Obama Responds (Sort Of) to "Bitter" Controversy
Anyone paying attention to the Democratic presidential race knew that once Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) began running television ads in Pennsylvania attacking Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) for comments he made to a group of donor last week, a response from the Illinois senator wasn't far behind.
The Obama campaign just released that response: an ad entitled "Represent."
Meanwhile, three new polls conducted for Bloomberg and the Los Angeles Times seem to suggest that Obama's comments have changed nothing in the fight for the Democratic nomination in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Pennsylvania.
In Pennsylvania, Clinton leads Obama, 46 percent to 41 percent. Obama leads in North Carolina, 47 percent to 34 percent, and, perhaps most surprisingly, holds a 40 percent to 35 percent edge over the New York senator in the key toss-up state of Indiana.
Pennsylvania's primary is a week from today while Indiana and North Carolin are set to vote on May 6. Wins by Obama in two of the three -- especially considering the withering gauntlet of bad press he has had to run over the past five days -- could effectively end thre Democratic presidential race.
"As we've seen across the state, Pennsylvanians are rejecting the say-and-do anything tactics they've seen from the Clinton campaign over the last few days," said Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan. "They want leadership that gets past the politics of division and distraction, and focuses on solutions to the challenges our families face, and that's what this ad and Barack Obama's campaign speak to."
The footage that opens the Obama commercial is taken from Clinton's appearance at an Alliance for American Manufacturing forum in Pittsburgh. Clinton's remark ("I know that many of you, like me, were disappointed by remarks he made") was greeted with some catcalls and booing -- a sign, the Obama ad argues, that average voters think Clinton is playing politics and are sick of it.
(AAM executive director Scott Paul released a statement a few hours ago insisting that the coverage of Clinton being booed misrepresented the tenor of the gathering. "The crowd reacted strongly throughout both candidates' remarks, voicing agreement or disagreement, cheering and applauding in response to both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama," Paul said).
Obama's ad never mentions the controversial remarks that Obama made in private to a group of donors in San Francisco, a recognition perhaps that there is nothing to be gained politically for the Illinois senator by repeating his comments about "bitter" victims of small-town economic distress clinging to their religion and guns.
The ad also reveals that Obama's campaign is doing its best to stay on message despite the obvious distractions posed by the hubbub over his remarks last weekend.
The key lines in the ad -- "There's a reason people are rejecting Hillary Clinton's attacks. Because the same old attacks won't lower the price of gas or fix our economy" -- are at the center of not only Obama's response to the current controversy but the entire message behind his campaign.
That is, he may have chosen his words poorly in calling small town residents "bitter," but nearly all the negative political response is an example of the of the politics as usual that his candidacy is aiming to end.
The Clinton campaign, not surprisingly, differs in the interpretation of the importance of what Obama told those now famous donors in San Francisco.
"We believe that this is an important issue for voters," Clinton strategist Howard Wolfson said on a conference call organized by the campaign this morning. "We believe there is a strong reaction to it."
To that end, the Clinton campaign has been circulating various tidbits of information from across the country suggesting a level of unease among Democrats with what Obama said. The latest is in the form of an open letter from a group of current and former Montana elected officials. "We wish to express our sincere disappointment with comments made by Sen. Barack Obama at a private San Francisco fundraiser last week -- comments which demean the heritage and values of working Montanans," the group wrote.
The wonderful thing about politics is that the voters in the end will sort through all the conflicting arguments and make a judgment. In a week's time we'll likely have some answers as to whether this whole controversy was an overblown remnant of politics past or a key turning point in the race to come.
In the meantime, we ponder and debate -- which you are all welcome to do in the comments section below.

Obama thinks its tough now. That debate was easy. She could have hit like he did but instead answered the questions. For the record Bill commuted the sentences after they had served time, showed remorse and were rehabilitated. Obama however took the money from a homegrown terrorist who thought the bombings did not go far enough. Keep in mind Obama chose to socialize with Ayres.
I think we should however at one thing that he said on the stump. If the cameras are being brought in as she goes to the bar to get a shot and a beer its just politics. Trying to be just one of you. It's phony and cheep. Its how the old political game is played. Don't fall for it. Keep in mind he did it a month ago. Then he tried to show us he's just one of us bowling in a suit complete with white shirt and tie. Us small town hicks always bowl dressed like that. You could tell he played a lot. I guess he thought if we do it how hard can it be? Even Hucklebee can bowl. Guess it was harder than he thought.

If polls are so accurate, why do we even have primaries? We'll just let the polls decide. I mean they are ALWAYS accurate. I thought Barry was going to wet his pants last night. What a wimp.

When was the last time any of you obama lovers white -black--everybody see Obama in an inner city situation during this campaign. This elitist black man won'.t even go into the most needy areas of his MAIN SUPPORTERS--what in the hell is he afraid of--a gang fight or someother situation that plagues EVERY BLACK INNER CITY IN ANY BIG CITY!!! He won't campaign with his own-- other than the people you see behind him during his campaign events. This guy is more than an eletist-- he is a fraud and a man with no core and would like to to loose his black identity. If the African American community decides to opt out of the Natioal election BECAUSE he lost the nomination I say let them stay home. They will sow what they reap--the will loose whatever gains they have made in voting rights-- go to head of the line in attending college---and they are throwing away the opportunities they have gained-- that 2 White Presidents helped them attain. The wonderful work that Rev, King did and his honor will be smirched if they opt out of the voting booth. It will set them back another 50 years of progress. If this is what they want I say go for it--BUT keep your mouths shut about how bad this country's race relations are--IT" WILL BE YOUR COMMUNITIES FAULT> How sad and idiotic that stance would be.

believe it or not...i'm back..and im going to not only state i 'm a civil rights attorney
but i worked on one of the major intiatives of te clinton 90's DOJ civil rights special litigation initatives...
which resulted in a new national policy level of enforcement for what is termed in the rarified field of civil rights law
called "pattern and practice" police brutality issues...
this was done w/ the special litigation unit under the Clintons...
in associatin in those "unique" days...
when most of the blacks in this country
did NOT see bill clinton as a racists...
because in a word...
he wasn't and isn't...
and because..he was willing to allow his justice department to actually
TRY to enforce a new law which John Conyers and the black caucus created and put thru congress w/bill's backing and support...
and which target the epidemic issue of police brutality in this natino
NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAD DONE THIS OR HAD THE LEADERSHIP ON THIS ISSUE IN MODERN US HISTORY
bill clinton'sjustice did..it
however...
and i was among the first attorneys on a private level to assist in this effort
....because it was one of those
"small towns" that obama folks wish to forget about...
unless your are either making 250,000 and living some rich white surburban neighborhood
or living in the hood...of a major urban center and don't realize in small town usa and moderate size town usa ...
very very serious social problems exist
which ...some other than the clintons
do not have t experience nor the will nor the insight to actually put the entire weight of their administration against in fighting for
...like they did inside of southeastern ohio...
in the 1990'and in doing so...changed the way modern policing has been viewed...
both in pratice and theorectically...
ever since..even despite bush gonzale's best efforts to negate this entire approach to usa human rights issues..inside our middle america towns and cities...
so...go figure
guys...
yes...appalachian blue is the real mccoy...
and he carries a VERY BIG STICK when it comes to knowing...
all about police misconduct and living in the hood...
but i would caution you who think i'm part racists..or
that i think its easy for a black man to run for high state or national office in america
...but i can say this
you can't run...and try to be all things to all social groups like obama is doing...
it doesn't work and it tends to make
a black man...a real black intellectual
LOOK like a MAJOR TOM
ok???
capish?
all of you in the hood or in distressed urban and/or rural areas know this
....that a man can not claim he can solve this issues of america's inner cities and rural poor and generate a feel for th ppor
while catering to the richest white suburbanite crowd...ever in american modern history...who care about as much as for th inner city [except to make a new million dollars upon the backs of teh urban poor's property ]
...and then...claim to be the candidate of
"unity"
unity in this manner....is not unity...
its either incredibly naive..which i don't obama is...
or its incredibly cynical...
which...i think...and have to say...
its probably closer to the truth...
even black males NOT from teh hood
have ambition..and this is NOT a bad thing
its just they have a much longer road to travel...
and making friends in the name of ronald raygun's policy and friendship with the white power structure elites...
cutting out the white appalachian masses...
is...simply
...an zero sum game...w/ the capital CYNICAL written ALL OVER IT

guess what guys.and girls...
just come to western pa in the outlying areas and say the polsters from la know ANYTHING of what the people of these regions believe about obama's comments
...i bet the la times and the bloomberg poll..NEVER ONCE SPOKE TO ANYONE IN AVELA pa...
...they ALL are going to vote against him..because ...
they believe what he said and meant the first time he said it...not his ever more and more pathetic answers...
even as we saw tonight..which was again...no apology...
its just a shame...
the larger polls...don't reflect something
as real ...
as the real american people who live in real towns inside of real genuine small towns across regions like ohio..pa and wva...and ky...
its as if the polls...don't really capture ANYTHING of reality anymore...

So much spew from both the HRC and BHO camps! How about sticking with the Democratic party, whoever shall be the nominee????
True, Obama's "bitter" remarks showed all the sensitivity of a toilet seat, but the bottom line remains that the core of his statement is true even as the language is unfortunate: white or black or brown, urban or suburban or rural, diploma-less or PhD-toting, we're being divided and ultimately conquered by the McCain-Bush Republican plutocrat (read: big-bucks-get-to-rule) crowd, and we're being ignored (or worse and more to the point, screwed) by the politics-as-usual morons in Washington.
Wake up, people, and you particularly, blueappalachian. I'm an old, white, male Appalachian, but if I see BHO and his supporters as a greater threat than McCain and his plutocrats, then I'm not seeing the big picture. Remember, people voted for W because he looked like them and cut brush on his ranch--what an idiot he has proven to be. I don't give a who-rang-diddly-damn if the Democratic nominee looks or sounds like me (gee, I guess neither a black man nor a white woman will pass that test); what I care about is that we MUST end Republican rule. So I'll vote for either HRC or BHO. Heck, I'll vote for an atheist (which I'm not) or a gay (not that, either, but who cares?) or a black, brown, blue or chartreuse person if he/she/it has better ideas than John McCain. From what I've seen thus far, that would be highly likely.

My father lost his $20 per hour construction job at a company he'd worked for for 16 years. He was one of three people left out working in the field who was not an illegal immigrant. The illegals there usually work for around $12. You can't support a family on that.
He's a blue collar worker and you're damn right he's bitter. So am I. What's Hillary going to do about that?
How about doing something about NAFTA which Hillary supported and Bill pushed through. So many people in Mexico have been hurt by NAFTA, the immigration rate went up by 60% after it was passed.

Chris, you must be kidding.
It's a funny description of Hillary. On the contrary Obama is the guy who'll say anything and do anything to WIN. Strange, strange, strange how the liberal media fall for Obama once again to reverse and put the blame on Hillary instead.
What he said was so crystal clear and yet he didn't even have the decency to Apologize.
He's arrogant, condacending and a LIAR. He is the kind of guy who will never take responsibility for anything. Instead he'll rather spin things out of it and mock the people and insult the intelligence of the people that he offended.
Go OBAMA!!!

If anyone noticed, those voices (in the ad and on you tube) were not booing. They were saying "No. Noooooooo." She made the statement "I know that many of you, like me, were disappointed by recent remarks that he made" and the crowd was saying "NOOO." Not boo.
In other words, we are NOT disappointed. Barack is telling us THE TRUTH! And you just keep pandering!
For those of you who keep referring to Rezco, I have two names for you; Norman Hsu and Whitewater. They are not connected but they are certainly worse and more deeply criminally serious that any Obama envolvement with Rezco.
For those of you who think the Republicans will "eat Obama alive" - one has to laugh. With McCain? He's out there uncontested showing his ignorance of foreign policy and the economy every day. Supporting Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy and going for more war. Well, 27% of the country might vote for that. And after all the Clinton "vetting" of Obama, what's left for the Repubs? Yeah, they may try but personally, I just can't WAIT to see a debate between McCain and Obama!!
Posted by: sheridan1 | April 16, 2008 4:56 PM
J Cline said...Obama meant what he said. And when decoded, what he told those rich San Fran donors was this: that rural Pennsylvania whites believe in God, crave guns, and hate outsiders because they're basically too stupid to realize their problems are economic, not social.
And there's your reason why Obama will lose in November. The Kool-Aid-swilling Obamaniacs can delude themselves, but the Democrats are bound to lose. Obama will be running less against McCain than he will from the echoes of his own flapping gums.
I agree 110% and I'm a dem voter in PA

The ignorance of some people is just amazing! More than a few people here have jumped to the defense of Bill Clinton, blathering on and on about how much he did for the Democratic Party. Well, when Bill took office the Democrats had a solid majority in the House and Senate. When he left, they had neither! When he took office, trade tariff's accounted for 25% of federal revenue and our jobs were protected by those tariff's. When he left, the tariff's were gone, the free trade trainwreck was heading off the bridge, and we were inunderated with illegals due to his insane open border policies and cheap guest workers like the hordes of Indian and Chinese youngsters here stealing jobs from Amercian workers. Bill Cltinon was a complete disaster and is quite as much to blame for the current messes (including Iraq) as are the Bush's.

"If you're happy and you know it clap your hands!"
I may be missing something, but it's not the contented among us that call for Change. It's not the contented man that risks himself in the political fray. If we're happy we clap our hands, whistle a happy tune and let things roll on the way they been going.
If you're happy and you know it, why bother with either Hillary or Barack? If you're happy with the War of Terror, the expansion of executive powers and the national debt, the shredding of the Constitution, and the secrecy of the Patriot Act, the torture of Abu-Graib, the erosion of the world's esteem, why not 'stay the course' for Bush III? The esteemed Senator John McCain hails from Arizona; that final desert resting place of many ancient Americans with outmoded ideas. Senator McCain, he of short temper and short memory is prepared for a 100 year stay in Iraq, another desert that will become the final resting place of countless young Americans.
For me the issue is moot. I support Barack, but should he not earn the nomination I will support Hillary. I can't see myself clapping my hands and whistling a happy tune as John McCain takes the oath of office. There is simply too much at stake for the nation for Democrats to join the 'bitter' because their preferred choice didn't earn the nomination.

I live in NC and plan to vote for Obama in the primary. HOWEVER, if Hillary wins the nomination, I'll vote for her. From the looks of this thread, that should shock some of you.
You see, while I have issues with Hillary on a personal level, a vote for her means a vote for the issues important to me: an end to the war in Iraq, a return to diplomacy, a health care system that works, the advancement of gay rights, a new focus on alternative energy sources, and more.
What's the alternative? Voting for John McCain out of spite because my candidate didn't win? McCain will continue the war in Iraq, possibly begin one in Iran, do nothing about the shameful state of our health care, etc. -- in other words, he will go against 90% of my views.
I know which issues matter the most to me, and which two of the three Presidential candidates share my beliefs. Why would I vote any other way but Democratic on Nov. 6 -- no matter whose name fills that blank?

Some of you are so in love with Obama that you can't get your rose colored glasses off long enough to get what is going on here.
This is going beyond reason. Hillary "attacking" Obama? No, not at all.
I feel like those who are so over come by the Obama campaign are so caught up in it, it reminds me of a cult much like the ones who tell you to drink poison koolaid, and you do.

Far from actually being a "maverick," the one word that would accurately describe his time in public life is: "a**hole." That McCain was able to successfully make himself be thought of as a "maverick" says as much about the press as it does about McCain. That is, one cannot understand how McCain did this without also understanding the delicate psychology of the Washington D. C. press corps.
Most Washington journalists have a deeply internalized sense of self-loathing. They see themselves as cowardly, flaccid, ineffectual, impotent wimps. In this, they're not entirely wrong. They have always secretly admired the as*hole jocks who used to push them around in high school. The journalists would console themselves with the soothing affirmation that the as*holes were not as smart as they were. They were right, of course, but still, deep down the journalists secretly admired the as*holes.
Along comes John McCain -- an as*hole, but an as*hole who is nice to them, an as*hole who comes to back of the plane and jokes around with them and doesn't make them feel unmanly. Why, sometimes, it seemed as if McCain really liked them. A few years of this, and suddenly McCain's not a temperamental, dangerously unstable as*hole, he's a "maverick."
But the self-esteem issues of the weakling press notwithstanding, McCain is, in fact, an as*hole. An as*hole who wants to be the President of the United States. As an as*hole senator, he the sort of guy who says things like:
• "Only an as*hole would put a budget together like this!" (to New Mexico Republican Pete Dominici)
• "I'm calling you a f*cking jerk!" (to Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley)
• "F*ck you. I know more about this than anybody in the room." (To Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn)
This is why Senator Dominici said in 2000 that "I decided I didn't want this guy anywhere near a trigger." It is presumed by this he meant the nuclear trigger.
McCain is also the sort of guy who would tell the following joke:
Q: Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
A: Her father is Janet Reno.
This is the sort of humor as*holes find funny. When he told the joke, Chelsea Clinton was seventeen years old.
In speaking about whether he had ever witnessed McCain's notorious temper problem, former Pennsylvania Republican Senator Rick Santorum said, "I don't know anybody in the Senate who hasn't. Everybody has their McCain story."
And if America elects this temperamental, dangerously unstable, angry old as*hole, America will have its own McCain story too.

The Democrats have completely painted themselves into a corner.
If HRC wins (through theft, I imagine), the party will tear itself apart. This will be especially true given the election-stealing paradigm that so many of the activists maintain.
If Obama wins, HRC's attacks have opened up so many holes in his armor that what should be a cakewalk for the Dems will be a real dogfight, maybe with McCain favored.

Like an older wiser woman to Obama recently, "You misspoke, but didn't lie".
Hopefully at the debate tonight, Obama articulately counters the elitism label placed on him, by pointing out he was raised by a single young mother who at one point was on food stamps, he lived in a poor Indonesian village for 4 years as a young child, he earned scholarships and took out loans to attend college and law school, and just recently paid off his school loans. Then, he just needs to contrast that with someone who grows up living in a nice home where summer vacations to a lake cottage were the norm, spent 16 years as first lady of Arkansas and the US, and who earned over $100 million in the last 8 years.
Who is elitist again? Sorry Hillary-supporters the elitist label won't stick. In fact, it may hurt Hillary and McCain who fall more freely into that elitism charge.

Does anyone else see a PATTERN in how HUSSEIN will address an issue once or twice.. Not really saying a lot... He says he is 'sorry' and will not do again... THEN MOVES ON.
Figures that the AMERICAN VOTER is all ready in his HIP POCKET.
We know that he is the MYSTERY MAN. If you do the research... we only KNOW what he wants us to know about his history. He has never walked in the shoes of a poor black , poor white or even a middle class voter.
He SAY he knows how we all feel. But he is the ELITE of the Elite. He initially declared himself 'Barry' Then he used his birth Name. Instead of being recognized for his bi-racial heritage... he is BLACK AFRICAN AMERICAN. Completely disregarding his white heritage. What has he done for the WHITE VOTER in Chicago and in the Senate?? He has NEVER ATTENDED A PUBLIC SCHOOL... But wants to talk about OUR educational system. As far as I can tell he has NEVER CONTROL ANY BUDGETS... except for his campaign... AND WE KNOW that MONEY TALKS AND S--- FLOATS. He is supported by BIG ORGANIZATIONS AND the Wealthest of the Black and White Community... WHY????
These groups/individuals OWN HUSSEIN..
I still find it hard to believe that he was TOO BUSY to visit his Mom on her death bed.
HE WAS TOO BUSY. To me that is selfish and perhaps indicative of his true feelings about being BI-RACIAL.
His comments about the Middle Class are obviously... HIS REAL FEELINGS regarding the White Middle Class, and he is BITTER because they are American and proud of it, and SEE THROUGH his smoke and mirrors.
If he is elected... those who VOTED FOR HIM.. Will be LIKE THOSE who voted for GOD BUSH the last two terms..
BEWARE THE BLACK WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING.

The following is a good indicator of where things are going -- the longer the campaign goes on, the less people like Hillary. As a former supporter, I'm sorry to say that. But she has run a nasty, divisive, Republican-style campaign, criticizing other Democrats that many of us admire -- even complimenting the Republican opponent who would lead us into more foolish wars and greater economic difficulties by following the exact same neocon policies as Bush. She has burned her bridges and every day on the campaign she does something that makes me like her even less.
"Probably the most significant revelation in the WP's new poll is just how much this presidential campaign has hurt Clinton's image. Obama now holds a 10-point lead over Clinton among Democrats, and not only do people widely see him as more electable, 54 percent claim to have an unfavorable view of the former first lady. While 52 percent of Americans considered Clinton "honest and trustworthy" in May 2006, that number has now fallen to 39 percent. The drop is slightly steeper among Democrats, 63 percent of whom now consider her honest, which marks an 18 point decrease from 2006."
Posted by: drindl | April 16, 2008 9:08 AM
Obama's response was clever, honest, and I believe effective. Sure, he screwed up in his original choice of words. He's human. So is Hillary, and so is McCain. Well, so is McCain...

Generally speaking, the first thing that comes out of your mouth is the thing you really believe.
Obama, speaking to an urbane audience of rich ultraliberal donors where he thought there would be no unsympathetic observers, made an off-the-cuff explanation of why he wasn't drawing rural votes in Pennsylvania.
Problem was, a pro-Obama blogger with a sense of ethics was videotaping his closed-door speech. Correctly, she sensed a story, and she put the footage online for all to see.
(Cue the pro-Obama crowd to dogpile anyone who hasn't drunk the Kool-Aid.)
When you think you're among friends, you don't censor your words. Obama didn't.
There is no reason to think he meant anything but exactly what he said -- that rural whites who don't support him are the same ones who become gun nuts and bible-thumpers and anti-NAFTA xenophobes. He wraps that sneer in an olive branch of explanation (because they're "bitter" over losing jobs).
But the real kernel of his meaning (and the correct reason for our condemnation) lies in Obama's crude caricature of rural whites as bigoted, uncultured suckers.
Obama was simply playing to his audience of West Coast sophisticates, who (as with so many cultural liberals) actually do see rural whites as unenlightened hicks who don't know what's good for them. In an effort to open their wallets, Obama confirmed their prejudices in a candid, private forum.
That revealing San Francisco video, along with the various gems of Rev. Wright sermons, will provide rich material for some highly effective attack ads for the GOP, when the general campaign begins.
Obama's subsequent dance of backsteps, clarifications, "regrets", and other obfuscations will prove helplessly ineffectual, when his original words are replayed endlessly for the general populace.
Obama meant what he said.

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm getting kinda' "bitter", myself, over how the national media is obsessed with digging into mole hills when there's a mountain of mud (and the possibility of yet another completely-owned-by-the-rich and corporate CEO's president) threatening to erode our beloved democracy!
(And I'm truly, deeply, sadly beginning to give up my last hope on our media's sense of patriotism if not their professional duty, Chris.)

POVERTY CZAR
When it comes to poverty I know what I'm talking about. See, its not on my website or in my book because I don't like to boast, but I was on the board of Walmart for six years. No company has done more to advance the cause of poverty around the world than Walmart and who better to get people out of poverty than the people that put them there in the first place. Hillary Clinton! She's in this for you!

Not picked up by Washington Post or any other media outlet that I can see is the REAL reason the Clintons and James Carville were so mad a Bill Richardson for endorsing Obama.
Richardson LURED Bill Clinton to New Mexico, away from the campaign trail, to FUNDRAISE for him, with the assurance that he would endorse Hillary.
This from Mary Matalin on Imus last Friday morning. Here is an audio link, on my blog.

Ummm, in case you haven't been paying attention the last several months, Obama has united enough people from all over the country to the point that he is leading significantly in elected delegates, states, popular vote, and small donations.
If you're really interested in Obama's positions and policy recommendations, you can read them in detail at www.barackobama.com.

"Bitter" because the Supreme Court interfered in the election process and appointed the "worst" possible person to the highest office in the land. "Angry" becuase the American people allowed our balloting process to be corrupted again in 2004, permitting the incompetence in office to continue an additional 4 years.
"Clinging" to weapons and religion as both are witnessed under assault, one in the Supreme Court and the other in the media.
Tell me once again what it was that everyone thought Barak Obama should answer or apologize? Excuse me? Is it so difficult to see the status of our America as it approaches the abyss? Will there be no alternative to this continued chaos?

Did you go to UC Berkeley with Dr svreader PhD?
Seriously, since you're a lawyer and all, do you have any reasoned opinion on how exactly a black person becomes president in America without trying to attract white voters?

Johnny B-
Make no mistakes about it- Obama's aims are not to "unite the country" they are to get elected. One prime example- how his campaign has handled race:

Welcome to My Dream Your Nightmare LOL
I'm an old white guy, but sorry I'm just not scared of "uppity" black people. Or "uppity" people of any race or ethnicity for that matter.
If "uppity" means sincerely caring about the future of all of Americas and the worlds people and having reasonable ideas of how to really make this country better, I'll take all that kind of "uppity" I can get.

The last president to get in as "better than the usual" was Carter- who found that when you can't work within the system, you can't get anything done. Thus abitious projects in transportation, healthcare, employment, etc. fell flat on their face. Obama is coming in on the same wave, but with no ambitious plans to speak of. At least I haven't seen any. One of you Obamites might want to fill the rest of us in if they exist...Being the "outsider" does not always work in Washington.

To Appalachin Blue:
Good people of color ain't yuour enemy, Bro! If you really look at the situation, I mean really honestly, you have to admit that we are facing the same hurdles - eating the same bad food, consigned to living in either '8 Mile' or the 'Hood', looking into the same seemigly bottomless abyss of forever enduring "..too much work and never enough pay."
We ain't enemies, my friend. Just wittless combatants. Skin color or a 'twang' does not an enemy make - unless we fall for the 'hype' perpetrated by those who seek to keep us fighting amongst ourselves, while neglecting to realize who is really deriving the ecomomic spoils from our labor.
This 'zero sum' cycle has to end before either of us actually prospers - not just works ourselves to death (which they don't mind giving either of us a gold watch for doing) - but actually prospers. The future is up to us, Bro'; and it ain't about wanting the women. (If ya' don't get it, then ya' just don't get it.) So, peace to you and to yours. May you really find the security you seek. But again, check to see who is really your enemy. It ain't me. B

LOL Omarosa's twin sister. Such a clever little troll. What no latte liberal line or Obama/Osama smear, or Obama is a Muslim, or bogus elitist label, or middle name insult, or the Obamas hate America, or Obama is a mass murderer? Dr svreader PhD would be disappointed in you.
But I have to admit I do I like it when no name trolls beg.
Posted by: Michael G. | April 16, 2008 12:39 AM
As I stated earlier, some of you people cannot make cogent arguments without making personal attacks. And then you wonder why no one takes you seriously.
(1)Comparing Michelle Obama to Omarosa: Why would you classify them as twins?
(2)Characterizing Obama as: one very uppity black elitist... The word elitist never even came to mind to you until Hillary Clinton used it. And why did you use the code word "uppity"? Think for yourselves, people.
(3) Saying the Gallup polls have no credibilty. Ridiculous.
(4) Saying that "He (Obama) may win the primary because the Dems are afraid to piss the black people off." That's downright stupid! Black people comprise a minority of the electorate. And who are the Dems to whom you refer? The public votes, not some mythical THEY.

so true...
zogby...IS a paid...polster ..[at least his relative is...]
for the obama campaign..
and yet the national media and this copy boy..for the post...
has the audacity of hope to insult
our voter intellects...
in ...yes...
small towns of ohio...
go figure...
one thing obama is VERY BITTER ABOUT
he ignored appalachian ohio..w/ a vengence
thinking he had the urban voter and the
"high end educated elits of white suburbs"
in his corner in ohio
and what is funny...and what i have to
say made me proud of my home state
he had ...
neither of them...
check out the REAL post election
demographics in OHIO
OBAMA LOST HIS ENTIRE ENGINE, muffler and the spare parts...
in ohio...
as well as his ass...
in this state...
he BARELY crawled out of OHIO ALIVE
[campaign wise that is]
and that is why he says
bitter things about small town usa
that was NO SLIP OF THE MOUTH FOR HIM
in the canton new register the weekend before the election
he said..in response to a question as to why he had not visited the lower portion of ohio...the poorer white southern section of ohio...which is a large part of this state
he said...
"there are some areas and regions of this
nation that are...BASICALLY out of touch and basically unable to be aided by
a president...
"
he was so fn arrogant..in his approach
to the white working class voter on southern ohio and the high unemployment and serious social lissues in this critical section of the state
which he NEVER ONCE VISITED IN THE ENTIRE MONTH LONG RUN UP TO THE CRITICAL OHIO ELECTion...
NO ONE VOTED FOR HIM IN OHIO ANY>>>i mean
ANYWHERE....
check out the post election ohio results
and you see the strategy the republicans
will use against him...
if the dem party super delegates become
numb and blind in their rush to endorse this man...
it will be...a three peat for bush and cheney...
and it will be an EXACT run on the
ohio bellweather electorate just LIKE BUSH AND ROVE DID IN 04
its NOT EVEN HARD TO UNDERSTAND...
if YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED IN
OHIO...
just have to research a little and understand ohio politics a little
and the rest of the nation...
ought to begin to appreciate more fully
what exactly happened here in ohio
his comments are PERFECTLY ON TARGET
because....
he knows..in both ohio and pa and wva
and others states like INDIANA
he stands to lose PRECISELY BECAUSE OF
his inability to reach small town
midwestern bell weather state voters
in places like York and STanton and
in Youngstown and Steubenville and
Marietta and portsmouth ohio...
he failed ...seriously...in these places
the national media wants everyone else in the nation to remain
invisible to...
and its these same small towns
that are going to either save us
and save democracy again
...just as their soldiers do on all the
major war battlfields in every generation
and /or its going to be these cities and towns that will continue to suffer
b/c the media elites and
the obama elitists...
wish to simply forget what Robert Kennedy learned was so powerful about this nation's problem with poverty and economic struggle
it is as deep in the rural sections of
america
as it is...in the inner cities
and ...sorry obama
but no rich burbs in philadelphia or
pittsburgh
or cleveland
will save you from the fate
of the small town america's voters
discernment of your real intentions
to blur their critical role in this
nation's true struggle for economic
and social visibility and justice
you can try to explain those comments
obama and you will have your supporters like chris here and others make your apology for y ou
but you will be toast...
after small town pa votes you down..seriously
you better hope their are more inner city phili votes than presently exist
because...it's over ...if you can't
manufacture the same kind of vote totals
like you did in all those fraudulent
caucas states which belie the true
strength of your campaign to date.

"The disrespect President Clinton, who had work hard to make the 90's prosperous. They are like Barack and Michelle Obama who are so ambitious that they have no gratitude to the Clintons who revived the Democratic party as a failing party."
I was happy to have Clinton in office, and I've ardently supported him and his legacy on a number of occasions. But, I owe him absolutely nothing, and certainly not "gratitude for reviving the party." The party took a major hit under Clinton, as he and his DLC strategy of triangulation kept him in office, which I certaily approved of, but carried no coattails with it. MacAuluff was about as ineffective as DLC chair as he has been running the Clinton campaign, and major Democratic issues took a back seat to his capitulation with Republicans throughout the decade as Democrats were consistently left to founder in Congressional races. The economy was great, but the greatest credit to Clinton was that he knew well enough to keep his hands off of it as much as possible.
Now, after the shame that has been Hillary's campaign, no more. I don't know if I can even bring myself now to defend the good things about his administration. Maybe after this is all over and he's out campaigning for Barack, I can see it, but until then this is just a shame.
As for the rest of the CLintonistas here, I'm calling it a night. Each of you seem to be in the midst of one of the phases of the grieving process, be it denial or anger in most cases. I'm just waiting for acceptance to kick in.

this guy is NOT for real people
but some folks in the big white
middle class out there think he's almost a savior from your white liberal guilt...
he's so cynical...everyone in the hood
is laughing their asses off at all you
stupid white folks in the burbs and small towns...
some of you dont even know when you have been insulted by one very uppity black elitist...
obama NEVER grew up in the urban poverty of america...
NEVER
he is NOT a product of that environment
and he was DEFEATED For congress in 2000 by a real black congressman who was both a real community activistis and a real black male..who actually had done something for his people
got it white voters from wisconsin who think you 're doing something for humanity by voting for this guy...
he's an imposter folks...

Obamas supporters are so hateful. The disrespect President Clinton, who had work hard to make the 90's prosperous. They are like Barack and Michelle Obama who are so ambitious that they have no gratitude to the Clintons who revived the Democratic party as a failing party.
They attached anybody who are not elite and rich like them. They had lots of money to paid their consultant and the media to make false prediction about Barack winning in the primary before the voters can vote.
The supporters of Barack is so hateful, maybe the got it too from Barack who was schooled by Rev.Wright for hatred of Americans and inciting sermons. Barack attached Hillary and no body complains from the media. But when its Hillary they are all over her and protect Barack like a baby.
When there is no fairnest on the media , we the Americans will suffer the effects of this. Look how the media and Bush campaign had done to elect Bush as president . This will be a repeatted history for Barck if we will not defeat this with the help of God.

eah, forced on you, by the dirtiest, sleaziest kind of politics of all...contesting every race in the country and winning time after time racking up an insurmountable lead.
Don't worry, a good non-elitist like Hillary understands you and wants to respect your will without being condescending, unless of course the people give Obama more delegates, more states, and more popular votes, in which case the superdelegates who know better will have to save you innocent naive folks from yourselves...

"The wonderful thing about politics is that the voters in the end will sort through all the conflicting arguments and make a judgment."
You're correct, Chris; it is a wonderful thing. It's even more wonderful when you actually participate in it and complete your civic duty to the society for which we all bear our measure of responsibility. Proudly proclaiming that you don't vote and then offering that as evidence of supposed impartiality is intellectually dishonest, and, in light of the preceding quotation, hypocritical.
Why don't you go down to Mississippi and talk to some older African Americans and see what they think about not exercising your most basic human right as a citizen so that you can be just that little bit more cocky on "Hardball"?
Posted by: JMS | April 16, 2008 12:04 AM
I didn't really have a dog in this race (I was an Edwards man) until Clinton's behavior in the lead-up to Texas and Ohio. Her chances of winning the nomination are so slim that it is difficult for me not to conclude that she is trying to weaken Obama in the general election. It sounds paranoid, but why else would she be running such a nasty campaign this late in the game? I was never a Clinton-hater, and actually admired the way she conducted herself in the Senate, but this has gotten very ugly.

Obama not only admitted that he should have used better terminology, but he also stood his ground and maintained that the essence of what he said he believes to be true. This is why so many Pennsylvanians are rallying behind him and why the polls remain largely the same.
Hillary intentionally, repeatedly lied. She invented a story about sniper fire and running on a tarmac and not being able to have a reception ceremony - all fabricated. And what did she do? She said she misspoke.
There is all the difference in the world between a clumsy talker and a pathological liar.
Give it up, Bradish and mibrooks - your candidate is the worst kind of Liar - and that isn't going to change - and because of that she isn't going to change Washington DC.
She lied about NAFTA. Her three main staff are pro-free-trade - Penn, Wolfson and Ickes. And her husband is in bed with Columbia and China.
And all this isn't to mention the multiple millions he received from questionable people and groups to his 'foundation.'

While Barack Obama may well fall victim to the internecine vissicitudes of 'slash and burn' politricks, the fact remains that his quest represents a revolution (merely one turn of the/a screw) in the way formerly dispossesed/(effectively) disenfranchised Americans view possibilities (verb in this context)from this point in our living history going forward. While branding Obama elitist may well have become the new vernacular for the old uppity 'Nigra', the ramifications are the same; and, the connotations are not lost upon those who study history and who have felt it's bloody lash. Evolution will occur regardless, and the despots, no matter how cleverly disguised and cloaked, can not stop it's unveiling. Time is truly longer than rope! Tick. Tock. B

we think the gallop polls have been one thing
they have been consistently wrong about this election and have been consistently wrong about who in Ohio and Texaz and California AND new hampshire ...was going to win...
in EACH Of these states..go check the poll the night before each electin
and see what MR. Gallop had hillary at and obama at...
and then tell us...that Gallop has ANY credibility...
especially AFTER New Hampshire
especially AFTER calfornia and texas popular vote
pa will go for hillary...then we will see what happens for obama in indiana...
seven cities mayors in indianapolis went for hillary to date and many cities and towns have turned out well for her...
she has the governor there and she has several key players there...as well...
but..we will see

Who is to blame for the silliness surrounding campaigns 2008?
Is it the press who chooses to cover the silliness rather than the substance?
Is it it the candidates, who focus on silly simple miststatements rather than the substance?
Or is it us, the voters, who sit back and soak it all in, rather than insist the discusion address substance such as Iraq, the economy, healthcare, crime, global warming, mortgage failures, and skyrocketing oil prices?
Maybe there are just no answers to the difficult questions and issues, so we have to be satisified with the silliness.

Posted by: Michael | April 15, 2008 9:11 PM - How typical of the current crop of liberals. When it suits your purpose, you write homosexuality as some sort of perversion. Of course, the rest of the time you are oh so sensitive. What a hypocritical swine you are; what a blind fool! For your information, I am a registered Democrat. Not just any Democrat, but someone who has worked for the party in every election since Nixon. I got fed up when I lived in Sweden and, in spite of the garbage you read about European's not caring about their leaders sexual adventures, people were actually embarrassed for me. Complete stranger, when they realized I was an American, expressed their disgust for his actions and wanted to know what I thought. Well, what I thought, still think, is that Bill Clinton and the Democratic Party sold out the workers of this country. Immediately following the passage of legislation enabling the H1-B visa the wholesale firing of tens of thousands of older engineers and programmers commenced. Immediately, the liberal writers started writing utter crap about this being somehow a good thing. The globalization bandwagon started and ran this country straight off the tracks. All of, every single rotten bit of it passed into law, the genius of Democrats! They did more, too, they removed the laws making corporate officers mutually responsible, they deregulated banks and brought us the savings and loan scandals, then Enron, now the mortgage mess. The Republican's, not to be outdone, passed the new disasterous bankruptcy laws, railroaded us into Iraq, and turned the land of the free and the home of the brave into a nation of bedwetters with the constant campaigns of fear and terror alerts. Wake up! Your politician's LIE TO YOU. They blow smoke in your ear when running for office and leave you scratching your head in wonderment once they are in office and do the bidding of the Wall Street scum who paid for their campaign. Obama and Clinton are both of that type. Maybe McCain is, too, but I don't know that about him and I do know that about Clinton and McCain. We had our chance in the early primaries to nominate someone decent and honest who genuinely cared about us and our issues - people like John Edwards - but the mobs of brainless cheerleaders wanted something new and stuck us with the same old hacks, one black and the other a woman, but no different than any of the tired old white hacks that have taken us for granted forever.

posting as not leichtman what is that other than a personal attack? How much more personal do you think you could get and exactly how low will you stoop? Sounds like your supporters have now turned to psychological warfare to try and intimidate and prove their candidate's wothiness. I noticed that same tactic when SEIU Obama supporters crashed a HC event and then their campaign turned it into a campaign commercial. How noble an endeavor; what honorabe campaign tactics.

an objective analysis of this new obama ad (w/c is decidedly & expectedly anti-hillary) re his 'bitter' putdown of the pennsylvanian folks--& all other smalltown folks, for that matter--shows an incoherent obama.
i am reminded of the same incoherence shown by juan marquez manuel when he was floored by our very own manny pacquiao thrice in their first fight, and once in the 3rd round of their latest brawl. you can see, by watching the tape, that marquez, wobbly & completely dazed, just didn't know where his corner was. that was how powerful pacquiao's knockdown pummeling of marquez was.
with the torrents of flaks going his way as a result of his "bitter" remarks against america's little people, obama just can't fathom what hit him; like marquez, obama is wobbly & dazed. even his highly-paid advisers & think tank can't come up with a fool-proof damage control response to the storm raised as a result of their client's clumsy, inappropriate utterances.
as a proof, see what kind of an anti-hillary ad they've just fashioned out. scatter-brained, dripping with venom, incoherent, trying-hard, weak, barack's latest ad bespeaks of a bungling obama & his by-now sputtering presidential bid to nail down the democratic party's nomination contest.
could it be that his infamous pennsylvania 'bitter' demeaning monologue would be the nail in his political coffin, the last straw to break the american voters' backs? not farfetched.
let's take a closer look at obama's questioned 'bitter' ad.
1st, they let hillary talk of the people's disappointment over obama's 'bitter' remarks. then, an apologist cum announcer (actually, an obama alter ego, just like joseph conrad's stowaway double for the ship's captain in conrad's short story, titled "the stowaway") segues in, & engages in a name-calling binge. "same old washington politics," is how obama/announcer/apologist dismisses the flaks against him.
"it won't lower the price of gas, or help our struggling economy," barack/announcer/apologist rambles on, speaking to himself (&, obviously, to himself alone).
how awkward the insertion, how long-shot, how non sequitur the connection is, how trying hard for obama just to 're-connect.'
the point that obama should have answered, the issue he should have confronted in this ad of his, if he were man enough, was how to explain his disparaging 'bitter' anti-small people dismissive remarks. everything else is irrelevant at the moment.
but no, obama chose to employ his textbook tactic of shifting the blame to his arch-nemesis, hillary. when he's cornered like a rat, obama unfailingly resorts to this stinking, disgusting dirty habit of his, much like a debater who chooses to malign his opponent if he can't rebut the latter's sound arguments. ad hominems has always been the refuge of the intellectually bankrupt mind.
poor obama. he's not, obviously, served well by his coterie of execrably fawning 'advisers' like axelrod, et.al.
as the ad lingers on, upon the viewers' sufferance, obama is heralded as the answer to this 'washington politics of distraction & division,' saying that, tongue-in-cheekily, "obama will represent all americans. he offers a new approach."
what a no-brainer, trying-hard, eye-rolling segue sequence. incredible assertions, absolutely false & misleading conclusion.
for how can the problem that obama is (with his 'bitter' remarks) be the solution to america's ills? how can the divider be the unifier? how can obama represent the little people from small towns, whom he has unabashedly ridiculed?
how can obama possibly represent all americans, when all that he loves is himself? witness his total dismissive remarks about the implied incompetence of ALL PAST ADMINISTRATIONS, including pres. bill clinton's economically pollyanish 2 terms. now, that's not only sacrilegious, this is being mentally dishonest.
how can you trust a guy like obama who, when he's simply a democratic prexy wannabe, is already lying through his teeth? what more when he's at the white house, God forbids!
in light of this searing, yet objective critique of obama's latest ad, it behooves the MEDIA/PRESS to thoroughly vet obama in all his spoutings & deeds (or misdeeds, if you will). fair's fair. some people try to demolish hillary, & the press report it with gusto. now you must yourself do your turn, & vet obama himself, & cease going gaga (in our filipino language, 'gaga' means stupid) over him. that would be balanced reporting.
thank you for enlightening the american voters.

"I supported Bill because I knew at his core, he was and is a centrist. I favor Hillary because would be a pragmatic, centrist President also. There would be ot Karl Rove or Dick Cheney pulling the levers behind the scenes with Hillary. She is a very strong willed individual. If Hillary drops out, then I would have to vote for McCain. The ultra-conservative faction of the Republican Party can't stand him because he doesn't allow them to think for him."
Obama will move to right for the GE and more than likely govern from a centrist position. His whole aim is to unify the country, I honestly believe that is his intent, the only way he could do that is from slightly left of center position. Hillary would also be a good president and reach across party lines. I like McCain but he loses me in the way he has internalized the neo-con philosophy. In that regard he is not a centrist but a continuation of Bush. I will not vote to sustain these damaging policies.

After all the MSM cacophony of the last 72 hours in regard to Sen. Obama remarks about the bitter feelings brewing in the U.S.A.'s financially strapped small towns, it is difficult to hear oneself think. In my humble opinion, it is Senator McCain who is out of touch and Hillary who is conveniently tone deaf as she and her husband have used similar language in the past to characterize the animus in economically marginalized small American towns. Nothing new. And I, who live in Gotham City, need not go far to run into bitter people. If you are in touch with reality and are a victim, one way or another, of the catastrophic policies of the Bush administration, you have every good reason to feel BITTER and frustrated, enraged, really, Let's face it, the Billary duo is desperate. This is why Hillary even threw Gore and Kerry under the elitist bus. She is shameless. People are not dumb. They detect her lack of sincerity and are repulsed by her shameless pandering.
Moreover, Hillary Clinton's low blows could not be dealt without a rabidly complicit over the top main stream media.Shame on them all!
What are we talking about? Does anyone familiar with Sen. Obama's life trajectory and policy positions truly believe he is an elitist or that he meant anything condescending in his remarks about the bitterness experienced by those living in forgotten and economically marginalized small towns? Come on, really.
Hillary Clinton is truly a Machiavellian figure who is set on destroying the campaign of the best candidate the U.S. has had in many generations.
In front of our very eyes she could not have stooped any lower than she has during this race.
Are we going to allow her to rob us the unique opportunity to be led by someone of Senator Obama's character and stature? Do we not recognize greatness when we see it?
What a sorry spectacle Hillary and Bill Clinton have become. A runaway train on a collision course. How sad.
It's difficult not to feel morose and disillusioned. And, yes, BITTER!

"Clinton is the only candidate tough enough and centrist enough to win in November."
This is still the dumbest meme propogated by Clinton supporters out there. As we've been over countless times, policywise these two are identical, with the main key difference being in Healthcare: Clinton wants mandatory coverage, Obama believes people should be able to opt out. Which is the more left-wing position? They seem to think one NJ survey, where the candidates differed on just two votes, is the definitive sign of how these candidates will be labeled. Who will be better able to defend against accusations that their healthcare policy, the signature issue for Dems right now, is creeping socialism?

Poster of Obama 'Bitter' Remark Receives Death Threats
Tuesday, April 15, 2008 10:23 AM
By: newsmax staff Article Font Size
The citizen journalist who first revealed Barack Obama's "bitter" remarks about small-town Americans has received death threats from Obama supporters.
Mayhill Fowler of Oakland, Calif., has been covering the Democratic presidential campaign and submitting her stories to the "Off the Bus" section of the Huffington Post Web site.
An Obama supporter and contributor to his campaign, Fowler obtained an invitation to an April 6 fundraiser in San Francisco that was designated as "closed" to the mainstream media.
At the fundraiser, Obama told the gathering that Middle Americans have turned to God and guns and against immigrants because they are "bitter" about their economic lot.
"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," he said.
"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment of anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
After her report on Obama's comments appeared on the Huffington Post site, Obama became the target of elitism charges by his presidential rivals, and Fowler received about 200 e-mail messages that she said ranged from "creepy to threatening," including several death threats, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Writers on the liberal Web site Daily Kos accused Fowler, 61, of feigning support for Obama to gain access to the San Francisco event.
"It's like the liberal blogosphere has issued a fatwa against me," Fowler told the Times.
She said she was "dismayed" by Obama's "bitter" words

Adults, when they carry on conversation, often have open minds about other people's views, and don't engage in personal attacks and name-calling when others disagree with them or otherwise fail to see the obvious wisdom of their positions. THAT is what's juvenile.

Interesting how those posting comments on the Wash Post sight get so detailed--not to say obsessive-compulsive--in their arguments! None more so than Senator Obama's frenzied supporters. Can they not understand that a man whose entire claim to the presidency is based on words--there are so few actions and such a slim resume after all--must accept that his words are going to be examined in great detail? And why the surprise that politicians would act politically in turning his own words against him?
Funny how Obama gets a pass for showing deplorable judgment--hello Rezko? hello Rev Wright (for 20 years Mr. Obama listened to that man's spewings?!!). He excuses himself as having been "boneheaded" with each example of his bad judgment. He jabs his finger oh-so-righteously when he speaks (and all he really does is speak--not act).
He off

Appalachian Blue--
Wherever we're from, the 'hood, from the redneckin' sticks (now THAT's closer to my neighborhood), from suburbia with its $300K+ homes (not like MY neighborhood, let me tell you . . .) the issue still should be whose ideas are best for the country. If you think that McCain is less elitist than either Obama or Clinton,
if you think McCain's values and world views are closer to what our country needs,
if you're disappointed that BHO turns out to be a politician with clay feet and a glib mouth and tailored suits you (or me, either) can't afford,
if you're disappointed with all of HRC's baggage (is there a moving van big enough?),
then vote for McCain.
But I don't see how another Republican administration BEGINS to compare favorably to what we'd get with either Democrat (their positions on the issues are close, did you notice?). McCain has more and nicer homes and suits than we do (for the record, I'm still paying for ONE home), and his ideas aren't sufficiently different than the ruinous ones the Dubya crowd shoved down our throats for the last eight years.
So Obama is _personally_ distasteful to you? OK, I'll concede to you your right to have that reaction, but I'd be much more worried about a McCain administration. I can like McCain _personally_, like him, I'm old and irascible, and I like HIS glib mouth, but I don't want him to be president. Why is this complicated?
