OFF/beat Launches
We've launched "OFF/beat," a blog about weird news by Emil Steiner, who plans to scour the site and Internet each day for jaw dropping, barely believable stories that also happen to be true
Steiner -- whose interest in the strange-but-true began in college -- started his writing career as an investigative reporter in Prague, covering the fleecing of tourists by taxis and hotels. He has written for 34th Street, Novy Prostor, Vulgo, and The Washington Post.
His first novel, Drunk Driving, was published in 2005, and he joined washingtonpost.com as a producer earlier this year.
Steiner encourages readers to let him know if they see a bear riding a bike or meet a dog with a particularly high credit score. "Funny news is everyone's guilty pleasure," he says. "And so the goal of "OFF/beat" is to create a shared repository for anyone who wants a quick laugh at work or a memorable story for happy hour."

Let me add my voice to the questions about Miss Emily and "The Debate". You've left us hanging for almost a month with no explanation. Will someone please let us know if Emily's OK, and if "The Debate" blog is going to continue. Otherwise I might actually have to work at work (shudders).

Emily hinted there will be an explanation about her absence, but that's weeks ago.
God, hope that when her dog died it didn't pull her heart strings out that bad (notice she's an avid pet lover). I know those things are very hard to take, it's almost like losing a child. :(
Please, WP, let us know what's going on. "The Debate" is a good blog and hate to see it pulled.

Hello everyone. Welcome to the pirate debate.
Initial debate subject:
According to the National Priorities Project's Cost of war Web site (costofwar.com), the dollar cost of the war, when I last visited (a few minutes ago), was $298,359,026,901.
No successful infrastructure projects, no oil revenue, no peace, no end in sight.
Where is the money going?

Oh thank you Mr. Specter......it appears that this is just another way for this administration to not follow a law....once again. When is this type of 'action' going to be put to an end? Why are we not hearing more noise in MSM about the many, many discrepancies in this mess of so-called democratic government.....where are those really good reporters of the real news? Please - we need you.

Smafdy,
Hear anything about Emily? If not a pirate debate sounds good (keep the spirit alive). ;) Maybe the rest can come on over, since it's being used for spam anyway.
Emily at times asked up to help her with a topic -- there's a big WAR going on that is a great debate!! ;)

Oops, finally saw Emily's goodbye article (for whatever reason it didn't refresh, even though I came back to check).
Looks like we'll have to find something to debate about, ourselves. Someplace without the spam.

What is happening to your web pages? Yesterday when I went to an article link, I had to scroll down to see the article because the frames that are normally along the left side of the page where now acorss the entire page and at the top. This is not a good change. You should never make your readers hunt for the article. It did not happen on every link, but on many. Perhaps someone is messing with your site. I hope this is not done intentionally by the Post. Please fix this. Thank you

What happened to Emily Messner's "The Debate" blog?
Any notice of what's going on? Maybe something like "she's on vacation" or "on assignmnent"? So us folks that posted there can at least know what's going to happen with her blog.
Anyone at WP who can clue us in?
