Obama Addresses "Bitter," Clinton Hits Back
It didn't take long for the comments made by Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) at a San Francisco fundraiser last weekend to become fodder for tonight's debate.
Asked by Charlie Gibson whether he understood why some people would be offended by his comments -- about "bitter" victims of small-town economic distress clinging to their religion and guns -- Obama reiterated his past statements that he had simply misspoken and that his remarks did not reflect his personal views about small town residents.
"There is no doubt that I can see how people were offended," he said. " It is not the first time I have made a statement that was mangled up and it won't be the last."
Clinton was not ready to let the issue drop, calling Obama's statement a "fundamental misunderstanding" of why people are religious or value their right to own a gun. "I just don't believe that is how people live their lives," Clinton added.
End of story? Not even close.
Obama, clearly loaded for bear on this issue coming into the debate, evoked Clinton's 1992 comment that she would not simply stay at home and bake cookies as first lady as evidence that politicians occasionally misspeak and that it is wrong to conclude that a misstatement represents the true feelings of a politician.
"The problem we have in our politics is you take one person's statement if it's not properly phrased and you just beat it to death," said Obama. "That's what Senator Clinton has been doing over the last four days."
Clinton, of course, responded -- noting that her comments about Obama as an elitist did not come out of thin air but rather developed as a result of his remarks to a group of donors in San Francisco.
Bitter Battle #1 has been fought. The Fix thinks it was a draw -- although Obama gets points for sticking in the shiv with his "baking cookies" reference.

Interesting that Chris gives Obama CREDIT for "sticking in the shiv."
Chris, that doesn't sound very fair and balanced. I've never once heard a journalist give Clinton "credit" for "sticking in the shiv."

Forty five minutes into a 90 minute "debate" before the first question on actual substance. Can I grow up to be a commentator/anchor?
Even the "inside baseball" questions had problems- citing the Constitutional provision of the #2 vote getter being VP managed to neglect the constitutional amendment which vitiated the very section they quote. Come on, a 7th grader could write better questions than this.
And now, 63 minutes into a 90 minute debate, Stephanopolous prefaces his first question on the economy with "let's turn to the economy, which is the number one topic on people's minds." Glad to hear them finally get to it......

At the same time Michelle cries over not getting the kids into Phillips Andover. Poor, poor black kid from the mean streets of Hawaii. Let me tell you about the story of a man named Jed. Poor country boy barely kept his family fed. Then one day when he was shooting at some food. And up from the ground came some babbling head. Beverly. Hillbillies. Cry me a river, Obama. You are a nerdy rich kid (playing the poor black child).

Wow, the queen of mis-spoken words and mis-steps is trying attack Barack Obama on a misquote. Well isn't that the desperation pot calling the kettle black? HRC is in desperation mode and she knows if PA isn't a blowout victory, she's all but finished so she's taken the Republican Madden Playbook and airing it out. Man up Barack, Man up.

I am an undecided female voter and this entire debate has been very one sided. Obama was grilled endlessly and Hillary got of with one question. What about the fact she has a somewhat uncontrollable husband galavanting around the country saying whatever he wants. How about what he will be doing while she is running the country. Georgie S. is totaly in the Clinton camp.

Joe, NC - Do you get your own glass, or simply grab the whole punchbowl and guzzle the kool-aid?
How can he condescend to churchgoers, HE IS ONE.
Hangs out with terrorists? Where do you get that ridiculous idea? Hannity? Rush?

I think Barack O'Bama is looking more presidential , Clinton is looking mean ..

Charlie Gibson and Stephanopolous should be embarassed about their performance so far.

Before or after we ask the Clintons how they're getting by on $20M per year?
Look, how much the candidates make is irrelevant. Who the heck wants to elect a leader of the free world who has not been successful in his/her life?

Aside from the fact that this is hysterically funny, the GOP trying to paint OBAMA as Elitist!
Funny, I thought Bush's 'base' were the Haves and the Have-Mores. And they say he's NOT elitist?
Bottom line is the guy was RIGHT. Middle America is just pissed off because someone finally figured them out, and it wasn't the party they wanted. Poor poopsie...

George channels the neo nazi sympathiser Sean Hannity with the William Ayers thing. WTF is going on. I heard George on his radio show yesterday and he gets fed that stupid William Ayers question. Are you kidding me are we going to now have to vet who everybody knows, and pick and choose what is allowed or disavowed.
Posted by: Albert Johnson Jr | April 16, 2008 8:51 PM
Are you nuts, CC? Obama is getting worked here. So far in this debate, he condescends to gun owners and churchgoers, his pastor hates America, and he hangs out with known terrorists. That's what America is seeing. Not sure what you're watching.

When do we ask "How are you getting by on only 4.2 million a year, Obama?"

Obama is taking wayyyyy too much time to answer these "scandal" questions and he's going to lose out when the debate finally, exhaustedly turns to the actual issues.
As an Obama supporter, I simply am not pleased with how this is going so far.

ABC SUUUUUUCKS for not broadcasting this live to the West Coast. Basically underscores the fact that this event is NOT news, it's merely theatre.
