What's the Deal: The Luck of the Irish

Aren't we glad that Aer Lingus came back to town?

The airline bailed out of BWI, ending its nonstop flights to Shannon, Ireland, several years ago, but then restarted nonstop service from Washington Dulles to Dublin last year. And now it's one of the few offering decent sale fares for summer travel. And by summer, we mean July and August, not the mid-June end dates that several airlines are touting as summer sale fares. Hurry -- sale ends today. (Blackout dates June 11-18; travel during week is cheaper than weekends).

For July and August, the round-trip fare is $884, including all taxes. For June, it's $684 round trip, including taxes. While those aren't the fares we cheapskates remember from just a year or two ago, they're great for this summer. Dublin may not be where you want to end up, but from there, several discount airlines go to different cities throughout Europe. Ryanair, Centralwings, SkyEurope, Flybe and Germanwings all fly from Dublin.

Price out your trip from Washington to your final destination, but then price it out via Aer Lingus to Dublin and a discount airline to your endpoint. You may save a few bucks, although connections may not be as convenient.
