Davis Ally to Lead Va. 'Victory 08' Campaign

Tim Craig

The Republican National Committee announced today that Nicholas Meads will be the director of the party's coordinated campaign in Virginia this year.

Meads, who served as Rep. Tom Davis's 2006 campaign manager, has been active in Virginia GOP political campaigns since 2003, when he graduated from the College of William and Mary. After graduation, Meads managed David Kennedy's unsuccessful campaign to become a state delegate, representing Alexandria. The following year, Meads began working for Davis, serving as his deputy campaign manager. Through his work for Davis, Meads was also involved in former state Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis's reelection effort in 2007.

Experience on Meads resume also includes serving as former attorney general Jerry W. Kilgore's (R) Fairfax County field director during his unsuccessful bid for governor and work for Supervisor Michael C. May (R-Occoquan).

As director of Virginia's Victory 08 program, Meads will help coordinate Republican resources on behalf of Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee for president. In addition, he will assist the reelection efforts of seven incumbent Republican members of Congress. This work will include, helping to retain Tom Davis's seat in the 11th District.

Davis is retiring, giving Democrats a prime opportunity to pick up a seat in increasingly Democratic Northern Virginia. Republicans will also be fighting to retain the seat of retiring U.S. Sen. John W. Warner's (R-Va).

"As election day draws closer and we continue to grow the Republican National Committee's presence across the country, I feel confident Americans will embrace John McCain and Republican candidates up and down the ballot on Election Day because of the hard work and positive message we are spreading to voters," Mike Duncan, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said in a statement announcing Mead's appointment.

Bring it on. The national and state republican party may well rue the day they turned their back on Davis for senate.
