegates, including members of Congress and leading party officials, and three others the state chairman appoints."
So the election depends on delegates awarded according to the results of 2004 and 2006. Clinton could even take the popular vote and not get the delegates.
Hey, the Democrats set it up, agreed on it, and back it. Now it may come back to bite them.

Hillary's tired ad traces its roots to the Johnson administration, and was made by Roy Spence, who made a similar ad over 20 years ago for Mondale. It also "borrows" heavily from an ad a McCain supporter created. But Hillary has no executive experience of her own that justifies this kind of ad. See the McCain ad and both of Obama's response ads here: http://roadkillrefugee.wordpress.com/2008/02/29/new-hillary-campaign-ad-reflects-her-unpresidential-temperament/

What is this Hillary's big mouth blowing that she is the supremo of America and the world too. Whilst in the White House endowed with the worldly resourses, she had no surveillance over what Billy was doing with Monica in the Oval parlour.
At the very least, if she is the smartest lady which she claimed to be, her instinct would have told what Billy was up to. After all, the affair was not happening in Obama's backyard.

What exactly are the national security crisis management credentials that Senator Clinton believes she posesses and Senator Obama does not? Clinton never served in the armed forces. She never had a security clearance during the White House years or sat on the National Security Council. Her own campaign couldn't point to one example where she had been tested by such a crisis. This ad simply has no credibility.
Posted by: bprittenhouse | March 1, 2008 1:40 PM
from the story text above, there's this from Clinton chief strategist, Mark Penn,
"The ad is a "positive argument about Senator Clinton having the strength, experience and wisdom" to effectively handle an unforeseen international crisis, explained Penn."
"This ad speaks to what people very much know in their heart," Penn added. "When picking a president, this is a very important qualification [i.e. 'having the strength, experience and wisdom" to effectively handle an unforeseen international crisis'] ."
Really? Well where were all those people when G.W. Bush finagled two shady so-called 'elections'?, I wonder.
The current so-called president, Bush, is someone who, before becoming Texas governor and leaving a stinking mess in that state when he went to Washington in 2001, was known best for being a spectacular serial failure.
And that is the man Americans in 2000 decided was best to lead the nation---and we're to believe that all along they had in their minds the view that Penn describes above?: that 'having the strength, experience and wisdom" to effectively handle an unforeseen international crisis' is "a very important qualification" for the office of president of the (dis)United States?
Penn's view and his strategy remind me of another bunch of folks who, when making a decision, stick to it regardless of reality coming back and smacking them in the teeth with glaring real-world evidence of the decision's having been a poor one--or perhaps "poor" is putting it too mildly. Anyway, that crowd just 'stays the course'. Even if it becomes painfully clear that it's a disaster course. They stay on it, BLINDLY making the same errors over and over again.
Remind you of anyone?

your suggestion that my post quoted from Fact Check that Senator Clinton has sponsored more bipartisan legislation and had the more responsible position on the bankruptcy bill is somehome sad, cruel and posting a lie. Personally I take afront to that as both sides generally agree that FactCheck is nonpartisan. So now it is cruel to point out the innacuracies of your opponents votes and position. Actually that in itself is sad, don't you dare post a factual position we don't agree with.
Incidentally, the Houston Chronicle this morning announced that Hillary Clinton runs ahead of B.O. in a matchup against John McCain in Harris County Texas, which includes Houston Texas, America's 4th largest city.

Some of the comments are not only appalling - sad reflection on those who post such comments - and are not worthy of response of any kind. No decent person would wish to be callous, cruel and be prepared to post lies and more damned lies about a decent candidate and human being - Senator Obama. I salute and admire millions of good, decent and God-fearing American people - I am a foreigner - but I do hope that in this 21st century world all of us can have a dialogue - even with our enemies - to resolve our differences and bring about peace and harmony. It appears to me the Democrats are self-destructing and that is a shame. I wish both Democratic candidates well on Tuesday although I am saddened and disappointed with Senator Clinton - expected a lot more civilised camapigning from her and her team. Ah, well, power at any cost, isn't that the goal?

mistype;what I was saying was that the credit card companes did not want to see a cap on credit card interest rates, the same poition that Senator Obama took on the Bankruptcy Bill.

Check Fact check on the Banktuptcy Bill. Hillary voted for Sen Dayton's CAP on ceiling on credit card interest rates, becaue that was exactly the position the credit card companies wanted, to push millions more into bankruptcy. Obama opposed any ceiling I guess 50% would be OK with your crowd and the credit card companies.
As to who actually reached across party lines for healthFact Check: Hillary Works With Republicans More Frequently Than Sen. Obama
2/29/2008 10:32:20 AM
Yesterday, Sen. Obama suggested he's more willing to work with Republicans than Hillary:
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Thursday he would be more willing than Hillary Rodham Clinton to work with Republicans.
''Her natural inclination is to draw a picture of Republicans as people who need to be crushed and defeated,'' Obama said during a telephone interview from Texas with the Cincinnati Enquirer editorial board. ''It's not entirely her fault. She's been the target of some unfair attacks in the past.''
''I'm not a person who believes any one party has a monopoly on wisdom,'' Obama said.
The facts show opposite is true. In the three years that Sen. Obama has been in the Senate, Hillary has sponsored 53 bills that have attracted Republican co-sponsors. Over the same period of time, Sen. Obama has sponsored just 24 bills that have attracted Republican co-sponsors.

Many of our past presidents were governors of states and had no direct experience in making or shaping foreign policy. Even U.S. Senators have limited experience in shaping U.S. foreign policy because of the extension of the imperial presidency as described by Arthur Schlesinger (in his book "The Imperial Presidency") and Marcus Raskin (in his book "Notes on the Old System"). So members of Congress are cut off from decision making power by presidential power plays and the concentrated power of the Pentagon and the military industrial complex described by President Eisenhower (who had lots of "experience").
Some of those who get "experience" gain it by fear campaigns that help elect them to office. So the necessary precondition of their being in the position to get the experience is a fear campaign, i.e. that is the necessary condition in the formula of power.
As should be obvious to everyone who has run for president, a president who picks sensible advisors has a better chance of making good judments. An exception was during the Cuban Missile Crisis when the Kennedy's may or may not have deliberated or side stepped their advisors and group think depending on which history you want to believe in. It does not help that during that crisis the U.S. was vastly superior to the Russians in nuclear missiles and did not need to base its missiles in Turkey to provoke the Soviets as historians have argued and acknowledged.
The Soviet Union fell apart because it spent too many resources on military weapons systems according to various analysts, e.g. Manuel Castells and Seymour Melman. The U.S. also faces severe economic problems because of its overdose of military spending. This and not gratuitous debates about future crises should be a central theme in the campaign, not how many generals and admirals one knows.

Ok what is going to happen with this election is that no democrat is going to win...I am a democrat and would love to have a democrat president in but the reality is..Obama people wont vote for Hillary if she is nominated..and Hillary voters wont vote for Obama..so either McCain wins...or Nader gets the votes which are useless. I believe Hillary Clinton is taking down the democratic party with the superdelegate issue...the texas caucus issue...and the florida michigan delegate issue. If she cant win without doing this...then she doesnt care if she takes the democratic party with her. So I hope all you Hillary fans will like a republican president again...

Obama should have an add that morphs Hillary to Rove as she is the first Democratic candidate to steal a page from his national security book for the presidential primaries and election. So can we assume that a second Clinton presidency would continue the low ball politics that the Republicans majored in. After all that feigned anger at Obama in the debate we realize she is Rove.

Barrack Hussein Obama will not win in the general election because his support is soft. He can not win in SC/GA/AL/LA as he did in Dem primary. He is a "liberal" and his dealing with "Arab" money men (Rezko, etc) will do him in. If you want a Dem to win in 08 HIllary's "your girl"

THE NEW ANTI-SEMITISM
Throughout these blogs are assertions that Barack Obama should not be president because he is secretly a Muslim.
Why does the New York Times allow such posts?
If the same post asserted that he should not be elected because he was a secretly a Jew....would these posts be allowed?
I suspect not (and rightfully so).
What is the difference?
It's the same Nazi philosophy; only the religion has been changed.

Neither one of these frauds, nor the Democratic Party in general, can be entrusted with the security of this nation. For the past four years, they both have been part of a shameless, unrelenting effort to force a premature withdrawl from Iraq just in order to see George Bush humiliated, utterly oblivious to the disasterous humanitarian and foreign policy consequences of such a precipitous unilateral withdrawl.
John McCain is the clear choice in November.
Posted by: danram | March 1, 2008 12:53 AM
Hillary was told by Colin Powell, the miltary, the CIA, and all the other intelligent agencies that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, chemical weapons, and that they were a threat to national security (the oil nations of the region). Any person who heard this information from credible people would have to vote to "protect" the national interest of the US. Anyone who tells me that they would have voted otherwise is a living in a "fairytail".
Obama are you listening now. A leader make decisions based on all the available information at the time. ONLY TRUE LEADERS MAKE THOSES DECISIONS NO MATTER THE CONSEQUENCES!!
Vote Hillary 08 "She will fight for you".

so you can see folks neither the Obama nauts or the repulsive scammers
can actually carry on a conversation about what
they should know.
To them it's all about teams, not teams in the context of world events but teams that pay them to obfuscate lie cheat and steal
Zalmay Khalilzad, and Hamid Karzai
who are they?
former employees of Unocal.
who is Unocal, nowdays they are Chevron.
Zalmay Khalilzad is now the United States Ambassador to the UN....what does that say to the world???? Apparently, if they [ the United States People ] even knew who he was which they don't that the people don't care what the world thinks that they want to steal IRAQ's OIL...because that is what he Zalmay Khalilzad represents to the world
and Hamid Karzai, he's the appointed president to Afghanistan, HEROIN PRODUCING CAPITOL OF THE WORLD....a drug state, as well as the home of the TransAfghanistan Pipeline, that is supposed to be worth $13 TRILLION DOLLARS...
but all you Obamanauts knew that right and his leadershipness Barack Obama
could speak off of the cuff about it couldn't he?????
quiz him Hillary.
quiz him.

January 13, 2001 - The appointment by the Bush Administration of Zalmay Khalilzad as special envoy to Afghanistan which was announced on December 31, 2001, only nine days after the U.S.-backed interim government of Hamid Karzai took office in Kabul, seems timely and logical. Khalilzad, a U.S. citizen born in Afghanistan with extensive knowledge of the region and experience, appears to be the right person for the job.
Khalilzad's presence, however, is the fruit of an older agenda, one that reaches back at least to the Reagan era, and Khalilzad has more connections to that agenda than meets the eye.
Simply put, Khalilzad's appointment means oil. Oil for the United States. Oil for Unocal, a U.S. company long criticized for doing business in countries with repressive governments and rumored to have close ties to the Department of State and the intelligence community.
Zalmay Khalilzad was an advisor for Unocal. In the mid 1990s, while working for the Cambridge Energy Research Associates, Khalilzad conducted risk analyses for Unocal at the time it had signed letters of approval from the Taliban. The analyses were for a proposed 890-mile, $2-billion, 1.9-billion-cubic-feet-per-day natural gas pipeline project which would have extended from Turkmenistan to Pakistan. In December 1997, Khalilzad joined Unocal officials at a reception for an invited Taliban delegation to Texas.
UNOCAL LONG CRITICIZED FOR BUSINESS PRACTICES
Unocal, the world's ninth largest oil company according to the National Center for Policy Research, but according to the Los Angeles Times, smaller than America's "most powerful energy companies," has long been criticized for doing business with repressive foreign governments. Legal action was brought against Unocal in 1997 by Burmese refugees for human rights abuses which the refugees claimed were committed by the Burmese military hired by Unocal to protect their operations.
Unocal has also been criticized for its business dealings in this country. A 1998 petition signed by Environmental, Human Rights and Women's Groups, asked California Attorney General to revoke Unocal's Charter, citing Unocal's record as a "repeat offender" of environmental, labor and deceptive practices laws. The petition claimed that Unocal was principally responsible for the notorious 1969 oil blowout in the Santa Barbara Channel and has since then polluted multiple sites from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Petitioners claimed that Unocal committed hundreds of violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, treated U.S. workers unethically and unfairly, engaged in a pattern of illegal deceptions of the courts, stockholders and the public, and "usurped political power," undermining U.S. foreign policy.

It's a simple decision.
If the War Party is for a candidate, and they are for Hillary, then I'm against it.
The WAR PARTY is committed to isolate America into their corner. That is why every other day we pick on Russia or China.
They thrive on conflict. VOTE FOR OBAMA!

it's like listening to an argument between your two favorite college professors while gilligan is at the helm. either one of them will be infinitely better than what we have now.
mukasey refuses to refer bolton and meiers to a grand jury today, simply on the ground that they were acting at the direction of the president. again we've become a nation of man not laws.
re the allegation the dems are looking for political points here, they should have scored those points by refusing to confirm mukasey, what a sad joke he's been, refusing to challenge bush's torture policies, and now ignoring the law.

I expect a Senator like Clinton to have read the National Intelligence Estimate before she would authorize a President to go to war in which young Americans would kill and be killed. SHE DID NOT! She authorized a decision to go to war without reading critical documents associated with such a major decision. Such an action is not leadership but incompetence similar to the manner she managed her campaign to date!!! It`s time for Clinton to show her tax returns - `nuff said. A politician that doesn`t release her tax returns is one that cannot be trusted. Obama has released his but Clinton has not released hers! Clinton must also answer why she was so quick to authorize Bush`s war in Iraq where thousands of Americans died and tens of thousands were grieviously wounded while Clinton`s own daughter, Chelsea sits looking pretty on the campaign trail without doing an iota of military service just like Bush`s daughters, Barbara and Jenna. Afro-American, Hispanics and American families of lower incomes demand an answer from Clinton as to why their kids are serving and dying in Iraq in disproportionate numbers while Chelsea Clinton mints money hand over fist as an investor ($200,000 dollars plus this year alone), and then has the luxury to stump for mama san on the campaign trail.
Speaking of that 3:00 am telephone call, Hilary was answering the phone late at night to tell Chelsea to not stay out so late partying, heh,heh,heh...

If the call was from our Intel report of that Al Quida activity after we pull out of Iraq, I expect our president would not say "... send troop back in..."
If the call was to ask our president to meet with Iran leader, I expect our president would not say "... yes ..."
Apparent to me, Obama is not the right one on that phone.

It`s 3:00 am, and children are sleeping peacefully, and the phone rings. Hilary answers it with her normal smug look. She says "Hello". There is silence. Hilary looks confused, then repeats once more "Hello, who's there?" Softly, a voice says "It's me". Hilary then asks "Who is me?". The soft voice says "It's me, Monica". Then all hell breaks looose in America!
Fadeout: Hello, I am Monica Lewinsky and I approve this message, heh,heh,heh.....

Did Senator McCain pay half the cost of Senators Clinton's ad? Bet he did...if McCain's picture was shown at the end of the ad instead of Hillary's picture, how would anyone know who made the ad?
We realize most everyone who posts here has made up their mind which candidate will get their vote.
If you are a Senator Clinton supporter, we would like to ask you has she really made her case on qualifications? Or, are you supporting her just because she is a well-known ex-First Lady who became a Senator?
Senator Clinton always references a couple of trips to Iraq and Afghanistan when answering the questions about her qualifications for Commander and Chief. If these trips are that which her qualifies her as Commander and Chief, the truth is her experience with the military is less than Bob Hope, the comedian who made 100's of trips to the front lines to entertain the troops. The other truth is when her husband was president he closed military bases and gutted America's intelligence agencies. You should remember. Bad judgment there as well.
From what we have seen, Senator Clinton hasn't made her case for being qualified for anything other than a repeat preformance as First Lady. Her senate experience has been less that stellar. She supported the incursion into Iraq and the 29% interest rates. Not much in between.
But our real gripe is: Where are the 11,000 pages of White House records that supposedly substantiate her qualifications to answer the red phone spoke of in the ad? Where are her tax returns?
And where is the press? They are giving Senator Clinton free pass in producing the tax records and White House records. They are also reporting how hard they are on her - asking questions first and all. What a joke...what a mixed-up, convoluted set of falsehoods.
Both the press and Clinton are insulting the electorate.
That's why my wife and I are in Obama's camp.

I am a registered Independent. This entire discussion--yes I slowly scrolled through all of it--serves a superb microcosm of the Sheer Insanity of political discourse in the United States. There were perhaps fifty thoughtful posts in the entire thing. Most of the remainder were sheer hysteria. Some were hysterically funny, though unintentionally so.
I suggest that the incensed Obama supporters re-evaluate the Clinton ad and view it as something of practical beneficial to Obama's candidacy. It helps Obama get some practice and toughening before the general election. Clinton's ad is extremely pale stuff compared to the squalid and vicious barrage the Republicans will use. Obama needs to work-out on Clinton's heavy bag so that he can get into top shape and top form for the low-blows and cheap-shots of Republican gutter politics. The 3 AM ad is pretty mild compared to filthy GOP sewage that awaits him in the general election.
There's no need to demonize Clinton. (I despise her and will never vote for her, but I don't demonize her.) She's doing Obama a service now. Stay positive and stay focused on the real enemy.

I agree that much of the discussion so called is drivel. William F. Buckley we all are not.
An interesting take on this, though, that perhaps Hillary falls upon her sword, sacrifices all, so that BO can go on for the greater good in November.
I will vote Dem. regardless of the outcome of the primary.
There is such a profound difference in policy between Rep. and Dem. that to say I will vote for McCain if HRC/BO gets the nod is simply stupefying. McCain is not playing bridge, he is playing crazy-8s.

Hillary has the gall to call a plagarist on being
"the agent of change," when he's actually the agent of borrowing....slogans
he's the punchline guy.
scholars are okay in interviews and not so good at completion....empirical experience is more important in real world jobs...
having done something before, not read or heard about it from someone else....ever done customer support and carried a pager for a FINANCIAL SYSTEM that is running 800 BILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF TRANSACTIONS A YEAR....response in a timely manner with the right decision is important
but Obama,
He'll worry about whether he can do the job when he gets it.
And listen folks, Hillary has already had that 3:00 A.M. call
and been there with Bill to work through it with him....not hearing about it second hand.
Is that so hard for you to say?
Or is making upbushiestuffallyoudoalldaylong anywayz
love to hear from an intelligent person.
comeon you can take me down?
hah hah hah.........
you'd have to reach up to touch my ankels little biters...

I tell you - I'm pretty discouraged. They say Hillary does best among the uneducated and the over 50 women - and racists. And now she's picked up Rush Limbaugh, Bill Cunningham, and Ann Coulter as staunch supporters. Quite the winning combination!
After reading an article about Ohio - (which was heartbreaking to hear about all the plants which have left the state) and the open racism - which isn't being reported on - but I'm sure is going to rear its ugly head in Mississippi as well, I am very discouraged. And I know there are pockets of it down in Texas - not everywhere of course.
Essentially, the press has given Hillary free attack ads by repeating her rants every half hour - and multiple times within some broadcasts - all in the name of "discussing the news". And though people say they hate the ads, they're effective, and I think the Clinton campaign is savvy enough to know that the ugliest things they can say will be sure to be repeated for a couple days. The spin next week will be "Clinton comeback", then "Clinton momentum", then...
Truth is the first casualty in a Clinton administration.
I pray that Obama will not take any offer by Hillary to be a VP. He'll end up being used to get her in, and to be the fundraiser in chief (she'll use him as the man with the golden tongue), but he won't be given any significant role because the egos of Bill and Hillary certainly wouldn't allow that. And by the time her 8 years is up, he'll be so covered in mud, no one will ever trust him again and his career will be over - somewhat like Al Gore's - without global warming.

The dreaded 3 a.m. phone call:
1. (ring-ring-ring)
-- [groan] Uh, hello?
-- Madame President, we have a situation here.
-- Huh, wha...do you have any idea what time it...Wait, is this another Vast Conspiracy heckler?
-- This is Secretary Penn, ma'am, and it's urgent.
-- What is it, Mark? Surge No. 3 isn't working?
-- No, ma'am. Well, I mean, yes, the surge *isn't* working, of course, but I wouldn't call you about that at 3 a.m., now would I?
-- Good point. So what's the...wait a minute, where's Bill? He's not here...and the pillow's not even warm! Hey, don't tell me...
-- Um, do you remember that photo op the El Paso people set up last March, with the Miss West Texas Junior Cactus Carnival contestants? Well, it turns out...
-- Kee-RIPES , didn't I WARN you people about these things?!? #@$& $%# *&%#...
-- [18 min. gap]
-- ...so don't call me again until the DNA results are in, OK? [muttering] When that no-good zipper-quick "photo op" hound gets back here, I'll show him what Ready on Day One means, all right...

Face it, the Clinton's are getting "Out-Clintoned" at every turn by Obama. He has a campaign team that effectively keeps track and immediately responds to every issue raised by the opposition. And it does so with great creativity overlaying a sound rationale that in effect uses the opposition's own message against its own messenger.
You can not do any better than this and it just underscores why Obama has risen rapidly to this level of success and why his momentum is still increasing on a daily basis.

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Michael Mukasey refused Friday to refer the House's contempt citations against two of President Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury. Mukasey said White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former presidential counsel Harriet Miers committed no crime.

As promised, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she has given the Judiciary Committee authority to file a lawsuit against Bolten and Miers in federal court.
"The House shall do so promptly," she said in a statement.

Hillary,
That 3am call is for you. It's America asking you to put us out of our misery.
Please don't drag the Democratic party down with your campaign.
I for one am sure the Republicans would be happy to have you. You are a natural fit.

leichtman - You want to use Gergen's hearsay as a rejoinder to Hillary's support for NAFTA. But that hearsay is suspect: "Some former White House staffers and recent biographers insist she privately resisted. Earlier accounts, however, said she'd argued not against the deal itself but against pushing it ahead of her health-insurance plan."

The rest of us can use Hillary's own words. And she said it loud and clear:
In 1996, when the pact was three years old, she said the trade deal with Mexico and Canada was giving U.S. workers a chance to compete. "That's what a free and fair trade agreement like NAFTA is all about," she said. "I think NAFTA is proving its worth."

When is someone in the media going to call Hillary on her ridiculous claim to "know world leaders". None of the important leaders who were in power when she was first lady are still in office.
A quick survey of the G8 nations will show that only Vladimir Putin, who overlapped with Clinton by a few months, is still in office, and he steps down in a few weeks. More to the point, he'll be replaced by Dmitri Medvedev, a man Hillary just referred to as "Med... Med .... Dev ... whatever".
Hillary doesn't know any world leaders. Many years ago she was briefly introduced to some now-retired former leaders. She can't be bothered to learn the name of the next president of the world's other great nuclear-weapons power. Just like she couldn't be bothered to read the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate before voting for war.
Please ... keep her away from that telephone!!
Posted by: tomscanlon | February 29, 2008 11:26 PM
Wait. I'm confused about this add. Does Clinton assume that people want HER to take that call rather than Obama? Nobody wants that, right?
Posted by: coupland12 | February 29, 2008 11:25 PM
Here's an alternative scenario: It's three in the morning when Obama hears the RED phone ring. Obama turns to Michelle and asks for room service!
Posted by: trace-sc | February 29, 2008 11:23 PM
I guess Jay Rockefeller watched Clinton's 3 AM ad and realized who he'd want answering that phone.
Posted by: B2O2 | February 29, 2008 11:23 PM
The 3 AM call comes in and Hillary has to make a decision, so what happens (1) She goes looking for Bill, who must be sleeping somewhere in the Whitehouse (2) When she finds him, he in turn calls a few people from FOX news and the neo-cons to work on alternatives and triangulate, then (3)Then Hillary and Bill make a decision that would make her look "strong on security" for the 2012 re-election campaign,

You say that as if a guy who was a documented alcoholic and reportedly also a casual drug user with a record of failed business ventures who traded Sammy Sosa doesn't currently occupy the White House. Sen. Hillary Clinton has declined to return $170,000 in campaign contributions from individuals at a company accused of widespread sexual harassment, and whose CEO is a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record, federal campaign records show.
The federal government has accused the Illinois management consulting firm, International Profit Associates, or IPA, of a brazen pattern of sexual harassment including "sexual assaults," "degrading anti-female language" and "obscene suggestions."
In a 2001 lawsuit full of lurid details, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims that 103 women employees at IPA were victimized for years.

You Obama supporters have got it all wrong -- this ad is not aimed at him.
It's obvious just from watching it that Hillary has already given up on the Democratic nomination. She's decided to try for the Republican nomination instead.
Shame she can't win that one either -- that's where she clearly belongs on the issues (Iraq, Patriot Act, torture, flag-burning, etc.)
Go Hillary -- and thanks for your loyalty to the legacy of President George Bush.

This just in... Sen. Jay Rockefeller, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, endorses Senator Obama as our next Commander-in-Chief:
http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/02/senate_intellig.html
"As Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, I am all too aware that the threats we face are unconventional. They are sophisticated. They are constantly changing and adapting. And they are very serious," Rockefeller said in a statement issued by the Obama campaign. "What matters most in the Oval Office is sound judgment and decisive action. It's about getting it right on crucial national security questions the first time -- and every time.
"The indisputable fact is Barack Obama was right about Iraq when many of us were wrong," added Rockefeller. "It was a tough call and the single greatest national security question, and mistake, of our time. Today, we remain a country at war, and countless mistakes over the last six-and-a-half years have made us less safe. The stakes have never been higher, and that is why we must take a stand."

Here's the scenario: It's three in the morning when Hillary hears the RED phone ring. Bill is hung over from an night out "with the boys" so, Hillary stands and shakes the sleepiness away. Then she walks to her closet, decides which pants suit to wear and drapes it over the bed. Walking into the bathroom she commences to put her face on. (Another two hours) That done, she walks into the bedroom and puts on the pants suit she has selected. (Another hour) Then she goes to one of her jewelry chests and, taking her time, decides on a strand of pearls. Another glance in the mirror and she decides that the pearls do not go with the pants suit she has on. Back to the jewelry box and this time she selects a gold chain (her latest bling) that she puts around her neck. All ready to go now, she walks into her office to answer the phone. Just as her hand reaches the phone she sees a bright, white light that extends all across the horizon. Hurriedly putting the phone to her ear, she hears a voice say: "now kiss your *** goodbye.

By electing George Bush, americans lowered their standards ... the possibility of Obama being nominated proves that but there is still time to prevent it.
Why don't we give Obama the chance of growing up and become a bright and seasoned politician? The real risk is transforming a good young wine into vinegar.

Well, I'm scared. Congrats, Hillary campaign. It's not quite the "daisy" ad, but it's pretty close. I gotta give credit for putting the question in our heads, but watching the campaign trial I've seen Obama under pressure, and he handles it much more calmly and controlled than Clinton has been.
Thanks for the reminder, though.

Pretty soon, when Barack has become the nominee on the back of connivance and pimping by his media prostitute pals like Rich, Russert, Gerson and Colby, we will be happy witnesses to his being shred to pieces by the Rethug attack machine.
There will be "Barack, call me" videos. There will be rumors about coke, affairs, Muslim faith, crazy pastors, angry spouse, you name it. SOme will be true, some will be intentional misrepresentations, most will be speculative rumormongering, a few outright lies.
Not that it matters. Dems and Rethugs will be calling each other names. McCain will have nasty ads against Obama, may be Omaba will do the same. The few independents who have no clue how this happened will sit out, and any Obama Republicans will go back home.
At that point, all the slimy Obama supporters who have been drinking the Obama koolaid that he will bring us together with the hated Rethugs can figure what happened. Perhaps, some of these Obama supporters can go beg some of those Rethugs if they can hug them, kiss their hand, and be their friend, even if the Rethugs will kick them in the butt.
I can't wait for that day, to see this sickening, character assassination specialist supporters of Obama, just leave my party. If the Democratic party was just half the size, but had some decency not to be calling the only 2-term DEM president since FDR all kinds of nasty names, I will quite happy.

Hallelujah, strike up the band, trot out the fireworks, do a little dance-Hillary's
campaign has finally got it just right with the latest ad. Indeed this is the subject that people actually do worry about in their deepest psyches- who
will be capable and experienced enough to deal with a crisis that will deeply affect the American people. I hope so much that we
will never have to face that(I hope more than believe). I want someone who will act not react. I want someone who has the
cool head, and know how, to call together the best in every field to fix the problem, and keep the best interests of the American people at the center of the decisions. Hillary has shown that she is a listener, and hears what the forgotten American has to say.(Thats all of us) She would never take us into battle, or put our military in harms way without getting the input, not just from congress, but from the American people.
Obama just made the single most egregious error of his hit and run campaign-that is, he decried the Hillary ad, then turned around(now you see me, now you don't) and put out an ad that is almost the same. He not only plagiarizes, he also steals Hillary's ad messages. Doesn't this man have ANY original ideas ?. Of course not.
I do hope the people of Ohio, Vermont,
R. I. and Texas take a really good look, before Tue., at Obama's empty, self -serving rhetoric. He plays the revival preacher to the hilt. He targets those who have a need for an elusive something in their lives-or a need to fill an emptyness or a longing and tries to convince them he can make it all happen. He can't.
