Way to Go: Our Annual Travel Guide

K.C. Summers

We know, we know. Between airline shenanigans, exorbitant fares, confusing passport requirements, rising fuel costs, terrorist threats and snarky security agents, it's a wonder we all don't stay home. But despite all the above disincentives, we go, because travel is worth it. And to make your next trip go a little more smoothly, the Travel staff has put together a how-to guide packed with hints, tips and suggestions on how to travel wisely and well from the Washington area to just about anywhere. In this Sunday's special Way to Go issue, you'll find:

* Our picks for the top travel Web sites.
* Answers to your most commonly asked travel questions, based on our weekly chat.
* A guide to tour operators: What they are, how to find them and why you might want one.
* When you need a passport, and how to get it.
* 20 great Escapes from the Washington area.
* Insider tips from our What's the Deal? columnist on how to find bargains.
* A guide to low-cost carriers abroad.

Print it, save it, memorize it, quote it, use it. Just keep traveling.

And after you've checked it out (it may already be on our home page as you read this): Did you find our guide useful? Anything you'd like to see in there that we left out? Let us know and we'll consider it for next year's guide.

This looks great .. another section for me to save.

For those looking for organized tours, one website that I would like to recommend for tours is: affordabletours.com

They specialize in many of the major tour providers in the US, Europe, Asia, South Pacific, etc. They give a discount on each trip. from their home page you can select the area of the world to visit and they will show you all of the tours that are available. We booked Central Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and now a river cruise through them.

I am looking forward to seeing what others may suggest as places to include next year.

Great job!

For anyone interested in Eco-Tourism, they should be aware that there are legitimate tour companies and illegitimate. The difference between them may actually take the "eco" out of your trip. I made a blog entry about how to find reliable companies, the golden rules of eco-tourism, and how to make sure vacation spots stay natural.

Congrats on another great resource for us!! The one thing I'd like to see you address is something that was in a travel round-up several years ago--a comparison of the different companies offering transportation to the airport, similar to what you did in this issue for public transportation. I think you picked the top 3-4 shuttle services for each airport, and contrasted them with cab fares as well as the Washington Flyer bus. It was through that article that I found out about Royal Airport Shuttle which serves Bethesda and has been a standby for my family ever since.

Great section - a definite keeper. I think of myself as travel-savvy, but you and your team manage to come up with a slew of sites and other info that is news to me. Can you get Cindy Loose to contact me? I need info from her about her participation in a travel-related forum.
