Out-Gunned?

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech massacre, Charlie Gibson questioned both Clinton and Obama about why they -- and the Democratic Party -- have avoided pushing for more stringent gun control measures over the last few elections.

Clinton sought to make a third way argument that surely made her husband smile, arguing that she supports the Second Amendment while also sympathesizing with those who want to keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people.

"I respect the Second Amendment," Clinton said. "I respect the rights of lawful gun owners to own guns and use their guns. Most lawful gun owners also want to be sure we keep those guns out of the wrong hands."

Obama, surely cognizant of the danger of the question given his San Francisco "bitter" and "cling" comments, sought to downplay his past support for stringent gun control measures.

"As a general principle I believe the Constitution confers an individual right to bear arms," Obama said. Pushed by George Stephanapoulos concerning his support for a total gun ban on a 1996 questionnaire, Obama said he had never supported such a proposal and quickly switched to the core message of his campaign: "We have to get beyond the politics of this issue and figure out what is working."

Neither candidate was willing to prolong the discussion, as they had done in responding to questions on Iraq and the economy -- a signal that gun control is a stone-cold loser for Democrats in a presidential race.

A canidate's view on the Second Amendment speaks volumes about their views on the rest of the Bill Of Rights. If a canidate doesn't respect the Second Amendment he or she will not respect the other nine amendments in the Bill Of Rights.

It is of the utmost of importance to pin down a canidate to express his or her TRUE beleives.

Any canidate that beleives that the Constitution is a "living document" or that their is room to "interpert" anything written in the original Bill Of Rights does not deserve consideration, much less our vote.

How has he moderated his stance on banning guns when he supports the DC gun ban?

This is the man who is going to try and carry VA, CO and the midwest/southwest with this record. When caught, he misleads just like a standard politician (i.e. only did 5 hours of work for Rezko).

I am very pro-gun so I don't say this lightly but I think there are more important issues in this election than guns, namely Iraq and the economy. It's upsetting to me that energy independence is not a bigger issue in this election. Most people will end up pouring their $600 rebate into their gas tank to make people who don't really like us richer.

Obama "came under withering attack" for his "refusal to wear a flag lapel".

That says it all about the sorry state of America today.

Wave the flag while you tear up the Constitution!

Samuel Johnson said that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Guess he saw Hillary coming from three centuries off.

This is my first time EVER to write a comment so bear with me please!!
I will never watch either George or Charlie again.. I was agast at their unprofessional questions, and rediculous rhetoric.. ABC was shamed by these two and it will not be forgiven- I'll stick to the cable news networks, thanks anyway..

An excerpt from a Philadelphia reporter who was outraged about the Got-Cha politics played by George & Charles!

http://www.philly.com/...

Excerpt

It's hard to know where to begin with this, less than an hour after you signed off from your Democratic presidential debate here in my hometown of Philadelphia, a televised train wreck that my friend and colleague Greg Mitchell has already called, quite accurately, "a shameful night for the U.S. media." It's hard because -- like many other Americans -- I am still angry at what I just witnesses, so angry that it's hard to even type accurately because my hands are shaking. Look, I know that "media criticism" -- especially when it's one journalist speaking to another -- tends to be a genteel, colleagial thing, but there's no genteel way to say this.

You implied throughout the broadcast that you wanted to reflect the concerns of voters in Pennsylvania. You asked virtually nothing that reflected our everyday issues -- trying to fill our gas tanks and save for college at the same time, our crumbling bridges and inadequate mass transit, or the root causes of crime here in Philadelphia. In fact, there almost isn't enough space -- and this is cyberspace, where room is unlimited -- to list all the things you could have asked about but did not, from health care to climate change to alternative energy to our policy toward China to the deterioration of Afghanistan to veterans' benefits to improving education.

You ignored virtually everything that just happened in what most historians agree is one of the worst presidencies in American history, including the condoning of torture and the trashing of the Constitution, although to be fair you also ignored the policy concerns of people on the right, like immigration issues.

Obama's answer was incomprehensible. He lied about the gun questionnaire. I think he lies, when he stutters.

He is weak.

ABC sucks at Debates especially thoses with Clinton-Hitman Stephanopoulos

Posted by: sjxylib | April 16, 2008 10:38 PM

That was the worst debate of them all. Ask a bunch of stupid questions up top, and then bore us to tears with generic policy questions later.

My takeaway is that Stephy is a twit and Charlie is an ass. That sort of idiocy is why so many people don't bother with broadcast media anymore.

Posted by: novamatt | April 16, 2008 10:12 PM

Now I remember why I don't bother to watch ABC news. The first half of the so-called debate was spent on DISTRACTIONS! On distractions that have already been handled by both candidates. Whatever Charlie and Georgie thought they had setup, it was surely not a debate.

Move on. It's over anyway. And even Hillary told her fans to vote for Obama in the general election. Now we get to see whether or not her fans believe in her "wisdom" or not.

Gun control has become a code word for all things ultra-conservatives hate about Libruls. The wing nuts are certain they will one day have to defend their property and families against a central government gone nuts. And what better way to do that than with the cache of firearms that every loyal patriot has in his or her home? I don't know. Lately I have my doubts about our central government. It could well go nuts and turn USA into a police state. But, would a well-armed citizenry be capable of driving off the most expensively maintained military establishment ever organized? The alternative to gun control is the free-for-all we got now. Any enterprising criminal has a right to bear arms against the clients he wants to victimize. Tough noogies, victims.

It's not a good issue, but at least it's an issue. Over half of this debate was devoted to manufactured scandals and media nitpicking over nothing

Posted by: corinthian | April 16, 2008 9:57 PM

Yes, he's pro-gun. Each registered member of the (Democratic Party and) militia can own a flintlock rifle. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. Obama is going to be crucified this Fall.

Posted by: Laughable | April 16, 2008 9:54 PM

Thank God!!! It's over. I learned nothing of substance. The American People are bitter and dumber for listening to such drivel. Thanks ABC

Posted by: Cameron | April 16, 2008 9:54 PM

Doh!!! Forgot about that survey. (Let's move on to the next question, please).

Posted by: Charlton Heston | April 16, 2008 9:52 PM

Wrong again Chris. Barack has moderated his position since 96, and now has a more pro-gun record than Clinton.

Posted by: HILARY08 | April 16, 2008 9:52 PM

The Elephant in the Room. What's clinging now? The wedgies you both just developed thinking ahead to November?

Posted by: Gun Nut | April 16, 2008 9:49 PM

Oh, terrific. Backpedaling Barack. Oh, as a general theoretical issue, I, as a Harvard lawyer, support the 2nd Amendment under most circumstances. (and forget about that total gun ban thingy). Liar.
