Draft Night blog

Is Julian Wright going to fall to the Wizards? That's the buzz here in the press room at VC. So far, no real shocks though that proposed Seattle/Boston trade is interesting. Clearly new Seattle GM Sam Presti wanted Ray Allen out of there to get a clean slate. Makes you wonder whether Rashard Lewis is next in a sign-and-trade. I like Minnesota taking Corey Brewer over his Florida teammate Noah. I do wonder whether someone had to tie Kevin McHale down so he wouldn't take Spencer Hawes.....

That was a good deal for the Sonics. What the hell were the Celtics thinking with that trade. I hope the Wizards don't take Jason Smith.

al thornton! if not him a real glass cleaner!!!! they need a glass cleaner!

Posted by: dealer | June 28, 2007 8:55 PM

I was really wishing the Clips chose hometown boy Nick Young, now it looks like we might get him.

Posted by: The Owl Wizard | June 28, 2007 9:04 PM

I'll bet they take Sean Williams. The Wiz luv big guy who are just a tad slow.

Posted by: Mike | June 28, 2007 9:05 PM

Probably Young or Crittenton for the Wizards, right?

Posted by: George Templeton | June 28, 2007 9:07 PM

NICK YOUNG!

NICK YOUNG!

Posted by: Raman Ghuman | June 28, 2007 9:08 PM

Not a good sartorial choice for Nick Young. White jacket, black pants. Caron will have to give him some pointers on the suit combo.

Posted by: George Templeton | June 28, 2007 9:14 PM

Nick Young it is. Bye Bye Deshawn and Jarvis. Another guy with a score first mentality who needs to work on his D. Oh well.

Posted by: DC Man88 | June 28, 2007 9:14 PM

What do the regulars think of the Zach Randolph deal? I like it for the Blazers because of Channing Frye and cap room for next summer. The Knicks get the best player but he is also trouble and in New York trouble can find you very easily.

Posted by: George Templeton | June 28, 2007 9:18 PM

Yeah but now the Knicks are a playoff caliber team in the East. What exactly is Portland doing? I guess they expect Francis to contend for a starting spot this year? I just don't see why you make this move exactly

Posted by: The Owl Wizard | June 28, 2007 9:20 PM

I had my hopes up that it would be Julian Wright, but I'm very pleased with Nick Young.

Posted by: Sean | June 28, 2007 9:24 PM

Portland gets cap room in the summer of 2008. Steve Francis' contract expires then. And if Oden is really impressive they might lure a pretty nice free agent next summer.

Posted by: George Templeton | June 28, 2007 9:32 PM

Young Gun will be okay. No upgrade in defense, nor ballhandling. But all those shots Jarvis missed-- Young'n hits those.

He'll play well next to AD and DS-9. Has a decent 3pt shot though he prefers to finish underneath or mid-range. We finally get an alley-oop threat.

I still would have preferred to trade down and pick up a couple picks.

Posted by: doclinkin | June 28, 2007 9:33 PM

The Knicks/Trailblazer's move looks like a good one on paper for both teams.

Randolph and the NYC scene may be a dangerous mix, but he should take pressure off Curry if he can stay out of trouble off the court. Plus the Knicks had the same player in Francis and Marbury. So they move a good player at a position where they had a surplus in exchange for a real need. On Portland side Frye is young with a good upside plus Francis gives them a legitimate threat in the back court. Francis probably isn't a long-term answer for Portland, but he'll take some pressure off Oden over the short-haul.

As far as Nick Young goes, hard to argue with the pick. If Stevenson re-signs he'll remain the starter--at least until Young earns the spot. I don't see Young starting in year 1, but he's the right pick.

"Portland gets cap room in the summer of 2008. Steve Francis' contract expires then. And if Oden is really impressive they might lure a pretty nice free agent next summer."

George, I understand the logic there, but if the Rashard Lewis sign and trade, or the Chicago deals were still a possibility, don't you at least hold out for those? The trade doesn't include any picks so why rush and not get full value for a 22/10 inside guy? Makes no sense!

Posted by: Anonymous | June 28, 2007 9:36 PM

Sorry that was me above.

Posted by: The Owl Wizard | June 28, 2007 9:39 PM

I see your point on that. But I think from their standpoint they just wanted him gone and when you consider the baggage he brings, maybe the Blazers think that it gets tougher to trade as the summer goes on. And if you are Seattle and do you really want Zach Randolph when you are trying to get a new arena (unless you don't want to stay).

Posted by: George Templeton | June 28, 2007 9:41 PM

trade Brendan Todd for a second rounder. If not, trade him for cash. HE NEEDS TO GET OUT OF HERE.

Posted by: trade BTH | June 28, 2007 9:42 PM

I agree, Haywood needs to be gone. But, what do we do about low-post play? We have no rebounding on the whole team, how do we fix that?

Posted by: Aven | June 28, 2007 9:51 PM

So it's Young...Makes us more athletic and looks like he can hit open shots. But boy we still have defensive deficiencies. I still think Haywood, Jarvis and maybe even Daniels have value and Eg is trying to move them. Our roster is still weak at the 5 and heavy at the 4 with folks that we hope can rebound for us.

Posted by: BmoreRev | June 28, 2007 9:53 PM

How do we not have a real article posted about Nick Young yet? There were like 5 guys the Wizards were going to take. . . please have a more substantive article ready next time. It's an hour past the pick already

Posted by: Anonymous | June 28, 2007 9:57 PM

I think Owl raises a good question above -- why trade Zach now when if they wait, they might be able to put together a better deal. Two possible answers: (1) maybe Portland tried and knew the only organization that would take on Zach's contract was NY; and/or (2) Portland wanted to start a new era tonight, and didn't want Randolph around to taint the new guy.

Posted by: Sean | June 28, 2007 9:58 PM

I was really hoping for either Thornton of Williams. I guess the decision was made not to take a chance on Williams from the git go, because he is exactly what we need. But I can't complain. Character and chemistry are important.

Blockbuster trades are not being announced but I still see lots of veteran trades and movement. Too many teams are looking to re-tool and dump saleries. Things will happen as the evnening goes on and on into the next days as people see more clearly where everybody stands in terms of need.

Posted by: BmoreRev | June 28, 2007 9:59 PM

trade BTH, second round pick, and the rights to Juan Carlos whatever to denver for marcus camby or K-mart

Posted by: trade BTH | June 28, 2007 10:02 PM

How to upgrade the C position.

A. Trade Brendan for some used dirty draws.

B. ...

C. Center position is now upgraded

Whohoo!!!!!!!!!!

Wizards rule!!!!!

p.s. realgm sucks

Posted by: DumbBrendanHater | June 28, 2007 10:06 PM

Sean, thats exactly what I was thinking. They wanted a "New" Portland era and that starts tonight. But you have to ask is that really worth a championship for the team in the future? If its that important to you and you want to make a splash now, why don't you offer the Lakers Randolph in exchange for their 19 and Odom, throw in a little filler if you want. Odom>>>>>>Frye, 19 who ended up being Critterion >>>> than Francis for one year, and cap room. Especially if you plan on buying the 24, that would give you three first round picks.

Or you can trade Randolph to the Hornets for Tyson Chandler, filler and a future #1 for your troubles.

Sorry to talk so much about a team that's not us, but I hate it when NBA GM's make such ridiculous moves.

Posted by: The Owl Wizard | June 28, 2007 10:07 PM

I think the Bulls and Kings had by far the worst drAFT . What happened to thomas and wallace in Chicago. As for the Kings why spencer Hawes?

Posted by: trade BTH | June 28, 2007 10:09 PM

i can't say i'm too displeased with our pick. i was hoping for either one of the two youngs or williams. i think williams was the safer pick, but nick bascially has the change to be either an amazing scorer or a bust. hopefully, arenas' work ethic will rub off on him.

Posted by: JC | June 28, 2007 10:09 PM

Heck of a pick. Watched Nick Young on those late night Fox broadcasts and in the NCAA's. He does have the ability to play defense, just doesn't always show it. Long arms and quickness. He's not as bad defensively as they make him out to. Need to re-sign Deshawn to give this kid a year to learn, but we DESPERATELY needed the bench help and a guy who can come off the bench for Stevenson or Caron not named Jarvis. Can't wait to see him in the Summer League.

Not much to talk about with Wizards since they made a good pick. I think it is fun to talk about some of the trades. And I think cap room is so valuable that it is still a good deal for the Blazers. Wonder who they are going to pawn Miles off on?

Posted by: George Templeton | June 28, 2007 10:14 PM

i would LOVE to get camby from denver if we could. unfortunately the salaries don't work out. we'd have to give up more than bth, and they're not going to want to take two long tearm contract equally more money than camby does alone...

Posted by: JC | June 28, 2007 10:16 PM

Any deal for Camby or K-Mart would have to involve Jamison.

Posted by: George Templeton | June 28, 2007 10:17 PM

Both Camby and Martin put them over the cap, but I agree they are better players. We just can't get them.

Posted by: Aven | June 28, 2007 10:18 PM

okay, BTH and Jamison for Marcus Camby or K-Mart.

Posted by: trade BTH | June 28, 2007 10:24 PM

why did Detroit draft Afflalo? I thought he was mid second round?

Posted by: trade BTH | June 28, 2007 10:28 PM

Not to get to realistic on you, but that trade puts the Nuggets over the Cap. We get your point. Haywood gone at all costs. I gotta agree with you. The Wiz just have to figure out who will take him.

How about Haywood and Daniels for Okur? It works salary-wize, but doesn't make a lot of sense for either team, really.

Posted by: Aven | June 28, 2007 10:29 PM

Haywood is hard to trade cuz he sucks, but makes a ton of money. I am very skeptical that we will get anything other money and a future second round pick for Haywood.

Posted by: Aven | June 28, 2007 10:41 PM

Don't trade Daniels. At least not if you want to be a deep playoff team. He showed in the playoffs this year that he can distribute the ball with the best of them. He's a veteran. He's a leader. And he doesn't mind coming off the bench. You keep Daniels.

Posted by: Ian | June 28, 2007 10:43 PM

Damn! The RealGm boards have crashed, I can't get on.

Young is a good pick for us, and it will make Gilbert happy having an LA side-kick.

Posted by: Wizzy | June 28, 2007 10:46 PM

I agree that keeping Daniels is great ideally, but he is one of your very few assets that is worth anything and not supremely overpaid. If we want anyone in the post, I think we have to trade him. Re-sign Stevenson, sign Young, and trade Daniels and Haywood for a big who knows how to put a body on someone and box-out. That being said, those guys together make a ton of money, so it will be tough to get anyone to bite on it.

Posted by: Aven | June 28, 2007 10:51 PM

BTH isn't making that much money, considering his position. 4.5 mil this upcoming season. for a 7 footer who can play some defense and rebound ok. he's MUCH easier to trade than etan.

Posted by: JC | June 29, 2007 12:22 AM

Resign Blatche and Stevenson and then trade Blatche, Daniels and Young for Camby. Add Haywood for a spare part off their roster if they are silly enough to take him. You give up some future for the present (or potential for a proven producer)to fill a huge gap. Denver would like to move him so do whatever it takes to make the deal. Short of Arenas and Butler, everyone is expendable.

Posted by: Daydreamer | June 29, 2007 9:51 AM

Steve Francis is in possible deal to go back to Houston. Don't think he'll be in Portland very long.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 29, 2007 11:40 AM

"Resign Blatche and Stevenson and then trade Blatche, Daniels and Young for Camby"

Even if Denver was willing to make that deal (and they wouldn't be, because Camby has more value than that) it's a terrible move for the Wizards.

Posted by: kalorama | June 29, 2007 11:49 AM

I dont see what all the hype is about over Nick Young. Yes he is a good offensive player who needs work on Defense. What i want to know, why isn't the Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld showing any interest in obtaining Kevin Garnett. He is a proven allstar player who still wants to WIN, He has great offense and plays Defense. I say we should have packed up Haywood, Antawn Jamison, micheal ruffin and our first rounds draft pick and tried to be some type of force in the paint.
