FixCam: Campaign Jingles!

Note: Please upgrade your Flash plug-in to view our enhanced content.

The Fix has long been obsessed with campaign jingles.

Derided by many as "too light" for the serious business of politics, the reality is that campaign jingles have been used time and time again to sell a message or drive home an idea that might not have worked in a 30-second television ad or a speech by the candidate.

Examples abound from Sen. John Kennedy's repetitive but effective jingle during the 1960 presidential campaign to Mabel Lopp's ditty for Sen. Paul Coverdell (R-Ga.) in 1992 to the 2006 "write-in" jingle for Rep.Charlie Wilson (D-Ohio).

Those are a few of the campaign jingles that jumped immediately to The Fix's mind, but there are SO MANY others.

Always had a particular jingle that stuck in your head from a campaign past? Now is your chance. Use the comments section below to offer your own take on the most memorable campaign jingles. We'll monitor the comments section and try to pluck out the most commonly named jingles.

Have at it!

Oh, and for Kennedy's commercial, notice how once the jingle ends, all that's left is a picture of John, Jackie, and baby Caroline. It's like he's saying "I'm better looking than you, and my wife is better looking than yours, so I can steal your wife, but why would I want to, so vote for me."

Yea, I really just want a friggin t-shirt.

Some comments:

1. The "I Like Ike" commercial was supposedly produced by Roy O. Disney, the business genius behind Walt's creative genius, and the commercial does show a Disney brand of animation.

2. The Kennedy jingle really has some good lines:

"A man who's old enough to know, and young enough to do."

and

"Do you deny to any man the right he's guaranteed? To be elected President no matter what his creed. It's promised in the Bill of Rights to which we must be true..."

That third stanza is pretty heavy for a jingle. The commercial actually shows an Israeli flag as well as FDR during these lines!

Plus the commercial shows Bobby a few times too!

A 2006 Classic "Vote For Ms. Angela"

http://voteformissangela.com/missangelasrap.aspx

It's really a full song, but the opening would have been great as a jingle.

In 2000, The Michigan Democratic Party decided to take on the conservatives on the state supreme court Justices Markman, Taylor, and Young who were up for re-election. They flooded the state with negative ads playing on the Wizard of Oz "Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my!" with ads about Markman and Taylor and Young oh my!. They were so effective that Markman, Taylor, and Young won overwhelmingly because they had the highest name recognition in a category that very few people pay attention to.

The "I Like Ike" jingle is unbelievably infectious, and was written by Irving Berlin (about the last tune he did).

Best political campaign jingle ever:

c'mon you guys, it's "The MTA".

The best campaign song of the year that captures the spirit of the Obama campaign without doubt is "Pennsylvania Avenue" by X-Patriate, from "Greetings From Lafayette Park" (huge on ITunes now, and also has a great White House/Abbey Road photo):

Pennsylvania Avenue:

Silly little girl makes a video
Tilts her head so cute and tired
As the steam rises from the grates

And outside the Big House
The reporters scatter round
Like packs of nervous birds
Behind the steely gates

And let the steam rise up
And let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Let the steam rise up
And let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

The young debark at Union Station
New suits and bright eyes
And a gleam to aspire
And/or to acquire

And the elders on the street
Watch the town cars in their fleet
Pass to use the last of them
'Fore they expire

And let the steam rise up
And let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Let the steam rise up
And let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Chipped paint on historic slum
A drum beat
So short so sweet
The hunger for a dance that will feel new

But the trend that brings them here
Is to be a part of History
Which means all will be the same
When they are through

But let the steam rise up
Let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Let the steam rise up
Let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Lighting flash above the dome
It lights the homes upon the Hill
Just for a moment a stop
A shock a sign

And for that moment all are still
As they hesitate to find the will
To rise above the guise of love
While there is time

And let the steam rise up
Let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Let the steam rise up
And let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Silly little girl makes a video
I watch it from my bed
As the light streams in
Between the monument and the grey

As the vendors, tenders
Menders, benders
Spenders and amenders
All rise to seek the hope within a brand new day

And let the steam rise up
Let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

Let the steam rise up
And let the people wise up
As I drive down Pennsylvania Avenue

As I ride down Pennsylvania Avenue
As I rise up Pennsylvania Avenue

I've seen the Fix... On my PC
He's on TV... On 'NBC
Can he be... A good VP?
Can he be... A good VP?

Does Barack need... a Fix (VP)?
Does McCain need... a Fix (VP)?
Hill'ry can't be... Fixed (sez me),
Ron Paul can't be... Fixed (sez me)

___WaPo can't spare him...
___Matthews can't dare him...
___O'Reilly don't go n'ar him...
___Ms. Fix ensnared him...

I've seen the Fix... on my PC
I've seen the Fix... on my TV
I've seen the Fix... on 'NBC
I've seen the Fix... from WaPo's feed
I've seen the Fix... from Studio 3
I've seen the Fix... on my PC

Not sure it really qualifies as a jingle, but one I thought was great and still sticks in my mind is the DSCC's 2006 ad against Mike DeWine (which is gone from YouTube--argh). The one showing photos or video footage of DeWine with Bush, underlain with "The more we stick together, together, together/the more we stick together, the happier we'll be".

As a member of the Armed services for over 21 years, I served to uphold the constitution and the rights of all Americans. There comes a time when one wonders was your service to this counrty all for nothing. When men and women of our great country sacrifice years away from our families and the loss good friends for the values we hold dear - honor, integrity, eqallity, selfless service and loyalty it sadens me to know that these are not the same values held by some of our politicians. When we (America's Armed Services)agree on a principle we stick to it, we do not change our beliefs when it is becomes convenient and self serving, we stick to our principles - because that it what America expects form its service members.
DNC, if it a representative of those who serve this nation, then the DNC needs to stick to the principles which it has established - do not waiver. Prove to those of us whom have bleed, died, and served for a belief that is America that principles do matter. The Democratic party will prevail this fall, but at what cost are we willing to pay?

Among the most significant cracks are these:

- New data produced by more than 3,000 sophisticated ocean buoys scattered across the world's oceans indicate average water temperatures have been decreasing since 2003, not increasing as would be the case in Gore's globally warming world. NASA's Josh Willis, who studies the output of the sophisticated buoys that take temperature readings from thousands of feet below the surface, says the significance of the new data is unclear.

- The average land temperature of the globe dropped precipitously last year, according to the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction. The temperature drop -- more than enough to "wipe out most of the global warming of the past 100 years," according to the online technology publication Daily Tech -- was also recorded by NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

- The severity of this global temperature drop was reflected in the fact the average U.S. temperature in January was lower than the average for the previous century, according to the U.S. Climactic Data Center. Also, the Canadian Ice Service reports the Arctic ice pack is 10 to 20 centimeters thicker in many places this year than it was in 2007.

Scientists witness start of star's explosive death - Professor Oleg Sorokhtin of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences is advising people "to stock up on fur coats" because he expects an extended period of global cooling, an assessment that is echoed by Kenneth Tapping of the U.S. National Academy of Science's National Research Council. Both scientists contend solar activity explains most of the temperature variation in the Earth's atmosphere.

- A peer-reviewed study published recently in the journal Nature suggests there will be no global warming until 2015, due to the effects of the Meridional Overturning Circulation, a giant oceanic conveyor belt that moves warmer water into the North Atlantic in a 70- to 80-year cycle, according to the London Telegraph.

At the very least, these developments ought to give pause to legislators and policymakers who are otherwise hell-bent on accepting Gore's apocalyptic warnings and imposing on the U.S. draconian measures designed to stall or reduce economic growth; forcing widespread conversion to unproven alternative fuels for transportation, home and commercial uses; and severely limiting or even stopping suburban new-home construction. Adopting such measures would mean the loss of millions of jobs and a significantly reduced standard of living for most Americans. It's time to take a step back on this issue

Al, your 15 minutes is up.

Who can forget Birch Bayh's 1962 jingle:

Hey, look him over
He's your kinda guy
His first name is Birch
And his last name is Bayh
Candidate for Senator
In our Hoosier state
For Indiana, he will do more
Than anyone has done before...

"Hoorah, hoorah, the country's risin', Henry Clay and Frelinghuysen!"

I always wondered if this was written partly so voters would know how to pronounce Frelinghuysen.

Sadly, Clay-Frelinghusen lost the presidential election that year, however.

I've always been fond of the little-known 2000 jingle for GWB, sung to the tune of Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy" (from Altman's film "Nashville"):

Can't make a buck without the help of Daddy's cronies.
Can't run a thing without a helpful guiding hand.
It's just my way to think or say what I've been told by Karl or Jay
If it's a brain you're needing, you know it ain't me -

'Cause I'm stupid
I'm stupid
Tell me what I need to do
To get your votes and then **** you
Because I'm stupid.

Eugene Locke should be governor of Texas, the governor of Texas should be Eugene Locke...

Wish I could remember the real name of that tune, but every time I hear the tune I hear the immortal words supporting the Dallas Republican who never made it to a runoff.

Hope another Texan remembers.

Here's a link for "I like Ike". There were many versions of the jingle. This one includes some disgruntled, lonely donkeys in the background. The tune is quite catchy, but I can't help but notice how all the marchers are Anglos.
