Songaila Suspended for Game 6
The NBA has suspended Wizards forward Darius Songaila for tonight's Game 6. Songaila was given a technical foul during the first half of Game 5 after hitting Cavaliers star LeBron James in the face after the two became tangled up underneath the Washington basket.
Songaila was not given a flagrant foul at the time of the play and Wizards' Coach Eddie Jordan argued that he did not deserve the technical either. Songaila said the contact which involved his left arm and James' face, was unintentional.
"We got tangled up, my arm got caught inside of his and when I tried to free myself, my arm caught him in the face," Songaila said yesterday before the suspension was announced. "It was an accident. He lifted my arm and it caught him in the face. If anything, it was caused by him. It wasn't intentional or anything."
Also yesterday, Jordan said he still believed that Songaila did not deserve the technical.
"I stand my ground," Jordan said. "I thought he got tangled up with LeBron and LeBron tried to get untangled and in his method of getting untangled, Darius's arm flew up and at his chest."
Added Jordan: "And LeBron's a terrific actor. We've all seen his commercials."
James has been on the receiving end of several hard fouls in the series, including one in Game 2 that earned center Brendan Haywood a flagrant 2 foul and a suspension. In Game 1, James elbowed Wizards forward Andray Blatche in the face and later received a flagrant 1 foul from the league.
The decision to suspend the 6-foot-9 Songaila, who also plays some center as a backup to Haywood leaves the Wizards dangerously thin in the front court and likely means that inconsistent third-year forward-center Andray Blatche will see heavy minutes in Game 6.
Songaila has averaged 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 15.2 minutes in the series. Blatche is averaging 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds in 15.1 minutes. The Cavaliers will try to eliminate the Wizards from the first round for the third straight season.
UPDATE: According to a league source, the NBA was close to suspending DeShawn Stevenson after Stevenson hit James in the head with an elbow while trying to block a shot during Game 4. Instead, the league warned the Wizards that if any player made contact to James's head or face it would lead to an automatic suspension.
That being said, is Songaila's blow to James - when the two were tangled up, nonetheless - any worse than this shot from James to Andray Blatche? In case you forgot, here it is again.

My elbows are not as powerful as Songaila's fingers. (Phil Masturzo/Akron Beacon Journal)
James got a retroactive flagrant for that one. Songaila received a technical - and a suspension?

that is a travesty considering lebron got a RETROACTIVE flagrant that we never received free throws for. This kind of double standard and league favoritism really tarnishes the NBA.
Posted by: zach | May 2, 2008 12:52 PM
This is a disgrace and a travesty and simply proves the games are FIXED. The NBA wants Lebron to go to the next round and I'm sure whiny Lebron and Mike Brown complained to them. I watched the game on Comcast and if anyone was to blame for the foul, it was Lebron!!
We are sunk.....
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 12:54 PM
complete BS, the NBA is really run by the mob. lebron gives and INTENTIONAL ELBOW and gets a slap on the wrist behind the scenes.
NBA we know what's going, destroying the game...a-holes.

the playoffs are FIXED!!!!
but we still got out of Cleveland alive...
I have confidence in Blatche.
go wiz!!

No small ball tonight! Even OP might get the call. Adversity builds character.
Wiz-men, no complaining until after the series, even as bizarre as the disparity in treatment may appear.
Posted by: Izman | May 2, 2008 12:57 PM
the NBA has become completely ridiculous. how is this fair when lebron only gets a flagrant for an elbow to the face? grow some balls NBA, and don't let outside forces control you!

here here Izman!
Posted by: prescrunk | May 2, 2008 12:58 PM
This upsets me because the cavs were going to win tonight even with Songaila in there and now everyone on this board will have an excuse as to why the Wiz lose tonight instead of blaming the real flaw with this team.....coaching
Posted by: DClvr | May 2, 2008 12:58 PM
So let's get this straight. Jason Kidd tries to smash open Jannero Pargo's head like a watermelon... no suspension. Songaila accidentally slaps Lebron... suspension.
OK, makes sense.
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 12:59 PM
The only consolation is that Jordan won't be able to use his beloved Songalia at center Antawn at PF lineup that inevitably leads to 2 Cleveland offensive boards per possession. Still, normally Stern is not so blatant in fixing games for his Golden Child. At least now he's stepping forward and admitting he wants The King to keep playing and generating ratings.
Posted by: Dellis | May 2, 2008 1:00 PM
Whatever, yes the NBA is fixed, they suspend a backup who committed a much less foul than Haywood did when he got the flagrant 2. That should have been the suspension. The NBA is tired of the Wizards "act".
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 1:00 PM
This is completely nuts!
Posted by: Anon | May 2, 2008 1:01 PM
Really surprised with this suspension. The Lebron elbow, the Haywood push, the Stevenson head slap, The Varejao hit....they were all worse that Darius' foul. You can't say it was because it was on LeBron either because Haywood didn't get suspended and his foul was much more dangerous. I wonder if Stu Jackson will explain his reasoning behind this
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 1:01 PM
I'm speechless. That should never have even been a tech in the first place, and now he gets SUSPENDED? For what? For LeBron's Emmy-winning CRY-BABY act??
Verizon Center..give 'em hell tonight
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 1:01 PM
This did look to be LeBron's doing from where I was sitting and the replays. The fact that it was upgraded after a tape review is stunning to me. Maybe this is the league's way of saying "the Cavs should have driven at Songaila and fouled him out when he came in for Haywood with 5 fouls". I think this is an NBA conspiracy to get the Cavs to the 2nd round! Stu Jackson is in Nike's pocket! IT'S A CONSPIRACY AGAINST THE WIZ!!!
Glad I'm a Cavs fan :)

Posted by: prescrunk | May 2, 2008 1:04 PM
Obviously the fix is in. David Stern has deemed the Wizards unfit for the playoffs. You think maybe LeBron went crying to stern like he did to Jay-Z? Or did David Stern just take it upon himself to kill the Wizards hopes. Not once but twice (the weird call at the end of the Philly game).
Posted by: Bart | May 2, 2008 1:04 PM
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! I shouldn't be surprised though. The NBA is getting worried that the Cavs might be in trouble of not advancing, so they had to take some preventative measures.
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 1:04 PM
The NBA is a joke! I am starting to believe these games are fixed and the NBA commissioner is in bed with Lebron James...

Posted by: Ben | May 2, 2008 1:05 PM
Lets fix the league by suspending a backup PF that makes sense. Butler, Jamison and Haywood aren't the reason the Wizards are playing well, it is obviously Songaila.
Come on guys, this suspension stinx but at least Blatche is a serviceable replacement.
I see the refs calling a lot of fouls tonight....Varejao is going to get a flagrant/ejection

The NBA stinks!!!!!!!
They are doing everyhting to let Lebaby and his groupd of underrated players and coaches get to the next round.

Talk about a sabotage attempt!
Lebron took DSong's arm and b$tch slapped himself. Then acted like he just took a hit from Lennox Lewis.
"I can't feel my jaw!!!"
In contrast, Lebron swung an elbow at AB's jaw, deliberately, and only got fined..and late, and the Wiz didn't benefit from a technical!!!!
WTF?!?!?!
I really hope the VC fans get rowdy tonight. I think the ending tonight is inevitable. It's fixed.
If the refs get out of hand, somebody needs to pearl harbor Lebron's knees.
Posted by: DC Man88 | May 2, 2008 1:06 PM
This hurts the frontcourt rotation, but that's why you have someone like Blatche who will need to step up. He's got the abilities to help the team out.
That's just a really bad matchup for him on Z when Haywood is out of the game.
Haywood needs to stay out of foul trouble, and that's an understatement.
Posted by: Krem | May 2, 2008 1:07 PM
If you watch the play solely from the perspective of Songaila's hand it looks intentional, but when you focus on Lebron trying to yank his arm away, it looks completely accidental. Judging a play like this is soooo arbitrary, and decisions like this just shouldn't happen.
The NBA is an embarrassment. I'm just glad the players make the game/playoffs interesting enough to watch.

Ivan and Michael:
What is your opinion on the play? I tend to agree wit EJ that when LeBron tried to pull out of the entanglement Darius' arm came up as well. Very surprised Stu Jackson did not see it that way. I know the NBA can look at this series for its cumulative fouls but I had hoped they would look at each one on an individual basis. Probably too much to ask.

1) Call the NBA office at 212-407-8000
2) Ask to be connected to Stu Jackson's office
3) Ask if Mt. Jackson is available. When your told that he is not, ask if you could please have his voicemail. When the assistant asks for your name, man up and give your real name
4) Leave a **clean** and **tactful** message, expressing your outrage at this decision. *Offer no personal attacks or insults on Stu Jackson.* Leave your real name and a number where he can reach you if he wishes to discuss further.
The NBA needs to understand that its paying customers will not stand for this nonsense. Please, follow these steps responsibly.

And what about Big Z's elbow to Songaila's face that allowed LeBron to drive to the basket for a jam. I guess we can look forward to a flagrant foul or technical from the league office on Monday, after the series is over. Thanks Stern.

Posted by: DC Man88 | May 2, 2008 1:15 PM
Ridiculous. It's hard to even get riled up about things like this anymore. This league may as well have just kept Tim Donaghy on the payroll. The double standard for stars is understandable but still stinks. I would understand a fine but a suspension, no way.
Like others have said, we can make lemonade out of lemons. No more small ball. AB and the bench played well in our blowout victory. I see no reason why he can't do it again. I second the idea of giving Pech a few minutes. He's no worse a defender or rebounder than Songaila thouh he's not nearly as good of a passer.
Posted by: mark | May 2, 2008 1:15 PM
Just felt the need to chime in with my own outrage.
Simply unbelievable. I don't see how the NBA can make an argument that it's even remotely consistent with these kinds of decisions.
Honestly, I'm about this close to calling it quits with the NBA. There's no reason to watch if Stern is going to determine the outcome with inconsistent policies on suspensions.

The Wizards thrive in adverse situations. This could help us in an area that is a continued sore spot... rebounds. Dominic McGuire is one of the few Wizards who will jump to meet a rebound. His scoring is not the greatest which mean Pech may get a minute or two. c'mon Stewie, find you shot early! Go Wiz

What did everyone expect. The NBA playoffs have been fixed for over 30 years despite what Wilbon says. Just look at the tapes of the Bullets loss to Seattle in 1979 for the NBA championship. Fouls called galore on all the Bullets starters, yet the Bullet players never committed any fouls. This is typical of the NBA but old news. This is why I do not watch the NBA anymore.
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 1:17 PM
You know what? That's ok. Give it everything you got. Fix the games. Call ticky-tack fouls on us when we so much as sneeze on LeBron. Suspend our players. Do whatever you want. We'll just have to outplay you. That's all. This team plays better with its back against the wall anyway.

not even from the hometown perspective, the integrity of the NBA game has to be questioned. this type stuff just cheapens the game. yes, these guys are great athletes but the league refuses to call basic violations like traveling even on average players. So when it comes to superstars, it's limitless.
at this point it should be widely known that if you touch Lebron he is going to win an Oscar with his response. Maybe the NBA needs to adopt one thing from soccer, as Stern is intent to make this the number sport in the world, give yellow cards for fake injuries and penalties. the accumulation should get a player fined or suspended.

Or LeBaby for his elbow to Blatche's face? Or Z for his hit on Songaila? Oh that's right...Songaila and Blatche didn't drop to floor, writhing in apparent agony after those two hits. Eddie Jordan didn't run out onto the court, rent his shirt in two and fall prostate and weeping at the feet of the officials. Nope. The Wizards don't expect favoritism. They don't get it. I guess that's on us for mannin' up and just playin' ball.

I had to check the calendar to make sure today wasn't April 1st.
If the NBA wants to be perceived in the same way as professional wrestling, the league's leadership is making strong headway toward achieving that goal.
But it's a clean, credible, unbiased league, because they got rid of the one and only blemish on that credibility, Tim Donaghy, last year...

While I'm not in the with the conspiracy theorists, this might be the most ridiculous suspension I've ever seen the league hand out. Especially considering all of the other fouls that have taken place in this series. They must have determined that it was a punch and it was not accidental. Whatever. At the same time, I don't also don't see this as some league engineered ploy to advance Lebron. Songalia helps, but he's not a make or break player for the Wiz. Blatche and probably McGuire are going to have to man up tonight.

Echoing everyone else here - total bs. For those of you who say it is only Darius, there is some truth to that, but Darius brings a steadiness that the team needs from time to time. More importantly given that getting within a foot of LeBron on a drive to the bucket results in a foul on our big men, we are VERY likely to have major foul issues with our frontcourt. Not having another body who knows how to play position defense and rebound (even if he can't jump) could really hurt us. Lebron can get his; we can take the chance that one of their 3 point scrubs gets hot; what we absolutely can't do is give up offensive rebounds, and if we are small, that's a real risk. We lose the offensive board tally by more than 5, we lose for sure.
What I think really happened here is that the league 1) does favor the teams they want to win to some extent but 2) Brown and LeTravel have been effective in making the Wiz antics seem MUCH worse than they are however 3) the Wiz have provided a basis for this perception, exagerrated though it may be, so. . . the league is sending a message to the Wiz that rough stuff against LeBron won't be tolerated, even where, in this case, LeBron largely did cause it himself. I don't think they would have done this if it was Caron or Antawn, but having Darius out of the game does not, per se, doom the wiz.
On the other hand, LeBrown elbow to Blatche's play the next play after Blatche gave him a hard but fair foul was OBVIOUSLY more deliberate than whatever happened with Darius and there is a HUGE double standard.

Are you guys all insane? Look, I'm as big of a Wizards fan as the next guy, but Songaila clearly punched LeBron, intentionally. If you guys have ever played ball before, you would know that that was an intentional foul. I've been playin for almost 25 years, have been tangled up with people multiple times, and have never "accidentally" punched someone in the face. Darius was frustrated, and threw a cheap shot at LeBron. Listen, I would like Darius to play just as much as the rest of you, but that was an absolutely unnecessary punch.

Songalia is a solid role player. Doesn't routinely foul out, makes free throws, hits an open mid-ranger, spells Brendan, and generally doesn't mess things up. He held his position nicely on LeBron's final possession in game five.
Andray is unreliable. He does not defend the 5 well, he often fails to rotate, he gets into foul trouble with some frequency, and is altogether not yet a playoff caliber big man.

I don't think this "incident" got nearly the play it deserved in the national media. Sports Center was on at my gym yesterday and I think I saw the clip of Garnett shoving the ref in Atlanta about 50 times in 30 minutes but not one shot of James taking that "blow" to the chin then holding his NECK like he had just been choked. It's one thing to sell a foul when you think you've been hacked or pushed from behind, but faking an injury to draw a T is just a whole new disgraceful level. I hope before the tip-off tonight one of the Wizards whispers into the King's ear that if he tries to pull any histronics like that tonight then he'd better get off the court because if he stays in he will be injured, even if it means sending out Etan Thomas in street clothes.

3) Ask if Mt. Jackson is available. When your told that he is not, ask if you could please have his voicemail. When the assistant asks for your name, man up and give your real name
4) Leave a *clean* and *tactful* message, expressing your outrage at this decision. *Offer no personal attacks or insults on Stu Jackson.* Leave your real name and a number where he can reach you if he wishes to discuss further.

This is just garbage - you can't actually watch that then think he "punched" lebron - it was barely a bump with the back of his hand - and it was clearly embellisehd by lebron for the cameras - I don't know what you've been playing for 25 years - but it certainly isn't basketball

Another example of how much the NBA wants to see LeBron move on in the playoffs. LeBron=ratings=dollars. The Wizards do not, especially without Arenas. Both sides have been physical in this series. Never a supporter of smallball, but I can see how EJ has been going with Songalia. AB does not have the weight or muscle to handle big Ike, Joe Smith, or Sideshow Bob. He is unable to contest anything and unable to establish position for rebounds. Can someone say "weight room time" all summer long....???
Songalia does not have the length but he bodies up Ike and lets him know he is in there for a fight. Problem is the Cav's front line has too much length for him and AJ when they go small.
I think OPEC should get one more run at the 5. However, I do not see anything in his game and I do not think he is going to pan out as a pro. Nice guy, but I think EJ missed on this one. I have not seen any flashs from him like you do with AB, Nick, or DMac... His "j" is ugly and it never looks like it is "good" when it leaves his hand, ala Roger Mason.
EJ needs to instruct OPEC to just go in and rebound and to not take a shot that is not 10 feet or less. AB needs to start bringing Ike out on the primeter and using his foot speed to drive to the basket, mainly on the baseline. That in turn might get him in foul trouble and benched.
I think if the Wiz take this home game, the Cav's will be in trouble. Remember the Wiz won this game with Mason and AJ not hitting their "j's". If one or both start hitting the Cav's are done.......
Posted by: Bullets Fever #1 | May 2, 2008 1:40 PM
I dunno. Much as I love the Wiz, it did seem like Darius popped Lebron in the head/neck immediately after they untangled. That's generally (if called) reviewable for a suspension. Is it BS, are they coddling King James...who knows? I know we can beat them without him if we get in the flow.
Frankly, I kind of want to see what OPEC can do because you know he's taking his man well away from the basket and will at least make it difficult before fouling the shooter. This may not be such a big deal. Not like we're going to miss Darius' rebounding in this series.
Posted by: Pauly B. | May 2, 2008 1:41 PM

even if he did, hand on someone and taking a swing are two different things. I guess since you are a Wiz fan its okay though. And his hand was not on him because Anderson was talking to the ref.

IT'S THE PRINCIPLE
IT'S THE PRINCIPLE
IT'S THE PRINCIPLE
The only way to rationalize such a horrible decision is to say that it is a cumulative effect kind of thing. They didn't suspend Haywood, Stevenson, or LBJ for their incidents so they took a stand on someone who doesn't really matter. Bold! Wiz just have to sack up and do their thing, no big deal.
Also, who in the hell offered Reggie Miller a job speaking for a living? The guy makes Sam Huff sound coherent. You got to love a guy who literally kicked opposing players, and got the foul call, talking about someone else's extra curricular activities.

That was not intentional. If you watch the you tube video you can tell in slow motion. It's just as Songalia says. Their arms are tangled and when LeBron pulls away, his forearm is underneath Songys' biceps. In his pulling away he lifted Songys' arm.
...and this years Oscar goes to (drumroll) Lebron James!!!
No wonder the refs can make so many bad calls. Even WITH camera replays the NBA league can't see what happens. LOL!
Posted by: Cousin Ray Ray | May 2, 2008 1:44 PM
This is also a message from the league to the refs that "If you're not going to kill the Wizards with calls during the games, we're going to do it after the game. What part of our order to 'favor the Cavs!' did you not understand?!"
Posted by: VeCente115 | May 2, 2008 1:44 PM
Wow...I am a Cavs fan, and yes for that I know I am a horrible person, but come on...both teams are to blame, and it is JUST A GAME...talking about taking out someone's knees is pathetic. I happen to love Caron Butler and Antwan Jamison...they are good players that have been put in bad a situation with all of the DeShawn yapping.. I do admit that DeShawn has been playing a little better on the offensive end lately, but he really needs to get past the "personal issues" with LeBron and MAN UP...And last why blame LeBron for all the attention he gets?? He was drafted and the NBA made him into the face of the league, he didn't ask for it, and now he embraces it and does alot of good with his hometown (I only live 5 miles from Akron). Oh, sorry...one more thing, I think Songalia and James got tangled up and I thought that the refs handled it fine on the court and that the suspension is a little excessive...GO CAVS...

You're 6'9" 260lbs and you're gonna cry like that? He's very good, no doubt, but that act is disturbingly shameful for real basketball fans.
For those true Cavs fan, can you really honestly say those hard fouls are worthy of suspension? Those are playoff fouls, get used to them. If so, Cleveland is much more worthlessly softer than I thought...just like LeTravel.
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 1:46 PM
Message from the NBA: don't even get in LeTravel's way when he's going for a layup or dunk - or else you will get suspended.
And yes the zebras will call what they want to call, and you can not complain about it or you will get suspended too - except Cavs don't get suspended, just the Wiz.
Cleveland players do :grabbing, tripping, shoving, clotheslining, clocking, elbowing the Wizards.
Guess what? I haven't heard any crying from the Wizards players yet - so far it's all Brown and his boys.
Oh yeah smirks from the Cavs when they get away with their nonsense and the Wiz get called for fouls - watch your dvrs and pay attention to LeTravel, Smith, Gibson & West. Yes, it's all part of the NBA show particularly at playoffs.

Right. The NBA is trying to fix this game by taking out Songaila, the beast that he is and all. Give me a break. There has been a lot of contact this whole series and I think the league is finally saying, ok, we need to stop this right now before it breaks out into a brawl. And I don't buy the story that it was an accident or whatever. It was pretty clear it was a blatant hand check to the face. Then Jordan steals one out of the Rove playbook with, "it was actually Lebron's fault". How many times do the Cavs have to knock the Wizards out of the playoffs before Wizards coaches, players and fans stop making excuses? They've got the talent to win if they would just follow Caron and Antawn and play like men.
Posted by: GD75 | May 2, 2008 1:49 PM
The Cavs fans on this site are a joke and a half. To think that Cavs fans can actually complain about any part of the officiating is just plain comical in itself.
They must have the 'LeTravel Syndrome' where they must get 100% of the calls each and every time or else....
Posted by: Brickjp | May 2, 2008 1:49 PM
Songaila's not complaining or crying or acting, not like another 6'9" player we all know.
Did he cry about Ilgauska's smash to his face, no he mentioned it, but is NOT COMPLAINING about the no-call.
Did he complain about Ilgauskas shoving him into LeTravel, no he mentioned it but is NOT COMPLAINING about the no-call.
CAVS and their fans whine, and Stern/Jackson gang piss in their britches.

The suspension of Darius Songaila for that played up "shot" that he gave LeBron is a joke! It's another attempt at the NBA to ensure that their marquee player(s) get deeper into the playoffs.
Stern, if you were tricked by LeBron's antics after watching several replays of this, you should be ashamed!
Clearly their arms were tangled, and clearly LeBron lifted his arm up extremely quickly, pushing Songaila's hand right into his own chin...then, LeBron continued to play it up, by grabbing his throat of all things...Songaila's hand never got near his throat...
You can hear the SportsCenter clips after the game, and all the post-game remarks about this, as the analysts laugh it off, as they clearly know that this was another attempt by LeBron to get exactly what he got...another Wizard suspended!

Also let's not forget the reason the Cavs have home court advantage is because of the "quirky" ending to their second to last game against the Sixers, where Big Z pushed his man into LBJ to get the after-the-game-was-over free throws.
Oh and then LBJ gets the post-game flagrant in game one.
Oh and then Songalia gets the post-game ejection.

This is great, even if Lebron wins this series he's already lost an immeasurable amount of respect amongst fans of this league. His true lack of charisma and starpower has finally been revealed. His personality is awful. His commercials are horrific. I'm glad he's a big guy who can bowl over defenders after taking 4 steps to the basket and whine after he rams into someone with their feet clearly planted because he got grazed on his goat-looking face. Enjoy for another year or so Cleveland. In truth I hope Lebron stays there so that neither he or you losers ever get a title.

Cleveland=Armpit,
Thank you for getting me a plaque. It is very much appreciated. With that said, there is absolutely no reason to be a douche bag just because i have a dissenting opinion. My reason for stating my intricate knowledge and experiences with the game of basketball was to prove a point, that Songaila meant to smack/hit/punch (whatever you want to call it) LeBron in the face. However, there is absolutely NO WAY to get tangled up and end up hitting someone else in the face. This is a ridiculous notion.
Again, I am a die hard Wizards fan, have gone to almost every game this season, and would like more than anything for Songaila to be out there tonight, but he should know better than that.

Serious question to Cavs fans who think this is justified:
Would you rather be elbowed directly in the face by an athletic 6'9 260 lb guy?
Or would you rather be incidentally slapped on the top of your head by some unathletic white guy's slowly moving open hand.
Actually you guys are so in love with Lebron that you'd probably choose the elbow just to be touched by The Chosen One. LMAO idiots.

Jordan: Pistons Tried To Hurt Me Chicago's Michael Jordan, the National Basketball Association's leading scorer, claims the Detroit Pistons deliberately tried to hurt him. Jordan made his strong comments after the Bulls' 115-99 fight-marred victory over the Pistons on Saturday night.

Can we also please get LeTravel suspended for his Flagrant 1 foul on Blatche? No? It must be one-sided then.
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 2:03 PM
I cant believe all of the whiny crybaby Wiz fans out there. Songalia would have never been suspended if Deshawn Stevenson would have kept his mouth shut just played the game and he hit him on purpose... you all are blind!
Posted by: Wiz330 | May 2, 2008 2:03 PM
Don't you get it? Whether it is Songaila or not getting the minutes, the suspension is not justified!

He acts tough but I bet he would get his ass beat if he was in a real fight, judging by how he's reacted to a tap in the face.

I'm 30 years old. I have been a NBA fanatic for the last 18 years. The NBA has always been my favorite sport, and its not even close. I've always been a defender of the NBA on every level and every issue. But I'm just not so sure anymore. Maybe I'm just getting older, but the league is really starting to turn me off.
LeBron sucks, and his team is even worse, and I'm sick and tired of the league pushing him on us when he's not ready for it. All this acting on his part and with this JayZ BS - I mean this guy wears #23 and wants to be great, but I never, EVER saw this kind of behavior from Magic, Larry, and MJ. Jordan got his butt whooped by the Pistons and he got right back up and got in their face - the guy never showed any weakness out on the court, just go back and look at the video footage.
LeBron is a big cry baby and I'm sick and tired of the inconsistent calls by the referees and the league office. Please define what a walk/traveling violation is and please be consistent about it. A team's entire season can end (Wiz in '06 playoffs) because of a non-call on a clear traveling violation.
KG forcefully elbows a ref and its okay, but if Dennis Rodman or Van Exel does it they're suspended for 6 games. Celtics bench players steps onto the court and its okay, but if the Suns do it they suspend their best player. I'm sick of this - the league is a freaking joke with their superstar rules. David Stern are you listening? You better be because you're losing one of your biggest fans and who knows how many more because of the garbage officiating and league rulings!

Lebron did get called for hitting blatche in the face with his elbow..After the league reviwed it, they slapped him with a flag1...
I thought Haywood should have been suspended the game after he was ejected form the game, but the league reviewed it and and thought the ejections was enough.
The league reviewed this play and said, he that guy hit another player in the face well after the play was over. In my opinion, which you are all free to disagree, and i am sure you do, it was a good call.
Posted by: cavs.fan | May 2, 2008 2:08 PM
"and he hit him on purpose... you all are blind!"
You mean just like Lebron hit Andray Blatche in the face with his elbow in retaliation for what was clearly incidental contact?
Posted by: | May 2, 2008 2:08 PM
Serious question to Cavs fans who think this is justified:
Would you rather be elbowed directly in the face by an athletic 6'9 260 lb guy?
Or would you rather be incidentally slapped on the top of your head by some unathletic white guy's slowly moving open hand.
Actually you guys are so in love with Lebron that you'd probably choose the elbow just to be touched by The Chosen One. LMAO idiots.
You are the idiot...all Cavs fans are not like that...and why does it have to be "white guy"? Why can't it be slow or something a little less racial...I for one thought Blatche deserved it since he did it to LeBron 1st...It's a contact sport, and if you watch, LeBron isn't the only one whining after every call....BOTH TEAMS WHINE...And I would actually rather be smacked...that was a silly question....

Posted by: kwamesnani | May 2, 2008 2:10 PM
Wow. I am furious. I used to not buy into the idea that the refs and league managment were somehow in collusion to get the most marketable teams into the finals. This call has destroyed what faith I had in the integrety of the refs and NBA managment.
If I knew it would be printed, you would instead be reading a post with wildly colorful language.
Posted by: KayBee | May 2, 2008 2:11 PM
i dont think this decision will break our backs but i do think it's this kind of inconsistency from the league that turns off casual viewers. i know it's
i think this is one of the prime examples of the problems the nba brings on itself.

Posted by: TonySoprano | May 2, 2008 2:12 PM
As a wizards fan, I'm admittedly biased, but from the video it looks pretty obvious that Songalia only hit lebron in the face because lebron used his elbow to make him do so.
It seems to me as if LeBron was aware of the "no hits to Lebron's face" warning that the Wiz were given, and did his best to make that happen.

Posted by: Mike | May 2, 2008 2:13 PM
Darius Songaila was a key player Wednesday night.
When he played within his game (i.e not trying to score a reverse layup against Z) he was in fact flawless... 4-4 FTs, hitting an open jumper at a point in the game when the rest of the team could not find the basket with a flashlight, battling for rebounds, moving himself and the ball the Princeton weave etc...
Obviously Andray Blatche has a way higher upside than Darius. Tonight he is going to have to show it.
All that said, I have never seen an NBA playoff suspension like this one ... virtually no coverage I read of the game anticipated it or foreshadowed it... so it is a bit out of left field, yes?

Can't have a punch without a closed fist.
You aren't really going to compare what was clearly a flagrant foul during the run of play by DS. Stevenson did make a play on the ball after all...to a retaliatory elbow to the face away from the ball, are you?
Also, both of those calls were actually made in the game. Assessing a flagrant foul after the game did absolutely nothing but even up the books a little bit.

Posted by: Sean | May 2, 2008 2:17 PM
Uh ... no. By NBA rule, if a player throws a punch in a game he is automatically ejected. Not only was Songaila not ejected, he didn't even get a flagrant foul. That same rule defines a punch as a blow with a closed fist. Songaila's hand was clearly open when the back of it struck (more like grazed) James.

Maybe the suspension is a littler much..but i thought it was well after the play..did james bring songaila's arm towards his face..yeah, could songaila taken a step back from james instead of following him after the whistle and avoided that, probably...Do i think if this were game 1 songaila would be suspended for that. no..do i think after all the hard fouls that clearly are not going for the ball that the league wanted to make it clear that you have foul when going for the ball and that they will take action when you are going for the player...yes.
Posted by: cavs.fan | May 2, 2008 2:19 PM
haha, nice picture James caught in the act. It is clearly, undoubtedly intentional. No way is that raised elbow a reflex action or involved in the shot in any way, form or manner. I supposed Blatche should have fallen to the floor, cried out in tears, and dragged out on a stretcher before Stern/Jackson gang will do anything about it.
BTW - Blatche held his jaw for a moment, and then carried on. He did not for one moment complain, whine or cry.

I am sure that since you Wizards are soooooooooo much better than the Cavs and that since Lebron is sooooooooo overated that there is no way the Wizards can lose another game.
Actually I think the way the Wizards have trash talked and to play "Basket-Foot-ball" they will have no problems winning tonight. Just knock down Mr. OVERATED a few more times.

This is playoff basketball, it is rough. You never saw MJ complain when the Bad Boys beat the crap out of him. He just worked harder. LeCrybaby Jane would never have survived the Bad Boys or the Pat Riley Knicks the way the real #23 did. BTW, MJ still owns Cleveland.
Posted by: WakeUp | May 2, 2008 2:28 PM
I tried the suggestion from a previous post to call the NBA office. I was continuously put on hold and forwarded to an already-full voice mail. I watch college BBall for this exact reason... to many what appear to be easy calls or no calls missed... like the final drive of James in game 5 where he was begging for a foul from Songaila, who was standing with his hands up. The continuing walking and whining of James make the series almost unwatchable... I was in San Antonio watching B-Bow hold and slap Stee Nash... and he was called an agressive defender and a defensive stopper. You can't breathe near James without havibg a foul called. When's Redskins minicamp!
Posted by: C-town... | May 2, 2008 2:28 PM
Another grade A example of the double standard for fouls in the NBA: one set of rules for the stars, another for everybody else.
The contact Songaila made was clearly accidental. The replay shows without a doubt that Darius' arm is tangled up with Lebron, and makes contact with Lebron after Lebron starts raising his own arm to get untangled.
If Songaila is suspended for an accidental slap, why isn't Lebron out for a clearly intentional elbow to Blatche's face in Game 1? Unbelievable.
Posted by: toughjuice3 | May 2, 2008 2:28 PM
This is the type of crap which makes the nba infuriating and then unwatchable - it is blatantly obvious that the league office and officials are in the tank for LeBron. Ratings, yet again, are more important than the integrity of the game. TERRIBLE!

You must be shrooming. Every time LeBron drives to the basket, he drops his shoulder and charges into the person defending him. The one or two times he actually gets called for it, he puts on the trademark "scowl." To turn around and bash the opposing team for "playing physical basketball" is the definition of hypocrisy.

Has anyone seen my Yankees hat?
Posted by: LeBron James | May 2, 2008 2:35 PM
This is a prime example of why the NBA is accused of being fixed. There were at least 4 other flagrant fouls (Heywood in Game 2, Lebron's elbow on Blatche in Game 1, Verajao's take down of Blatche in Game 2, and Stevenson's flagrant foul in Game 4) that were far worse than the accidental contact.....LeBron is a total crybaby who didn't even know where he was hit after the play.
I can't use the colorful language I'd like to on this blog, but the NBA and Stu Jackson should be ashamed....they've essentially deprived a shorthanded team of one of its 8 rotation players in an effort to rectify mistakes made earlier in the series by the league office. Suspend LeBron for tonight for elbowing Blatche in the face if you're going to suspend Songaila, but you can't have it both ways.
Posted by: wizfan89 | May 2, 2008 2:36 PM
Biggest loser from this suspension: LeBron. The incident is going to get replayed over and over on all the talking-head sports shows. To create some friction and boost ratings, half of the "analysts" are going to have to take the "LeBron is a faker" side. LeBron is going to come away looking pathetic and weak.

If you don't like the truth that you have accused rapist on your team...I can't blame you. At least it was against your players not their mom...

I am a huge wizards fan but when I read this blog or go to games I am ashamed to be one. We have some of the worst fans in basketball. Songalia sucks!! Stu Jackson and the league made the right call. Wizards fans are all one sided. The haywood flagrant 2 earlier in the series was ridiculous but this I understand. Intentional or not he hit him in the face which is a one game suspension. Quit crying and play the game

After we win tonight I will be hosting the after party with my special guests Troop #33 from the Washington area Girl Scouts. It will be ending at 10 oclock since most of the girls parents will be picking them up from my house around that time.

I want to say "unbelievable," but unfortunately this is just par for the course for the NBA. Too bad. Let's hope Andray steps it up.
