Abramoff Scandal Reaches To Albany
Federal agents yesterday raided the offices of a New York congressman tied to disgraced superlobbyist Jack Abramoff, as federal officials prepare for the former Republican power broker to be sentenced.
Files and computers were collected Tuesday from Powers & Company, a Albany, N.Y., lobbying firm, The Albany Times Union first reported.
The New York Times later reported that as part of the Abramoff scandal, investigators have reviewed the propriety of consulting payments made to the wives of several members or former members of Congress, including the ex-wife of former Rep. John Sweeney (R-N.Y.). Sweeney's ex-wife, Gayle, worked for Powers & Company until last year and the firm's owner, William D. Powers, was a longtime political patron of the congressman.
While serving a nearly six-year sentence federal prison in Cumberland, Md., Abramoff has been cooperating and received frequent visits from federal investigators who have secured convictions of more than a dozen lobbyists and government officials.
A House oversight committee tomorrow is scheduled to review a draft report on Abramoff's ties to the White House.
