Super Tuesday Prediction Time: Vote Early, Vote Often
What a day!
Twenty-four states hold primaries, caucuses or (in one case) a convention today. On the Democratic side there are contests in 22 states with 1,681 delegates at stake; for Republicans it's 21 states and 1,038 delegates.
Put simply, it is the single-largest primary day in modern political history. And with Sens. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) seriously contesting nearly every state on the Democratic side, and Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) trying to close out former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination, it promises to be a very exciting night.
And you know what that means -- it's time for another round of Fix predictions.
The rules of the game have changed somewhat to account for the HUGE numbers of states voting today. Instead of picking the top three candidates (as we have asked in the past), we want your predictions on which states each of the candidates will win and how many delegates they will wind up with after today's voting. We also want your overarching storyline for the night's festivities.
To qualify, the prediction must account for winners in all 22 states (for Democrats) or 21 states (for Republicans) as well as the 1,681 delegates (for Democrats) and 1,038 delegates (for Republicans). Just list the candidate name, the states he (or she will win) and the total delegates they will pick up today. (Note: We DON'T want the TOTAL delegate count, just where the delegates up for grabs today go.) Don't forget to throw your storyline in there too!
Although the rules have changed, the prize remains the same. Winners will receive an official Fix t-shirt to be worn proudly -- and regularly -- in the winner's home town. The t-shirt will almost certainly improve your social life and boost your IQ several points. Or not.
Predict away!

Hey guys and gals, I know we are all expecting and counting, because we worry about today and tomorrow, but I'm telling you, we should worry about past tomorrow. It seems that Hillary will get away with her wish of sitting Michigan and Florida delegates at the national convention. She won and she will fight for this. I just heard Howard Dean tell Mathews that he cannot decide, that it will be the licencing commitee or something like that that will decide just before the convention if these delegates can be seated. Mathews pressed him saying that if this was autherized it would be as originally decided and that perhaps this would be illegal. Dean said that he could not do anything about it. I feel that he and the rest are sold to Hillary. See, Hillary is fighting this point, because she feels she is loosing that she will need those delegates to win the nomination. Are we going to allow it? What we could do for today and tomorrow it's done, we should start looking ahead.

Obama - 919 delegates

I don't know about state-by-state, blow-by-blow, but here's my storylines:
DEMS
Obama and Hillary come out roughly even with Hillary having a slight edge in delegates. The race continues neck-and-neck through to the Convention.
REPUBS
Romney scores some surprising upsets as many Republicans cannot bring themselves to vote for that Lefty McCain.
McCain is angered by Mitten's surge. In fit of rage, he pummels Romney with his fists on national TV thus finally endearing himself to the conservative base.
After McCain administers this savage beating it's a cakewalk to the Nomination ! ! !

Republicans
McCain wins: Arizona,California,Connecticut,Delaware,
Georgia,Illinois,Minnesota,Missouri,New Jersey,New York,Oklahoma and Tennessee. (599 delegates)
Romney wins: Alaska,Colorado,Massachusets,Montana,North Dakota,Utah and West Virginia. (342 delegates)
Huck wins:
Alabama and Arkansas. (91 delegates)
Democrats
Clinton wins: Arkansas,California,Connecticut,Delaware,
Massachusets,New Jersey,Minnesota,New Mexico,New York,Oklahoma and Tennessee. (915 delegates)
Obama wins: Alabama,Alaska,Arizona,Colorado,Georgia,
Idaho,Illinois,Kansas,Missouri,North Dakota and Utah (755 delegates)
Mike Gravel gets 1 delegate from Alaska, and Ron Paul gets 6 delegates.
Storyline: McCain wins but doesn't get the K.O. win he was probably hoping for. Romney wins several states and comes close in California and several other states, vows to continue bid. Mike Huckabee's dissapointing showing causes him to drop out. Can McCain win against unified opposition?
Clinton surprises many by coming back and winning the majority of delegates, and holding on in CA,CT etc. Obama stays in and the upcoming states seem to favor him.

Clinton (922 delegates): AZ, AR, CA, CT, DE, KS, MA, MO, MN, ND, NM, NY, OK
Obama (738 delegates): AL, AK, CO, GA, ID, IL, NJ, UT, TN
Storyline: Obama shows strength, but early voting carries Clinton to surprisingly large win in California.
McCain (600): CA, CO, CT, DE, GA, IL, MA, MO, MN, MT, NJ, NM, NY, OK
Romney (80): AZ, ID, KS, UT
Huckabee (200): AL, AR, ND, TN, WV

Story: McCain the clear favorite to the nomination, Romney done as he only takes states with large Mormon populations, and Huckabee shows strong among evangelicals, prompting 3rd party run speculation.
Posted by: leuchtman | February 5, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse
Storyline: It's down to a two-man (wait, that's the old politics) two-person race, as Hillary squeeks by Obama in most states, and McCain gets more delegates than Romney and Huckabee combined despite slightly more delegates for Romney in California. Huckabee's strength in South and Obama's in Republican leaning states and youth vote suggest tickets are ready now-let the general election begin.
REPUBLICAN PRIMARY RESULTS
McCain wins: New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arizona, Connecticut, North Dakota and Delaware: Total 590
Romney wins: California (87/83), Alabama, Utah, Montana: Total 228
Huckabee wins: West Virginia (a cheating prediction-results just announced)Tennessee, Arkansas: Total 109
Splits between McCain and Romney: Georgia (27/27-H 18), Tennessee (13-13 H 26)
DEMOCRAT PRIMARY RESULTS
Rodham Clinton wins: California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Arizona, Connecticut, New Mexico: Total 1049
Obama wins: Illinois, Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, Utah, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Idaho: Total 580.
Results do not add to total delegates selected because some not subject to voting selection.
Edwards wins: My mother in law's vote cast four weeks ago before he dropped out.

Clinton: NY, NJ, TN, NM, MN, OK, AR, CA, MA, AS, AZ
Obama: ID, CO, KA, AL, GA, ND, IL, CT, DE, UT, Democrats Abroad, AK, MO
Storyline: Early voting wins California for Clinton. Latino vote stays with Clinton, but Kennedy's endorsement makes MA much closer than expected. Obama wins only about 50 fewer delegates, continues gaining on Clinton through more momentum and more money. The race is a toss-up.
Republicans
McCain: NY, NJ, AZ, CT, IL, OK, DE, AL, MO, MN
Romney: CA, CO, AK, UT,
Huckabee: GA, WV
Storyline: Romney wins California to stay in the race, but McCain still is considered the overall winner. Huckabee continues to play the spoiler that prevents a coalition against McCain, as Dobson's followers refuse to listen to him.

I think Billary will win in California, and in NY. Obama in Illinois. McCain will win in CA. Romney in NY ánd IL. The rest could go any way.
I think the real story coming out of Super Tuesday is that there will still be a story on Super Wednesday. TX and OH will still be up for grabs. On the other hand, all the candidates now look just alike. The only thing that differentiates Obama and Clinton is sex and skin color, both topics are taboo in their party, so there are no real issues. Romney and McCain have even less differences. And they all have the same opinions, so who cares? The Iraq War and Immigration; tell me who is different really. We'll be in Iraq as long as Israel and Saudi Arabia tell us to stay. All 4 candidates want to throw open the borders to ultra-cheap labor from abroad.
THE REAL STORY: What will happen OUTSIDE the Republican and Democratic parties, once the public finds that the duo-party platform has already been decided. Will it be four more Years of Four More Years, or will the people opt out. All the 4 candidates have rotten stories linked to them. The proposed alternatives were hideous. Will a third party form? Will McCain die before or after he is nominated? Will the conventions be rumped, and who will do it, and how? Stay tuned, it's far from over tomorrow.

Clinton will win: Arkansas, California (but by a small enough margin to allow Obama to practically declare victory), Connecticut by a nose, New Jersey by a hair, New Mexico, New York by a smaller than expected margin, Oklahoma, Tennessee
Obama will win: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware by a nose, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois by a huge margin, Kansas by a huge margin, Massachusetts by a hair, Minnesota, Missouri by a hair, North Dakota, Utah
Headline: Obama sweeps through red states and takes a bite out of Northeast and Southwest, well-positioned to sweep remaining February states, gains momentum in Ohio and Texas to lead to his nomination.
Republicans: McCain wins every state except Arkansas, names Huckabee as running mate. Mitt Romney schedules town hall meeting and cries like a baby.
Further prediction: the Obama-McCain battle inspires millions of new voters to come to the polls, and Obama wins a decisive victory, turning several red states blue.

Obama wins 8 states: IL, MA, GA, CO, NM, ND, AK, Samoa, UT -- total delegates: 813
Storyline: Clinton wins split decision, but not by enough. Obama expected to take over lead in coming primaries that are more favorable to his message and demographic.

11 States each. Clinton ekes out must win in CA due to early voting, while Obama wins voting in CA on Feb 5th. Clinton stronger in primary states, Obama in caucus states. Clinton edges Obama in delegates, but Obama in good shape because 1) upcoming Potamic primary should favor him; 2) he has an advantage in the money race; and 3) slower schedule favors him. Interesting tidbit (AP):
In Topsfield, Mass., where a steady stream of voters filed to a polling place in a cold rain, teacher Marcia Spector, 58, made the "very, very tough" decision to support Obama, reasoning he would be more able than Clinton to win the presidency in the fall. "I just feel that he is dynamic and he is for change," she said. "He doesn't bring the baggage. I think he's more electable, actually."
It was tough, too, for Mary Jordan, 43, a teacher's aide - so tough she didn't make up her mind until she was in the polling booth. Voting Republican, she went for Romney, the state's former governor, because of his business experience, while offering no one a glowing endorsement. "I think he's the least unlikable," she said. "I really didn't like any of them."

Clinton - 861 delegates - Alaska, Arkansas, Califonia, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York
Obama surges ahead to take a majority of states. Only Clinton's big lead in New York gives her the delegate edge for the night. Momentum is clearly on Obama's side as mid-western and southern states all line up for Obama.

Romney - 238 delegates - Alabama, Massachusetts, Utah

"(Barack's Georgetown Facebook support group has a much cooler name, of course: "Obama Is a Pi#p.")
I don't just feel the "Hillary effect" on campus. Last summer, upon returning home to Jacksonville, Fla., I ordered a "Hillary Clinton for President" bumper sticker and proudly pasted it onto the back of the family car. In the weeks that followed, nothing changed for me (except for the lovely drivers of northeast Florida who showed their support by raising their middle finger in solidarity)."

DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY:
Storyline: Obama will generally do better than expected even a week ago, but will disappoint those of us hoping for a huge upset. He'll win most of the caucus states with solid majorities, win Illinois and Georgia by at least 20 points, and will eke out victories in Alabama and Delaware. Clinton will outperform the more pro-Obama polls in every northeastern state except New York. She'll win Arkansas by 20 points and New York by 15; she'll barely win Missouri and Minnesota, and will win California by .5%
Obama will win:
Illinois by 30 (% popular vote)
Georgia by 25
Alaska by 15
Idaho by 12
North Dakota by 10
Utah by 19
Kansas by 6
Colorado by 5
Alabama by 2
Delaware by 1
Clinton will win:
Arkansas by 25
Tennessee by 17
New York by 15
Oklahoma by 10
Massachusetts by 10
New Jersey by 10
Arizona by 8
New Mexico by 5
Connecticut by 4
Minnesota by 2
Missouri by 2
California by .5
In terms of delegate count, although Clinton will win more states, Obama's large margins in Illinois and Georgia will give him more delegates overall. He'll come away with 846 to Hillary's 835.

Interestingly, Bloomberg still considering...
'Despite consistent denials that he will run for president, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg "may soon begin a massive operation to get on the ballot in up to 15 states even though the billionaire mayor may not decide until May whether to run," the AP reports.
Bloomberg's "evaluation of his own plans could stretch all the way into May, contrary to conventional wisdom that he would make up his mind after Super Tuesday, said Doug Schoen, who was Bloomberg's pollster in his mayoral campaigns and remains part of the mayor's inner circle."
Said Schoen: "This can play out over the next two to three months before he has to make a decision."

Part 2 the Republican evening.
By 9:00 EST we will know that McCain has
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee, West Virginia (601 delegates)
Romney will have LOST Mass, but win: Colorado, North Dakota and Utah (158 delegates
Huckabee: Arkansas and Georgia (106 delegates)
California closes at 11:00 EST. and the results come in, slowly but surely. Romney carries California. By 11:30, every channel has declared Romney the winner of Ca's 173 delegates.
So to recap:
McCain:
AL
AK
AZ
CT
DE
IL
MA
MN
MO
MT
NJ
NY
OK
RI
TN
WV
Total Delegates:601
Romney:
CO
ND
UT
Total Delegates:331
Huckabee:
AR
GA
Total Delegates: 106
McCain is declared the winner; Romney(embarassed by Mass, but ever vigilant) fights on, but more stories appear about his losing his home state than winning California. He tries to spin that he won his "home state" of MI and the Mormon "home state" of UT. To no avail--he drops out on one of the Sunday morning talk shows. Huckabee drops out the next day and endorses McCain.
To everyone's surprise, McCain announces his running mate will be Charlie Crist of FL--but Huck is still loyal and soldiers on to bring Southern, social and religious conservatives to the McCain camp.
