Our Seven Regional Wonders -- Vote Now!

K.C. Summers

Pyramids, schmyramids. When the "Seven New Wonders of the World" were announced this summer, the United States -- and more important, the mid-Atlantic region -- was shut out. We've set out to rectify that.

As you may have seen in our print edition and in Travel online, we've launched a campaign to name the Seven Regional Wonders of the World. In recent weeks, we asked for your favorite man-made wonders in the mid-Atlantic (anywhere within about a five-hour drive of D.C.), and you responded with some great picks -- some no-brainers, some truly original. The only problem was winnowing them down, but we've gotten the list down to the 20 most popular nominees.

Now it's time to choose the Final Seven. Statue of Liberty? Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel? Fallingwater? Go here to cast your vote. We'll report on the results on Oct. 14, just in time to plan a fall trip to see them all.

You missed two important nominees to the seven regional wonders - the Blue Ridge Parkway, which begins at the southern terminus of the Skyline Drive and is also a national park, stretching 469 miles into North Carolina and a major feat of engineering, landscape design and cultural/environmental preservation - and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., the legendary late 19th century residence of George and Edith Vanderbilt and, among other things, the roots of the U.S. Forest Service and the final project of landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York's Central Park.

Next, I expect a poll to select the Natural Wonders of New Jersey.

Actually, both those sites (the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Biltmore) were nominated by readers. But we only put the top 20 nominees in the poll. So these are your choices.

Where ever one travels no matter what part of the world, there is only one (NO. 1) wonder of the world, and that is the GRAND CANYON, no doubts, if ands about it...I've traveled all over and the Grand Canyon is the one that still takes my breath. I would vote for it, 'till the end of time. and man didn't make it....enough said!

Two sites that I think deserve to be on your list but were overlooked: 1) the Verazano-Narrows Bridge linking Brooklyn and Staten Island (for many years the longest suspension span in the world), and 2) Oriole Park at Camden Yards, which started a whole new era in stadium design.

I agree that the Blue Ridge Parkway along with the Skyline Drive needs to be on the list of the seven wonders of the East Coast. In addition, the historic downtown of Staunton, Virginia, needs to be there. It is a work in progress but the beauty and workmanship that was once seen in the late 1800s and early 1900s is coming back! In this country, we are still tearing down and dissing our architectural past along with the workman who constructed it and it is a wonder to see so much preserved.

Since when is a region the Country? Anyone care to choose a new Capital for the World? Your choices are Pocatella and Boise. Go!
