An All Too Familiar End

Another year, another Wizards playoff exit thanks to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Game 6 went the same as Games 2 and 3 with one team dominating for the better part of the night and strolling to victory.

So now the Wizards head into the offseason with a laundry list of issues:
What's to be done with Arenas?
What about Jamison?
Can this team take the next step as presently constructed?

So we open it up to you, any predictions for this summer and next season?

I say start over, sign and trade both Jamison and Arenas. Then at least other players will try to combat the curse.

Everything set up fine. LeBron is making pan cakes for everyone! Gilbert Arenas looks FIERCE in his "white out" suit. He's currently having a conversation, about himself, with a plant in the corner. DeClown has been talking to several young girls. Brenda has been doing "crybaby" impressions for everyone. He STILL wishes that the Cavs hadn't traded him for Chris Mihm. Antawn and Caron haven't had much to say. Funny, because Antawn is a FA, and the Cavs will have a lot to work with in the offseason. And Caron STILL wishes that he was drafted by the Cavs. I've got to get some pancakes! LeBron will be stopping soon. He's got the Celtics to beat, after all.

Well, the Wizards protected their share of the luxury tax payout, and that's the most important thing. Right?

Posted by: quizzical | May 2, 2008 10:27 PM

Being 41 and barely remembering the Bullets going to the championship twice and winning once and then living with 20 plus years of terrible basketball to have this kind of problem is a luxury. Playoffs 4 years in a row.....I'll take it! We have to keep Gilbert. Just like the song by the Fixx this town has been have been "Saved by Zero". And a healty Gilbert is the Fixx to this team. Having Etan back will help as well. You have to give this group one more year to come back healthy have give it a shot. Sign Gilbert, give them a year and if the story has the same ending then we go for the trade. And if you want to trade this year....trade Gilbert for the #1 pick in the draft, but I wouldn't do it.

Posted by: B52bomb | May 2, 2008 10:27 PM

This group hasn't gotten it done in 3 post seasons...Time for the GM to take a serious look at blowing this up and starting again.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 10:29 PM

I'll make it to you very clear for you simple minded wiz fans: Rebuild. MAYBE with the exception of Caron Butler, get rid of everyone else. Jamison will want too much money for a 32 year old declining shoot happy player. I wouldn't sign Arenas to anything but the minimum. The guy has knee problems and is too much of a ball hogging player that should never have opened his mouth saying how he wanted to play Cleveland in the first round. I would cut Stevenson just for the idiotic fact that he had the balls to call Lebron overrated. So how does it feel to lose again in the first round? You made your bed...time to sleep in it till next season

Posted by: Wizs suck | May 2, 2008 10:29 PM

It sounds like Mr. Pollin is ready to transition away from active involvement in ownership issues. If so, the new owner will bring his/her biases. It's hard to predict without knowing the person, but the record and coaching over the last several years has been mediocre, but the players are better than mediocre.

Obviously, the off-season starts with Gil, then AJ and then EJ. If Gil and AJ insist on EJ's return in order for them to commit, I would hope the new owner would take a hard line. Those sorts of decisions are made by the GM and owner, not the players.

Even without Gill and Twan, the Wiz have a good core of players. The Wiz would make the playoffs next year without Gil, Twan and EJ, so the new owner has a back-up strategy.

My preference is to give the Big 3 one more opportunity to show their stuff (presuming that they want it) -- but with a new head coach.

Posted by: Izman | May 2, 2008 10:29 PM

My prediction? Reactionary histrionics in this forum. So glad Ernie G is running this ship and not most of these fools

Posted by: Ben | May 2, 2008 10:31 PM

Hey Commish: the Cavs traded Brenda for Michael Doleac, not Christine Mihm.

Posted by: Cavs time | May 2, 2008 10:31 PM

well, the post is already making it clear that they won't publicly question whether eddie will be here. i expect nothing less.

Posted by: zach | May 2, 2008 10:34 PM

Well, they're treading water and I can't see them getting much better since the nucleus of the team is pretty much at the top of their careers. No room for (much) improvement.

Butler has room to improve but Jamison and Arenas - because of age and injury respectively - are maxxed out.

The window has closed on this group.

Start over.

Posted by: Steve | May 2, 2008 10:36 PM

I think Gilbert will be released. Jamison will be signed. Stevenson is a good player and the GM would get one major trade during the offseason. I think playoff is lot better then finishing at the bottom. This is great. Room was not built in one day. Give the GM time. He will do it. Coach may have to go....

Posted by: mazbar | May 2, 2008 10:37 PM

Why is it all our 3's are contested and their 3's are open? Do you fix that with new players or better coaches?

Posted by: CBaller | May 2, 2008 10:40 PM

WHERE THE HELL IS PRESCRUNK

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 10:41 PM

screw the wizards.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 10:42 PM

We need a true floor leader who is tough as nails. Andre Miller? Or, let's bring Alan Iverson back home. No one is tougher than he is and that's what this girlie team needs. Then maybe it wouldn't be jacking up 3's from all angles all night. Go for it Ernie. And if Avery Johnson gets fired, why does Eddie have a job? He's got talent on this team. What did Mo Cheeks have?

Posted by: Frank | May 2, 2008 10:44 PM

"Can this team take the next step as presently constructed?"

No. Not as constructed. Two things. One: They have to get deeper with their bigs, getting more production from the front line. Example. Haywood has to lean to get along with and play in a rotation with other players, an Etan Thomas or preferably somebody else. Caron and AJ are great but they're smallish and it catches up to them in the playoffs. Blatche isn't the answer. He's a bit player. Two: Gilbert has to come back healthy but play in a way that he makes his teammates better and not where they defer to him the minute the momentum shifts during the game.

They have a lot of the pieces and we're a lot closer than we've been for a lot years. Remember, this team was lost in the wilderness for decades. But they need help.

Posted by: Fenderdeluxe | May 2, 2008 10:46 PM

I believe you can do things with Tough Juice as the 2 guard...other than that... um well...

Can Gil lead a team at the point??
What about AJ at the 3 ??
Blatche at the 4?? Maybe
Haywood in the middle?? i guess...i think??

go to REALGM.COM and try the TRADE CHECKER ...LET's FIX the WIZ !!!

Posted by: cej75024 | May 2, 2008 10:47 PM

This team...the Wiz...is NOWHERE NEAR an NBA title. Reasons:

1. Little commitment to defense.
2. A VERY low basketball IQ.
3. Almost every NBA title team in recent decades, has had either an inside SCORING threat ...or an inside STOPPER....the Wiz have NEITHER !!!

These things are a FACT !!! And can't be denied. Smart teams with at least a nod tot he defensive end of the court win titles. This team is no better than a 4-5 seed in the freakin East.

Get used to it guys and girls...

Posted by: cej75024 | May 2, 2008 10:48 PM

Not exactly Wiz-related, but if Atlanta pulls out a win against the Celtics, the league office is going to have to find a way to suspend a whole bunch of Hawks to ensure the Celtics advance in game seven...

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 10:51 PM

It's really sad the way they "seem" to let LeBron have his way with them. But before him, Miami used to do the same. It's easy for someone not anywhere near NBA ready to say, but it seems like the Wizards are lacking a toughness--not expressed by head-smack/flagrant fouls, but by a defense that muscles folks into their game. Etan Thomas had that kind of fire, though he was still working on his low post game. They need power to go with their improving offense. Blatche as a starting number 4 with perhaps Butler going to the 2 spot. All the guys have worked hard in their positions, but something in the 2 and 3 spots has to change to compete with stronger teams.
That's my take.

Posted by: Arnold | May 2, 2008 10:52 PM

The Hawks came to play, unlike the Wiz. Nothing to do with the league office.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 10:52 PM

The wiz were better!?!?!?! They were better when they lost in 6 in o6. They were better in o7 when they lost in 4 (because of injuries), but they were at their BEST in o8 when then again lost in 6. In OUR minds, we are actually a BETTER team. If only the scoreboard COULD show that the best team is the Wizards (UNIVERSALLY AGREED among the players, WORLD REKNOWN BEAT writters and the friendliest fans).

Posted by: Not Sarcastic | May 2, 2008 10:55 PM

The problem plain and simple is the coaching. Eddie Jordan has no idea how to kill the other teams momentum by using time outs. He allowed the Cavs to have tremendous runs at the end of the 2nd Quarter of Game 4 and 6 without calling a timeout on his own. Also, if the team isn't running the offense, don't you call timeout and tell them to run the offense?

The defensive scheme does not work. Double teaming players up top leaves the other perimeter players open. Wouldn't we rather allow a contested 2 instead of a wide open 3.

Eddie has no control over the team or he doesn't think things through. Why would you leave an injured Arenas, who already is a bad defender on his best day, in at the end of game 4? Why would you leave Jamison in...he is another defensive liability.

The best scenario is Arenas doesn't opt out. The Wizards sign Jamison to a two year deal for much less than the 17 million he is getting this year. That way the contract of Arenas and Jamison end at the same time and if the team isn't any better, you can trade the expiring contacts to get two or more good players.

And, of course, a new coach.

Posted by: Devilish | May 2, 2008 11:01 PM

arenas is a cancer on this team. sad but true. he needs to be a number 2 or 3 player somewhere else. caron is the only keeper. songaila is okay. pecherov is a tall disappointment; blatche is a lazy kid who hasn't learned to play in years; daniels, too old; jamieson, old and small and courageous but outmatched in tough games. haywood is a mediocre on his best days. really a very very mediocre team. as always.

Posted by: rod | May 2, 2008 11:01 PM

you guys got taken to the wood shed. admit it.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:02 PM

@Izman

Ted Leonsis has first right of refusal to buy Pollin's ownership of the Wizards and his entity that owns the arena, ticketmaster, etc when he decides to sell.

He is a smart businessman and will spend the money at the right time as evidenced by his time as owner of the Caps.

Posted by: CapsFan | May 2, 2008 11:03 PM

Ivan, why do you even bother to ask these people? They can't coach...don't play...and all they want to do is blow up the team and have us go back to the cellar.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:06 PM

Ivan,

You tell me? This is one of the most important offseason's in forever. I trust EG though, but this is a crap shoot.

1) Even at 100%, I'm not sure GA is a championship caliber player! Will he ever be the same again? He was still SELFISH at 60/70%. Why would that ever change? Can he be a coachable player? He has never been to this point in his career.

2) Worried about CB. He is clearly not the same player he was before the all-star break and hip injury. Hope the off season changes that.

3) Once again, Jamison brings up the issue of whether he can be a championship starter
with his play the last few weeks. Numbers can be deceiving. The numbers he gives up are just as important!!!!

4) IMO, if you bring back the players and the coach, this team to me is still a 2nd round contender at BEST! Are you satisfied with that Wiz fans ? Some are.

Posted by: Rob P | May 2, 2008 11:07 PM

Keepers ( fo' sho )

Tough Juice
Blatche ( tooooo much potential )

How'd that taste DC? Need a box of tissues?
Talk talk talk , no action, just like the Congress. Guess all your booing of the best player in the NBA, only resulted in a triple double. Nice move!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, your team needs a major rebuild, except for Caron. Much as I hate the guy, I'd like to see him on my team.

Posted by: CryinCav | May 2, 2008 11:14 PM

Uh.. yeah. Woodshed, beatdown, schooling, smackdown, old fashioned whipping.

Congrats to the Cavaliers on winning a hard fought if not terribly competitive series. Best upside for Cleveland was your role players all stepped up tonight. Best of luck on your quest for a title.

Posted by: Dr. Strangelove | May 2, 2008 11:15 PM

Screw it.. Let's re-create the score-in-7-seconds Suns or the old nuggets that went for 140 every night.

Might not win a playoff game, but it would be fun

The pieces are in place! We just need a coach that embraces the concept. Mike D'antoni will be available. Perhaps Steve Spurier wants to coach basketball

Posted by: Cballer | May 2, 2008 11:17 PM

Eddie Jordan did a respectable job this year but we need a change. Rather than bring up questionable in-game management and strategy exhibited throughout the series, I'll just say we need a new voice to challenge our players. Someone to reign Gil in and increase our basketball IQ as a team.

I hope we can work things out for both Arenas and Jamison but at the right price. Arenas had the right intention but it just did not work. Jamison was our rock this year and could give us two more good years if we regulate his minutes and leave him on the floor when he should be on the floor.

I trust Grunsfeld to make it happen and hope we listen to his suggestions. If he goes, the ship tanks.

Posted by: Michael | May 2, 2008 11:19 PM

I think Gil is not going to opt out of his contract this offseason after everything that has transpired since the playoffs began. He is not 100%. He will not command the money he expects with his knee. He is tainted goods.

As for Jamison, he deserves to be re signed for what he has done. He is the leader of this team and we need that leadership especially with a young bench. I do not forsee anything major happening this offseason. The wizards had 98 man games lost to injury for their STARTING lineup alone.

The two issues they need to address and take a really deep look at this off season are perimeter defense and rebounding. For that being said, I would hope they take a good look at Elton Brand this offseason. Lets see what happens.....at least it is only 3 months until football season!

Posted by: Alex | May 2, 2008 11:21 PM

My guess is that Stevenson and Mason won't be on the squad next year. It looks like Grunfield is going to keep Arenas/Jamison/Butler as the core. If that's the case, they need a big 2 guard who can defend. EJ is a good coach, just had a bad break this year. As quirky as Arenas is, when he's healthy, he's a nightmare for opponents. I guess the Wiz need to run and gun b/c their D stinks as evident tonight.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:22 PM

Stupidest discussion ever.

Grunfeld will re-sign Jamison, re-sign Mason, and Arenas will not opt out.

End of story.

Ok...your lame. Is there not a Cavs blog? How many Wiz fans are on there? None I presume now or ever.

Major rebuild? I don't know about that. If we had a coach, we could just as easily won this series! Why would you hate CB? Bc he came from a terrible neighborhood and was a troubled teen, but is now more of a MAN than LeBron will ever be? And classier! He is not 100% either by the way, but we lost fair and square. You have won NOTHING yet so gloat somewhere else!

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:24 PM

Wow...what a bad loss. Things were going great early on, but then the team collapsed. The traveling rule was thrown out of the window for this game.

But, the Wiz lost because they resorted to too much one on one and long shots. Every stat is similar to the Cavs, except for the shooting percentage and assists, 29 - 11 in favor of the Cavs. Wally, Joe Smith, and Boobie had huge games...game over.

Oh well...congrats to all the guys for a great season.

3 post seasons? Please.

Don't come around here claiming last year counted with a Gilbert-less and Caron-less squad. That's just lame.

Posted by: Barno | May 2, 2008 11:25 PM

new coach.

sorry, but letting an opposing team blow you out to clinch in your own arena is inexcusable.

the players are partly to blame, but you're the coach. it starts with you. these ain't scrubs you're coaching.

i'm not anti-eddie jordan. i think he's been great. but he's hit his cieling. look at dallas firing avery johnson - and they actually won 60 games not too long ago.

it just has to happen. don't like it. but it has to be done.

Posted by: washington ball | May 2, 2008 11:28 PM

If you were at tonight's game and watched the Wiz huddle between 3rd and 4th periods, you would have seen Nick Young hiding his mouth with a towel and laughing it up like crazy. The kid can shoot, but who needs that kind of crap at that point in the season? He and Blatche need less Remy and more court and workout time. They are paid pro money --- time to earn it and stop the fooling around when the season's on the line.

Apparently they're going to Vegas next month --- supposedly for summer league. What a waste of time and money. Summer camp for rich stupids with talent going to ssed.

Well all the trash talking and assult and battery didn't work for such a weak minded but of thugs that play like morons. Like the KING said tonight after the game. He hasn't nothing to say to Deshawn the moron or the rest of the team. Cleveland wins series 4-2 and have won 12 out of 16 playoff games against you guys. Time to shut up and figure out what's wrong with you guys so you might be able to give us a good game.

Posted by: Cavs Fan | May 2, 2008 11:29 PM

i would say trade arenas for brand since we really need a low post scorer and arenas can go back to his hometown, he wants max money but he doesn't deserve it cause he isn't a leader, he still need to grow up alot, if we sign him, we would be at least a .500 team again but hey, i have a feeling that mr grunfield will keep the team as it is and maybe add more pieces (maybe diop? , a defensive mind center),

but i would say trade arenas, sign jamison for no more than 8 mil a year, def keep butler, keep haywood, blatche didn't do much and he seems to be an average player at best so i'll trade him if the right offer come along or package him with somebody else, release pech, trade mason keep young, i don't know its just my guess

Posted by: ak 47 | May 2, 2008 11:30 PM

Eddie Jorden is 229-278 in the regular season his career as head coach and 8-18 during the playoffs. Mike D'Dantoni's record is 267-172 during the regular season and 26-25 in the playoffs while Avery Johnsons regular season record is 264-194 and 23-24 for the playoffs. AJ is fired. MD is on the verge of being fired. AJ has taken his team to the finals. MD to the western conference finals. EJ has won 1 playoff series in his career as coach. What are the reasons the Wiz continue with Jordan? What reason do they have not to fire him? The Wiz have never won their division and haven't won a playoff series in 3 years. But things will be different next season. 5 seasons is the charm because we all know that EJ was the real brain behind the Nets one tim success and not Byron Scott whose teams have floundered since Jorden left.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:31 PM

everybody seems to have forgotten awfully quickly that arenas was a clutch player, a star not long ago. obviously, you keep him if there's a good possibility the knee gets better. obviously for less money now.

aj, class act that he is, has too go if the money is too high. the wizards have to get a strong, big PF in order to go farther. he doesn't have to score, but he has to play defense, get rebounds, and knock the hell out of penatrators.

blatche is a bit player, always will be. he's irrelavent.

is young any good? i don't think so, but management thinks he will be, then you let mason go.

if they get healthy, which is a big if, and get an effective PF, they can contend. for at least a couple rounds.

Posted by: stevie | May 2, 2008 11:34 PM

oh yeah, and new coach, the opponent got too many open shot in the series, many great coaches r in the market right now

Posted by: ak47 | May 2, 2008 11:34 PM

most of the idiots here don't realize that this is the most interesting team in the NBA as currently construed. I'd rather have the personalities and stories that develop with these players than some bum team like the
Cavs who seem to be like a bunch of wii mii's playing together. Gilbert needs to stay for his great play and even greater comic value. Don't u tards loving having a team that brings a smile to your face with their antics?

Posted by: the real deal | May 2, 2008 11:35 PM

Eddie Jordan did a hell of a job. He needs to be the Wiz's Jerry Sloan. Look what he did with Roger Mason. Gettin Blatche to live up to potential. He's a DC guy and should be given at least another five years of the benefit of the doubt. He's a professional ball coach who shouldnt have to babysit his players like a dorm nanny.

Don't the Wiz have two first round picks in next year's draft? We need to grow our own talent instead of trying to buy it.

Posted by: RJ | May 2, 2008 11:36 PM

Posted by: stevie | May 2, 2008 11:34 PM

well i wouldnt risk signing arenas cause he seems to get injure over and over again on the same knee which is seemed to be a bad sign, and i feel arenas wouldn't accept less money even though he said it in front of the media, i would trade him while he still have good value now,

Posted by: ak47 | May 2, 2008 11:38 PM

get rid of ej. dont sign gilbert hes finished. dont resign jamison and get rid of destink. aside from that keep everything in tact.
prediction: they dont do anything and keep everyone because thats the way they do business. and next year will be more of the same.
btw, way not to play nick young, only your best shooter next to caron. good job.
maybe you can trade him for another destink.

Posted by: the real deal | May 2, 2008 11:35 PM

well, actually sir, im sick and tired of all the smile if we get our butt kick in the first round every year. we never was a great team with arenas anyway, and never will be. the regular season and playoff record speak for themselves

Posted by: ak47 | May 2, 2008 11:42 PM

And another thing to you stupids who think that this team need only build around butler--look what happened this game today. Butler isn't primetime like Arenas is. He kept settling for jumpers till the end, you think arenas woulda done that? Butler is great and he is tough, but Arenas is the real deal in terms of bringing it when adversity strikes. You fannnntassstic fans forget that this team was #1 when the big 3 performed their magic act together. I suggest you pessimistic bums take the wrenches out of your brain so the gears can start churning smoothly again.

Posted by: the real deal | May 2, 2008 11:43 PM

hard to say if Jordan should get canned.

on the one hand, he got them to the playoffs again. wasn't long ago just that much would have been consider a great feat. he also got them there with his best players injured a huge percentage of the time. also, he's rarely had his best players playing in the playoffs, which is a pretty signficant handicap.

on the other hand, the wizards play with little discipline. they can never play a whole game without throwing up a bunch of 3s indiscrimitively, or stop playing defense. got to look at the coach on those, although the players could be incorrigible.

it's not cut and dry. if i had an outstanding candidate in hand, i'd have to think pretty hard about it.

Posted by: stevie | May 2, 2008 11:43 PM

Ivan,

You know what the deal is: keep the nucleus intact. We saw EG on WPL today and he straight up said we're signing Arenas and Jamison, so there shouldn't be any drama.

An Ode to the Washington Witnesses

By Amar Panchmatia | May 2nd, 2008

E-mail | Print | Share

Now that we've made an annual tradition out of the Cleveland Cavaliers beating the Washington Witnesses in the first round of the playoffs, it's time to honor the recipients of this rare and unique treatment.

Let's face it: it's hard to lose to one damn team in the postseason over and over again. Yet, the Witnesses have achieved this feat flawlessly. They lost in six to a Cavs team that was a playoff virgin in '06. They were hurt and undermanned in getting swept out by the James Gang in '07. And they trash-talked, cheap-shotted, and whined their way to another six-game loss in '08.

Truly versatile. My hat is off to Eddie Jordan, Gilbert Arenas, and the rest of the Witnesses for creating an art form out of losing to LeBron James. The only thing left is giving your fans infinite hope that this...might...be...the...year you beat King James and forcing it to seven games, only to lose to LeBron in Game 7.

Hey, that's what 2009 is for.

These Witnesses, however, have been the most special group of them all. So special, in fact, that each one of them deserves a special farewell salute as they go home early for summer vacation courtesy of the Cavs yet again.

Gilbert Arenas: Remember these words?

"I think everybody wants Cleveland in that first round. They've been a .500 team ever since they made that trade and everybody wants a chance at that matchup...We want Cleveland for our own reasons, we don't think they can beat us in the playoffs three years straight. It's hard to beat a team three years straight. We want to try our luck."

Well, the Cavs were a .667 team in the postseason against your Witnesses, Gilbert. That's actually worse than the .800 winning percentage they've had against your squad as the previous two postseasons combined, so I see your point about Cleveland getting worse. You may want to think twice before calling out a team that has your number again and again and again. Especially when that team has a player that eats you for breakfast, brunch, lunch, mid-afternoon snacks, supper, dinner, and still won't leave any of you left over for midnight snacks.

"Everybody wants Cleveland in that first round." Sure, that might be true, but you're the Washington Witnesses. The last thing you want is a playoff series with LeBron James.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:47 PM

Brenda Haywood: Today, we salute you, Brenda. Pioneers like you and Laura Hughes have shown that the WNBA isn't the only outlet for young women looking to pursue a career in professional basketball.

Trying to mock LeBron whining and then telling him to shut up and play basketball was a true sign of leadership on your part. I mean, screw leading by example. So what if you were part of a frontcourt that was beat, 51-31, on the boards in Game 4? So what if the rest of your team was amped up for Game 4 and claimed that they wanted to win that game badly to send a message? The game came down to one last shot, anyways, so the minus-20 rebounding deficit couldn't have made that much of a difference, right?

When you average 7.5 points and 5.9 rebounds a game and then try to play the role of a safety in football in a basketball game, you're clearly qualified to tell LeBron James to "play basketball." So what if he's ended your season in convincing fashion for three straight seasons? He's the one that needs to focus on just playing basketball, not you! You tell 'em, Brenda!

Guys,

I think it's pretty obvious that we can hang with about any team without Gilbert. I'm not knocking Gil, but resigning him should not be a necessity. In addition, Jamison looked a little old and tired during crunch time of this series. I would not sign him any longer than a three year deal. I think he is a solid Co-Captain and a good model for this team. I think we desperately need to upgrade a point guard this offseason. Gil is NOT a true PG. Do we look to the draft? Do we look to Free Agency? I don't know, but I hope we don't overpay and sign Gil, and Twan to lucrative long-term deals when that is not the right move to make.

Posted by: Max (Miami) | May 2, 2008 11:48 PM

another thing about either EJ or his players. it was obviously they would get blown out after pulling out game 5. they've done that all season, play a good one, go on vacation for the next.

so whose fault is that?

Posted by: stevie | May 2, 2008 11:48 PM

Andray Blatche: You just don't know any better, Andray. You're in your third NBA season, all of which have been with the Witnesses. A world in which your season doesn't end in the hands of Cleveland just doesn't exist to you. There's death, taxes, and losing to the Cavaliers in the first round.

Hitting LeBron in the face in Game 1 was a good start in trying to alter your destiny in life, but you can't change fate. And if I'm not mistaken, you did have a change to change your fate last offseason when you could have signed with the Cavs as a free agent. But hey, you seem to be enjoying this. Get used to it.

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:48 PM

Caron Butler: It's too bad, Caron. I truly like you. You're one of my favorite players in the NBA, and your story is inspiring. Heck, I was pissed off when that idiot Paxson passed up on you in the '02 draft to take Dajuan Wagner at no. 6. But you're a small forward, and we've got a better one in Cleveland, so maybe everything worked out for the best, yeah?

Antawn Jamison: You're a good guy, but I'll never forget how you wrecked my chances of winning my NCAA pool back in '98 by choking against Utah. It's okay, though. I won because of Rip Hamilton and UConn the following year.

Don't u tards loving having a team that brings a smile to your face with their antics?

Posted by: the real deal | May 2, 2008 11:35 PM

well, actually sir, im sick and tired of all the smile if we get our butt kick in the first round every year. we never was a great team with arenas anyway, and never will be. the regular season and playoff record speak for themselves

Posted by: ak47 | May 2, 2008 11:42 PM

I know you got a lotta bullet points in your AK47, but don't u remember we did get to the 2nd round a couple of years ago? Do you forget that both butler and arenas were injured last year which is why last year doesn't even count in my mind. As far as getting kicked out two years ago, you know we got jobbed out of that series. But it was well-played and extremely enjoyable. This year we didn't have anyone that could close, and Arenas was hobbled the whole time. I can't believe how quick people forget about how relieved we were just to get to the playoffs after all those years where calbert cheaney was our best player. The only thing you all need to hope for is health next year and the cleveland cav-a-tears won't be a problem

Posted by: the real deal | May 2, 2008 11:49 PM

Ivan,

You know what the deal is: keep the nucleus intact. We saw EG on WPL today and he straight up said we're signing Arenas and Jamison, so there shouldn't be any drama.

Posted by: Adam | May 2, 2008 11:46 PM

we keep saying that for years now and see what happen, we always lost in the first round every time, it hard to believe that eg still want to keep the team intact..

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:51 PM

we often ....

go small at the end of games and can't get the critical stops and rebounds we need to close games out

go through games without making adjustments

go through many minutes when the other team is on a run without calling a timeout.

have the least assists in the history in the princeton offense

end up settling for jumpers

and at the same time, it seems we can't develop our youth & bench. remember that mason was a tremendous college player who was a high 2nd round draft pick. injuries slowed him down. it just took him longer to find a role in the nba.

Posted by: michael | May 2, 2008 11:52 PM

anybody who thinks it had anything to do with losing the series... well, that's just ridiculous. they also think win of for the gipper speeches actually win games....

and another thing, why the heck are you bums worried about who's gonna get max money or not? No money out of your pocket, obv Ernie probly knows what he's doing. I bet you all were the same toads who cried tears of joy when mitch ritchmond came here for Chris Webber.

EJ let the team get out of control. There is no way we could have gotten the benefit of some non-calls when we brought so much attention with all the talking we did.Our play although hard was percived as dirty due to our players big mouths asmuch as it was by Lebrons acting. We dont play smart. We dont exeute a game plan for more than 5 minutes and then it's a primetime show for dstevensons antics. Deshawn dont act like something your not, Youve averaged 8.7 pts for your career. You were a first round pick and youre a distraction for the professionals on this team. Please go somewhere else and help them.On the early morning of August 20, 2007, a 31-year-old man, Curtis Ruff, was shot and injured at Stevenson's home, following an argument with women that were invited from Destiny's Club in Orlando, Florida. Circumstances of the incident remain unclear.".[4]

Posted by: the real deal | May 2, 2008 11:58 PM

we need more character on this team not more characters

Posted by: | May 2, 2008 11:59 PM

Darius getting suspended in tonights game is a major disappointment and embarrassment for the entire league. It changed the whole aspect of the game. Is he the star of the Wizards? No, but he is a veteran player who doesnt play scared and puts in valuable minutes. He was not allowed in the building either. What? With that said, Cleveland shot great tonight. Wally finally showed up for a game and Delonte was amazing again. LeBron is a beast!!! He does not need the help of the NBA upper management. If the Cavs shoot this good they will be hard to stop. I love the Wizards, a fan since 1984, but this series has put a sour taste in my mouth for NBA basketball.
I hate to say it but the Wiz need a shake up. With Brendon stepping up and becoming a solid center, Roger becoming a solid bench player, and the young players showing flashes of serious ballin and Caron wanting to be the main man. It's time to move on. Clear the salary cap space of Zero, and AJ. I would love to sign AJ again but not for league max. We need a point guard who passes before he shoots. I know, tough to find.
I think Zero needs to grow up a bit. He also is uncoachable. I do not question his heart or ability but he will have to change the way he operates if he wants to go to the next level. Be professional Gil. I love you man but you need to more of a team player and leader. Listen to coach and be respectful.

Posted by: richerich | May 3, 2008 12:00 AM

We ARE a better team with Arenas. Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply incompetent. The only reason we appeared to be better off without him in the line up is because for the entire season, the Wizards got used to playing without Agent 0. When he comes back, it throws the team chemistry off. If we could go a full year with no serious injury problems, we've got championship caliber talent

The Curse of Les Boulez continues...

Let's face it, the Bullets/Wizards are never going to be contenders as long as it's a second rate organization. And they're going to be a second rate organization as long as Abe Pollin owns the team. With all due respect to the man who built the Verizon Center, we need an owner with the vision, patience and open checkbook to build a winning team. One need only look to what Ted has done with the Caps to know what's wrong with the Bullets/Wizards.

It's time for Abe to retire and sell the team to someone who can build a professional organization. 30 years of mediocrity and cronyism is enough.

OK, 2 possible sign & trades which seem to make sense for both teams:

1. The get bigger idea: Gilbert for Elton Brand. Shift AJ to the 3, Caron to the 2.
2. The replacement idea: Gilbert for Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich. This might overload the Wiz at the 2.

Keep dreaming.

Wiz don't need Arenas. Wiz need an inside presence at the 4 who can keep the defense honest and play defense himself.

Arenas is washed up as a player. A player who relies on quickness is done once his wheels get hurt. Arenas has proven to be in injury prone, and the Wiz would be stupid to pay big money for a guard who's broken down like Arenas.

The reason I believe so many people have lost faith in Eddie has to do with the fact that each loss in this series seemed like the same game. There were consistent themes to our play that killed us, and it was hard to believe they could continue killing themselves in the same exact ways.

-Deshawn jacking up 3's after steals, or at emotional moments when you KNEW he didn't have the mental toughness to hit them

-Lebron passing out of double teams for wide open three's that were consistently drained

-Cleveland abusing the wizards on the offensive boards by SIMPLY tipping balls out instead of trying to grab rebounds

-absolutely no offensive strategy whatsoever by the wizards, who were completely unprepared for the double teams used by Cleveland, and didn't even bother to adjust

-a lack of emotional control by our starters when reacting to anything positive or negative. over celebrating shots and a never ending stream of talk with the officials about no calls

All of this screams terrible coaching to me. please tell me i'm wrong, I wish i didn't believe this but it seems undeniable at this point.

"Commonly, people believe that defeat is characterized by a general bustle and a feverish rush. Bustle and rush are the signs of victory, not of defeat. Victory is a thing of action. It is a house in the act of being built. Every participant in victory sweats and puffs, carrying the stones for the building of the house. But defeat is a thing of weariness, of incoherence, of boredom. And above all of futility."

Wiz Brass needs to decide what kind of a "better team" they want next year:

(a) a "better team" in the sense of your 5 guys on the floor acting as a single, cohesive unit, in which case you get as much as you can in exchange for Gil; continue to develop Mason, Blache, Young and Songalia to go with a Caron/AJ/Haywood core; draft for height and defense; maybe squeeze another year or two from Daniels; and keep Eddie on as Coach;
or
(b) a "better team" in the sense of offensive firepower, in which case you keep Gil (assuming his knee is truly OK); get a new coach who emphasizes a run-and-gun approach; trade AD/AJ/Song/Etan for the best value you can get; and develop Blache, Young, Dominic, (maybe Mason) and new additions & draft picks selected for speed and open-floor ability.

Or we can stay the course and likely end up in the playoffs once again next year, and be bounced from the first round once again next year.

Well, we are just too inconsistent right now to do anything in the playoffs. We can't escape that we're still just a glorified .500 team. Some think it's about Eddie, but I don't.

I think you have to have the right players as well as the system to maximize them.

You can take a negative view of things and say that this team is a bunch of overpaid underachievers with a weak coach who will never get past the first round of the playoffs.

But even that has the seeds of something positive in it - it's better to make the playoffs than to not make them - and we've made them 3 years in a row.

Guess what? Either way, Ernie knows what we need on the floor, and he'll get it. We still need another big, strong, athletic player who isn't an offensive liability, and we need more overall toughness, both mental and physical.

Whether the guys we have can develop into that, or whether he needs to go out and get it - I trust that he will. He got Songaila, and I like his game for this team. Too bad we didn't have him tonight.

I think Butler took too long to show up tonight, but I still like him for this team. He needs to get physically stronger and tougher so he can be at full strength next year. He also needs to augment the pull-up and catch- and-shoot dimensions of his game.

How can Jamison be washed up? He averages a double double. I like Antawn Jamison and I can't imagine a team that he wouldn't improve in some way, but it's a question of money. However, you get Gil cheaper if you pay Antawn first - Gil said so.

I like Gil too. How can we get rid of a talent like that? Unless he can't come all the way back, and I don't think that's the case.

I'm sick of Haywood, but if Eddie and Ernie want to give him another year, ok.

Blatche is good
Songaila is good
Mason is good
Young is nice
McGuire is raw and can't shoot. Maybe he'll improve next year.
Deshawn...well now...what about him? He's no Bruce Bowen on D, he's inconsistent, and a loudmouth too.

I say keep him anyway. He comes cheap, shows up every day, plays hard, hits free throws, does a little bit of everything including 3's.

He just needs a home.

What about the Poet? Where does he fit in?

Pecherov is showing signs of life. I can't see leaving him off the roster next year, with his size and ability.

Ernie is very competent, and he will only stand pat if he is sure that the team is on an uptrend. Stay tuned.

As of now, we have a perennial playoff team. We'll just have to live with that.

That is overrated, I woulda had a triple double against the Wiz today seeing as to how they kept jacking up 3s. The fact is that you idiot Cav-Nots keep thinking that you beat us at full-strength. You just faced He-Man without his sword basically, next year will destroy death skull James and in such a way that there will be a multitude of Wiz fans in Cleveland. And those Wiz fans will throw tomatoes at the actor King Lames till he weeps in tears of V-8 in his oversized sunglasses. Muuhooo haahahah clevland!!!!

Keep Arenas and build around him. He's a superstar. Hope that Arenas can do after knee-surgery what he did before.

Get rid of either Jamison or Butler. Jamison: although his calming influence is great for the team, I think it's time to tinker and move on. We've given it a shot with Jamison and the combo of Jamison and Arenas hasn't been enough to get it done (2006). Caron, I could go either way on. Stevenson is a good player but needs to calm down, and his influence isn't good for Gilbert. Another tough call but I would keep him for another season.

I just want to see the rematch when Arenas is healthy and has another shot at LeBron in the playoffs. Maybe next year...

"The reason I believe so many people have lost faith in Eddie has to do with the fact that each loss in this series seemed like the same game."

No, the reason is that some people have a decidedly unrealistic and borderline delusional notion that this team has the talent to contend when it flat, plain does not.

Bringing in a new coach to coach tis same group will produce similar results. This team has too many missing pieces (low post presence, physical inside presence, bench scoring, athleticism, size, individual ability to create offense) to be more than what they are no matter who coaches. Some significant changes/additions need to be made. That doesn't necessarily mean breaking up the big three, but given the teams' lack of trade-worthy assets, it may be a necessity.

hey "Posted by: | May 3, 2008 12:39 AM" if you want a CAPS attack come to DC!!! And I do talk about next year just like you will be after this next series when Queen Lames gets so confused for not getting the same calls as she got this series that she has a hissy fit and stomps of the court to the song "it's my party and I'll cry if I want to". Trust me, if Gil was 100% this series woulda been won in a jiffy. We woulda skunked you in fact, by beating you each game by an average of 150 points.

Posted by: | May 3, 2008 12:43 AM

I love a good rank-out

Posted by: | May 3, 2008 12:45 AM

Yes, Gil woulda had a 150 point game and Deshawn woulda had 100 steals.

Posted by: the real deal | May 3, 2008 12:45 AM

It hurts to see my team lose, but they played an exciting season. Those wins against the Celtics will be burned in my memory for a long time to come. Hope to see everyone healthy next year, and to see some development from the younger players.

My wish list:

Arenas - learns to play more without the ball, and in particular, learns to set Caron up with easy buckets. If Kobe can learn to do this, so can Gilbert. But he's going to have to stop relying on long-distance jumpers, he can't effectively distribute the ball standing still at the three point line.

Antawn - stays healthy, picks up the defensive pressure a little. A 20 & 10 guy who can get blocks and steals - you couldn't ask for much more.

Caron - ditto, + learns how to remain assertive while playing alongside Gilbert, and focuses on getting to the hole more often. I know that his injuries bothered him in this series, but he disappeared completely for stretches, and that can't happen. He's got to become more consistent.

Blatche - gets more consistent in his shooting, and gets more confident. His talent is remarkable, but he'll never get to show it if he can't play more.

Nick Young - learns to play defense, particularly against larger opponents. It's the only way he'll ever see any minutes.

Dom McGuire - plays more offense, and increases his speed/quickness, and ball-handling, and shooting. The only thing we've seen him do well is make hustle plays on defense.

Pecherov - gets back to rebounding, and develops his shot. If he can get back to being the rebounder, they can find time for him on the court.

Roger Mason - works on his quickness and strength. If Mason develops a slasher mentality, he could be very tough to guard. Right now he's more catch & shoot from a standstill.

Antonio Daniels - stays healthy, and learns to work off of screens more effectively. He can shoot it, it's just a matter of breaking free from younger, quicker defenders.

Haywood - continues to develop that 10-foot jumper, and gets better at moving with the ball. You can't ask a whole lot more than what he gave this season, we saw great improvements from him. I'd like to see him getting more involved on offense. If Tyson Chandler can be made to look like a dominant presence, then I see no reason Haywood can't become a more consistent offensive threat.

Deshawn - develops his quickness and passing, and works on finishing inside. He can shoot it from 3, but can he take his man off the dribble? We didn't see much of that this season.

Posted by: satch | May 3, 2008 12:46 AM

fYes, Gil woulda had a 150 point game and Deshawn woulda had 100 steals.

Alexander Mueller:
"Just as a person's attitude can be hidden from him, i.e. unconscious, so can his true goals. This can often lead to the impression that the human psyche is a field replete with inconsistent, even contrary strivings. Although the unity of the psyche has not been sufficiently explored, experience has demonstrated very clearly: when being dominated or possessed by whatever is perceived to be alien to the 'I', man is a partner - 'when man permits himself to be dominated by his passions ...' (Berdyayev). We are not dominated by anything, but we can allow ourselves to be captured by something and thus be made into an object. Feelings, forces, powers apparently can break into our conscious life autonomically and slow it down, paralyze it, or negate it (c'est plus fort que moi). They will seem to be overpowering, because man cannot admit to being possessed by them since they are contrary to his self-ideal or touch his feelings of self-worth; or his behavior and activities can be carried on only when the goals are left in the unconscious, hidden."

All this junk about Lebron James being the "king", and all the fans being "witnesses", and the trash commercials riffing on religious themes, the ads with the crucifix postures, etc., is offensive. In fact, it's heretical. Why would Cavs fans be surprised that so many people hate their star player? He's all but claimed to be Jesus Christ. Nevermind series trash talk, let's talk about the garbage that this man says in the name of self-promotion.

In fact, it's heretical. Why would Cavs fans be surprised that so many people hate their star player? He's all but claimed to be Jesus Christ. Nevermind series trash talk, let's talk about the garbage that this man says in the name of self-promotion.

You are serious aren't you? That is so scary. Get a life loser. FYI his Jersey sales are top 5 every year. Do you think the haters are all burning them? Silly ass

SCOREBOARD

A long summer ahead and EG is going to have some serious thinking to do. Cleveland got value for its trading spree tonight... Wally Wonder stepped up and Joe Smith had a nice game, neither of which happened on Wednesday and both of which were far more valuable contributions than the Cavs would have gotten from Gooden and Hughes.

Plus Boobie was on fire.

LeBron needed only to be the straw that stirred the drink and his triple double did that convincingly.

Do the Wizards have the courage to clean house, or does the house need to be cleaned all that much? The X factor is whether one thinks that Arenas will be intact next season. This holds whether he is to remain a Wizard or is used as trade bait for another signature player. My guess is sign him, keep him and hope he is still the real deal.

Butler is a keeper but it would be a mistake to think he is the player you can build a team around. He is for sure someone you want in your foxhole, though.

Jamison is the trading chip in all this. He is now at his peak value and needs to be packaged with a good role player like Mason and traded for a young buck with long term potential... my choice is LaMarcus Aldridge.

Haywood should stay but he should get help, which is why I think we should draft big... Hibbert is my choice but the kid from Connecticut is in the mix.

If Gilbert is the X factor then Nick Young is the Y... he is at the crossroads at a relatively early point in his career, one road says Rip Hamilton, the other says a smaller Ricky Davis... one more year to find out.

Andray Blatche should be used as trade bait now, he looked great for about two minutes tonight and then zip in what could have been his breakout game... bet you all did not realize how integral Songaila was to this team! Someone could be persuaded to give us a valuable rotation player for Blatche and we would win on that deal. Think of it as an 80% approximation of getting Butler for Brown.

Antonio Daniels is another player who, like Jamison, should be traded while he still has value. He is a fine back-up point guard and played very well for us as a fill-in starter this year; but he was unfortunately the man who made the critical error in the third quarter of tonight's game, passing up a wide-open 3 that could have brought us back into the game. Instead it morphed into a turnover that led to a Cleveland trey for a six-point turnaround. Whatever else he can or cannot do, my money says Gilbert Arenas would have taken that shot and drained it.

Last but not least is the coach. Eddie Jordan has done a good job here, but perhaps it is time to admit that he is not the one to lead the Wizards from the adequacy he has delivered to the promised land we all yearn for. D'Antoni could be the one to do it, though Toronto might be a better fit for him... I would go after him though, and make the adjustments needed to give him the type of team he can coach best. Beyond the obvious coaching skill he possesses, there is a hunger there that needs to be fed.

The East will be tougher next year for sure. Atlanta is giving Boston fits and has plenty of youth and energy. Charlotte needed someone with experience and smarts to coach their good collection of young players and perhaps Larry Brown has one more shot in him (he is a contemporary so I wish him well). Philly is not a complete fluke. And so on down the line.

The Wizards have to make some very wise choices to stay viable, much less to rise higher. Hopefully they will. They are still the team I cheer for and have been for 40 years and counting.

Keep Arenas on the bench and build build a wall around him. He's NOT a superstar. Hope that Arenas can sit for long periods of time after knee-surgery like he did before.

Get rid of either Jamison or Butler. Jamison: because he is the only guy on the team with any class and thats bad for the teams image, I think it's time to tinker and move on. We've given it a shot with Jamison and the combo of Jamison and Arenas hasn't been enough to get it done (2006). Caron, I could go either way on. Stevenson is not a good player, in fact he sucks but we need him to remain yhe laughing stock of the league. Another tough call but just for laughs I would keep him for another season.

I just want to see the rematch when Arenas is healthy and has another shot at LeBron in the playoffs because I am really startin to like getting our butts whipped every year. Maybe next year we can do it again.

Another year, another Wizards playoff exit thanks to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Uh ... no. Not that I wouldn't love to see Aldridge in a Wiz uni, but there's no way in hell Portland makes that deal. Having already fleeced
