Arenas will start

I just got back from the lockeroom where Gilbert Arenas was bouncing around acting like his usual loose self. Arenas said his left knee feels much better after he had it drained of excess fluid yesterday morning and expects to play as long as he needs to tonight and tomorrow night against Denver. Arenas said he will continue to have it drained "every three weeks or so" and knows what he needs to do to take care of the knee.

"Before, I was going hard because I didn't feel any pain so I wasn't icing it like I should have been," Arenas said. "When you don't feel any pain, you think everything is just normal. Now, I know what I have to do. I have to keep up with my strength excersises, my flexibility excersises, ice and stay off it as much as possible."

He previously had the knee drained on Oct. 17 but it was a slightly different deal that day because he took cortisone into the knee while also having fluid taken out. Yesterday, he just had it drained. He will wear a knee sleeve to keep the knee warm tonight.

He described his three-point shooting woes as a "mental block" and said he just needs to get one or two to go down and everything will roll from there.

I asked Eddie Jordan whether he would monitor Gilbert's minutes tonight since the team plays tomorrow night and then on Sunday in Atlanta.

Eddie: "Nah. Gil is the one who tells us pretty much how he feels and how much he can go. He should be pretty fresh so his normal minutes are the entire first quarter and a few minutes in the second. That's normal."

Classic Eddie...

Why would he worry about Gil's minutes? I guess he doesn't realize that Gil is playing for a contract and does not want this knee to lessen his value. Eddie needs to grow some balls and limit his minutes regardless of how Gil says it is feeling.

Totally clueless. Can we just get EJ out of town already?

Posted by: Mike in SD | November 8, 2007 07:25 PM

C'mon EJ....

Posted by: Kwame | November 8, 2007 08:43 PM

I forgot, where did you guys coach?

For serious...get off Eddie Jordan's back.

Who you want back at the helm? Jimmy Lynam? Wes Unseld?

Pu-lease.

Amen

Posted by: bigfish | November 8, 2007 09:51 PM

So this is a team full of stupid players. Literally stupid. There's no other explanation for the decisions they make. It blows my mind. This offense is PUTRID, and it's the only thing EJ has ever been able to hang his hat on. Defense looked good, but who cares when the players are stupid and careless. I'm getting sick of this crap. It's ridiculous. Yeah, the Mavs started 0-4 last year, but the Wizards are no where close to being the Mavs. Count on Washington being 0-5 after tomorrow night. I guess Hollinger was right about this squad.

Posted by: Colin | November 8, 2007 10:03 PM

Another lost but I actually thought they played better as a team. EJ didn't do a bad job switching players either. We all know that their main reason for losing is because Gil is clearly not the same player he was last year. He wont be until after a year or so (See Javis Hayes). This team is missing a dominated player and right now we just have nice players. Unless we make a trade, I don't see this team finishing no more than 6th place this year.

Posted by: DeMj | November 8, 2007 10:05 PM

This team won't make it to sixth place. EJ's rotations were suspect in a lot of cases tonight, still. When Carter started going crazy in the second quarter, it's because he had Gilbert guarding him. DeShawn did a nice job on Carter in the first period, but he couldn't get any more run after that, so Carter scored at will on Arenas.

Posted by: Colin | November 8, 2007 10:06 PM

i'll be the only honest one here...i have no idea what's going on with this team. they do look better defensively but the "o" is not in synch...don't know why.

Posted by: scrappy | November 8, 2007 10:10 PM

wow. we give up a 20 point lead then settle for a last second 3, down 2, with 24 seconds on the clock. everyone and their mother knew gil was taking that shot, so why not pass? heck, why not drive the lane and try to score right away just in case you miss? ever heard of a put back? how about fouling if you don't make it? poor, poor coaching. and if that wasn't the coaches direction, then that was selfish, selfish basketball.

I can't see this team even winning 30 right now.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | November 8, 2007 10:16 PM

Well....none of us are more frustrated than the Wizards players right now. And they are the ones who have to go out and play a Nuggets team tomorrow, a mad Nuggets team who just got blown out by the Celtics last night.

Look, I've been a Bullets fans for years, and none of us wants a 'spoiled fans' label after dealing with all those years of futility.

You don't like this. I don't like this.

But let's deal with it. This team needs our support.

The crowd in the Verizon Center needs to be MUCH better tomorrow night than it was on opening night.

A team is only as good as it's weakest link, as the saying goes, so don't let the fans be that weakest link.

http://www.truthaboutit.net will not be doing a live game blog tomorrow...he'll be at the game.

And I'll be watching.

Wow, I thought Les BouleS were going to win this game, but I was wrong this time. Came out of the barn burnin', but let Joisey get back in it.

EG is looking like a smart man with how he made it a priority to resign DS. DS is healthy too. Take a look at his box score.

http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=271108017

It was a totally bad idea to run an isolation for Gilby with 24 seconds on the clock. What about the other 4 people on the court? Are they chopped liver?

I thought Les BouleS had good ball movement and good offensive chemistry, but can't figure out why they didn't run a play with the final possession. Eddie called a 20 second time out to do this, with both AJ and CBut having a good shooting night?

This team is clearly undermanned. Better get some big bodies to VC and start working them out.

Posted by: DC Man88 | November 8, 2007 10:18 PM

It's time to fired Eddie Jordan... we had 24 secs and ball, down by 2... They wasted all the time on the clock for a Gilbert double teamed fading away jump shot from 22 feet... why not move the ball for a good open look... they always have to go for the dramatic finish, what happened to scoring & then playing defense for the last 10 seconds... oh yeah, I forgot they don't play defense!

BTW...responding to a comment on the previous Insider Post.

If you don't want to go to my site, don't go.

No worries here, OK?

It's not like I've got all these ads and making money off of them.

Just another Wizards fan getting HIS opinion out there. OK?

Posted by: www.truthaboutit.net | November 8, 2007 10:23 PM

Well I'm encouraged even though we lost. In the first quarter, the ball movement was great and we scored at will. We were running and our shots were fallin. Of course, NJ felt compelled to try to keep up and was one shot and done every time down. If we continue to play like that, we'll definitely win our share of games. Even Ab got into the game.

It's obvious now that EJ's rotation does not include McGuire . He'll more than likely never play unless there is a blowout. We may as well stop calling for him and get used to it.

Congrats on the rotation, EJ. It's gotten better since the last game. I'm still not getting why Arenas is playing 43 minutes a game. I know we want to win but at the risk of permanently injuring him? Especially since AD played 26 minutes, why not use him to spell GA? ??? Illogical !!

Posted by: mark | November 8, 2007 10:24 PM

...and for all those waiting to pounce on BTH, the 3 centers for NJ scored a combined 6 points. He was a presence even though his box score looks like crap. He was frequently brought out away from the hoop, as Phil Chenier pointed out.

Posted by: mark | November 8, 2007 10:27 PM

Coach sucks, he really is suckimus maximus. Coach must go. Must Go!!! Call Larry Brown, Red's ghost, I dunno, somebody.

Posted by: DC | November 8, 2007 10:29 PM

I try not to be critical b/c im not a professional coach, but that last play with 24 seconds left with gilbert dribbling down the entire clock and shooting a wild shot, with no play drawn up to pass the ball - it is pathetic - really pathetic.

Posted by: charles jones | November 8, 2007 10:35 PM

We don't know if that's the play Eddie drew up or not. Gil has so much confidence in his end-of-the-game shotmaking, that he feels he can beat any defense.

My problem is minutes, yet again: Gil 43, Atawn 43, Caron 41. Those guys will be dead by the 3/4 mark of the season if Eddie doesn't start using his bench. Especially Gil. Someone might want to mention to Eddie that he had surgery on his knee in the offseason.

Posted by: Keithinator | November 8, 2007 10:42 PM

Although GA is not 100%, let's not start making wild claims like he won't be back to his old self for a year or two. He had a miniscus cleaned up. That's not anything close to what Hayes had and its nothing like an ACL replacement. So, please people, don't start playing doctor when you have no idea what you're talking about.

Second, it's crazy for EJ to play GA for 40+ minutes... Just crazy. It's clear that the extended minutes are causing the discomfort/swelling, so why, when you're facing a back-to-back games, is he playing GA so much.

Lastly, those of you who suggest there are no coaches out there willing to coach a playoff team should get a reality check. There are probably several good, young coaches out there that are at the front of EG's rolodex.

And, I'm sorry, do you have to be a former head coach to be critical?

Posted by: M.E.G. | November 8, 2007 10:43 PM

You're right M.E.G., you don't have to be a former head coach to be critical.

But sometimes, it seems like people assume when they don't know the full story.

So yea, criticism is fine...but sophomoric comments such as saying the coach sucks amd wondering if he knows that Gil is coming off a knee injury, etc...does not really help because it's not constructive criticism.

Posted by: www.truthaboutit.net | November 8, 2007 10:55 PM

Truth,

I expect most people would recognize my comment as sarcastic. My post was substantive, however, so give it a rest, OK?

Posted by: Keithinator | November 8, 2007 10:58 PM

I say EJ is gone within 20 games for two simple reasons that everyone says. He's not even trying to develop a bench which is really going to cost us down the line. This is twice in four games when down at the end of the game WITH TONS OF TIME LEFT that we hold the ball till the last second. We are the only team in the league that does this. Everyone else looks for the 1st good shot so there is plenty of time left of the clock to get a rebound or foul. A reporter at the post needs to ask Eddie Jordan about this strategy.

Posted by: Sam | November 8, 2007 10:59 PM

Whatever, Truthtit, I know the coach sucks because I've been witnessing his suckitude for the past few years. According to you, my criticism isn't "constructive" unless I've compiled a huge file complete with photographs, videotape, and numbered appendixes referencing my findings. Well, screw that, take my word for it, the objective bird's-eye truth is that coach sucks.

Posted by: DC | November 8, 2007 11:00 PM

Wiz played better D but the O is still not there. They looked really good for a while but Jersey did hit some tuff shots towards the end. Still no excuse to let a 20pt lead go. I agreed with the 3 at the end but maybe not that shot although Vc got away with a nice push on gil at the end. The saying is go for the win on the road and the tie at home and most coaches go with it I know I do. Just they needed a better shot. Hopefully were getting ready to turn the corner.

FIRE EDDIE JORDAN!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Shaq | November 8, 2007 11:01 PM

My ominous feeling was unfortunately confirmed tonight. But they did look more cohesive in stretches.

Wonder how it'll go tomorrow with the Nuggets minus Nene (out six weeks; thumb ligament injury). I'm just hoping the Wiz dig down deep...PLEASE put one in the win column...

Ask yourself, if EJ were to sit Gilby, AJ, or Caron down, who on this team is going to score? DS laid an egg tonight, and AD got significant minutes but scored 5 pts. Darius is too slow and has no hops and can't get his shot off either. Roger Mason laid an egg also!

http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=271108017

This team is in serious trouble, because in order for Les BouleS to be successful, Gilby has to be healthy. This team is not just hurting for scoring, they are also hurting for a bench, defense, and an inside presence for the second team.

Posted by: DC Man88 | November 8, 2007 11:12 PM

AJ looked very good on offense. DeShawn did a pretty good job on Carter and I thought he should have had more minutes. Eddie's playing the same mind-games at the 2 this year that he did at the 5 the past three years. At least AB was on the floor early, and he and Nick both showed a couple of nice offensive flashes there.

I think we've got a good second unit there in AD, Nick, Caron, Song, and AB, and am glad Eddie is solidifying that rotation. But then he follows that unit up by swapping Gil and AJ in for Nick and Caron, and I think having Gil and AD in together for long stretches leaves us too small in the backcourt. I thought that was the beginning of NJ's comeback mid-way 2nd, when Gil and AD were on the floor too long together and were getting beaten on screens and broken down off the dribble. Might have been better to have DeShawn out there with Gil.

Posted by: Prazak | November 8, 2007 11:23 PM

How did DS do a good job on VC when VC had 24 pts, 5 rebs, and 5 assists? If anything, VC did a good job on DS causing him to lay an egg and only get 14 min PT from EJ.

Posted by: DC Man88 | November 8, 2007 11:28 PM

DeShawn was on the bench most of the game. Vince did that primarily to Gil and Caron.

Posted by: Prazak | November 8, 2007 11:31 PM

And to AD on switches.

Posted by: Prazak | November 8, 2007 11:32 PM

And DS laid his own eggs. He had a couple wide-open looks early on, including two in a row on one possession in the 1st. That wasn't Vince's defense.

Posted by: Prazak | November 8, 2007 11:34 PM

We also got hurt when EJ left Songaila in at center during the second half. Instead, if we had seen more of BTH in there, it might have cut off a lot of the penetration we saw from Jefferson and Vince. Not that Songaila is a bad player; he should just be in there as a sub for AJ and not center. But hey, this is nothing new, coach did the same thing last year when he rarely played our only seven-footer in the fourth quarter, instead opting for Ruffin, who as an undersized, non-scoring, foul machine is thankfully gone. What I'm trying to say is that there's no way to "fix EJ" -- EJ must go!!

Posted by: DC | November 8, 2007 11:35 PM

If Gil, AJ, and Caron all play 40+ minutes every night injuries will be sure to follow. I think unless EJ tweaks the rotation (AJ off the bench?) his seat is going to start getting a bit warm if we find ourselves at 5-14 in a few weeks. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Posted by: akmed0 | November 8, 2007 11:43 PM

please, 6 more losses. 0-10 and Eddie gets fired.

B-Hay totally underused. Gilbert guarding Vince Carter. Wow.

Worst coach in the NBA.

Posted by: MikeBHay | November 8, 2007 11:44 PM

According to TNT's David Aldridge Gilbert Arenas will be having an MRI either Friday or Saturday and that his minutes might be curtailed.

The curse of the Wizards medical staff may reach new heights.

Posted by: Ben | November 9, 2007 12:40 AM

Pathetic -How's that for verbage "Truth?"
Quit trying to promote your little tired website. Go puke on some other blog.

Wizards were pathetic.

24 seconds for Arenas to do the Stevie Franchise "dribble, dribble, dribble then opps!!! I won't be smart & pass it out!
No, Arenas has to Lob it up 10 ft from rim.

Bulls finally got their first win against Detroit.

Wiz passed on Navarro & Miles for Mason & or Stevenson? More pathetic.

Welcome back AJ & CB at least there are 2 players worth writing about.

I agree with that. This team does well when Gilbert is playing like a star. Without that, the "Big 3" is really just the "Pretty Good 3," and the team doesn't have enough beyond that. The team has no one off the bench like Nachbar that can impact the game offensively.

Why is Stevenson playing so little? I know he's not scoring, but that's not why they have him. Vince scored either 0 or 2 points when Stevenson was in the game in the 1st quarter (hard to know for sure from the stats), for example.

I was quite impressed with NJ. They clearly had a game plan to contain Haywood (probably the first time a team had a plan to stop Haywood since he was in college). They played zone, and on every Wizards shot, ALL 5 PLAYERS moved into the lane to rebound. A smart and disciplined team.

Posted by: Henry | November 9, 2007 08:25 AM

"If DS is your defensive ace, then why is he on the bench?"

That's exactly my question. And if Gilbert is having knee problems why is he playing 40+ mpg in back-to-backs?

Only Eddie Jordan has the answer.
