Pride Festivals

The season of Pride festivals -- a major travel incentive for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people -- has kicked off with events planned in cities throughout North America and in several international destinations. Kimpton, a chain of hip hotels, is offering a 15 percent discount to travelers who book under its Summer of Pride Rate. The rate is good for Kimpton hotels in New York City, Washington and Boston for weekend nights throughout the summer based on availability. Kimpton has some pretty cool brands, including the Muse and 70 Park Avenue hotels in New York, Nine Zero in Boston, and the Topaz, Helix and George hotels in DC. To check out the full list of properties or to reserve a room, check out the Web site www.kimptonhotels.com or call 1-800-KIMPTON. To get the special rate, you have to ask for the PRD code.
New York's Pride events kick off this weekend. Here is a schedule for Pride events in other cities:
Toronto: June 22.
San Francisco: June 23-24
Chicago: June 24
London: June 30
Europride, this year in Madrid, June 30.
For a more complete list, visit www.gay.com.
Has anyone out there traveled to a Pride festival? Is it worth it?

We will be attending Christopher Street Day in Berlin on June 23 as side-step during a longer northern European trip. Used to attend DC Pride when we lived there and have been to parades in New York and Denver over the years. Amsterdam's canal parade is truly special and a great time to be in that city - we scheduled a summer trip a few years ago to overlap that one and really had fun at the street parties. I think pride events can be a good time for gay and lesbian travelers to go see a city they already wanted to see anyway, but the pride events alone won't guarantee a fun trip.

last year was my first gay pride festival, and this year the group that I sing with is IN the parade, AND we're singing at the festival!
