A Day of Remembrance
By Shamus Williams
It was a beautiful day on campus: sunny and not a cloud in the sky. It is a far cry from the cold and snowy conditions that confronted students one year ago. And like the weather, today was a much more beautiful celebration than the one that was experienced a year ago.
It was still a solemn day, though, as students, faculty, staff, alumni and everyone associated with the school gathered to remember the 32 lives lost just one year ago today.
President Charles Steger made a powerful opening statement to start the ceremony. He touched on everything from the lives lost to the powerful Hokie spirit that was on display today.
The names of the 32 victims were then called out, with a short description of their loves, passions and lives. It was a moving tribute to those people, with many tears shed by everyone in attendance.
Gov. Tim Kaine finished the ceremony with a moving speech of his own. He talked about the emotions being felt by all and how too many lives were lost entirely too soon. He asked everyone in attendance to live life to the fullest because it is too precious to be wasted.
Governor Kaine's remarks were amazing. He has been with the Hokie nation every step of the way. It was remarkable for him to be so close to our community. I will always feel tremendous respect for him, for the way he handled our situation with class and reverence.
All in all, it was one of the toughest days of my life. I have been dreading this day for weeks now, hoping it would just pass by.
Tomorrow, we will head back to classes. Graduation is right around the corner, and with that comes a new life and new beginnings. But I will never forget the 32 lives that have touched me so deeply. I will surely never forget April 16, 2007.
