Clinton References RFK Assassination

UPDATE, 6:50 pm: The Sioux Falls Argus Leader executive editor Randell Beck has just released a statement in regards the controversy caused by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (N.Y.) comments about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

Here's Beck's statement:

"The context of the question and answer with Sen. Clinton was whether her continued candidacy jeopardized party unity this close to the Democratic convention. Her reference to Mr. Kennedy's assassination appeared to focus on the timeline of his primary candidacy and not the assassination itself."

ORIGINAL POST

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), already a longshot for her party's presidential nod, may have unwittingly lengthened the odds of her nomination by referencing the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in seeking to answer a question about why so many people are calling for her to leave the race.

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?," Clinton said in explaining why she remained in the race to the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Argus Leader editorial board. "We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it."

What Clinton meant seems clear. Previous nomination fights have gone well into June and, therefore, there is no reason for this one to be cut short before every state has its say. (South Dakota is one of the last two states to vote, on June 3.)

Clinton later met with reporters to try to clarify her remarks, saying she only meant to make the point that that it's "an historic fact" that other primary campaigns have gone into June, but she voiced regret if her comments were misunderstood. She said "the Kennedys have been much on my mind in the last days" because of the diagnosis that Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has a brain tumor. Clinton said "I regret if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive."

Unfortunately for Clinton, using the RFK assassination to prove her point was -- at best -- a poorly chosen example. Many in the black community have expressed fear about the possibility of assassination as it relates to Sen. Barack Obama -- the first African-American candidate likely to be one of the major parties' nominee for president and raising the matter (in any manner) is widely regarded as poor form.

It's not the first time the shadow of assasination has been raised in the campaign.

In January during an appearance in Dover, New Hampshire, Clinton was introduced by a woman named Francine Torge who said the following, according to the New York Times' "Caucus" blog: "Some people compare one of the other candidates to John F. Kennedy. But he was assassinated. And Lyndon Baines Johnson was the one who actually" passed landmark civil rights legislation. The Clinton campaign called those comments "totally inappropriate."

More recently, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) -- after his speech to the National Rifle Association was interrupted by a noise from off stage -- joked: "That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he -- he dove for the floor." Huckabee quickly apologized for the remark.

Political assassination is a very real and dark part of our story. All of the candidates as well as the President are vulnerable. The Pope-mobile was not created for show either. I think we can all agree that bringing it into mass media could be dangerous for any significant public figure. The outrage that so many of you are ridiculing is very real and valid. There might not have been such an uproar if there hadn't been a string of references to the assassination of Barack Obama in the last few weeks. Coming on the tails of the outrageous joke from Huckabee and the Roswell publication showing Barack in the cross-hairs of a rifle scope, Hillary's remark was a last straw.

To denigrate the understandable paranoia of the African American and civil rights activist community is just another way of de-legitimizing their support of Obama. When you face the fact that so many of their prominent champions have been gunned down, it is hard to question why we would be sensitive to this kind of talk. RFK was a stalwart defender of civil rights and had a huge following of African Americans and to bring up his assassination was clearly going to alarm us.

With Hillary's huge reliance on pollsters, it could be nothing less than suspicious that her original reference to the assassination in March came four days after a poll was released that 59% of American's were worried about Obama's safety. Add that to the fact that her argument was illogical since Bill Clinton's campaign had wrapped up the nomination by April (according to Bill himself in his autobiography) and that Bobby had entered the primary race late and had only been campaigning for about 6 weeks when he was assassinated, and it seems pretty clear to me that her intention was to play on people's fears for Obama.

In New Mexico, a daughter says she persuaded her mother to still vote for Mr. Obama, even though the mother feared that winning would put him in danger. And at a rally here, a woman expressed worries that a message of hope and change, in addition to his race, made him more vulnerable to violence.

"I've got the best protection in the world," Mr. Obama, of Illinois, said in an interview, reprising a line he tells supporters who raise the issue with him. "So stop worrying."

Yet worry they do, with the spring of 1968 seared into their memories, when the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Senator Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated in a span of two months.

Mr. Obama was 6 at the time, and like many of his admirers, he has only read about the violence that traumatized the nation. But those recollections and images are often invoked by older voters, who watch his candidacy with fascination, as well as an uneasy air of apprehension, as Democrats inch closer to selecting their nominee.

Mr. Obama has had Secret Service agents surrounding him since May 3, the earliest a candidate has ever been provided protection. (He reluctantly gave in to the insistent urging of Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, and others in Congress.) As his rallies have swelled in size, his security has increased, coming close to rivaling that given to a sitting president.

His wife, Michelle Obama, voiced concerns about his safety before he was elected to the Senate. Three years ago, she said she dreaded the day her husband received Secret Service protection, because it would mean serious threats had been made against him.

Among friends and advisers, danger is something Mr. Obama rarely mentions.

"It's not something that I'm spending time thinking about day to day," said Mr. Obama, who has been given the Secret Service nickname Renegade, a way for agents to quickly identify him. "I made a decision to get into this race. I think anybody who decides to run for president recognizes that there are some risks involved, just like there are risks in anything."

Not long ago, his advisers worried that some black voters might not support his candidacy out of a fierce desire to protect him. It was a particular concern in South Carolina, but Mr. Obama said he believed the worry was also rooted in "a fear of failure."

Now that he has won a string of primaries and caucuses in all corners of the country, and built a coalition of black and white voters, failure would seem to be less of an issue. The fears, however, remain.

Representative Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, raised concerns in a letter in January to officials who oversee the Secret Service. While Mr. Obama was already receiving protection, Mr. Thompson said that the intense interest in the election prompted him to make sure that Mr. Obama and the other candidates were offered adequate security.

"The national and international profile of Senator Barack Obama gives rise to unique challenges that merit special concern," Mr. Thompson wrote. "As an African-American who was witness to some of this nation's most shameful days during the civil rights movement, I know personally that the hatred of some of our fellow citizens can lead to heinous acts of violence. We need only to look to the assassinations of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and 1968 presidential candidate Robert Kennedy as examples."

In an interview, Mr. Thompson declined to elaborate on any specific threats that had come to the attention of his committee or authorities. He said he wrote the letter to the Homeland Security Department without discussing it with Mr. Obama, whom he has endorsed.

"His candidacy is so unique to this country and so important that the last thing you would want is for him not to have the opportunity to fulfill the role of a potential presidential nominee," Mr. Thompson said. "It's out of an abundance of caution that I wrote the letter, rather than keep our fingers crossed and pray."

Before Mr. Obama decided to run for president, he discussed his safety with his family. His campaign employed a team of private security guards before he was placed under Secret Service protection. Since then, he has grown fond of the agents who surround him, inviting them to watch the Super Bowl at his home in Chicago and playing basketball with them on the days he awaits the results of an election.

Mr. Obama was reticent in speaking about his security or the period in American history that is often raised -- without prompting -- by voters who are interviewed at campaign events. Mentions of the fate that befell President John F. Kennedy and Senator Kennedy only increased after Mr. Obama was joined on the campaign trail by Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts.

"I'm pretty familiar with the history," Mr. Obama said. "Obviously, it was an incredible national trauma, but neither Bobby Kennedy nor Martin Luther King had Secret Service protection."

Indeed, the assassination of Senator Kennedy in 1968 prompted Congress to authorize protection of major presidential and vice presidential candidates. In this campaign, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has had Secret Service protection from the beginning, because she is a former first lady. None of the other candidates had protection during their primary campaigns.

We refuse to unite the democratic party after the RACIST campaign that Obama has run.

After you view that youtube video made by the major networks, you will clearly see my point

Obama has been running a RACIST campaign

After pulling that crap, you now expect to unite the democratic party ?

ARE YOU COMPLETELY OUT OF YOUR MIND ????

OBAMA has torn this party apart with his own actions which make him a FRAUD against his own campaign theme.

Take that to Denver.

- - from the Huff Post
"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out.
She has a point: June is a great month for political assassinations.

Why drop out of the race before all the assassins have had their say?

After all, we know Barack Obama has received multiple death threats -- because he is black, of course, and because some of our fellow citizens think he's a secret Muslim terrorist who is going to take the oath of office on the Koran and make us all pray to Mecca five times a day with that screechy music coming over the loudspeakers(?) and then he'll crash Air Force One into the White House(?) and force our wives to wear those Muslim beekeeper helmets(?).
And the truth is, Obama has consistently failed to win over those voters who want to see him murdered.
And the truth is, Obama has consistently failed to win over those voters who want to see him murdered.
So Hillary IS HANGING AROUND TO SEE IF OBAMA GETS MURDERED, JUST - IN - CASE !!!!!!!!!!!
IMAGINE if OBAMA had said something like this - - IT WOULD BE ALL OVER THE MSM 24/7 for MONTHS !!!!!!
NO MATTER HOW MUCH HRC and her depraved supporters want to SPIN this - - - "HILLARY IS HOPING FOR A JUNE ASSASSINATION, IN ORDER TO - - - " you know the rest.
Time and again SHE HAS SHOWN HER TRUE 'UGLY / EVIL' SIDE; I will NEVER vote for this P-S-Y-C-H-O-P-A-T-H !!
HILLARY, THIS TIME YOU HAVE REALLY OUTDONE YOURSELF - - EVER CONSIDERED JOINING THE M-A-F-I-A ??!!

Some Democrats have mentioned that she could run for governor of New York if she isn't nominated for president.

That prospect unnerves some black leaders. They said they didn't want to see her challenge Paterson, who plans to run in 2010. With Paterson in the job, some black leaders want a definitive statement from Clinton that she would not subject him to a primary challenge -- and say they haven't gotten it yet.

Benjamin said: "I was pretty much appalled when supporters said one of her options was to run for governor. We have a governor. He's a black Democrat. It's not wise for them to challenge a black Democrat for governor.

"She should have come out and said a flat no, that folks were wrong, but I did not see that or hear that coming from her."

How Clinton's Comments Didn't -- Then Did -- Catch Fire
Matt Phillips reports on the presidential race from Brandon, S.D

Unfortunately, as sometimes happens out on the trail, the local technology infrastructure didn't seem quite ready for an influx of heavily wired journalists. Some reporters found the streamed broadcast of the editorial meeting excruciatingly slow, rendering it unwatchable. It didn't seem that there would be any huge news out of a routine sitdown with the editors of a small-town daily, besides her batting away earlier reports that day that she was seeking to reach a deal with Obama's campaign as way to exit the nomination race. She did, in fact, tell the editorial board that those reports were "flatly untrue... flatly, completely untrue."

Clinton concluded her meeting at the Argus Leader and arrived at the supermarket, where a few hundred onlookers assembled in the produce section, when the RFK comments began to reverberate around the Internet.

As the New York senator was delivering her stump speech in the grocery store, reporters began receiving messages on their BlackBerrys from editors wondering about a New York Post story posted prominently on the Drudge Report that referenced the senator's mention of the assassination.

The bulk of the press corps soon gathered around a Clinton spokesman asking for comments and clarification on the Kennedy quotes. Seemingly taken aback by the direction the questions were going, the spokesman explained that Clinton had merely been trying to emphasize the point that Democratic primary fights had stretched into June in the past.

Later Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee offered an official statement, saying "any reading into it beyond that is inaccurate." After a few more minutes he came back, suggesting that his quote should be amended to add "and outrageous."

After finishing her appearance, Clinton herself returned to offer her own brief apology for the remarks.

Clinton aides pointed to the fact that she had made previous references to both her husband's 1992 campaign and Kennedy's 1968 campaign before to stress that these primary fights have pushed into June in the past. The Associated Press cited a March interview with Time magazine, in which she said, "Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June, also in California. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual."

And while a couple reporters -- who had managed to stick with the streaming press conference -- mentioned that they found her assassination reference slightly strange, few on the trail thought it would be the lead on any of their stories that day.

The fact that it did become big news is illustrative of journalistic competition in the Internet age. The entire pack of reporters sent to watch Clinton's every move had somehow gotten beat, and forced into following a New York Post reporter who was nowhere near the campaign, but who, apparently, had a much-better Internet connection.

ABC News, it's Senator Obama's campaign that has pushed and framed this story.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Sen. Dick Durbin also weighed in, telling the Associated Press: "I know Hillary Clinton, and the last thing in the world she'd ever want is to wish misfortune on anybody. She and Barack are friends." He added: "It was ... a careless remark, and we'll leave it at that.

nOT EVER GOING TO BE AN OBAMA ZOMBIE:
You know that your post is going exactly against the point you're trying to make. For the most part, Obama has acted like a gentleman during this primary. Yes he did respond during the course and I'm sorry if you don't like that but the majority of people believe that HRC has behaved shamefully throughout this election. If Obama had not reacted quickly and surely to her "kitchen sink" strategy which was full of lies and deceit, he would have been branded as weak like John Kerry was four years ago.

How about you read his statements he made today, he could have easily thrown her under the bus but he lent a helping hand.

The man acts with class, no he's not perfect but at least he has some dignity unlike your candidate and unlike your statements reveal.

I think I get it now...

Before in her March TIME interview she said,

"Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual."

There are two important points here:

1: Clinton clearly is making a statement regarding the primary contest going through June is not unusual.

2: Clinton has made this statement before, and there appeared to be no "backlash" or misunderstanding. Therefore, I think this was a shock to her that this "vetted" statement, explaining why she will not quit until the primaries are over, was taken so differently this time by the press.

But the voices for her to be VP were getting stronger and this "interpretation" conveniently quieted those voices...

Chris,
Maybe you should report on these two statements both here and when you go on Hardball. And please, don't let them interrupt you so much on Hardball.

Thank for your post.

I hope the Obama campaign
flesh-eating Zombies, the media, including Msnbc Oberman and Mathews, will stop eating on the flesh of Hillary and Bill and their own Democratic party members. If the cannibalism doesn't stop soon or the will be nothing left of the party!

Senator Barack Obama:
"I have learned that when you are campaigning for as many months as Sen. Clinton and I have been campaigning," he told the Puerto Rico radio station Isla, "sometimes you get careless in terms of the statements that you make. And I think that is what happened here.

"Sen. Clinton says that she did not intend any offense by it," he added, "and I would take her at her word on that."

This gesture has been typical of Obama during this campaign, the man has class.

You know, you all like to refer to Obama supporters as Kool aid drinking.. The fact is it is the Clinton supporters who are the Kool aid drinkers as they follow this pied piper Hillary Clinton with her lies fed to them like honey. Funny thing is, hers is the only supporters dumb enough to swallow it. She knows who she is talking to and they eat her S**t like it's Oreo cookies. It is sad we live in a country with such an availability to information and such a large number are still able to be lead around like sheep with lies, lies. Smarten up.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 24, 2008 7:35 PM

Factually accurate? Bill Clinton had it wrapped up in April and the Bobby Kennedy primary had a different schedule way back then and June in 1968 and June 2008 don;t relate to each other. If you are going to pose an argument at least have the brains to know what you are talking about beyond the blind parroting of the lies you are fed by the consummate lier Hillary Clinton. I suppose you still believe she was under sniper fire.

It is correct that Senator Clinton's remarks about "it ain't over till it's over" are correct inasmuch as saying that Senator Bobby Kennedy was assasinated in June was only a remark referencing time passed.
What is much more remarkable is that since about 15 years ago I have noticed that President Kennedy's, Rev King's and Senator Bobby Kennedy's assasinations are not mentioned in most This Day in History newspaper columns. Further the Kennedy's stopped making any noted visit's to Arlington National Cemetary a long time ago where the Enternal Flame lights our way as USAmericans.

Demand To DNC: Kick Hillary Out NOW !
Insinuates That Obama Could Be ASSASSINATED !

Now, things have gone way too far. Yesterday, in an appearance in South Dakota, Hillary Clinton justified her reason for staying in the campaign by referring to the fact that presidential hopeful 'Robert Kennedy was assasinated in June'...implying that the same could occur to Senator Obama. THIS IS SICK !!! Regardless of how the pundits try to spin this as just another misspeak, the statement speaks for itself and displays the diobolical mentality of Hillary Clinton.

It is unclear as to whether she is actually hoping that Obama would be killed, therefore giving her an open path to the Democratic nomination, or if she may be signaling her desire to some sick, warp minded homicidal maniac. Whichever be the case, her statement is automatic grounds for the Democratic National Committee headed by Howard Dean to demand that she remove herself from the race. If he does not, American Democrats should demand HIS stepping down !

This can not be tolerated!!! Regardless of who you are a supporter of, Hillary, Obama or McCain, ANYONE who would wish the death of another human being in order to win a political position is sick, dangerous, maniacal, deranged and totally mentally and morally unfit for any political position, particularly President or V.P. of the United States.

Posted by: thuff7 | May 24, 2008 6:49 PM

Citing RFK's 1968 primary as a reason to stay in the race does not make any sense, because in 1968 the Democrats LOST the general election to Richard Nixon.

Senator Clinton's comment had no legitimate justification whatsoever.

The comment was particularly inappropriate considering the recent news concerning Sen. Ted Kennedy's health.

Expressing "regret" is not enough. This calls for a clear apology.

Aussie view said:

"I think her comment was unfortunate but by no means intended to be anything but a reference to the length of the primary process. And I realise that she can, at times, be cold, calculating and even untruthful. But here I just think she innocently screwed up."

Nicely put, and I agree with you. I genuinely believe this was a gaffe and nothing more malicious -- and this is coming from someone who has supported Sen. Obama since January. Although I do not believe Sen. Clinton's remarks were at all thought through nor her apology adequate, I equally do not believe she is hoping for any assassination attempts.

What I think this incident should demonstrate to voters more than anything else is that Sen. Clinton is starting to break under the pressure as she grasps at straws in what most likely will be the final weeks of her candidacy. If she cannot withstand the pressures of the campaign trail without committing gaffes this severe, how is she supposed to withstand the pressures of the highest public office in the United States?

Again, I am sure her comment did not come out sounding the way she meant it, but Sen. Clinton would not have made such an egregious blunder in the early days of her campaign, and her loss of focus on the issues in her most recent speeches in conjunction with this offensive and well-publicized gaffe seems to indicate that she might not have the fortitude and wherewithal to run a successful Presidential administration.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Hillary Clintons mental state is in question. If there is to be any further consideration of her for any post be it VP or SC or even remain as a U.S. senator there needs to be some kind of mental evaluation. Her actions are not adding up anymore and it is beyond her just being tired or misspeaking. There is something wrong with this woman.

Prisoners in concentration camps during WWII were exposed to so much violence and ruthless behavior that they became numb and unresponsive to it. There are even reports of prisoners being grateful that their violent experiences were not as violent as they could have been. The responses of the Clinton's support base remind me of that phenomena. They have become so numbed by the clinton's tactics that they fail to see the inhuman nature of them. This is unforgivable.

It doesn't matter if you like Obama or Mccain, it is very clear Hillary is not qualified nor fit to be our president and represent our country.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 24, 2008 4:28 PM

There was absolutely no reason to invoke election years in which huge primaries such as New Jersey, Ohio, and California were held in June as a reason for her to continue in this divisive campaign bid. Her excuse of historical precedent defies belief.

To use the words that she did as rationale for continuing was no accident; she is hoping that newspaper editors will endorse her continued campaign as necessary backup for the vulnerable Obama.

She is a cold, calculating, desperate woman.

What is most disturbing is her consistent dismissing genuine voter concerns regarding uniting our party then citing as her primary reason now for staying in it is "Kennedy was assassinated in June" Her callous thoughtless remarks are only topped by her dispassionate remorse that she may have inadvertently offended someone.

Many are claiming Hillary was just trying to say that primaries can sometimes last until June, such as Bill's in 1992 and Robert Kennedy's in 1968.

Then please explain how this Yale educated lawyer and disciplined politician with 35 years of experience didn't say just that? It's rather simple:

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? And Bobby Kennedy didn't win the nomination in California till June either."

If this had been the first time she said this, she might have been given the benefit of a doubt. But as she said essentially the same thing in March in a Time interview and has referenced modern political assassinations on at least two other occasions when citing her reasons for continuing her campaign, this is now a theme.

Why can't she simply say what she means? Why would she invoke such a loaded word as "assassination" at all?

Her explanation was also illogical. "The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy..." How does this explain making these same comments to Time Magazine, two months before Senator Kennedy's illness was diagnosed? She also "misspoke" regarding her husband's 1992 campaign. He had wrapped up his nomination long before June of that year.

Our nation has its first viable black candidate. Worry for his safety is already an issue. He began receiving death threats as soon as he announced he was running and was given secret service protection early on. As a former first lady with secret service protection for herself, husband and daughter, Hillary is well aware of the dangers associated with the presidency.

You don't scream FIRE in a theater. You don't say the words BOMB or HIJACK on an airplane. And Hillary, a politician with a background in law, touting her decades of experience and readiness from "day one" should not repeatedly use the word ASSASSINATE in reference to why she is continuing her campaign.

Many of her campaign staff, supporters and even political pundits are saying too much is being made of this comment. I disagree.

Whatever her intentions, her comment proves without doubt that on at least four separate occasions, when asked why she was continuing her campaign, thoughts of political assassinations sprang to her mind and she spoke these thoughts aloud. That, at the very least, is disturbing. At worst, it's vile.

Posted by: DMWhipp, Florida | May 24, 2008 3:17 PM

Hillary was supposedly innocent about the hard working white people , too. She knew what she was doing. She knows she was totally wrong here, too. It was a lot worse than Huckabee's comment ---and Huckabee apologized almost immediately,TO OBAMA ina phone call, and admitted it was a stupid thing to say in jest. Hillary was serious, and apologized to the RFK family, "if anybody was offended" (some apology) and never mentioned anything about any apology to Obama or his supporters or his family. She is a clod. She deserves to be vanquished with gusto.

Today Senator Clinton made a statement in relations to previous primaries. She said that other campaigns in the past went well into the month of June and she gave examples such as the 1992 and the 1968 campaign. She said that RFK was still campaigning in June and his campaign was still going when he was assassinated.

Our supporters went online and screamed bloody murder. Some of our supporters started running like chickens without heads, yelling and screaming that Senator Clinton is staying in the campaign because Senator Obama might be assassinated, which would allow her to get the nomination.

Well, if we didn't think she was cold and calculating before, we do now.

Hillary is very intelligent - maybe her social skills need help.

Hillary has lived with the Secret Service for years and the Clintons have probably received death threats. So she should know better.

There were many more examples of a primary going into June or even August, BUT she didn't bring those up - she said the "assassination" word.

One needs to question her judgement.

I believe that Hillary's repeated references to assassination are just a slip of the tongue--a slip that reveals her fervent dream that something cataclysmic will propel her into the presidency.

Until yesterday I thought Hillary would be a wonderful choice to fill the next opening on the Supreme Court. There the things that have so turned me off to her--excessive pandering and the prospect of having Bill (who I used to respect) loose in the White House--would no longer matter. Her assassination comment has quashed my enthusiasm.

For the record, I'm a white over 60 female who would love to see a woman president. Just not Hillary.

Just as an observation, the most sensible and rational comment I've seen on this issue forms the 'led graf' of a Post story this morning:

"Smart candidates don't invoke the possibility of their opponents being killed.
This seems so obvious it shouldn't need to be said, but apparently, it needs to be said."

Side note to Chris C: too bad the comments section of The Fix has degraded so much over the last few months. It's become essentially useless to anyone actually interested in the theory and practice of politics (since it now consists of 70% Clinton Crazies vehemently spouting the same tired talking points and scurrilous untruths; and 25% Obama Crazies vehemently spouting the same tired talking points and scurrilous untruths).

It's simply not worth it to wade though the dreck to find the remaining 5% of actual content (and thanks for sticking around blarg and bsimon--you're a substantial portion of that last 5%).

The regulars who made it worthwhile have pretty much abandoned this forum, and I'm saying goodbye now too. Will check back after the conventions... maybe the reintroduction of actual policy differences will prompt a recovery.

To all you Weakest Links out there......Goodbye

One more indication of Hillary's blind ambition that she cannot even understand that she lost and not hurt the party anymore. She is despicable!

Posted by: vge | May 24, 2008 12:57 PM

This egregiously tone-deaf remark, judging from previous remarks of a similar nature that Hillary has made, was a hitherto scripted rationale for staying in this race beyond the point of no return. I find this fact even more deeply offensive than if it had been an off-the-cuff gaff that was clearly unintentional (if not wishful) in nature. Hillary Clinton is obviously NOT the kind of clear-thinking, high-minded leader we thought she was (or could be). I'm disgusted to the point of revulsion. She needs to go into treatment NOW. The sooner the better. And, as a proud feminist, I think I can say this without Howard Wolfson or Geraldine Ferraro accusing me of sexism. Or can I?

Posted by: Patricia Miller | May 24, 2008 12:55 PM

Just reverse the characters in this scenario and the Clinton storm-troopers would haul Obama off to jail.

Guess who's filling in for Sen. Ted Kennedy at the Wesleyan University commencement ceremony as speaker? I would think that Sen. Clinton would be the choice since she is so proud to occupy RFKs seat, How ironic.

Why is it when Hillary "misspeaks" on a grand scale more than once, instead of trying to defend her, there are some morons who try and switch this to make it an "Obama" problem. To me this makes the "reverend" issue pale in comparison. She also needs apologize to "Obama" and his family. I see a pattern here. She "misspeaks", but she gives a half a$$ non apology. She will never give an apology, and I have never heard her give one. Even McCain gets nailed when he screws up, but Hillory starts crying foul and everyone is picking on her because she is a woman. And there are people that want this to be your commander in chief. She was waiting for something to happen, and it did, she f u c ked up. It's time for the rest of the super delegates to step up and end this nightmare.

37th&OStreet by your multiple incessant posts I can only conclude that you border on the obsessive and therefore don't accurately reflect Hillary's supporters, just the lunatic fringe.

Posted by: JR | May 24, 2008 12:26 PM

All the way back when she was first lady old school friends often talked about what a story teller she was. A nice way to say lier. She can't even tell the truth about things that can be researched. Lying is such a pert of her back to when she was even a little girl is is almost psychotic. How in the world can she be qualified as a world leader. She is at best a little sick in the head at worst mental unbalanced. She can not tell the difference between something that really happened and something she made up.

For those of you wanting to give Hillary a pass for uttering the "A" word, there's this....

In Bill Clinton's autobiography "My Life" he said on page 407 that he had the nomination wrapped up by April 7, 1992. Not June. The "historical fact" is that for Hillary there are no "facts" only twisted logic in order to further her ambitions.

The NY Times this morning said in their article about the remark that Bill was viewed as having the nomination secured in March.

Another blogger summarized what she meant best:
"Sure is a nice nominee you got there. It'd be a shame if anything...BAD were to happen to him."

Posted by: Hacbarton | May 24, 2008 12:12 PM

This is unbelieveable! You people must be stark, raving mad! You think it's perfectly alright to take a simple statement about the historical length of primaries, one where a great tragedy was revisited in the most polite manner, and try to turn it into a threat against a candidate. But it's NOT alright! It's utterly low class and tacky. It's completely unacceptable!

You people are complete and total sheep, lemmings!

Talk about divisive and undemocratic. My God! I can't believe the audacity of the press, though I should be able to by now. Nor can I believe the audacity of you Obamabots! You call THIS utter garbage and poison you spew part of your audacity of hope? I pity you, I truly do.

Superdelegates:

What in God's name are you waiting for? How many more below-the-waterline torpedoes does this woman have to launch on the likely nominee's ship before you step in and escort her off the scene?

There has been a lot of talk over the months about what your role is. THIS is what your role is. Get off your asses and save the party while there's (possibly) still time.

(And as for those Clinton operatives and supporters who are trying to blackmail Obama into choosing Hillary as his VP candidate, implying that her supporters will sit on the sidelines unless he does, all I can say is that this is the height of irresponsibility -- but, regrettably, totally consistent with the conduct of her campaign to date: say and do whatever you have to, even when the game is all but over, regardless of the effect on the party's chances in November.)

Posted by: jac13 | May 24, 2008 12:09 PM

I am a 61 year old feminist liberal democrat. This is the party of my father who disavolved me because I voted for Anderson. THis is the last straw for democrats. We will NOT win in November. It's a shame, we had our chance but we left it in the hands of Hilliary. She has broken the party and my belief in the democratic party. Not in my name or in my father's name will I not say something. Hilliary has lost her way and we will suffer for it. Shame on democrats for allowing this to happen to America.

"but it is idicative of what is sloshing around inside her head."
Lettherdrinkcrownroyal

I think it has sloshed around in everybody's head BUT for the opponent who virtually has no chance to win to announce it publicly on camera is inexplicably coarse AND idiotic.

"These people CLEARLY twist Hillary's words around.."
(37th&OSt.)
I agree that some people have twisted her words in this instance to address their most inner fears but AT BEST it was very un-presidential and showed a lack of intellect (or exhaustion) and at worst borders on criminal.

It's her response that I am most repulsed by. The one behind in the race does not bring up the specter of assassination at the end of a long battle to a man who gets death threats every day and expect there to not be a negative reaction.

Furthermore, she hasn't apologized to Obama, and probably won't.

Where is her sense of dignity?

37th&OStreet: How does your post have anything to do with this topic or are you doing the dance called the "Hillary blame-shift"?

Posted by: JR | May 24, 2008 11:40 AM

I'm an Obama supporter, and I don't think that Hillary Clinton was trying to say that should Barack get assassinated, she would be waiting in the wings...

I believe that she was talking about the length of the primaries, and the reason she had to use the us that as an example was because she couldn't have used the 1980 campaigns of Kennedy and Carter, another long-running primary, because the length of that primary weakened Carter, and caused him to lose.

What I don't like, however, is the fact that Hillary has not apologized to the Obama family. Barack is the father of two young children... this kind of talk must be very hurtful.

It was only recently that Hillary would congratulate Obama on his primary wins.

I think this shows a lack of class.

Posted by: barackoblogger | May 24, 2008 11:37 AM

This just reinforces the notion that the Clintons will say and do anything to win. While I admired their tenancity and edurance to withstand one political assault after another from the right in the past as well as for their political positions, I for one am just so done with the Clintons. I would like to see a woman president some day, but not one named Clinton.

Posted by: majacque | May 24, 2008 11:37 AM

JR====+++++Yes you may be right, it may have been just a poor word choice, but it is idicative of what is sloshing around inside her head. At best she is a cold , calculating clod.

"From a real newspaper, the NY Times"

Yeah, I used to think the same thing, I'm from N.Y. and always held the NYT as the gold-standard in journalism, until after reading story after story that blatantly favored Clinton and dogged Obama.

The NYT is NOTHING but a shill for Sen. Clinton.

Objective Journalism is dead.

Posted by: JR | May 24, 2008 11:32 AM

Hillary has been citing "that gaff that knocks someone out of the presidential race". I think we just experienced it. She clearly is unqualified to be president. She is emotionally and morally and ethically flawed.

Posted by: LetthemdrinkCrownRoyal | May 24, 2008 11:27 AM

I dislike this Woman with the intensity of 1000 white-hot suns but I am going to cut her some slack on the COMMENT.

However, I am very disturbed with her non-apology, what she said amounted to someting like this: "IF" you were offended by what I said "THEN" I am sorry, not "My choice of words were really offensive and I am sorry, it was a mistake." She puts the onus on the receiver, not the messenger. Furthermore she did not apologize to Obama, I can understand she didn't do that because it would have been tantamount to admitting it was directed at him, but she owes him one because the man gets death threats every day.

The worst thing she has done is to set the worst standard for Women in politics, she could have made Woman proud in this race, but her behavior has been juvenile and an embarrassment to Women and the Democratic party.

Posted by: JR | May 24, 2008 11:25 AM

Hillary's remarks; did they mean that she is secretly hoping for Obama to be assasinated? Of course not! However, where there is smoke, there is fire. She has made way too many comments in the past that suggest that she is continuing in a race that most politicians would have dropped out of a long time ago just in case some cataclismic event happens to Obama. HRC supporters cannot deny that very point. Critics of this comment are not twisting her words, or trying to take advantage of this gaffe. This country's history is dark in regards to presidential assasinations and atempted assasinations. A seasoned politician running for the highest office in the land knows better than to make any comments that come close to suggesting this kind of nonsense.

Hillary should die of brain cancer and the sooner the better.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 24, 2008 11:09 AM

Two things, Bill clinton had it wrapped up in April so she is just plain lying. And when Bobby Kennedy was running they had a different schedule for the primaries and June then does not relate to June now, Lie after F**kin lie, after F**kin lie, after F**kin lie.
From this piece of S**t candidate.

Before Nazi domination and the holocaust, A. Hitler wrote against Jews and about racial cleansing in his book, "Mein Kampf", which was a best-seller in Europe. How delusional is she when she speaks of assasination, directing such speech toward her political opponent? Her campaign and her followers should be disabused of racial hate. If Americans can tolerate this kind of talk from her, could they possibly tolerate political murder anytime anywhere? Are Americans too intimidated to stop her and remove her destructive track?

There is no parsing required in this instance. She was asked why so many people are demanding that she leave the race, and her response was to provide the reasons she believes she should stay in, followed by an "I don't understand it" acknowledgement of the original question. She later restated her reasons, insisting that no one can doubt them ("It's a fact"). I take her at her word: She is staying in because RFK was assassinated in June. What bearing could something that happened in 1968 have on a contest 40 years later? Obviously, to her, a path to the nomination that the people addressed in the original question have yet to understand and acknowledge the existance of. Where others see only tragedy, she sees opportunity. Don't stop thinking about tomorrow.

"What bothers me about you personally is that you are willing to RISK THE NATIONAL SECURITY OF THIS NATION for the little paycheck that Obama is giving you.

You are like a traitor that takes money to betray his country."

Oh, if you only knew what I did for a living....

Posted by: kreuz_missile | May 24, 2008 10:13 AM

From a real newspaper, the NY Times: "Friday was not the first time Mrs. Clinton referred to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in such a context. In March, she told Time magazine: "Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual." Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has endorsed Mrs. Clinton, defended her remarks in a telephone interview on Friday evening. "I've heard her make that argument before," Mr. Kennedy said, speaking on his cellphone as he drove to the family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass. "It sounds like she was invoking a familiar historical circumstance in support of her argument for continuing her campaign."

All you bottom feeders who are trying to twist HRC's words are just scum of the earth who care nothing about RFK, just their own political agenda. It appears the Obamafools are so desperate they are in direct opposition to RFK jr. Are you going to trash RFK jr, the flesh & blood of RFK, because he disagrees with you . Obamafools think they know better than RFK's SON. How desperate and pathetic the Obamafools have become.

HE'S A RACIST RADICAL CHRISTIAN!

HE'S THE ANTI-CHRIST!

HE WON'T SALUTE THE FLAG!

Can I forward my Nigerian scam e-mails to all of you stupid people? Maybe then you won't have money to contribute to a candidate this fall (or even gas money to get to the polls in November), and we elitists can elect a president who is actually better and smarter than we are.

Posted by: flarrfan | May 24, 2008 9:43 AM

After listening to the entire Argus interview, HRC simply thinks that she is the VERY BEST CANDIDATE who EVER entered a primary. And her 'PLEDGED AGREEMENT' regarding MI/FL obviously MEANT 'NOTHING' once she realized that she COULD NOT AND WOULD NOT be the Dem nominee. Once she realized her position, she immediately DECIDED that the ONLY WAY she could STEAL this primary, she decided to MAKE A 'CRUSADE' of getting the VOTES counted NOW [AFTER THE FACT THAT SHE SIGNED THIS AGREEMENT LIKE ALL THE OTHER CANDIDATES]. IS THIS "DEMOCRATIC"? I KNOW IT IS "NOT" - IT IS DECEITFUL AND WRONG! Without FL/MI delegates being seated [AND ONLY SEATED THE WAY SHE WANTS THEM SEATED - NOT IN A 'FAIR' WAY, BUT ONLY "HER WAY"] will she agree to that seating! WHERE WAS THIS "LETS COUNT ALL THE VOTES" WHEN SHE ACTUALLY SIGNED THE AGREEMENT? WHERE WAS HER "FAIRNESS" THEN.

She KNEW she was 'INEVITABLE' and she did NOT need to worry about FL/MI because in her mind she had WON this primary! So if she NOW WANTS TO BE FAIR TO ALL THE VOTERS, why ISN'T she screaming that 'all the caucus votes' should also be counted?? I mean, if she is talking about being FAIR, THEN FAIRNESS SHOULD BE "ACROSS THE BOARD"! But NO, not with HRC. The only votes that matter are FL/MI BECAUSE THAT IS THE ONLY WAY SHE HAS OF COMING UP WITH A COUNT THAT WILL FAVOR HER! THIS IS "NOT FAIRNESS"! Ask any 5th grader - they KNOW what FAIR means!

HRC has used every ploy and dirty trick in an effort to become the Dem nominee and finally, she has gone too far! Her comments regarding RFK are dispicable since there were many other historical references she could have used instead of the assassination of RFK. This tells me what her thinking processes have come to and it is too dark to contemplate! She seems to want the POTUS more than anything in the world - there is NOT ENOUGH MONEY in the world if offered to her that she would 'accept' if given to her because this job is the ONLY thing she wants that she is NOT going to get! She can't stand even the idea that someone else has taken this away from her and especially a young Black man [BOY] - how dare he? I will show him! I will bring RACISM, BIGOTRY, and HATE into this race to take him back down to size! I will use his religion [I don't 'think' he is Muslim, you will have to ask him; you can 'chose' your pastor] and spread rumors about him that will surely bring him down! GD, I want 'my way' and I am going to have 'my way' even if I have to subliminally suggest that "assassination of others like RFK" have happened in the past so I WILL STAY IN THIS RACE! Unlike Romney who "suspended" his race, she can't do that! OMG, someone might forget if she is not in the limelight 24/7! I do believe that this reference CROSSED THE LINE and her campaign should definitely be suspended! But from what we have all seen of her, she will be standing right beside Obama as he is sworn in and state, "But, wait a minute, I'm still running"! Get a grip senator, it is over and you have NOT HELPED yourself THIS TIME; NOT THIS TIME!!!

HOW COME THERE ARE NO STORIES ABOUT OBAMA CLAIMING THEIR ARE 59 STATES. HAS ANYBODY ASKED HIM TO NAME THEM?

Obama never claimed there were 59 states. He did say ONCE that he had campaigned in 57 states. He literally misspoke. He meant to say that he had campaigned in 47 and just misread his talking point (missing MI, FL, Alaska)---50 minus 3 = 47. HRC supporters who want to talk about misspeaking really shouldn't go there.

Posted by: flarrfan | May 24, 2008 9:39 AM

BERNIE

Obama said there were 57 states - because when he was younger he went to a Muslim school and they taught him there were 57 STATES OF ISLAM. Obama basically got confused.

It's understandable, right?

Obama went to a Muslim school in Indonesia - it is about time the country hears the truth - instead of a cover-up about this simple fact.

By the way, Chris, can you check out the story that because Obama converted from Islam, devout Muslims would refuse to talk to him.

For instance, there is a story that some Saudi officials refuse to talk to Obama because he converted from the Muslim religion and somehow that is something to be shunned.

Chris, would you please look into that fur us?????

"I am ready on Day One..." is something we have heard over and over in this campaign. Senator Clinton can't have it both ways. One minute she is playing the tough, well seasoned political feminist and the next she is playing the pathetic, tired misspoken female. She would never wish harm to Senator Obama, but she does wish that all left to vote in this primary will think about that possibility therefore increasing her necessity to remain waiting in the wings. There are too many similarities between the movement of Senator Kennedy in 1968 and Senator Obama. There were many other examples of history she could have used to make the point I too believe she really wanted to make. She used Robert Kennedy's tragedy in a calculated way to plant a seed in the minds of all listening. Just as she did with the sniper incident, hard working white people incident, etc...Senator Clint
