Democrats Take Aim at Drake, Goode Over Gas
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is launching radio ads this week against U.S. Reps. Thelma D. Drake and Virgil Goode, both Republicans who represent Virginia districts that could be up for grabs in the fall.
In the 60 second ad, an impersonator of President Bush accuses Drake or Goode of siding with "Big Oil."
The ad that will run in Virginia Beach, which Drake represents, begins when the Bush impersonator gets an answering machine message at Drake's office.
"Drakey, W here," the impersonator states. "Wanted to thank you for continuing to support the Big Oil Energy agenda. 'Preciate you voting to keep giving billions in tax breaks to big oil companies. Sure, gasoline is over four bucks a gallon and the oil companies are making record profits, but what's good for Big Oil is good for America, right? I guess that's why they call us the Grand Oil Party. Heh, heh, heh."
It continues, "Seriously, Thelma, I know I can always count on you. Gotta go. Bye now."
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md), chairman of the DCCC, said the ad will be run in 13 districts nationwide over the July 4 holiday, including the two in Virginia.
"This Independence Day, the American people deserve to be liberated from the Big Oil policies of President Bush and the rubber stamp House Republicans," Van Hollen said in a statement.
Julie Shutley, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, responded, "You would have to hire an impersonator to spew out the hypocrisies in this ad since nobody could probably do it with a straight face."
"Not only did over 70 Democrats vote for the same energy legislation, including half of the Democrat leadership, but even the Democrats' own Presidential nominee, Barack Obama, voted in support of it," Shutley said. "The Democrat-led Congress is back to casting blame and offering no solutions despite repeated promises of a 'commonsense plan' to lower gas prices. With gasoline up over $4, the American people are waiting."
