Travelers in Your Facebook

K.C. Summers

Much to my children's chagrin, I recently joined Facebook. Purely for journalistic reasons of course. I was attracted by the travel buzz around the social networking site, but quickly got sucked into the socializing part -- connecting with friends and friends of friends, seeing what my colleagues are up to, etc. So, guilty as I feel about invading the youngsters' (as Ed Sullivan used to call them) turf, I'm probably there to stay.

But here's the thing. I haven't quite figured out all the vaunted benefits to the traveler. Sure, I've downloaded the obligatory "Where I've Been" map (note to self: visit more large countries) and looked at the Traveler's IQ Challenge and Sidestep's trip-sharing features. But these applications aren't exactly utilitarian.

But maybe I'm missing something. How do you use Facebook for travel? What travel-related applications do you find most useful?

Oh my gosh. I am obsessed with the Traveler IQ Challenge. Witness the post on *my* work blog: http://ngm.typepad.com/pop_omnivore/2007/08/traveler-iq-obs.html

So, I haven't actually found a way to use facebook for travel yet, unless it's to catch up with old friends who I can then get to host me on my next vacation. But it sure is fun for wasting time on the internet!

I just signed up for Facebook last month, and I've become a frequent user of Trips and Where I've Been. And I'm watching all of the trips my son and daughter-in-law are planning with my new grandchild. It's just amazing, really. Who would've thought a 59-year-old grandmother would be thriving on Facebook?

Soon after joining Facebook, I realized why it is so popular. On the surface, it's a simple tool to re-connect and stay in touch with friends. But with the plethora of applications, widgets and other gadgets available -- it's become my own personal portal to the world.

I highly recommmend:
- STA Travel's "My Travel Checklist"
- Where I've Been
- STA Travel's "Trip Countdown"
