Gas Tax Fight Grows Hotter

Less than 24 hours before Indiana and North Carolina voters head to the polls to pick between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.), the two campaigns are upping the ante on the issue of the gas tax.

The lines were drawn last week when Clinton proposed the suspension of the federal gas tax for the summer months to provide some level of relief to people struggling with the ever-increasing price of a gallon of gas. Clinton proposed to make up for the budget shortfall caused by the suspension by increasing taxes on oil and gas companies.

Obama quickly came out in opposition to the plan, dismissing it as political pandering that would have no real impact on voters. Obama, instead, has focused on the need for comprehensive energy reform and a long term solution to the problem.

While the back and forth over the issue was somewhat contentious over the weekend, new ads by each candidate reveal how much is at stake in tomorrow's primaries.

Let's look at both ads.

First, Clinton.

Then, Obama.

In other words, it is ON!

The two candidates' strategy on the 18.4 cents per gallon gas tax issue provides an interesting window into how they see their own campaigns as well as how they see the race and where they believe it is headed.

The Clinton campaign has long struggled to knock Obama off the pedestal of post-partisan candidate. Obama has successfully transformed his campaign into a movement, making a vote for him something bigger than simply casting a ballot for another politician.

Over the past two months or so some of that shine has worn off Obama as he has been beset by the ongoing controversy over Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his own comments about small town voters being "bitter" about their life circumstances.

The latest Clinton ad seeks to tie into that emerging narrative, asking "What happened to Barack Obama?" The more Clinton and her campaign can cast Obama as just another politician, the better the chance she has of making the case that she is the better choice for a general election.

The Clinton ad also seeks to paint her as someone in touch with the concerns of the middle class and willing to fight for those folks while casting Obama as less able to understand their needs and hopes.

"Hillary wants the oil companies to pay for the gas tax this summer -- so you don't have to," says the narrator in Clinton's ad. "Barack Obama wants you to keep paying; $8 billion in all. Hillary is the one who gets it."

On a conference call this morning, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson echoed that sentiment, insisting that the debate over a gas tax holiday spoke to a "larger difference" between the two candidates. "Senator Clinton has been the candidate in the race who understands the pains middle class voters are going through," Wolfson added.

Obama, on the other hand, doesn't directly address the gas tax in his ad -- perhaps a sign that he knows he is fighting on tenuous ground? -- choosing instead to focus on how Clinton's campaign tactics are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

The ad begins by framing the challenges before the American public -- the war in Iraq, high gas prices, economic slowdown. "And what does Hillary Clinton offer us?" asks the ad's narrator. "Her hometown newspaper says she's taking the low road -- her attacks do nothing but harm. The same old Washington politics won't fix our problems."

At the heart of the ad -- and Obama's campaign -- is that the choice between the two candidates isn't really over issues. Rather it's about turning the page on the way politics has been conducted since the 1980s, electing new faces and trying new approaches.

"We need honest answers... And a president we can trust," the narrator says at the close of Obama's latest ad -- driving home that message as well as subtly (or not so subtly) suggesting that voters can't (or don't) trust Clinton.

As the campaign has developed, Clinton has seen the number of people who believe her to be honest and trustworthy plummet. Obama's ad is aimed at reinforcing that notion in voters' mind, asking them to ask themselves whether they can believe anything that Clinton says at this point. If Obama can convince voters that Clinton is a flawed messenger, her attacks on him -- no matter how pointed or on point -- will be ineffective.

The candidates' strategies in the closing days of the Hoosier-Heel primaries (good? bad? better ideas?) mirror their closing arguments as the nomination fight draws to a close.

Clinton is making a heart appeal. She understands the struggles of middle class voters and is using policy proposals to solve those problems. She is using her stances on issues to stimulate the doubts that some lower middle class, rural, white voters have shown toward Obama -- an acknowledgment that her only realistic path to the nomination is if superdelegates decide nominating the Illinois Senator is too much of a risk in the fall.

Obama is making a head appeal. He understands that middle class voters are struggling with high gas prices but is investing a lot of faith in the idea that these same voters will see Clinton's proposal as ineffective and political pandering at its worst.

High-minded versus whole-hearted. A fascinating choice awaits voters in Indiana and North Carolina.

Dave,

Thanks, The links have great information. What I find interesting in this blog is the disparity among the users. Clearly the information people absorb and regurgitate is mixed with some facts and a lot of personal emotions. As a country until we are willing to pull together as a collective whole, we will not fare well in the immdeiate future. The WWII generation showed us the power of a unified America. It is my opinion we have become selfish, self centered and have the what can the govt do for me attitude. Albeit, I am in the military and have a slanted view. owever, I read and try to understand the issues from a detached perspective. Observing, researching, collecting, and understanding information is a daunting task these days. Never the less, to do nothing and rely on the media and corporate america is even more criminal. Thank you all for your tireless comments. I enjoy reading this blog when I can.

Randy Shaw of San Francisco ~ A Colleague and Friend of Drevelyn "D" Minor ~~~ Wrote in the ~~~Beyond Chron.org ~~~for more information please visit their web-site. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Clinton Moves Right~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The day of reckoning has finally arrived. For all of the talk about Kentucky and West Virginia, and then taking this fight to the convention, Hillary Clinton either wins both North Carolina and Indiana or her hope of winning the nomination is done.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Recognizing the stakes, Clinton has described North Carolina as a "game changer." And she has responded to this challenge the same way that the Clintons have always done: by moving to the right and co-opting Republican policies/campaign messages.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Consider the following:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The summer gas tax waiver: That proposal was initiated by John McCain, and is opposed by all leading Democrats. Clinton used the standard Republican tactic of talking like a populist while governing like an aristocrat in pushing a gas tax waiver that would eliminate tens of thousands of blue-collar jobs, while not costing the oil companies a dime.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Remember earlier this year when Clinton repeatedly attacked Obama's accurate claim that Ronald Reagan had shifted the nation in a way that Bill Clinton had not? Well, in Clinton's raging against the federal gas tax---the one used to build highways and mass transit---she appears to be channeling Reagan and other Republicans in trying to wear the anti-tax mantle in this race.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Clinton's claim that her opponents are "elitist": A classic example from the Republican playbook, which has multimillionaire candidates like the Bushes claim that Democrats and progressives are serving the elite. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Economists are "elitists" whose views should be ignored: Clinton argued over the weekend that she did not care that every economist thought her gas tax waiver was a bad idea, because she said they were "elitists." George W. Bush has shown the disastrous impacts of ignoring expert advice, and Clinton is now embracing the same course. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I agree with Randy and I'm voting for Obama!

As usual, Nor'Easter demonstrates his profound ignorance. Worse, he seems to take delight in it and wont bother to read even the most obvious resources to correct that ignorance. In his writings and writings about him, Augustine's heritage and race are explicitly stated: (from the Wikipedia article on Augustine (...Saint Augustine was, by descent, a Berber[6], a major ethnic group native to North Africa comprising the Numidians and Mauri...". These are black, negroid ancestory African's. Likewise, other early christian church figures are discussed in "NORTH AFRICAN CHURCH FATHERS: THE CLASH BETWEEN CHRIST AND CULTURE AND THE FREEDOM OF MAN", http://www.africamissions.org/africa/nafchfat.html.

Dave! and Nor'Easter, thanks for the

Did you find this Cone excerpt on the web? What names are associated with this theology?

Posted by: MarkInAustin | May 6, 2008 2:07 PM

In Mr. Brooks' posting on Black Liberation Theology there were a couple of obvious innaccuracies about Saints Augustin and Aquinas, so you have to wonder what else in that posting was also incorrect.

He takes a lot of liberties with facts in his postings, so much so that everything has to be taken with a grain of salt until fact checked.

Posted by: Nor'Easter | May 6, 2008 11:36 AM

MarkInAustin - Mibrooks makes Black Liberation Theology sound so nice I almost want to join. But that would be problematic. The following is James Cone's definition. Cone is one of the founders of the theology. It does not sound very inviting, at least to me.

"Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."

Gas Tax Holiday: Multiple Choice

Hillary Clinton's claim that a Gas Tax Holiday will help middle class Americans, at the same time that her advisers have privately stated the opposite to the Washington Post, namely that they are aware that this will result in an increase in gas prices, and that it is "just politics", is most similar in political mindset and ideology to:

a) Former Bush Administration Chief of Staff Andy Card stating that the Administration waited until September to make its case for Iraq because `From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August';

b) Paul Wolfowitz predicting that the costs of reconstruction in Iraq would be paid for by oil profits from that nation, when contemporaneous predictions of the costs of the war and a subsequent insurgency would be, and have been, far greater;

c) Dick Cheney's prediction we would be greeted in Iraq as "liberators, despite numerous pre-war intelligence analyses which warned "that the U.S. would face armed resistance from Iraqis following the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime."

d) All of the above

Clinton Calls for "Bad Weather Holiday"

"When asked this morning by ABC News' George Stephanopoulos if she could name a single economist who backs her call for a gas tax holiday this summer, HRC said "I'm not going to put my lot in with economists."

The gas tax holiday is...so economically stupid (it would increase demand for gas and cause prices to rise, eliminating any benefit to consumers while costing the Treasury more than $9 billion, and generate more pollution) and silly (even if she won, HRC won't be president this summer) as to be worrisome. That HRC now says she doesn't care that what economists think is even more troubling."

-Robert Reich, May 4, 2008

I know we've got those "intellectual", high-falutin', elitist meteorologists, those "forecasters" with their complicated charts and their mumbo-jumbo, their high fronts and their low fronts, their Doppler radars. But I've come to say that we're going to put an end to all of that.

When my daddy and I went out in the morning in (Scranton, Indianapolis, Durham, Hagåtña, Charlotte Amalie, San Juan), and he said "It's going to be a sunny day today", well, that was good enough for me.

And that's why, if you vote for me on (May 6, May 13, June 3), I will put into effect a "Bad Weather Holiday" running from the years 2009-2012--and potentially extendable.

That's right. We shouldn't have to eat our (hot dogs, barbecue, tamales, Chicken Estufao, Stewed oxtail) under rainy skies. We've had enough of going off to work in the (streets, sands, seas) of this most beautiful (state, territory) only to face a cold, cloudy day. We know what it's like to rest our weary bones after a hard day of labor in the nearest (local watering hole, locale taberna, berlina) only to step out into a stiff, tiring wind.

The Weather issue is very real to me, as I've been meeting people across this nation who (walk, drive, sail, ride ox before stewing tail) to work, and would save precious sums if they did not have to spend their hard earned money on "umbrellas" and "rain coats" and other high priced, high class items of the upper crust. In my daddy's day, a newspaper held over the head by a worn, calloused hand was just fine.

So I say: Let the 'Umbrella Lobby' take the brunt--not our hard working citizens. Oh, sure. I know elite opinion and so called "academic experts" say that my plan would cause 12 straight years of hail, swarms of ravenous locusts, and a vortex of hurricanes ranging from the Mideast to the West Coast.

But I don't put stock in experts. And neither should you. And that's why you should vote for me on (May 6, May 13, June 3).

NOTE: North Carolina version: Drop all final "'g"s.

How does the gas tax fight grow hotter if Obama's ad doesn't mention the gas tax. Perhaps, his polling indicates his argument is losing or arguing to keep the tax isn't as he thinks. He took out the gas tax part and puts out a rather tepid response.

You are correct, the democratic race has gotten a bit out of hand.

However, if you want to see someone governing, why don't you put a call into Nancy Pelosi's office???

She has done relatively nothing since she took over.

She can't even pass a budget. We have had continuing resolutions - is that even constitutional??

If you have ever studied government, you will find that the power of the President is limited.

Check out what your democratic Congress is doing beyond diddling about when they will schedule the next worthless Iraq vote.

The democrats have been in control of Congress for almost a year and half now - what have they accomplished?

Patrick Call Nancy Pelosi's office. Ask them.

Somebody needs to focus. We have a war going on, health care financing spiralling out of control, the price of food and energy going ballistic and we can now finally choose a new president.

So what have all the media outlets got us all stirred up so pationately over?

Who was Obama's pastor and can we really afford to give the average driver $28 this summer.

Is that all there is? Am I missing something? It would seem just as appropriate to just have a swimsuit contest followed by the evening gown contest. And then we vote.

Thank you mibrooks27 for your very clear and precise posting.

However, the Rev. Wright in his three speeches which I watched a few days ago said nothing like that.

sorry.

nothing like that.

The question still is: what does Obama believe ???

Obama brought his children to this church teaching Black Liberation Theology and "Black Values" for years and years.

The term black values came from the church's own website.

This country deserves some answers from a person who is standing for office.

Seriously.

Also, while most of your posting appeared to be reasonable I would like to call your attention to this phrase from your posting which is completely inappropriate in a forum like this:

The change is metrics is a change, which is what Obama keeps calling for.

So when Obama wins, they change the metric which is what he gets for winning.

AND what is going on? Obama is really going far with Idaho - a completely red state that will not mean much for the democrats in November.

Projected performance in November is important. Just because Obama can get a bunch of college kids in a gym, it does not mean much.

"Words Of Wisdom" - Black Liberation Theology is nothing more than the manifestation of former black radicals that became Christian's and understood that Christ and his message offered them exactly what they had been seeking all along. In that, they weren't all that much different than the Jesus Freaks who founded Calvary Chapel or the Franciscan's inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. Moreover, those former black radical were taking back their birth right. St. Augustine was black, so was Thomas Aquinas, as were several of the earliest church fathers. A lot of the most fundamental underpinnings of the Christian church are African, Greek, Jewish, eclectic in a way that some white American Fundamentalist twit can NEVER hope to understand coming from the lily white European church tradition.Black Liberation Theology is not that much different than the new Native American church of my people. It embodies the righteous anger, the prophetic traditions of the Old Testament, the desire to meet the challenge Christ set before us to spread the Word that all of us are God's children, all of us deserve to be treated decently and, in turn, must treat others the same. But, and this is Biblical, if the unbelievers or claimed believers do not heed the Word, do not undertake the challenge, then we must show them, and this is Christ saying this mind you, the dust from the bottom of our shoes. The Gospel is meant for those who will listen and undertake the challenge. It is not all sweetness and light, it is not joy and happiness and empty headed waving your hands in the air on Sunday mornings, it is hard work, a desire to CHANGE yourself and the world, to meet the challenge set before us by Christ. The rebirth is not 'eggersis', awaking from the once dead, it is 'antistasis', rebuilding anew from the rubble of the old, corrupted, and worn out.

I just can't wait to see how the world reacts if Hillary Clinton manages to obtain the nomination for the democratic party by means of pandering, inserting guilt by association, elitism, former pastors and flag pins! The world is already laughing at this seemingly endless take no prisoners campaign likened by Bill Clinton to a football game - despite the fact even football games have rules. But hey, America already gave the world Ronald Reagan, two Bushes and a 'I never had sex with that woman' presidency - so when in doubt!

The only thing a Hillary presidency will demonstrate to the world is how racist America is and how Americans are so easily distracted from real issues. Or that they are distracted from real issues exactly because race has in of itself become an issue. Either way it is not a pretty picture. But of course it's not about the world - it's about America. And the world will just have to accept how America does business. Oh oh, here we go again!

Chinese Army Inc. . Just as there is no quick fix for the energy crunch there is also no easy solution to the trade crash. During the 1990s, Clinton also sponsored a so-called trade boom with China that actually busted America. Hundreds of billions of dollars flowed out of America in the largest single trade deficit in history.

A real solution would be to reduce the need for trucking. Buy from your neighborhood. Don't buy from California or China unless you have no choice in your area.

The mentality of buying the best and the cheapest from around the world taught in business school is hurting our environment. Production of poor quality is adding more junks in our landfills. We must treat our environment as if it is a real budget and spend it carefully.

BTW, I am not even an environmentalist. I agree with Senator Obama that this gas tax holiday is just a political ploy to pander for votes before a major primary. Hillary just wants some temporary advantage for IN and NC primaries, while McCain means it.

Andrew Young is another example of how people can lose their ideals once the get a taste of power. Wonder what the Clintons have promised him? Oh, by the way, Andrew Young is a member of the same denomation - UCC - as Obama, AND a recipient of the Trumpet award - you know, the one Farrakhan received that has all the Clintonites in an uproar. Let's ask Andy about that, eh?

Obama said to Tim Russert on Meet The Press that he never heard the things Rev. Wright said until it was brought up by the media. He said he was not in the church when Rev. Wright said the provocative things that came out. Yet, in his book and audio tape, he quotes Rev. Wright EXACTLY - WORD FOR WORD regarding the US Bombing Hiroshima, etc. Here is the video link below.

Why does Mr. Obama INSIST on lying to us over and over and over. He calls his excuses and stories "reframing" his message.

I'll say. He's got so many frames around him we may as well call him a museum.

No meeting with Canada - adamantly denied this until the MEETING MEMO showed that he was lying. Then he continuted to deny, then pointed, deflected and said Hillary did it!

This man is outrageous.

And another thing, can he please look at people when he's talking to him. It's a classic trait of a liar that they look down and not into a persons eyes when they are lying.

He should really stop either lying, or looking down. He does it CONSTANTLY.

He also used to have his hands in his pockets all the time. Mr. Smooth? Or Mr. Hiding something.

At this point, I think we all know the answer to that one.

Here is the video where he QUOTES the Rev. Wrights words from the sermon he says he never heard.

Mr. Obama would probably like to re-write his book now and take it out.

[Tip of the hat to those who have already made some of these point, and a recap]

Our current phantom energy plan, "soak and choke," has been brought to you, for the most part, by politicians, industry, and economists (the energy-aristocracy). To be sure, we consumers, at the bottom of the energy chain, have contributed to our situation. The primary difference between us and the energy-aristocracy, is that our buck passing is not a metaphor -- BUT at the pump.

Almost two years ago, shortly after taking impeachment off the table, Nancy Pelosi also promised and has failed to deliver a comprehensive energy plan.

Oil companies have stolen billions of dollars by taking exorbitant windfall profits, by avoiding taxes, by acquiring reductions in or ignoring penalties for foul ups, ..., by holding back fees and royalties.

Hillary Clinton has proposed all of energy, tax, ..., and health plans/policies. Barack Obama presented his weaker versions of the same, only after her plans were made public.
[ Coldcomfort: . . Amen, and remember how during the debates, the hard questions would go to Hillary first, giving the other candidates time to listen to her and then think of their reply. ]

I am sure everyone agrees that any comprehensive policy should eventually include every element in the chain -- explorations, ..., well heads, ..., refineries, ..., distribution, ..., industrial and individual consumers, ... engines, appliances, and manufactured goods, ..., AND ALTERNATIVE SOURCES [ emphasis added ]. . . . . Further, time will be required to fully implement any plan(s). Usage habits must change. Equipment of all sorts, across the full spectrum of the chain, must be phased out and replaced.

Now, Hillary Clinton has proposed an additional short term plan directed at only a few elements of the chain. She intends to relieve the individual consumers and take the money from the suppliers who are reaping huge unearned profits and are already in arrears on old debts. I am not alone in believing that it has the potential for short term relief of the strangulation that is already affecting the bottom of the energy chain. Further, it is not difficult to see that the relief will extend beyond the individual energy consumers.

Critics (her opponents and the energy-aristocrats who have failed us) say this temporary plan rewards bad behavior and will wreak long term havoc. That might be true, if it were to become permanent, and we fail to deliver and implement long term, comprehensive policies and plans.

Who would be relieved? Individuals who must commute to work and school, who deliver goods and services, who must look for work or go for groceries, who planned for vacations, etc. The relief would extend (trickle down) to a great variety of the other 'small people' who support these activities, and even to the the price of food on the table.

As expected, Obama and the Obamaniacs jumped on this to deflect attention from his shortcomings, failings, and fear of debating.

Obama shows us once again he is full of hot air. Hillary has stepped up because she knows we need immediate relief and cannot wait until someone is elected. She will do this tax cut in the short term and this is a good sign she will do even more when she is President. Any Independent, Republican or Democrat voting for Obama needs to rethink their vote, the guy is full of trash talk and zero accomplishments just like the do nothing Congress. Hillary sees the pain and struggle of Americans facing daily the outrageous money grab the pro Bush and Obama oil companies are making at the pump, obviously Obama does not and thinks this problem can wait. Hillary is on our side, she is the real deal, she will fight and seriously make things happen, Obama will get rolled over like the big talker, do nothing he is. Do not vote for all talk no action Obama, vote for Hillary to save America.

Talk about "shell games," the candidates AND the press appear to have become collusive participants when it comes to the failure to offer and report on meaningful and effective short-term solutions to our energy problems! As usual, the press continues to fail to hold the candidates to task; the current (and paltry) choice of presidential contenders (especially co-sponsors Hillary Clinton and John McCain) should be strongly reminded by the news media that since they both are so eager to score political points with a short-term, federal tax abatement on gasoline, why have they so conveniently failed to propose an abatement on the current 54 cent-per-gallon import tariff on Brazilian ethanol?? Our current commitment of much of our farmland toward ethanol production derived from corn is, in fact, a no-win, economically unsound, and carbon-laden exercise in futility. This ill-conceived venture has done little to wean us from foreign oil, has not kept fuel prices down at the pump, and continues to take food from the mouths of Americans through skyrocketing prices at the grocery store. At the same time, it's a real no-brainer that America would be much better off buying fuel from Brazil than fighting in Iraq for oil! If only we had a good government and responsible press.....

HILLARY CLINTON CAN BEST WIN IN NOVEMBER:

It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.

Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her Pennsylvania victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources.

But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.

Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.

Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.

If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.

Sen. Hillary Clinton: "You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it's also clear that we've got nine more important contests to go."

Sincerely

Clinton/Obama would have given Democrats 16 years of whitehouse control.

If Obama's the top of the ticket, Democrats will lose in November and its quite possible that Democrats will be locked out of the whitehouse till 2016.

If Obama gets the nomination he'll lose in November by a landslide.

If you think like Barack Obama, that WORKING CLASS PEOPLE are just a bunch of "BITTER"!, STUPID, PEASANTS, Cash COWS!, and CANNON FODDER. :-(

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

Best regards

jacksmith... Working Class :-)

p.s. You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you don't know that the huge amounts of money funding the Obama campaign to try and defeat Hillary Clinton is coming in from the insurance, and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. And denying you, and your loved ones the life saving medical care you needed. All just so they can make more huge immoral profits for them-selves off of your suffering...

You see, back in 1993 Hillary Clinton had the audacity, and nerve to try and get quality, affordable universal health care for everyone to prevent the suffering and needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of you each year. :-)

Approx. 100,000 of you die each year from medical accidents from a rush to profit by the insurance, and medical industry. Another 120,000 of you die each year from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don't die from. And I could go on, and on...

Ambassador Andrew Young in an interview with "The Newsmakers Journal."

Courtesy The Newsmakers Journal "I want Obama to be president," said former UN Ambassador Andrew Young, "... in 2016. It's not a matter of being inexperienced. It is a matter of being young."

In an interview with The Newsmakers Journal, Young explains with candor why he believes now is not the time for Obama to serve as president.

"There's a certain level of maturity," Young said. "You have to learn to take a certain amount of sh*t. ... Leadership requires suffering."

Saying, "Barack Obama does not have the support network yet to get to be president," Young added: "To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion. His time will come, and the world will be ready a visionary leadership. Now, somebody's got to clean up the mess."

Then Young offered this story about Bill Clinton: "Bill [Clinton] is every bit as black as Barack. He's probably gone out with more black women than Barack. [laughs] I'm clowning, but when they went to Nelson Mandela's inauguration -- there was a whole plane load of black folks who went down there. After the inauguration, there was a party. [Bill] Clinton was the one who said, "Let's start a Soul Train line!" All these middle class, bourgie folks looked around ... and Bill did the moon walk down the Soul Train line. And Hillary pulled her skirt up above her knees and she got down and went on through, too."

Why do Obama nuts constantly lie about Hillary Clinton's plans?

Why do they gleefully adopt right-wing anti-Clinton talking points?

If Obama gets the nomination, who can he point to as an example of a successful Democratic President after he and his supporters have totally trashed the reputation of the only two term Democratic President since FDR?

Obama's whole campaign is based on the idea that we should trust a young guy with half a terrm in the US Senate and no executive experience rather than a highly experienced Senator who's even more likable and is also a war hero.

When the bumper stickers come out that say --

Who would you rather vote for, the war hero or the coke-head

What will Obama supporters do.

Obama's unelectable in a general election.

Is winning the primary so important to the Obama nuts that they don't care about throwing away Democrats best chance in years?

Do they even understand that Obama's far-left voting record eliminates any chance of centrist Democrats voting for him, let alone independents and Republicans?

Don't they realize how much has changed now that people know that Obama went to a "Black Liberation Theology" church for 20 years.

Obama can't win, he can only cause Democrats to lose.

Words of Nonsense,

I wish we had no taxes at all, but then, who would we bully, seeing as most of our taxes go to our "fighting men and women", (which is code for preppy racist military lovers pushing papers with benefits).

Fine, no taxes, every man for himself. I hope they come take your stuff, first, because I aint got nothing to lose.

Obviously, you do.

Tax Holiday is BS. Fix your own highways and Bridges, like my German Grandparents did.

What a Tool!

OK I think everyone can agree that we the gasoline tax debate is bogus and we need to get back to Black Liberation Theology.

What does Obama believe??

If he wants to denounce the philosophy of the church, why did he bring his children there time after time, year after year ???

Rev. Wright has also recently brought up some more issues - like left brain / right brain.

Will Obama continue to stand by these themes of his church ??

These are important questions.

The media is not reporting these issues.

let's be honest here...

we live in a set of ecosystems, business, biological, social, economic...

there is no mystery, no surprise, unless you count the stupidity of leaders who think with their "metaphorical" crotches, and administer BJ's as "party favors" and and don't actually have the capacity to do anything except reach for the next pleasure able moment even if it's rife with addictiton... and it destroys AMERICA as a country...

look,

a single example: we could have made a deal for the OIL in IRAQ... IRAQ was in EMBARGO...no place to go and held in stasis...it HAD TO DEAL FOR THE OIL IF WE OFFERED IT !!!!!!!

but then there wouldn't have been any big money for

Carlyle Group, Bechtel, Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater, DynCorp, and others...

and certainly no NON COMPETE CONTRACTS AWARDED eh ???

so bushCO and CRONYs and COMPLICIT CONGRESS, creates a situation which will drain the nations economy at the very moment when the worlds populations are reaching points that will tip entire regions into famine....

these rich kids, who trash talk anything standing in their way...

could get away with it 100 years ago...the land could withstand their lies.

it's not possible any more.

We need leaders that do not pander to families or the corportocracy.

The US Economy is a NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE.

The Global Economy could use a good example of how to treat leaders who are ruthless in pursuit of personal gain at the expense of their citizens.

It would be good to see some whitehouse, executive branch members

brought down low, tried for treason and executed publically....it would give others courage...and hope...

in the fear the cowardice and the destruction of our values...

remove these scum from having an effect on our lives,

take out the trash.

The woman is pure sleaze. But more importantly she doesn't put America First.

_____She goes to NC, her accent becomes southern.

_____She steals all of Obama's ideas "Washington is not listening" etc., and tries to sell them as her own. The problem is Obama's ideas are genuine and they are the reason for his candidacy. She is just pandering and doesn't mean a word of what she says.

_____She thinks people are dumb enough not to figure out that she is financed by NYC money folks. The same folks who pushed hard to oust Saddam, the same folks who are behind the credit crisis, the same folks who are pushing for war with Iran. That's the reason she voted for the vote and that's the reason she voted to declare Iran's revolutionary forces terrorist, and that's the reason she went with her rant of "obliterate Iran".

EVERYTHING she says or does counts on either people's stupidity or racism.

Ask yourself why conservative Democrats like Sam Nunn are endorsing Obama. Could it be they realize Obama is the candidate who has the courage to clean up DC of Lobbies? Could it be that those same Lobbies who have immense influence over the media are working hard to trash him? Were they behind the "Obama is muslim" emails? Why are they so afraid of losing power?

So many questions and so little time to answer them. Please put America FIRST.

The FIRST time anyone starts talking about cutting taxes, half the democratic party goes nuts.

They are all suddenly economists and making up reasons why it is bad for the economy, bad for the nation, and will not work.

Posted by: Words of Wisdom | May 5, 2008 10:04 PM

William, when did these 200 economists get together to sign this letter - would you please list the 200 economists you found, I want to know if they are real economists and how you got them so fast.

Posted by: What | May 5, 2008 9:59 PM

I don't think this is a "head versus heart" contest.

This is "head" versus "evil head" contest, with Obama as the head and Hillary cynically using her evil head to count on that we won't know any better.

That's not heart: as you pointed out, she should know better than to suggest this idiotic idea. Only reason is to pander, right? That's calculating, and that's not heart.

For all the innocently naive (dumb) people who do not understand why the (BS Name Alert)"Gas Tax Holiday" is a Joke. Here is why:

1) by the time it goes through, we'll be saving more like 10 or 5 cents per gallon from right now.

2) when "Holiday" is over, prices will jump the full 18-23 cents again.

3) This Tax money is used on our Federal Roads and Infastructure (you know, like bridges over the Mississippi.

4) It does not attack the problem: Which is increased demand and static supply. With this over-hyped "holiday", demand will increase, raising the natural price of gas, so now, you've eliminated any benefit to the highway repair program and raised the price of gas to what it was in the first place, if not more.

Get it? Supply VS Demand. Increase Demand, Price go up.

It's not worth the headache over a couple of cents.

Demand go down, price down.

INCREASE the tax on gas, and the price will go down.

There's no getting around it. Oil is just about dead.

Serious changes need to be made in our way of life, but no one wants to see it.

First casualty:

Suburbia.

Good Riddance.

The Obama Campaign lost a good opportunity to go after Hillary on her copied "dumb a$$" McCain idea on a gas holiday tax. Obama should have countered by not only pointing out that Hillary is just political pandering and the problems of a "gas tax holiday" outweighs the merit, but also reminding voters of common sense approaches to saving fuel through improved mileage. Obama should be talking about personal responsibility to reduce fuel consumption. He should speak to conservative driving habits that every driver can do like no jack-rabbit starts and stops, driving the speed limits, keeping tires properly inflated, avoid idling or prolonged warmups of your vehicles, and remove any excess weight of items stored in your car. Doing these types of things can save you anywhere between $20 to $100 over the same three month period as the proposed "gas tax holiday".

Common Obama and his campaign...common sense approaches save real money and don't pander!

Posted by: AJ | May 5, 2008 9:53 PM

"More than 200 economists, including four Nobel prize winners, signed a letter rejecting proposals by presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and John McCain to offer a summertime gas-tax holiday."

Oh wait, Hillary and McCain don't know anything about economics and they know economists are all elitists.

Don't distract us with facts, professors.

Posted by: william | May 5, 2008 9:49 PM

The great thing about being a Clinton supporter is that we're going to get the chance to see arrogant Obama supporters get cut down to size.

If Obama gets the nomination, McCain will be the next President and we'll wait until 2012.

Obama's doesn't have the experience, judgment or character to be President.

If he wins the nomination, it will be a pyrrhic victory because he'll lose in November.

We'll pay less taxes and Obama's supporters will lose out on all the government support they mooch off of the rest of us.

If Obama supporters keep doing what they're doing, they'll completely destroy the Democratic Party.

Posted by: | May 5, 2008 9:47 PM

I can't believe Obama's team is PAYING to make sure people don't trust Hillary.

Save your money, after 8 years of Clintons, what MORE could you possibly say?

White Water?

Selling Nights in the Lincoln Bedroom?

Vince Foster?

Monica Lewinsky?

The list goes on and on. How about Bill's Diet Coke Sipping "Testimony" in front of the nation about whether oral sex was sex or not.

That doesn't just get forgotten. Obama should save his money or run ads against McCain.

This democratic race is as over as ours is.

McCain vs Obama

The Battle for the White House 2008!

May the best vet win! Ha Ha Ha

When George Stephanopoulos of ABC asked Hillary Clinton to name ONE economist who thought her gas tax plan was a good idea, her response was "I'm not going to put my lot in with economists." I think if anyone had any doubts about what a great president Clinton would be, they can now rest in peace. She would make a great president. I mean, wouldn't you want a president who doesn't care what the economists think about the economy or her economic policies? Ignorance is blissful.

Educate yourself on the tax. The whole of the economics profession thinks Hillary's gas tax idea is the stupidest thing they have heard in ages. I hope she gets elected, and you enjoy the 33 cents extra a day it will save you (after she convinces the whole Democratic leadership in Congress and the whole Republican leadership that her stupid plan merits a bill), while the roads that those taxes help to maintain go to hell, demand for oil goes up, prices rise further as a result of increased demand, the oil companies price in the "windfall" tax into the price you end up paying, and the environment gets further screwed. Great great idea, and I congratulate the Hillary supporters on standing up for another asinine proposal instead of really addressing the problem. Great idea indeed. Indeed, even Paul Krugman, Hillary's economic cheerleader on the New York Times criticized her proposal. That's how bad it is. Go Hillary! Pander away...

No wonder our country is going down hill...

Obama is desperate to get the pundits and the media off a clear discussion of Black Liberation Theology.

So he manufactures a dispute over the gasoline tax holiday.

However, it is the same proposal Obama backed recently as a State Senator - so Obama changed his position in order to create this controversy.

AND what does Obama do in addition - he calls Hillary's credibility into question on the issue !

The real Obama is showing.

Let's get back to Black Liberation Theology - Obama should tell the nation if he really believes black children learn differently as compared to white children, as Rev. Wright said in Detroit.

Obama needs to answer these questions.

We need clarity on this. Obama is not running for a minor office.

Be serious people.

Your right, this was a gift. You watch if you hear a thing about after tomorrow though From Hillary. No need to keep running the same con.

If this gas tax issue was all a plan by the Obama campaign to shift focus away from Wright to Hillary's dumb economic proposal as some of these posters allege, then Obama owes Hillary and Bill a couple of good seats at his swearing in on January 20, 2009. Hillary may have just helped Senator Obama win the nomination and election. Thanks Hillary!

So Chris Obama is addressing the gas tax issue is his last ad, but the issue has become more one of credibility than of policy. We can see that in the exchange with Andrea Mitchell. Howard refuses to answer the question of whether they are really going to go through with this?

Further, they have yet to adequately answer the question of how the benefits of the gas tax holiday goes to the people who need it instead of the oil companies.

Judging from their answers they really don't care about the details now and ironically refuse to listen to anyone who has any "real" experience with gas tax policy.

So, Obama's ad hits the bullseye of this issue: Do we want someone who is willing to say anything and who offers the wrong solutions - even when they know they are wrong - for political gain? Or do we want someone we can trust to tell us the truth about what is going on in our economy and what needs to be done to fix that?

=====================
Andrea Mitchell:
So if the windfall profit tax is not passed, you would forgo the gas tax holiday?

Howard Wolfson:

Here's the beauty of the American political process. We are in a great debate about this issue. Senator Obama has joined the debate. Senator McCain has joined the debate. Senator Clinton has joined the debate. Each one of them have a different point of view on the issue. We believe we have the right point of view. I'm sure Senator Obama thinks he does, and Senator McCain thinks he does. We are going to have an election tomorrow in two states that have been hotly contested. Voters have been following this issue. They have been following this campaign. They have been following the debate. Let's see what they say tomorrow. I believe the American political process is remarkably adaptive to..

Andrea Mitchell

Guys, I'm just asking you whether it is truth in advertising, whether its accurate to suggest that the two would be simultaneous, that one would fund the other?
===================
Howard reminds me of a cheesy insurance salesman preying on the elderly.

What's going to happen next?

Simple, if Hillary gets the nomination, she'll win the election.

If Obama gets the nomination, McCain will.

Most of mainstream America doesn't know about Obama's hard-drug history.

You can blame the mainstream press for that.

Once people know, Obama will lose by a landslide.

The more people find out about the real Obama, the faster they'll run in the other direction.

His teflon is turning to rust.

Worse then that, for an empty promise. These are the same people who signed mortgages and never read them. The vast amount of the public are morons and Hillary knows it. I wonder how much they laugh at these people they pretend to care about when they are alone and talking about the campaign? I would love to be a fly on the wall, it must be hilarious as they try to dream up more B**l s**t to feed these people.

Bonjedi to address your posting at 7:48

Sorry however am I to take your comment as any mention of Black Liberation Theology is racist???

Is that your position???

First, Obama is putting himself up for office. His views are fair game.

Most importantly, Obama brought his children to a church for years which had Black Liberation Theology as its guiding theme.

IN FACT, the church had on its own website an advancement of a "Black Value System" which was presented as separate from a white value system.

This is Obama's church - the same church which
