'Feelin' Good' -- Bad Idea

Sing "Feelin' Good" on "American Idol" and you are going to get the hook.

Leslie Hunt and AJ Tabaldo both sang "Feelin' Good" this week. Both are gone now. We rest our case.

Nick Pedro and Alaina Alexander are gone too. True, they didn't sing "Feelin' Good" but they compensated by being extra lousy this week, Alaina with the Dixie Chicks' "I'm not Ready to Make Nice" and Nick with "Fever."

There were no surprises to this week's eliminations, which is not to say the worst singers got the sack. An "Idol" producer had promised us a surprise on this week's elimination show. He was wrong. A surprise would have been Antonella Barba being voted out by viewers, or Sanjaya Malakar. Because, while bad, they're also Untouchable.

Antonella's got those clothing-challenged pictures of her making the rounds on the Internet -- though experts insist the nastiest of the bunch can't be her because the earlobes don't match and she's never had acrylic tips on her fingernails. Even so, America needs Antonella as it searches for a new bad girl, what with Britney and Lindsay in rehab, and Paris heading to jail.

Sanjaya has no naughty photos we know of, just volumes of lovely pettable hair and the good sense to act shocked he wasn't dumped this week for singing "Steppin' Out with My Baby" while dressed like Michael Jackson. The judges called it weird. They were right.

Maybe the surprise was Kellie Pickler. Pickler, last season's goofy blonde from Albemarle, NC, has made a return visit to "American Idol" to sing a song, promote her new album, and show off the girls, which she cutely calls "shoes" when show host Ryan Seacrest asks what she's bought with the money from her record contract.

"Just shoes?" Ryan asks, while the cameraman, who's apparently the only one noticing Pickler's new double-D's, points the camera at her silver pumps and hangs on for dear life.

Oh dear, I didn't get the "shoe" thing - probably because I was so mesmerized by the boob job. (What did she sing again?) (And did she get a bum job too?)

Now THAT's the snark we're looking for!

Posted by: JB | March 2, 2007 9:29 AM

I don't even know who Kelly Pickler is, but when they were showing the replay on the news this morning, even I knew what "shoes" meant.

Posted by: dym | March 2, 2007 9:34 AM

oh - I will miss Nick. What a cutie - I had a such a crush on him. None of the other guys are nearly as adorable. How could Antonella possibly stay? She could barely get those words out. Ugh.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 2, 2007 9:44 AM

Not only did L'il Hickler get an expensive "shoe" job, apparently she also used some of the money to hire a stylist who thought that making her over as one of the lesser Mandrell sisters would be a good idea. Not a good use of Daddy's bail money, Kelly.

Welcome back, Lisa, this is what we come here for! After the show last night, I have to assume that the producers pulled Antonella aside and said some version of the following: "We are playing with fire, here, girl. If ONE more photo pops up online that you don't tell us about or if ONE more item comes out about you being a skank you will be off this show faster than you can say, 'Sure, I'd love another beer and would you like to see my panties?'" American Idol is running along a razor edge and it's only a matter of time before some organization starts looking hard at the African-American contestants that have been booted versus the Caucasian ones. Frenchy and her family must be seething at the injustice.

Chris C. you must not have read the Reliable Source chat from Wednesday that mentions why Frenchie and Antonella's situations are different. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2007/02/27/DI2007022701272.html Read all the posts there are a few discussions about this matter. Also, with the internet these days, any picture you have taken of you at any point in your existence can show up on the Internet, that is different then choosing to strip for money.

Meanwhile. Whomever is voting for Sanjaya to stay each week (as well as Antonella for that matter) really needs to get their ears checked.

Posted by: RWV | March 2, 2007 10:35 AM

check out votefortheworst.com and maybe it will help you understand the antonella, sanjaya, and sundance situation!

this is why i don't like ai (though i like it for a lot of other reasons)... it's NOT a singing competition, it's a popularity contest.

Posted by: nonvoter | March 2, 2007 10:40 AM

Are my antenna way too sensitive, or am I not the only one who winced at your reference to the only contestant of Indian descent as a capital-U "Untouchable?" Ouch!

Posted by: JD | March 2, 2007 10:50 AM

www.votefortheworst.com makes sense in its attempts to flood the voting for the worst, but truly as they make fun of American Idol for its _____ (fill in the blank) contributions to american society. Vote For the Worst should remember that Carrie Underwood, Fantasia, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson are laughing all the way to the bank. I think a lot of people would sell their pride to the American Idol machine because America's insatiable need for their pop culture fix keeps it worthwhile. Now, if we could form a news blackout like the AP did... http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/03/02/ignoring.parishilton.ap/index.html
Maybe we'd get somewhere. Vote For the Worst needs to admit they need American Idol just like America needs American Idol (if for different reasons).

Posted by: RMV | March 2, 2007 11:03 AM

I thought Pickler looked like a poor girl's version of Christina Aquilera -- hideous. Her singing is as lousy as ever!

The elimination of Leslie and Alaina was spot on. Hopefully, Antonella and Haley will go next week. I was surprised that AJ got the boot over Sunjaya though.

JD, your sensitivity radar overshot your reading radar. Antonella and Sunjaya were both referred to as Untouchable and I don't think the word was referencing a caste system.

Posted by: pnina | March 2, 2007 11:04 AM

I'd hate to think votefortheworst is making a difference, but its the only logical explanation. There's no other way Sanjay and Antonella would still be on.

I'll miss Nick too. He'd never win, but he is gorgeous. Pity the same can't be said for any of the other guys.

I hope the judges will be extra harsh next week, particularly Paula who can't say anything bad. Remember when "you made it your own" was her way of saying 'not so good'

I find that I'm caring less about the outcomes, but I'll still watch to see Melinda sing.

RWV, I didn't know that Frenchie was posing on demand for customers at an adult site, I thought she had some photos taken and they were just used on the site. If the info in the Reliable Source chat is accurate, that is a different thing entirely. However, the photos that were taken in front of the fountain of Antonella look quasi-professional to me: they look like samples to be submitted to a lad's mag such as FHM or Maxim and some of them are certainly revealing. The drunken sorority girl photo are what they are and the X-rated shots seem to have been debunked as fakes -- the fountain shots are the ones that, in my opinion, put Antonella's continued involvement in AI highly questionable.

You're right about Sanjaya, though, he stinks. :-)

Posted by: Chris C | March 2, 2007 11:35 AM

Kellie Pickler didn't get "new shoes," she just got fat!!

Posted by: nushooz | March 2, 2007 11:43 AM

"Are my antenna way too sensitive, or am I not the only one who winced at your reference to the only contestant of Indian descent as a capital-U "Untouchable?" Ouch!"

Well, she referred to both Antonella and Sanjaya as untouchable...

Regardless, is the use of a capital U offensive to people of Indian descent? What am I missing?

Posted by: maw | March 2, 2007 11:51 AM

Kellie Mae Pickler got fat, got new "shews", AND a nice pair of new girls. She should have spent less on the shews and more on the stylist though. Yuck. I liked her during the show; but was appalled last night. Uninspired at best. I think even she is getting tired of her schtick.

What's up with Ryan's thinly-veiled reference to the boob job though? So not appropriate!

Posted by: Meg in PA | March 2, 2007 12:04 PM

maw,
Untouchables is the lowest level in the Hindu caste system. Higher levels of castes are not supposed to touch them at all.

I dont' think the reference was meant in that way.

Posted by: RA | March 2, 2007 12:09 PM

Well, I didn't catch on to Seacrest's boob job suggestion, but definitely kept thinking "Did she have those monsters when she was a contestant?!"

I'm surprised there was no mention of the blubbering that overtook everyone last night. Whats-her-face couldn't even sing her song (thankfully) and they kept showing Sundance bawling away, too. My fave part was when Leslie, in her farewell performance, changed the lyrics to "I shouldn't have scatted!" and something else before they cut to commercial.

Posted by: kc | March 2, 2007 12:24 PM

Why didn't Kellie get a Dolly Parton wig and just go all the way?

Antonella may be untouchable for the time being, but as the field narrows it will be harder and harder to overlook her absolutely terrible "singing." Her legs are long, but not that long.

Posted by: Brian | March 2, 2007 12:26 PM

Kelly Pickler was horrid. How old is she? 20 going on about 45 I'd say. Any bets on when she starts showing up in low-budget porn? Or did that happen already?

Votefortheworst must be behind Sanjaya (and Antonella). You'd think even people who support that site's cause could see how cruel and inhumane it is to the rest of us to keep him on. Oh the horror!

The sad part about Antonella is that she actually believes she belongs up there (note her feistiness after Simon's critique of her). At least Sanjaya has the good sense to know he sucks.

Posted by: bigeugene | March 2, 2007 12:26 PM

If Kellie had those "monsters" while she was a contestant, she would have won!

The longer Antonella stays around, the more pictures that are likely to pop up. But it would make DC more interesting if she was back at school.

Posted by: Mike | March 2, 2007 12:28 PM

kc, she said that America does not like jazz. Please, people please, for those of us w/ a little bit of and ear for actual talent...stop voting for Sanjaya, he makes my head hurt.

Posted by: nay | March 2, 2007 12:48 PM

Kellie's double-Ds were definitely the surprise that the producer promised.

Posted by: Laura | March 2, 2007 1:06 PM

I thought Pickler did a great job of singing; much better than when she was a contestant.

She looked totally fake, however; dripping in obvious record company $$

I'd love to polish her "shoes" ...LOL

Posted by: Paul Absolut | March 2, 2007 1:24 PM

I've already had this argument with people. I don't think Kellie Picker had her boobs done. Did anybody notice how much WEIGHT the girl gained? She has a lot more junk in the trunk now too, and I think the boobs came with it. It never occured to me that they were fake. I think they actually look natural.

Posted by: Not Fake! | March 2, 2007 1:42 PM

That's what I said before! And her face is totally rounder now, too. Her awful new hair doesn't help. But yeah, she has definitely plumped. Must be all that sushi and calamari she's eating now...

Posted by: nushooz | March 2, 2007 1:51 PM

RA,

Leslie's improverisation was pretty funny too, I agree! She droned, "why did I decide to scat? America aint care for jazz..." as the show came to an end.

Posted by: BlazeJag | March 2, 2007 2:07 PM

Following up on your chat today...Payless is a drug store in CA. So much bigger and nicer than CVS...then again, anything would be.

Posted by: payless | March 2, 2007 3:12 PM

Sanjaya, has got to be the poster-child for "Vote for the Worst"

HOW did that goof beat out the Phlipino guy? WTF?

It's going to be entertaining seeing him warble his way through this competition.

LMAO

Posted by: Paula Absolut | March 2, 2007 3:57 PM

Kellie Pickler is just the next blonde disaster waiting to happen, following on the heels of Anna Nicole Smith, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

What most people don't understand about the popularity contest is that a few people can make a huge difference. There are software tools out there (check out dialidol.com) that allow someone to autodial for 2 hours straight for certain people. The young teeny-bopper contingent out there that are very computer savvy want someone young and are voting like crazy for Jordin and Sanjaya.

There are two suggestions that I hope that AI makes in future seasons that would help. One is to limit the number of votes from each phone number (something like 10 votes per phone number?) which can be done by computer. You can either use the last 10 votes or the first 10 votes based on date/time stamping (or some other arbitrary number). This stops the ballot-stuffing that helps keep bad singers in the mix. The other was suggested on an AI blog that AI take the bottom-3 and allow the judges to decide which 2 of the bottom-3 to eliminate. This allows there to be some creative judgement and not purely popularity that governs the advancement.

If you think that each person is hand dialing (or redialing) and only voting a couple of times (or even a dozen times) then you don't understand how the few dominate the many in the computer age.

Posted by: DadWannaBe | March 2, 2007 4:42 PM

1. AI has never been a singing contest, it's ALWAYS been a popularity contest. Anyone remember Season One when Nikki McKibben made the final three and looked like she might beat out Kelly Clarkson?

2. You can go into any Baptist church choir in the country and find two or three Lakisha Jones or Jennifer Hudsons. If you truly wanted the "best" singers, you'd have ten 250lb. R&B mamas every year. But, the producers are looking for "pop idols". That's why Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Clay Aiken are the only ones selling records.

3. The show has a definite bias against Latino and Asian contestants. No one could hear AJ's singing signoff last night and not know he got jobbed.

4. We knew Sanjaya Malakar was going to be around a while after Ryan announced after week one voting that he placed in the top four.

He is benefiting from rule #1 (above). He has that weird Michael Jackson freakshow pop vibe going, that young girls seem to love. Let's face it, AJ is gone in spite of his talent, while Sanjaya remains because young girls probably like his hair, and they're the ones willing to text-message 5 million times.

5. It's a shame they are determined to have the top six guys and top six girls when it should be a mix of roughly 9 girls and 3 guys. But, I bet they're afraid of what ruined Nashville Star, with girls dominating the phone lines so all the female contestants are gone by week three, leaving only a gaggle of mediocre guys.

Then they have to deal with the Jennifer Hudson-like aftermath of gal contestants like early-exiting Nashville Star's Miranda Lambert going on to sell a ton of records while the guy winners fade into oblivion.

6. No way Melinda Doolittle doesn't win it all. Not only does she have the best voice, she has that All-American story going for her of the understudy (background singer) getting her chance when the headliner falls ill.

Posted by: filmex | March 2, 2007 5:11 PM

filmex -- dead-on with point #6, but I'll go you one further: Melinda's story is "Dreamgirls" with the ending all of America really wanted -- the Jennifer Hudson character gets to become the star.

Posted by: WoW | March 2, 2007 11:52 PM

Lisa, isn't this blog called On TV?

There's certainly more than Idol on MY TV.

You're not dating one of the Murdochs, are you? Lachlan maybe?

Please, let's stop the madness and write about something, anything, else.
