Bad ending to long trip

This is not the way to end a long trip, losing to a lousy team by one point. Both teams came out flat in a game that I will remember only for its weirdness.

The Sixers won even though they missed all 14 of their three-point attempts and their best player, Andre Iguodala, missed his final 16 field goal attempts. The Wiz shot 41.8 percent, turned it over 18 times and didn't attempt a fourth quarter free throw.

Still, the visitors had a chance to win it late but rookie Nick Young's three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left went a little long. Young came off the bench to score 13 and from where I sat, which was behind the basket where his last shot missed, it looked like he got a great look. I thought that baby was going down. So did Nick.

"I thought it was a great shot," Young said. "It felt great leaving my hands. It just didn't to in."

It should have never come to that point though, according to Antawn Jamison, who described himself as "dissapointed" and looked every bit of it as he dressed after the game. "We came out sluggish and stayed that way.

The Wiz (7-9) should have gotten out of this roadie no worse than 8-8 but at least they get five straight at home now. It's been a long week for all of us and I'm thankful to be getting tomorrow night off so Mike Lee will be taking care of business for the game against Toronto. I'll be watching from the comfort of Chez Cartier.....

I just reposted this from the last thread, but it sounds like you answered my question.

I just read the recap and my question for everyone that saw the game (because I didn't) was it a good play or a screwup that Nick Young took a 26-footer in the final moments?

Posted by: Anonymous | November 30, 2007 11:26 PM

It was a good look from Nick Young...but I still felt like the Wizards could have had a better shot. The ball was in Caron's hands on the left wing with about 8 or so seconds left, but he got caught in the air and had to kick it back to DeShawn at the top of the key. Thank God Stevenson didn't try to shoot it because he was having a bad night...but he swung it over to Young on the right, who was open, so you can't blame him for taking it instead of trying to drive. But this game just left a terrible taste in my mouth, mostly because of the aforementioned 18 turnovers. Lack of a back-up point guard should be a concern. I just don't trust Stevenson or Young to get the ball up the court and the team into the offense at times.

No Haywood til the 5 minute mark in the 4th. Jamison plays the entire 2nd half and has no legs. No Haywood on most critical defensive possession of the game after a timeout. EJ cannot separate his personal feelings for players from their performance on the court. Wiz will never be anything but a 1st round playoff team with him as coach.

Posted by: charlie32 | November 30, 2007 11:56 PM

Yeah, Ernie definitely has a grudge against Haywood, because Haywood's agent Andy Miller told me so. The same Andy Miller who gave us the Chucky Atkins fiasco, and who threatened us to not re-sign Jared Jeffries, letting him go to the Knicks with no compensation.

Players clearly look a bit fatigued. Can't finish strong. Let's management realizes this and the reinforcements come soon. I'd be a shame if Les BouleS take a tumble, and b/c of that, CBut doesn't get recognized for his great first half with an all star appearance.

Look at the minutes they logged, in a loss to a bad team. It's ridiculous. Can't believe Blatche only took 3 shots. At least AJ didn't play Mason.

Ernie or EJ? Ernie said throughout the offseason that he loved BTH's game and without Ernie's backing, BTH would be gone by now.

Here's a good reason for Gilby to keep a lower profile:

I'm guessing he's not going to be "out there" like he's been before.

Posted by: DC Man88 | December 1, 2007 10:09 AM

two comments - i assume with 10 seconds left we were out of timeouts?

also don't know if anyone noticed but when deshawn got the ball from caron, Antawn was WIDE open under the basket. Nick got a good look but DS made a very poor choice given the other option and the fact we were down by one.

these losses hurt in the long run. . .

Easy to second-guess everybody on the last play. Down one point, everybody - including the competition - knows that CB from 15-17 feet is the highest percentage shot for the Wiz. I like taking a chance for a score before the D sets up. NY makes that open shot at least 40-50% of the time.

Tonight. The secret weapon. DM for at least 20 minutes. No excuses. Go Wiz!

Repost from last blog (didn't mean to post there).

To Section101 - great story. I know you will cherish that day. We will all miss him.

NY had a wide open jumper, and until that point, he had missed only two shots the entire night. The only thing is we did not need a 3 pointer to win. He had enough time and was open to step in 2 steps and take an easier shot.

He just missed it. It was a very good look. It shows he is not afraid to take the last shot. He is going to be awsome.

The team was flat in the 1st and 3rd quarters. Eventhough Jamison was missing a lot of shots, when he was out of the game, no one else was scoring.

Caron got started late. The wiz had trouble with the press, and Daniels was in early foul trouble.

I didn't see a lot of small ball. Andre was in the game most of the time when Brendan was not. Andre was playing very well, but didn't take a lot of shots. Brendan played very well when he came back into the game, but before that, Andre was playing better. Songalia played very well when he was in the game.

Everyone got what they wanted in this game, no Roger Mason, which was suprising considering the foul trouble with Daniels. DS did a fairly good job of running the offense, but he did not shoot well. If you don't harp on his shooting, he had a very good game. Its funny how a lot of folks on this site trash Eddie and/or the wiz about offense vs defense, yet when a player like DS has a bad offensive night, but otherwise shines and stands out (defensively and running team on offense), he still gets trashed about not being able to shoot.

Other than a bad first period. The wiz kept the game at 2 points the entire time until about 5 minutes before the end. They let the 76'ers get up by about 7 points, and had to work extremely hard to get it back to one with under a minute remaining. Nick just missed. It happens. Good, open shot.

Also, AJ was open under the basket, but there was a defender between him and DS, so the pass would have been tricky.

Last thing ... I hate these long posts, don't you. Will try to stay away from them.

Charlie32 - This is what I have been saying since last season. Lets hope Eddie can see past the negativity he harbors against BTH and just let him get 30 minutes a game.

Posted by: Bullets Fever #1 | December 1, 2007 3:30 PM

same old refrain...BTH has 5 blocks and was clearly effective. Does Dalembert have all those points and rebounds with BTH in the game? I doubt it. We'll see what happens tonight but I'm leaning more toward looking for a new coach this offseason as the days go by. Doesn't seem like he learns.

Posted by: Anonymous | December 1, 2007 8:05 PM

A 16-2 run.

Posted by: Anonymous | December 1, 2007 8:06 PM

It's halftime and the great players from the past are being introduced. Congrads to Earl the Pearl Monroe! He was the one years ago who got me to start watching games as a kid on channel 20. The team stunk but him and Guis Johnson it was quite a show. They drafted Wes the next year and instantly became contenders. Their battles with the Knicks in the 70's were legendary. I have been a fan ever since even though I am in Baltimore and no longer in D.C.

I feel real good about the squad coming home from the trip. I think we can tread water and stay in the hunt for a while. Can't believe he is actualy giving DMac some prime time! Toronto is good but looks like we are doing a good job of keeping them out the lane. Let's get this one!

Caron said this summer that he was working on improving his range. He was not lying.

Posted by: Anonymous | December 1, 2007 9:24 PM

oh for the love of god...

Haywood played 26 minutes against Philly. Either Haywood or Blatche were on the floor for the majority of the game. There was a stretch when they were out there together. Yet, once again, the only reason they lost was because of Jordan's "grudge" against Haywood and the evils of "small ball."

I don't suppose the fact that they turned the ball over 18 times had anything to do with it? Or the fact that they went five minutes in the fourth quarter without making a field goal? Nope. Of course not. They lost because Jordan hates Haywood and would rather lose than play him every minute of every game.

It seems to me the wiz lost to philly, a bad team, because they didn't have a foul shot in the fourth quarter while the sixers had 14 of 18 or around that. Either that or the refs were on the take. I didn't see the fourth quarter but can only assume the Wiz were falling back into the habit of perimeter shooting and not attacking the basket. Haywood is coming off a sprain so that may explain the minutes but I think he should be playing 30-35 minutes. In the win against Toronto he played 18 and the Wiz won but for what it's worth (not much)I still don't think EJ handles substitutions and playing time well, despite the fact that he found some time for DMac last night.

Actually DCMan, we all kow that you do read his blog.

From a previous Arenas blog:

"I'm a trend setter, people. I don't want other shoe companies to try to jack my style now. My swag is too phenomenal. If any other basketball player out there wants to compete with my shoes, go ahead, we can have a 50 and Kanye right here. We can start it up, baby. I?ll be the bad guy. We can have a sneaker war."

And here is DC's response on the ESPN Wizards forum. BTW, he goes under clewiston88. I'm sure he'll try to say that he isnt clewiston or that I'm not a psychic so I couldnt possibly know who he is...but again, most of us here know you're a fake so there's no point denying it.

Oh, here's his quote:

"There is no doubt who said it. It is the same guy who, at times lets his mouth hurt his ball club.

In this instance though, it is just him begging for attention. Of course he wouls like to get a Kanye/50 battle going with someone. He needs the help. He would only be so lucky if a guy like Bron Bron would throw him a bone like that."

Dear Washington Post Staff:

I am writing to complain about a specific poster on Ivan Carter's sports blog, DC Man88, and to request that you take action to stop the problem.

DC Man88's posts are so crude, profane, and racist that I cannot even quote him more than one word here. He refers to women as "nappy," etc., then accuses them of having low morals in their interactions with male professional athletes.

You can read some of his posts here:
