Del. Kirk Cox Hit by Car; Jody Wagner 'Thankful'
Virginia House Majority Whip M. Kirkland Cox (R-Colonial Heights) was struck by a car this morning near the State Capitol, but escaped serious injury.
Cox was trying get to a budget presentation by Virginia finance secretary Jody Wagner when he was hit. Midway through Wagner's talk to the House Appropriations Committee, Chairman Vincent F. Callahan Jr. (R-Fairfax) interrupted Wagner to tell the audience that an ambulance was responding to the Capitol grounds to treat Cox.
But 15 minutes later, Cox walked into the committee room and took his seat.
"Your purple heart will be forthcoming," Callahan said.
Wagner, who was being grilled by delegates about the state's $600 million budget shortfall, then asked Cox whether the driver stopped.
Cox, one of the most conservative members of the General Assembly and a possible future speaker of the House, said the driver did stop. He added he felt a little banged up, but did not think he needed medical attention. "I felt like I was in a football play where I was way up in the air and flipped," Cox said.
He then showed Wagner a piece of paper and said, "The question I was going to read you now has a hole in it, so I can't read it."
Wagner's then joked, "So I have to thank the driver then."

Was Cox crossing at the intersection or was he jaywalking?

That intersection is really dangerous, since many drivers don't actually seem to think the red light applies to them.

Drive should have mistakenly backed up onto him afterward. Too bad he wasn't walking with more of his party buddies.

Knowing the political party affiliation of the driver might tell us more about the current political climate than all the campaign commercials we will see!
