Girls Don't Swim
View Enlarged Photo and CaptionAs I was traveling down the coast, eastward from Weligama, I stopped at a pretty little fishing village called Sudawella, which was hard-hit by the tsunami. (Geoffrey has a project to rebuild boat engines there.)
Here at least, teenage boys were playing raucously in the water, an encouraging sign less than two months after the tsunami. But they didn't venture very far before running back to the safety of the beach. And when I asked if girls ever joined them, they laughed dismissively. "Girls don't swim."
