Cheap Hotels in Europe

Gary Lee

Just as we enter the shoulder travel season, when airfares to Europe begin to dip to affordable levels, Eurocheapo, which features budget hotels throughout Europe, is expanding its offerings. The site has has led us to some pretty cool digs at great prices in the major European capitals (examples: the Hippodrome Montmartre in Paris for $106 a night; the Generator in London for $101 a night). Now it's begun featuring budget rooms in Seville, Budapest, Stockholm and some of the popular secondary destinations on the Continent. As most experienced euro travelers know, it's tough to get good tips on one- and two-star hotels and other lodgings in mainstream guidebooks or other online sites.

Besides referring us to decent accommodations at prices under $100, Eurocheapo includes travel guides with lots of other tips for saving money. They tell who does the best local tours, how to get to and from the airport on a budget, and so on.

Unlike many other online guides, Europocheapo relies on local correspondents to vet properties and give up-to-date information. Other sources we have found useful for budget hotels in Europe are Venere.com and the "In Your Pocket" guidebook series, which covers a number of destinations in eastern Europe.

Anyone else willing to share their favorite sources for budget lodging or travel in Europe?

Best booking service for London and the U.K. is www.londontown.com . Lots of reviews, lots of options (from B&Bs to luxury hotels, to small and budget hotels, to mid-range); booking service is quick and easy; changes and cancellations all handled online and smoothly. Very complete list of small and budget hotels in London and all over the UK, many of whom don't list on big sites like Expedia or Hotels.com .

We just booked a cottage in Burgundy for our family of four using www.vrbo.com. The weekly rate of approximately $760 (plus utilities) was very reasonable. We've also used Opodo to book a vacation rental in Germany. You can also book air, hotels, rental cars & packages through them. They're owned by British Airways, Air France, Al Italia, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus, Austrian, Finnair & Amadeus. You can view company information at www.opodo.com though you'll have to book using one of their European sites.
