GOP Mocks Brian Moran

The Republican Party of Virginia is seizing on Del. Brian J. Moran's decision to pay Del. Lionell Spruill Sr. (D-Chesapeake) $7,500 a month to be an "outreach coordinator" for his campaign for governor.
In an article published today in the Virginian Pilot, Spruill is quoted as saying his salary is "no big money."
"Anyone could have matched it," Spruill said of the $90,000-a-year salary.
Spruill is vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Moran (D-Alexandria), who is running against Sen. R. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) for the Democratic nomination for governor, is chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.
The Virginia GOP today noted the average annual wage in Virginia is $43,958. The average teacher makes $50,633, according to the Virginia Department of Education.
"Perhaps the Moran campaign would be well-served to take a look at this website," the GOP said in a statement, referring to Parade Magazine's annual salary survey. "Is the Moran campaign still sure that $90,000 a year is 'no big money?'"
The GOP failed to note the average political consultant in Virginia makes $70,000 a year, according to Simplyhired.com.
"If Republican leaders were so concerned about working men and women in Virginia, then they would have supported Delegate Moran's efforts to raise the minimum wage" to $7.25 an hour over two years, said Jesse F. Ferguson, a Moran spokesman.
