Insta-Q&A: Girls-only Getaways in Virginia

She writes: "I have friends in Richmond and Roanoke. We want to have a girls' weekend out where we can both relax and do some fun activities. Could you suggest a place that would require no more than 3-4 hours for any of us to drive? We plan to go in the fall."
My first thought is an elaborate spa experience along the lines of those at Wintergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Staunton. Then there's the fireplace-equipped cottages at Mountain Lake Hotel in Pembroke, where "Dirty Dancing" -- a chick flick if ever there was one -- was filmed. Or the, um, sister islands of Chincoteague and Assateague, where you can...
Okay, I'll cut the crap. I know almost nothing about girls getaways. But I do know girls who like girls getaways, among them Tamra Talmadge-Anderson of Virginia Tourism, who immediately pointed me to the Girls Getaway page on their Web site, which includes the aforementioned suggestions and many more. Um, this may sound stupid...but if the cash is there, why not come up closer to DC?
Lots of parks and museums. Lots of excellent hotels with spas (or just independent spas). Lots of shopping. Cr@ptastic traffic, of course....
The Shenandoah Valley *is* lovely in the fall, but everyone knows it. It can be hard to get nearby hotels and such. So if you don't want to deal with the crush, Charlottesville isn't a bad option.
You can tour various historic houses (and Montpelier is about a 45 minute drive), there's a wine trail, and the scenery is still pretty lovely.

My family lives in Charlottesville and every year we have a "girls getaway". Williamsburg is always great, especially when you throw in the outlet malls. We spent a week in a cabin at Wintergreen one year in the fall. Beautiful, but remember you have to drive/up down the mountain if you're not into hanging out at your cabin.... There are some lovely wineries in the Charlottesville area as well.

How about Luray, VA? Some friends and I stayed at a cabin down there run by an outfit called Shenandoah River Outfitters (I think). The cabin was relatively isolated, but we were able to drive into the downtown area and walk around to the handful of restaurants and shops.
