The latest

I was on the phone with a spokesman with the Orange County Sheriff's Dept. and he said that there isn't much to update on the incident that went down at DeShawn Stevenson's Orlando home early Monday morning. I can answer a few questions some of you may have:

-At this point, the investigation remains open and detectives are looking into whether someone inside DeShawn's house or oustide (where Ronnie Milsap and Brandon Hunter were) returned fire and hit Curtis Ruff after he opened fire to begin with. However, Stevenson, Milsap and Hunter have declined to press charges and Ruff isn't talking to investigators either. He could have been hit by a ricochet, he could have shot himself or he could have been shot by someone else.

-The spokesman, Jim Solomons, explained to me that Florida has a "no victim, no crime" law meaning that if charges aren't pressed against Ruff by someone who is a witness, officials can't arrest him.

-I asked Solomons why he thinks Stevenson and co. are not pressing charges and he said: "There could be several reasons. They could fear retaliation - Curtis Ruff has a history of criminal activity, this guy is no stranger to police - or they could just want to see the whole matter dropped so they can move on or, it's possible that they fear that an investigation would reveal something they don't want revealed so there are several factors at work here." That said, Solomons said investigatros are "frustrated" over a lack of cooperation in the case.

-Solomons could not confirm or deny that a house next to Stevenson's was hit by bullets (someone claiming to be his neighbor said that their home was hit in the comments section of my last blog) but he said it would not be "unlikely" given the closeness of Stevenson's home to others.

-I haven't spoken with DeShawn yet but I did speak to someone close to him last night and he said DeShawn was "shaken" by the whole thing. The person swore that DeShawn was home minding his business when this whole thing went down and didn't know what was going on until Milsap and Hunter ran into the house telling him to get down. The person I spoke with also made it clear that DeShawn had no idea who Ruff was before the incident and neither did Milsap/ Hunter. That vibes with the police report's statement that Ruff followed Milsap and Hunter into the gated community where Stevenson lives.

WAS DESHAWN REALLY "SLEEPING"?

Well, the Times seems to report it a little different, as does a previous poster (in the last blog entry), Grace, who claims to live in the neighborhood.

She should have as much beef with the so-called "security".

http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070821/SPORTS03/108210077/1005/SPORTS

And remember that Dee-Shawn slept with a 14 year old when he was 21.

C'mon Dood!

I'm just saying, everyone can draw their own conclusions about race, etc.

In any case, there are about a MILLION flags here...that you really can't blame people for drawing their own conclusions when all those involved have left the door wide open.

D-Steve was asleep. Please.

DS sleeping is not an unusual thing. He sleeps on the defense end too.

Thanks for the "insight" anonymous poster #3.

But the whole game has the idea of "snitching" wrong.

This is a good article that appeared in yesterday's post.

To be honest, as much as I may hope Ivan's story is the right one, I'm inclined to believe the Times's version a little more. Why would Brandon Hunter just show up at Deshawn's house at 4 in the morning if Deshawn was in there sleeping? It makes a lot more sense to me that DS was just getting home when the shooting started. I don't think that makes him a thug, though God knows what led up to that mess. Also, I'm not sure about the Times feeling a need to include that statutory rape charge in their article, but maybe that's only because I didn't know about it and would have preferred to keep it that way.

Oh, also, thanks, Ivan. Keep up the good work, please.

Posted by: hmmmmm | August 21, 2007 2:52 PM

Please do not refer the "Stop Snitching" label on this subject. A Snitch is defined as, if I rob a bank with you and I get caught then I tell on you. That's snitching and it is a code amongst ALL criminals alike Black or White. Snitching is not if someone shoots me and I tell on them. So do not bring up Camron who is an idiot and a clown to the utmost in this blog. This so-called gangster is by no means relevant in this story or in life.

Posted by: DC Man88 | August 21, 2007 2:54 PM

What has gotten into folks???

So what if he was sleeping or not! If he was up and some intruder came up on his property shooting at his friends and his house he has all the RIGHT to protect himself.

If you dont agree w/me then you are NOT a man!!! If someone is trying to cause harm to you I recommend you to PROTECT yourselves.

who really cares, if no body is going to cooperate and press charges then nothing here really matters unless you are truly afraid of DeShawn causing problems on our team (which I am not). There is no need for the ridiculous speculation of what DS could have been doing or what could have happened until you either here more about the truth or you were there. If it goes away then who cares??

Posted by: LooseCannon | August 21, 2007 2:59 PM

DS's HOA should give DS the boot. You can't have your boys letting random people through the gate who end up shooting up the block while kids are in the PJ's thinking about school the next morning.

Yeah, it really doesn't matter unless you have an owner who changed the name of his franchise because he doesn't want it to be represented by "bullets" and negativity form that.

See, what AB did and what DS did aren't far apart. AB went trolling for hoes while working with a wallet with $100. If he had the contract already, he'd have his boys go out to da clubs and bring the ho's back to his crib. Either way, they both lose this time.

Posted by: DC Man88 | August 21, 2007 3:04 PM

I don't care if DS was asleep or awake or whatever, and I don't really care about what happened at all, but it all just seems a little suspicious. I doubt he was up to anything all that bad if he was up to anything bad at all. Maybe he lied because he didn't want a woman to know he was bringing girls home. It doesn't really matter, but combined with Andray's solicitation (which I also couldn't care less about morally, but find to demonstrate awful judgment) it casts kind of an ugly light on the team right now.

Ultimately, though, what really matters is nobody got hurt (except for Curtis Ruff, who sounds like he deserves to get shot).

Posted by: Bob | August 21, 2007 3:09 PM

Abe is not gonna be happy about this if the Times's version is closer to the truth on this, ol' Abe is gonna have a little chat with Mr. 50.

Another fine example of black athletes in action off the court or field. They can't hack the real world. Martin Luther King would be turning his head in shame about what has become of his dream.

Posted by: Anti Pro Sports | August 21, 2007 3:15 PM

No matter what is written, what is Deshawn says, no one is going to believe him. How do we know that he "wasn't" asleep. We all know that newspapers don't always print the truth and why did they have to throw in the statutory rape incident other then to cast doubt on him and portray him in a negative light. Besides, what does one thing have to do with another? This society loves dirt on people who happen to have money. It likes to build people up and then tear them down. Hey what ever happened, happened. I am just glad Deshawn wasn't hurt and pray that this incident gives him pause to reevaulate his friends and associates.

Posted by: Kevin | August 21, 2007 3:22 PM

In DeShawn's case I wouldn't hold it against him if he defended his house with a personal weapon, especially in the days of Eddie Curry and 'Toine Fathead Wlakaah getting their own personal 'shock and awe' home invasion situations.

In that (purely speculative) case I wouldn't be surprised if the others covered it up to 'protect' him.

But whatever, if he had any sort of endorsement hopes for whatever, it does tend to blow a few holes in those hopes, so if all is on the up and up it would make the most sense for him to come clean and testify on whatever he knows then volunteer for whatever 'anti-violence' initiatives the NBA wants to come up with.

That's the way to make real dollars.

I see Roger Goodell type regimes starting to ramp up. Players association or no.

Here's an aerial photo of DeShawn's house and neighborhood.

http://www.zillow.com/search/Search.htm?addrstrthood=1348+Lake+Whitney+Drive&citystatezip=orlando%2C+fl&GOButton=%3CSPAN%3EGO%3C%2FSPAN%3E

This is an old aerial photo, however, as you can see that although few homes are pictured around DeShawn's, if you click on the various lots, details will pop up showing the details of the homes built on those lots. So there actually are more homes around DeShawn's than are pictured.

If you click on the pop up box for DeShawn's house, you will see a closer view of the house. (I notice DeShawn has a trampoline -- most likely just in case Gil visits.)

Posted by: Sean | August 21, 2007 3:51 PM

Ronaldo,

Im glad I didnt stay in the hood. Anyone in the hood doesnt want to stay in the hood. It is tough out there when you may have felons for neighbors. My school was a disappointment. Lucky thing my family and I had strong values. It is funny to hear you say such a thing because not all people who are from the "Hood" are bad. Its just people get caught up in life's situations. I am proud of where I come from because that is what makes you strong. Turning your life from nothing to something leaves you with some pride of your accomplishments.

"To Andray Blatche, perhaps. Blatche is the NBA forward who thought it made sense to celebrate his $12.5 million contract offer from the Washington Wizards with a night on the town with posse member Gregory Palmer. Between the two of them, according to reports, they decided it would be good to share an $80 hooker. Turns out the hooker was an undercover cop.

Turns out Blatche is a complete idiot. The Washington Post's Ivan Carter wrote last year that he had "heard from a good source that (Blatche) was sleeping at Verizon Center for several nights as a rookie because he couldn't pay rent." As a rookie, Blatche was living on a two-year, $1.1 million contract. It's not easy to fund a posse and pay rent on that. A posse costs dope money, yo."
- excerpt from Gregg Doyle's column today at CBSSportsline.com

LOL...this article (subject: Vick) is pretty good and this excerpt made me laugh. Seriously, Ivan, did you report that Andray slept at the phone booth bc he could not make rent??? If so, that is completely ridiculous. Otherwise, Doyle is quoting you out of context. Hilarious...Andray is starting to strick me as not just immature, but maybe not so bright. Hope I'm wrong bc you don't win championships with a bunch of fools on your team.

DC Man, I GUARANTEE you he burned through that in no time. Even after taxes we're talking about $660,000 or over $300 grand a year. If you can't make rent on that, your dumb. Hell, I would not be shocked if the contract he just signed got him out of serious debt. And, he almost blew it! No pun intended.

Not to mention the per diem NBA players get in season. I would not be surprised if it's hundreds of dollars a day or otherwise more than what a typical person makes in a day.

All pro athletes should consult their attorneys before leaving the house and every hour they are out, because they obviously don't have common sense, let alone the intelligence of a 10 year old. Keep you mouth shut about criminals and snitching and watch either you or your family be that next victim. I hate cops, but if I see something go down, I'll sing like a canary. Wayne from Bowie, I was being facetious. I too lived in the "hood", except, in my times we called it the "getho". I also rode away from it, and left a lot of good friends who did not want to rise above of it - oh, yeah, the excuses and the blames were genuine and plenty, but you can either sulk on them and drown or rise above it, the final result is upon the person. I still talk to some of my old friends, but they must cross the river on their own if they want to visit me, we live in two separate worlds and we must abide by each other's rules. There are some people on this blog, I assume by their posting, that can not understand that once you are out of the "hood" the rules have changed and that one must abide by them - to those people, I say again, stay in the hood and sulk or rise above it.
By the way, I think Ivan can help by writing for all and not just for the hood. Does he really need to bring his writings to slangs like the "hoods", "his boys", etc? He might think this is a black thing, but it isn't, it is a garbage thing.
I am glad you made it out. I know I am.

in present day America, it's really neither. It's not like the words"hood" and "his boys" are some kind of heavily-encrypted jive-based code. Everybody knows what they mean, and plenty of people who aren't Black or from the hood use them frequently.

Times change.

Believe what you want,
I have seen Gil out recently with the mother of his children and his kids and his (or her) mom. They were out on a nice day enjoying themselves. I'm not saying they don't have problems, but I think a lot of people know very little and say too much.

Believe this, after he was served they reconciled and have had another child together. There are a number of reasons beyond avoiding taking care of his children, why a person might not want to be served legal papers.

Take your rumors elsewhere.

I find it hard to beleive that DS would have allowed this dude in his house.
How did that conversation go with Hunter and/or friend and DS. I have these ladies who want to come thru but they want to know if its cool to bring their friend Ruff??? C'mon man!

Ruff seemed like he followed the ladies like a P*** whipped dude and told the gaurds he was with them.

Now maybe the gaurds do not want to take blame but obviously the guy was uninvited or else they would have had this argument in the house.

ALL OF YOU ALL HAVE TO START THINKIN!

But what do I expect from the same people who say lets trade AJ, Nick Young, and a 1st round for a DAMN Jermain O'neal.

Posted by: Wayne from Bowie | August 22, 2007 10:00 AM

This does not add up. Boy or not, you come to my crib and shoot up the place and hit a neighborhouse to boot. It does not add up. At least have the police save the person from himself!

Lastly, I'm a married old man now far removed from my 20's. But these NBA players are absolutely weak when it comes to the ladies! I think of the stuff I did back in the day without being a multi-millionaire or 6-figure baller. These guys should handle their business much better than they do.

Posted by: RobGreg | August 22, 2007 10:06 AM

Here is my take?
I believe DS and the boys were on the way home and stoped bye the BP gas station to fill up. They saw a couple of "hookers", got them to follow them to the house. However DS and the boys didn't know they had a street pimp in the escalade. And when they didn't want to fork over the money to have a good time that is when all hell broke loose! If you read the sential newspaper in Orlando they met the girls at BP gas station. That probably explain the argument between the "pimp" and his girl out side DS house!

The Godfather - your take makes more sense than any others offered here. And since we just make up stuff to fill in the blanks anyhow, your story is the one I'm going with. I am smart enough to know you're a joke too.

Duh, I think you have bad reading comprehension. The "too" was for you, along with the original poster (possibly you also) who sent the false praises which meant nothing to me. Idiot.

Don't understand for the life of me why these athletes cannot let go of the posse! Brandon Hunter had a cup of tea in the NBA, was probably a good teammate to DS and now DS feels some loyalty to support him. Makes no sense. These guys are mini-corporations, yet they fail to realize the damage they can possibly do to themselves and their futures by hanging with these low-lifes. Vick, AB and DS all need to wake up. Give them all a copy of Bill Rhodens book about the black athlete and their slave mentality, lock them in a room and force them to read it!

What else are these idiots going to do? They aren't exactly the pillars of their community. How much more time can be spent on Madden '08 or spent at the car dealership or at Jacob the Jeweler? For sure, DS isn't busy preparing his admissions application for college.

As I've said many times, if most of these athaletes didn't have their athletic ability, they'd be dead or in jail.

What we have here is classic athletic idiocy. Who in their right mind would expect a bunch of uneducated, classless, untrained,ill-mannered, characterless, country guys to do anything different? They surround themselves with bunch of ignoramuses. Can they even read?

Who the hell ever heard of a Millionaire acting like this bunch of fools?
Fighting in the streets..pickin up $40 ho's

Blatche? I read has a public defender(free) lawyer...claims "he's broke"
How can you burn thru 1.1 Mil in a year?

For goodness sake...Stevenson has a mouth FULL OF GOLD TEETH!! Who does he model himself after? Flava Flav??

Florida seems to breed their athletes the just like Vick did his dogs. He & his brother(rapist, petihile, drunk, drug addict - classic examples.

Iignorant, rude, classless, southern - hill- billies!

DS Came to town fiance in tow..threw big birthday party for her at LOVE. During the fiance's party - DS was gettin busy w/someone else..in the "restroom" She stood to thank him..anouncing their wedding plans. DS walks out - dumped & dismissed her then proceeded to announce he was now engaged to new bathroom lover?
So - it might have been a woman shooting outside his place...

Bottom line? Mgmt kept his sorry behind becuz of Arenas. Not one team showed interest. Obviously - mgmt wants to keep Gil Arenas happy - Therefore - he better get their sorry butts in control..
He asked for them..
Another waste? Ed Tapscott...who hates EJ.
Whats that about?

As you can see - not the least surprised nor impressed.

As if you all haven't figured it out yet..
Haywood is here because Ernie Grunfeld wanted to keep him here. Grunfeld deals with the players - Jordan can't communicate with. Most specifically ? Gilbert as well.

This is Jordan's last year..Writing is on the wall....

Hey who wrote the comment on here about Tapscott making comments Jordan was a dumb idot & criticised his irrational rotations?

And he'll work w/a man he doesn't respect? Now thats an odd picture.

That is some SERIOUS juice by Starbucks. I nominate Starbucks to have a sister blog to this blog to give us the real dirt.

I applaud "Brotherman" for recommending one of the best books...

"40 Million Dollary Slaves" by William Rhoden of the New York Times.

Absolutely..the best..one of my favorites.

As a matter of fact, I asked Etan Thomas had he read it & his thoughts...

"He thought it was very good..but didn't have a clear understand of it and what it meant"

Recalling the conversation, I'd say he still doesn't. Lets hope he learns to improve his work ethic and is a bit less lethargic.

As some may know..I'm about having a strong work ethic towards a common goal. NOT just "the playoffs" first round every year. I'm for improving yr after yr..with the ultimate goal of a championship.

The "rocky" "gladiator" syndrome

My guess is..Ernie G is pacing himself but with his eyes on the prize...
the interesting part is which chess pieces he'll be moving around on the board in order to get to the kings row & "checkmate"

I'm willing to stay tuned.
