Framing The Clinton Legacy: Mending Fences with Black Voters
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (N.Y.) concession speech tomorrow afternoon in Washington will be one of the most closely watched -- and eternally analyzed -- political addresses in modern history.
Following her widely-panned speech on Tuesday night, Clinton must show that she is ready to unify the party behind Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) while simultaneously beginning to define how history will treat her bid for the Democratic nomination.
(The Fix will be watching the speech from his heavily air-conditioned basement and will offer an analysis of the address in this space tomorrow afternoon.)
The first part of the equation -- offering words of support for Obama and pledging to help him win in the fall -- is the easy part. The more difficult challenge will be the legacy-setting portion of the address -- as Clinton seeks to begin the process of repairing damage done to her (and her husband's) brand over the course of the past 18 months.
New polling conducted by Gallup shows that the Clintons have much work to do -- particularly in the black community.
In the survey, which was conducted in late May and early June, 58 percent of black voters felt favorably inclined toward Clinton while 36 percent felt unfavorably. Compare that to to her ratings just one year ago in Gallup polling -- an 84 percent favorable rating among African Americans compared to a minuscule 10 percent unfavorable.
That trend is confirmed in the Post's own polling. In a survey conducted in mid-April, Clinton's fav/unfav among black voters was 68/32, a steady decline from a Post poll in January (81/17) and a far cry from where her numbers stood in February 2007 among black voters (85/11).
More striking even than the overall numbers were the intensity measures. Back in February of last year, 53 percent of black voters felt "strongly" favorable about Clinton while just five percent felt strongly unfavorable toward her. In the April survey, roughly half as many black voters (27 percent) described their feelings toward Clinton as strongly favorable while more than triple (17 percent) said they felt strongly unfavorably to her.
The approval numbers for former President Bill Clinton followed a similar downward pattern. In February 2007, 86 percent of black voters viewed the former president favorably while just 13 percent saw him in an unfavorable light. By April 2008, 67 percent of black voters felt favorably toward Bill Clinton while 32 percent described their feelings as unfavorable toward the former chief executive.
The slippage is remarkable given that, going into this presidential race, black voters were expected to form one of the main pillars of Clinton's support. Bill Clinton enjoyed warm relations with the black community throughout his presidency and was famously described by author Toni Morrison thusly in a 1998 New Yorker piece: "White skin notwithstanding, this is our first black President. Blacker than any actual black person who could ever be elected in our children's lifetime."
The emergence of Obama as a legitimate contender to be the first black person ever selected as the presidential nominee of either party immediately complicated Clinton's presidential calculations.
Black voters expressed initial excitement about Obama but for months stayed behind Clinton -- a phenomenon that launched hundreds (if not thousands) of news stories.
Then came South Carolina's primary. While many within Hillary Clinton's inner circle were prepared to cede the state to Obama due to its sizable black population, the former president would not hear of it -- campaigning throughout the state in the runup to the late January vote.
The result, by any objective measure, was a disaster for her campaign, and seems largely responsible for the declining poll numbers for both of the Clintons among black voters.
Tomorrow, Hillary Clinton begins the repair work that will be crucial to her political future -- whatever that may be. To hold any sort of national office -- president, vice president or even Senate Majority Leader -- Clinton must find a way to bridge the chasm that has opened between the former First Couple and African American voters during this primary process.
Post polling director Jon Cohen and polling analyst Jennifer Agiesta contributed to this report.

Since Obama's resume is so thin and weak we need to be able to evaluate him based on his actions this year in this campaign.
1) He committed FRAUD against his own campaign theme in South Carolina
2) He falsely accused Gerry Ferraro of making "offensive remarks" and then carried on as if she had made horrible racial slurs to his face.
3) He attempted to win over Superdelegates with a racist argument that there would be "riots in the streets" if the superdelegates did not vote for the black man.
4) His conduct on several occassions was disrespectful, for instance going on stage while Hillary was still speaking so the networks would go to him - this was rude conduct
5) He ran his campaign in a racially divisive way - he sought to bully the whites into voting racially, and seeking out and making up FALSE CLAIMS OF RACIAL OFFENSE while seeking to unite the black community behind him along racial lines.
All I can say Obama is you can not have it both ways, you look like a complete hypocrite and a fraud.
We can add to that the OFFENSES AGAINST DEMOCRACY of Obama seeking to prevent the revotes in Michigan and Florida - and instead his supporters wanted those states to count HALF, instead of FULL, if those revotes took place - while that may look smart on the surface, it shows that his tactics are more SOVIET STYLE seeking to limit elections rather than empower people.
See, there are two strains within the BLACK community, one seeks to empower people, the other seeks government programs, hand-outs and is bascially more socialist. Clearly, Obama comes from the higher tax, socialist part of the black community.
The clear headed portion of the black community believes
1) One does not mix the gospel with politics.
2) Empowerment is the key to advancement
3) Working hard, getting ahead, without affirmative action or other hand-outs is the path out of poverty and the bad neighborhoods.
4) This group takes personal responsibility.
5) The empowerment people are personal-based, they do not care about Jim Crow or and they are not seeking compensation for something that happened to their grandparents or great-grandparents.
Obama is a confused man, not a leader.

The problem with Chris is that he's consistently anti, when it comes to Clinton. Since Hillary has suspended her campaign, the logical question the Fix should be putting out there is can Obama make it up to her base? It's fascinating to watch pundits continue to make the case against her, as if she were the one running, not him. What is it really about? Continued the negative message to work against her as VEEP.
Chris let me say here and now, you're ridicuously transparent.

There is no way that millions of the fed up
Hillary Clinton voters will ever forgive her for selling them out to that phony empty suit loser Barack Hussein Obama and
they and myself will never vote for Obama
no matter how many pretty speechs Clinton
and Obama give about electing the most totally inexperienced, completely unqualified loser the stupid Democrats ever
nominated for President in history. And we
are mad as all Hell that gutless phony sell
out Hillary Clinton failed to take the fight all the way to Denver and the 2008
Democratic Convention instead of letting the crooked and corrupt Democratic Party
Machine of Howard Dean,Nutty Nancy Pelosi,
and Harry Reid cornate Obama their nominee.
As that destroyed the role of the National
Political Convention for all time,if we
let Pelosi,Dean,Reid and Obama get away with it. And that is why millions of former
Clinton supporters and especially women

I can't think of any practical reason Clinton has to mend fences with black, unless she plans to run for President again. And even then, why should she mend fences when her racial strategy worked? It worked spectacularily, in fact. If it wasn't for the Obama campaign's better strategy in the caucus states, she would have won through her strategy of dispensing with the black vote, and stoking racial resentment among the class of whites who see blacks as the competition.
Anyway, what's done is done. Frankly, I don't think she should campaign for Obama, and I say that as a black Obama supporter. I'm sure she'd end up doing more harm than good. She should concentrate on her Senate career (and use the ruthless tenacity she used against Obama against the Republicans!), and not associate herself with the Dem. Presidential campaign.

I agree with you....she should not campaign for him......SHE SHOULD RUN AS AN INDEPENDENT!!!!! Then we'll see how fast he loses her 18 million votes! No matter how much you don't want to admit it, he NEEDS HER VOTERS!
And by the way, as a black OBAMA supporter, do you think he can really relate to you and all the other blacks who voted for him? How many of you live in Million dollar homes? Talk about being used. I will never vote for him....I don't want him or his Rev. Wright anywhere near the Whitehouse. I also don't want his racist, unamerican wife anywhere around it. What an embarrasment she will be....like a bull in a china shop!

"My advice to Clinton was not to accept the VP nomination, even if it was offered, because when he loses 40 states, she will get the blame. That's the mantra from the Democrats-blame Clinton."
This is absolutely, 100% correct. There is no doubt whatsoever that Hillary will be blamed if he looses.
This is all so very disappointing. The Democratic Party leaders, who have always appeared to hold themselves above the questionable and underhanded tactics of the Republicans, have become just like them.
I will be changing my party affiliate to Independent.

I am so fed up with the idiots or Republican trolls who post here claiming the black candidate and his supporters must be racists. Why? Basically, because he is black. That seems to be their "logic."
Re-read what Chris wrote. Blacks supported the Clintons, as expected, until South Carolina. Unforgivable things began to be said there that were clearly playing the race card. Blacks switched irrevocably to Obama. They were pulled to him by his historic candidacy as Catholic voters were pulled to JFK. But unlike that race, they were also pushed away from the Clintons by what the Clintons were doing with race. The push combined with the pull amplified what happened.
It wasn't the Obama campaign operating Bill Clinton's brain and mouth. I am a white Southerner. I understood what he was doing with no interpretation from the media or the Obama campaign. My mother didn't raise a fool.
The racially coded comments went away after South Carolina. Then they came back. Always from the Clinton campaign. It would have been to Obama's advantage never to have this raised, since he relies (successfully) on non-black votes to win. That's simple arithmetic because black voters, of course, are in the minority. It was to the Clintons' advantage for race to come up over and over. And it did. Maybe the Clintons themselves didn't always do it. Sometimes it was their supporters. But they just smiled and nodded and didn't suppress such comments. They drank them up. John Edwards said, if you're voting for me because I'm white, I don't want your vote. He rejected the racist vote. They said nothing, and thus implied the opposite of what Edwards said.
All this will be forgotten, perhaps, if Obama wins, although the Clintons surely will never have quite the same strong base of support among thinking people of any color, for this reason. If he loses, that's it.

Black voters ought to be mending and apologizing for their "black" first voting.
Obama has never done anything for the black community(he's not a member, he was raised white)
It seems all white candidates ought to remember that blacks will only vote for you if their is no black candidate.

Clinton's Exit Speech
Hillary, Bill, Chelsea entering the building.
The elegant lit-from-within columns of the National Building Museum flank a podium surrounded by crowds. The scene is reminiscent of the late 19th century. The place is packed.
Terry McAuliffe moves closer to the front of the stage.
Hands in the air applauding and cheers, a fusillade of cameras. We see Bill's face first, smiling; behind him is Hillary. he pauses to hug McAuliffe. Charles Schumer slaps him on the back with a smile. The camera turns to Hillary as she mounts the podium. A large cheer. Bill, Hillary's mother, Hillary, and Chelsea in a line atop the podium.
A pained joyful almost explosively joyful smile from Hillary as the crowd erupts. The sadness, actual joy at the love, deep bags beneath her eyes, there is a certain stunned quality--a dissociation almost as if it isn't real for her, even as another part of her clearly feels the reality, and trues to manifest the toughness, while deep, the catch in her voice captures--there is no other word for it--the anguish underneath.
"To the young people"...a somewhat raucous cheer.."like Anne Riddel"..."New Yorkers...Arkansans...And all those women"-cheer- "in their 80's and 90's, born before women could vote". An anecdote about this.
Strength pushed forward before anguish.
"18 million of you from all walks of life"--a cheer.
Her voice is a manifestation of willed declaration of what has been created by her, for her, on her behalf, cut through with the depth of controlled tears.
"To help elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States" adding a significant and notable depth to her voice. "I endorse him and put my full support behind him. And I ask all of you to work as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me". Mixture of cheers and sounds of upset.
First the forced smile as she begins to enumerate Obama's merits. Cheeks pulled up by sheer effort. However, then she become serious--and she means it. "Ensuring that Obama enters the Oval Office in 2009"
"The Democratic Party is a family and now its time to restore the values we cherish and the country we love..our paths have merged..united more than ever. So much is at stake." Cut to Chelsea--smile with tears.
"We all want an economy that lifts all or our people...A health care system that is universal, high quality and affordable" cheers " This isn't just an issue for me--it is a passion"--and indeed it is, as she hammers it home with vigour.
Remarkably, as she did in the Senate, you can see her settling in, hardening in, to the task ahead--taking her firm determination, and in the midst of this speech, turning it to the new task--still, in the sadness and exhaustion, willing herself to a new life of purpose, as she has done before in the face of loss.
A nod to rehabilitating Bill: "The man who revitalized the US in two elections is here today."
Remarkable, as through sheer force of will against anguish and depression, she slowly pivots, letting her pose of determination turn the anguished machine to its new task.
"Today, I am standing with Senator Obama to say 'Yes we can!". This is the VP pitch.
"Together, we will live in a stronger America. That's why we need to elect Obama our President."
This is a statue of strength mounted over a soul in anguish. Cuts to Chelsea, manifestly tearful mirror that anguish.
Now the repetition theme " And that is why we must help elect Barack Obama our President".
This is full and unequivocal support--a full corrective to her primary night speech.
"Could a woman really serve as commander in chief? Well, I think we answered that one. " A second VP pitch.
"Now, on a personal note, when I was asked what it meant to be a woman running for President, I always gave the answer that I was proud to be running as a woman, but I was running because I thought I would be the best president.
But I am a woman and I know there are biases out there, often unconscious, and I want to build an America that will embrace the ability of every last one of us....to build that future, we must ensure that women and men alike understand the struggles of their mothers and grandmothers and that women enjoy equal pay and equal respect." The subtle reminder of electoral power--just the slightest foot on the neck of pressure regarding the electoral power of the Clinton bloc and the VP choice, while also noting the genuine and remarkable historical achievement of her run.
"To those who were disappointed that we couldn't go all the way, it would break my heart if I discouraged you in...pursuing any of yours...to do what you want to do shouldn't she say "if I discouraged you to vote for Barack Obama? ) and never let anyone say that you can't or shouldn't go on." The slightest eruption of the earlier indulgences--a muted message with just the slightest subtle echoes of "if disappointed...email my website".
"If we can blast 50 women into space, we will someday launch a woman into the White House" In continuing this theme for quite so long, again, now she has lost the balance a bit and is leaning a bit towards primary night and the focus on her, whipping the crowd up not about unity and the fight ahead, but about what has been denied.
But--as, in the end, is her strength and her way, her burden to bear in this life--in the anguish of the moment, she wills herself to bring it around: "If you find yourself or our supporters saying "If only"...don't go there. Time is too short. And that is why I will work for Barack Obama as our next President, and that is why I hope that everyone of you will join me in that effort."
"To my family, Bill and Chelsea, you mean the world to me" --a cut to Bill looking bitter, angry as he has risen, sits back down. Looking to get even?
She is making the turn:
"As we join forces with Obama's campaign, we will stand united for the values we hold dear...and the country we love. There is nothing more American than that."
"The challenges that I have faced in this campaign are nothing compared to those that millions of Americans have in their lives."
"I will work to ensure that every child lives to grow up to his or her god-given potential...this is now our time to make sure that in this election we add another Democratic President and to take back our country."
"God bless you and God Bless America."
Waving with a smile..fighting back tears for a second.
Summary: A strong speech. From the beginning of her career--from the Gennifer Flowers episodes, through Monicagate, and the need to fight off its legacy during her Senate run, she has always been able to make the turn under adversity. It has been her role--indeed, her role in her home, finding strength and purpose under the pressure of often negative and hostile judgment and rising to a willed purpose, beneath which the suffering is controlled, until that purpose takes over and becomes the foreground, the reality, the new task. Despite the slight tactical engagements and subtle warnings of her electoral power in the last third, a muted indulgence compared to primary night, she gave the speech she needed to--for herself, for the Party, and for history.
Hillary has been able to make this turn before--and with substance, as in the Senate, where she forged unexpected and genuine legislative relationships. She has the strength of creating a willed and direct pragmatism within herself in such moments--and sticking to it. Consequently, this speech advances the possibility of a dream ticket.
Unity gained. Mission accomplished.

With Hillary's gracious speech today, I'm very sure Hillary's popularity will rise tremendously. And Hillary's voters won't vote for McCain. Here is a quote from McCain in 1998: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno."
After McCain's joke about Chelsea, why would any Hillary voters switch to McCain?

What about healing the middle class and blue collar WHITE and ALL other RACES and religions that are not black voters or "black theology?"?
Obama is a David Duke in reverse! He should have been kicked out of the democrat party instead of treated like a King! And his wife is right there with him!
OBAMA WILL NEVER BE THE "AMERICAN" PRESIDENT! He made that choice 20 YEARS ago! He turned his back on America! Read his own books! AND IT is OBAMA's FAULT that this party is NOT uniting behind him! Not Hillary's! But Obama's! He made the choice and now the VOTERS will make their choice! HE IS AN EMBARRASSEMENT to the Democrats and ALL of Americans! And to the EQUALITY and UNITY for ALL AMERICANS that democrats have fought for and Obama and Wright tried to change! NO OBAMA! And this is NOT about Clinton! It is about Obama! Chris, what favorable/unfavorable questions were asked in that poll?
It seems to me that HRC misuse of race will be known as the race factor that appalled more than just AA voters. Paul Begalia talked about eggheads and AAs. Pat Buchanan called us the McGovern and Jackson wings of the party. Every future democratic nominee will know past performance will not forgive current misdeeds for most AA or Jackson voters (pick your term).
I hope it is a lesson that other Democrats take note of and learn well. While you can use racial code words to frame a debate and have appeal to the Strum Thurmond Dixiecrat wing of what used to be the Democratic party, you can also tear down the rest of what is now the Democratic party. It makes no sense to polarize the base before a candidate has to go out to win Independents and Republicans who don't agree with large portions of our diversity agenda.
I think AAs can come around to accepting Bill and Hillary but they are going to have to overcome their capacity to disregard and objectify vast swaths of people. Their propensity to lie when it suits their political interests are epic and unsuitable for future success within the AA community.
We have legacy of forgiving wrong behavior, but they have to admit they are wrong and turn away from the very thing which caused them to stray.

Dear Clinton Supporters,
This was a long, difficult primary season and both sides need to just relax for a few days. I would have supported Senator Clinton if she was the nominee, just like I intend to support Senator Obama.
The vicious attacks by each other supporters serve no purpose other than to prolong the pain that you feel right now. Give yourself a week or two to mourn, and then get back in the game with your energy and passion for our common causes of making healthcare affordable, ending this endless war, protecting a woman's right to choose and stopping our slide into global destruction.
Both candidates had almost identical policy ideas and shared values. If you truly believe in what Senator Clinton believes, you will vote for Senator Obama.
Sincerely,
an Obama supporter

The AA Community is going to be very sorry they backed this unqualified man because he is going to lose big and it has set back race relations in the US 50 years. AA can be racists, too, as Obama and the company he keeps proves. Black racism is just as dangerous as white racism. Can you imagine if the reverse was true and Clinton went to a Church that spoke in this tone about AA? If she had a pastor like Rev. Wright? If Bill Clinton made racist remarks like Michelle? This is the double standard that people in this country are just fed up with. There is no room, especially at the top, for racists, black, white, etc. Putting forth a racist candidate will have turned out to be a big mistake by the Democratic Party. Dean can say anything he wants, since he put the fix in to begin with. He pioneered this mess, but he had plenty of help. I, along with many others, are leaving the Democratic Party after this fiasco. The party pooh bahs stole this nomination. The Clintons have both worked hard on mending fences in dealing with the racist past of this country. Their reward? To be accused of being racist by the a racist himself. It just goes to show you. People are fed with the fact that you can't talk about anything without an Obamatron accusing you of being racist. This is absurd! Welcome to 1972. There are qualified AA candidates that could have run, I am thinking about Harold Ford for one. But no! They put up this racist amateur, a product of corrupt Chicago politics and their political machine and they install Tewes in the DNC. I am going to enjoy watching Obama self destruct. He is already self destructing and he just received the nomination. McCain is even with him, and that is with the economy in shambles. Wait until people really get to know Obama, the more they learn the less they will like him. My advice to Clinton was not to accept the VP nomination, even if it was offered, because when he loses 40 states, she will get the blame. That's the mantra from the Democrats-blame Clinton. I am now an Independent and will vote for McCain. I have no choice. I do not want a racist in the White House.

Who cares about the interest of the party now? We got bigger problems with Barack Obama. The first Black nominee with a reputation for racism against whites, hispanics, Jews just to namme a few.

I would like to have been able to dwell on the remarkable fact that a black man has been nominated by a major party to lead a developed Western nation for the first time in the history of the world.
It says something good about America..
But Hillary Clinton, delivered the most abrasive, self-absorbed, selfish, delusional, emasculating and extortionate political speech I've ever heard.
Barack Obama's speech, which featured a long and gracious nod to Clinton toward the beginning, was posted on various websites as early as 8:10pm East coast time.
Clinton, who did not post her speech in advance, gave Obama a much briefer and more perfunctory nod. She congratulated him on his well-run campaign, but not on his victory, which is historic and assured.
She did not on Tuesday night merely try to make a case for herself as a good vice-presidential candidate.
She held a rhetorical knife to Obama's throat and said, in not so many words: I'm still calling some shots, buddy. You offer me the vice-presidency, or I walk away. But she has also forced Obama into a situation whereby if he chooses her now, he looks weak. So that's the choice she is hoping to impose on the nominee: don't choose me, and Bill and I will subtly work to see that you lose; choose me, and look like a weakling who can't lead the party without the Clintons after all.
Now that's putting the interests of the party first, isn't it?

Chris:
Obama's main problem is this: every year that goes by racism in the white community has been diminishing - come on Chris this is 2008. If Obama had to wait until 2016 there would be so little racism in this country, he would have even less to go on.
Chris, racism in the black community against whites is rampant.
Obvioulsy the older generation is different from the younger generation - however that is progress. Obama's campaign is setting back race relations in this country -
It is all clear.
Obama has clearly identified himself with the radical elements in the black community - the racist elements. I simply believe that identification with this radical fringe movement makes Obama disqualified from being able to represent all the people of the United States. If there was another person from the black community with a different personal history I would make a different evaluation.

Chris, have you or the Washington Post asked Hillary and Obama about this fax on the record. What is going on? What this chaos45i person has posted on your blog for some time now seems to be no joke. What do you get paid for? If you are incapable of getting to the bottom of this story, pass it on to a real reporter. Don't just sit on it! Let's not forget that Hillary is looking so strong against the GOP becuase they have been building her up the last couple of months out of pure self interest - while Obama has been - until recently - fighting a two-front war.
Everyone knew going in to this thing that the Republicans were going to fight tooth and nail to keep the White House (and that they would play dirty) - because it is their only chance to stop the Democrats from pushing their agenda through due to their majority in Congress.
And let's not forget that agenda largely consists of ending the occupation in Iraq, universal health care, tax breaks for the middle class - while rolling back the Bush tax cuts on the upper class in order to cut the deficit and pay for things like improved education and social security.
As an Obama supporter, I can confidently say that if Obama lost to Hillary - I would support her whole-heartedly because I believe that agenda represents the best way forward for this Country.
After 8 years of Bush ramming the Republican agenda at all costs and stopping any legislation that ran contray to it - it is very clear - given the stark results of those policies - that this Country needs to change direction.
And I believe that is worth fighting for - no matter who is President.
Democrats Unite!!

Heck, I'm white and it will take quite a long time before Hillary's reputation is rehabilitated in my eyes. I've never seen one Democrat pour out such garbage onto a fellow party member in all of my days. As far as I'm concerned, Hillary Clinton is no longer part of the Democratic Party. She belongs to a lonely political party of two: she and her it-all-about-us philandering partner.
How low they both have sunk since I voted for Bill twice in the 90s. Breathtaking, and not in a good way.

The cornerstone of your arguments is that "in late May and early June, 58 percent of black voters felt favorably inclined toward Clinton while 36 percent felt unfavorably", so?

GE Nuclear Reactors = NO Containment!
Keith Olbermann: "GE is a good boss."
MSNBC's entertainment today consisted of an "analysis" of Clinton's campaign mistakes.
However, the Punditry forgot to mention her most important mistakes:
1. She neglected to Vote YES on the Cheney Energy Bill (like Obama & McCain).
2. On the campaign trail she said: "nuclear can be considered in the future, if, they can make it cheaper and find a way to safely dispose of the nuclear waste".
3. She got "news" coverage of her campaign cut to next to nothing when she said: I will close the loopholes in the Enron Bill that allow such manipulation of oil & gasoline prices, and, I will close the loopholes in the Cheney Energy Bill.
Thereby making Keith's boss GE not in favor of Clinton for President.
NEXT, you might want to look on a map & see if YOU live near one of GE's OLD nuclear power plants, or, near one of the 29 new nukes the Cheney Energy Bill is providing "for" "US":
According to documents obtained by Public Citizen under the Freedom of Information Act, GE designed nuclear reactors around the world have a design flaw that make it virtually certain (90%) that in the event of a meltdown, radiation would be released directly into the environment and into surrounding communities, leaving the public without any protection.
The NRC acknowledges the reactor containment structure in GE built nuclear power plants did not work, but they licensed the reactors anyway. (Also, a dozen or more GE designed boiling water reactors in the US and abroad have evidence of cracking in the reactor core shroud -- a metal cylinder surrounding the reactor's radioactive fuel rods.)
p.s. Stay away from the Hudson River: Over 1.3 million pounds of PCB's were dropped in the Hudson river by GE.
http://www.cleanupge.org/gemisdeeds.html
p.p.s. In view of the above facts -calls for FEMA to overhaul & update its disaster planning would be in order.
NO Obama! NO NUKES!

DON'T BE SURPRISED IF HILLARY'S "ENDORSEMENT" OF OBAMA COMES OFF AS BEGRUDGING, REPLETE WITH POLITICAL DOUBLE-SPEAK, OBFUSCATION AND BARELY DISGUISED EQUIVOCATION.
THE REASON: SHE STILL BELIEVES THAT OBAMA CAN'T WIN AND RISKS BEING NEUTRALIZED BY FORCES DETERMINED TO KEEP AN INEXPERIENCED LIBERAL ELITIST FROM WINNING THE WHITE HOUSE.
.
The reports of an abrupt, awkward tete-a-tete last night between Hillary and Obama do not auger well for party unity. But what the star-struck mainstream media refuse to understand is that more than political ambition may be involved in the equation.
As stated here before, Bill and Hillary have been there. Hillary reaffirmed her belief in a "vast right-wing conspiracy" in her biography, "Living History." Both Clintons know well the damage that can be done. They believe they have been among the victims of a vicious campaign aimed at preventing any significant alteration of the "new world order" that began in ernest under Richard Nixon and was later advanced under Ronald Reagan and both Presidents Bush.
It's a fair bet that Hillary has tried to get through to Obama on this very point, but that he either refuses to listen to her, or thinks her entreaties stem from political ambition and not a sincere desire to spare the society from another national political defeat/trauma.
The Clintons do believe that Obama will either be co-opted or destroyed. They do sincerely believe that the only way to avoid this ultimate defeat is for them to continue to subvert Obama's candidacy and to prevent his nomination at the convention. Their unstated hope is that the Obama candidacy will wither under the intense scrutiny of the general election campaign -- fueled by new revelations that cast aspersions on Obama's choice of associates, and on intemperate remarks by a certain key family member.
Of course, she can't and won't say this. She will feign support of Obama while working behind the scenes at a last-ditch attempt to prevent him from gaining sufficient votes to win the nomination on the first ballot at the convention. The first stage of her continuing coup attempt involves holding onto her delegates, ostensibly so that all women of the world can hold their heads high as her name is placed in nomination on the first ballot.
This is totally disingenuous. Hillary's candidacy already has proven the possibility of a woman competing for the nation's top job. What more need she prove?
That's where the second stage of Hillary's coup kicks in. Unbeknownst to Obama and the party rank and file, Billary will have worked the backwaters, seeking to convince a hundred or more superdelegates to abstain from voting on the first ballot. The motive: to prevent either Obama or Hillary from securing the nomination the first time around.
After the first ballot, a rumor spreads like wildfire across the convention floor: The indeterminate first ballot vote was a reaction to adverse reports yet to publicly surface about Obama, his associates and his family members.
In the midst of the convention session, the "real story" behind the first ballot vote breaks on the internet. The panic among the delegates spreads; Obama protests "internet lies and gossip" but the delegates believe the damage has been done; this time, they buy the premise that Obama has become unelectable, if not radioactive.
At that point, the third and most audacious stage of the Hillary coup comes to pass: Hillary calls an impromptu press conference, stating that in response to the renewed doubts surrounding the presumptive nominee, Hillary is advising her delegates that she is withdrawing her endorsement of Obama and will decline to release her delegates on subsequent ballots.
But at that juncture, a fourth stage erupts. Delegates activate the "Draft Gore" option that they've kept in their back pocket the whole time, since well before Obama supposedly "clinched" the nomination. On the second ballot, Al Gore's name is placed into nomination by former supporters of Hillary Clinton. The vote is taken; and once again, no one candidate secures the votes required to secure the nomination.
It is at this stage that Obama, realizing that his historic but meteoric candidacy has come to an end, instructs his delegates to vote for Al Gore on the third ballot. They do, and the nomination goes to Al Gore.
The next morning, Gore convenes a press conference with Obama at his side. Gore announces somberly that Obama has turned down Gore's offer of the vice presidential slot, out of recognition that his political capital has been severely diminished. Obama then takes the podium to give his unequivocal endorsement of Al Gore, and he elaborates on his decision to turn down the vice presidential offer.
Gore goes on to take the White House, with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as his veepee. Hillary returns to New York, where she will lose her party's nomination for her Senate seat to a protege of Rep. Charlie Rangel.
She is later named a Supreme Court justice designate by President Gore.
THE ABOVE SCENARIO DOES NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT WHAT WILL HAPPEN... BUT IS A REASONABLE INTERPRETATION OF WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF HILLARY REFUSES TO RELEASE HER DELEGATES PRIOR TO THE CONVENTION.

Of course the Clinton's approval rate went down among blacks, whenever they said something the Obama camp twisted it into something racist. When Clinton said Jackson won SC, he was right, when Hillary said LBJ was needed for the civil right movement to win, she was right etc.
Unfortunately the other side of it that there is more animosity between blacks and whites than it has been in the last 30 years. Now we know what is going on in some black churches, but nobody in politics or in the media has guts to talk about the problem.
Ca you imagine if it was a mostly white church so hostile to blacks? The whole country would condemn it.

No matter how you try to ignore it, the famous memo from the Obama camp proves conclusively that smearing of Hillary and Bill Clinton was done by the Obama campaign on purpose, and it was highly effetive. The Clintons have never been racist and owe the black community nothing.

To hell with the black voters!!!! They are the ones who abandoned Hillary. Just let a black candidate come along and they forget rather quickly all that Bill and Hillary Clinton did for the black community. As far as I am concerned he has set race relations back 40 years! No one could be critical of him without being called a racist....but it's OK for his minister of twenty years to be racist toward whites. I hope they get what they deserve. I for one will sit out this year's vote!

========
Dear Jxxxx,
I have been honored and privileged to work with so many dedicated people on Hillary's historic campaign. Your enthusiastic commitment to her campaign through the primaries has been inspirational.
As you know, Hillary will be holding an event tomorrow in Washington D.C. to thank all of her supporters, to express her support for Senator Obama, and to talk about the issues that have been at the core of her public service, the issues she will continue fighting for.
Hillary wanted to make sure her online supporters were a part of this special event, just as you have been a part of her campaign from the very beginning. So, we will be streaming it live over the website at HillaryClinton.com.
We invite you to visit our website tomorrow, Saturday June 7, at 12 p.m. EDT to watch Hillary speak live.
Thank you for everything you have done for our campaign.

SO CHRIS FALSE CHARGES OF OFFENSIVE COMMENTS REQUIRES FENCE MENDING ?????

For the other reasonable HRC supporters, I encourage you to read some of the better written articles analysing the 2 campaigns. Here is a good one from the LA Times: http://tinyurl.com/64rmfq

Thanks for the link. It's a good analysis, well written and (sadly) better than what I read in WaPo. I particularly like Axelrod's closing comment vis a vis Clinton.

C'mon, Chris, everyone knows only the votes of hardworking whites matter. Black support only matters to Clinton since she might actually have to run for re-election in New York and needs those lazy-but-registered, why'd we give 'em the vote in the first place blacks to turn out and not vote GOP (presuming the Repubs decide not match Hillary in dissing the black vote).
(The irony is that several key staffers and supporters for Clinton are black, including Maggie Williams, who turned around her campaign, Cheryl Mills and Charles Rangel, who was one of the first to encourage her to run for the Senate. Making her off-the-wall statements even more baffling.)
All you Clinton/McCain supporters and Obama haters should read http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/06/AR2008060601470.html?hpid=topnews and then get back to us on how four years of McCain would be preferable to a Democratic Administration under Obama. Jake-D, your party's not giving you much to work with these days.

The black voters look back and say, "Were we just used"? Maybe we were just something for the Clintons to used to their advantage

It will be interesting to see if Senator Clinton has determined for herself 'what she wants'.

I know the tiny subset of unstable, venomous/vociferous Hillary supporters are the natural counterparts to the extreme right wing nut jobs (though funnily enough they rarely realize that!) and may offset the venom from that side - but I believe the nation is tired of both these loose ends.

"Clinton must find a way to bridge the chasm that has opened between the former First Couple and African American voters during this primary process"
Why? She's not going to be on the ticket, so it's not her problem. Identity politics' chickens have come home to roost in the democrat party. bok bok

Seriously, Clinton's success in restoring her image will be inversely proportional to the extent of her overt effort to restore her image. Her late (post-Tuesday) decline was due almost entirely to her insistence that the focus be on her, and more of the same will result in more decline. It's hard to say "humility" and "politician" in the same breath without laughing, but she might want to try at least a smidgen of contrition.
Yeah, that'll happen.

The Clintons owe blacks absolutely nothing. I hope she forever abandons that constituency.Just as Obama has lost educated , upper income white women everywhere, the Clintons should say good riddance to blacks. Write in Hillary!

Before it's all said and done this race will take a lot of twists and turns...hopefully the US will make a informed decision and the media can be a facilitator in this process unlike going into Iraq and in 2000 and 2004... http://www.enewsreference.com
