Lawson workout

Ty Lawson's workout with the Wizards was cut short this morning when he tweaked his left ankle. Lawson, who is an early entry candidate out of North Carolina, is projected as a possible late first round pick.

The other players who worked out today were forward D.J. White (Indiana), guard Mike Green (Butler), foward Othella Hunter (Ohio State), forward James Mays (Clemson) and forward Walter Sharpe (UAB).

Lawson, who has already worked out for Cleveland and Indiana and plans on visiting Denver and either Sacramento or Portland, said he didn't think the injury was serious.

The Wizards, who hold the 18th and 47th picks in the June 26 draft, will continue to workout prospects this week and into next week.

Curse starts early eh?

GA and AD would at least learn to play against little guys, going against Lawson every day in practice.

Long term, however, I don't see Lawson being good for us.

Besides Lawson, why are we working out so many scrubs? Where are all the potential first round picks?

Posted by: ? | June 9, 2008 4:20 PM

I have this feeling EG is going to make a trade which will move us down either in late 1st or early 2nd.

I hope your right BK. we need someone who can jump for rebounds...I hope D-Mac is our solution. I still think about that game where he had around 15 or so.

Why don't the Wiz package Gil and the 18th pick and send them to Miami for the #2 spot? Whichever guy we end up with will be a perfect fit. Arenas and Wade can't coexist in the same backcourt, so I don't think it will come back to bite us.

doclinkin posted this up on the wizardsblog forum, it's a video of Veremeenko. Slide the bar down a bit, at the very end. Portland wanted him, but Washington got the rights.

any word on if lawson's recent arrest will affect interest in him?

A guy that's not getting alot of attention in this draft is Joe Alexander. It might be a stretch to think he'll slip to 18, but he's a name to keep an eye on.

The guy's got a sweet stroke and could in time be a deadly three baller of the bench. He's played anywhere from a 2 to center in college. The kind of player that would be a sweet cutter in the Princeton.

He sure looked rugged enough in the NCCA's to play at the next level. My quess is he goes from 12-15, but there's always a head scratcher or two in that area of the NBA draft. He's a guy that could possibly fall in the Wiz's lap if there's a couple of baffling moves.

Ernie likes shooters, can't see him passing on that one if he's available regardless of how many of the bigs are out there.

The Wiz can draft Lawson and him and Blatche can go 50-50...on a driver!

Posted by: GM | June 9, 2008 7:12 PM

Just looked at a couple of mock drafts (NBAdraft.net and Chad Ford) and if we take Donte Greene or Javale McGee with Hibbert or Lopez still on the board, it won't be a happy draft night for this Bullets fan.

"Ray - look at the draft. It's rich with good, quality big men in the middle to Late first round - with NO quality Point Guards."

That's the thing, does EG draft yet another big body from overseas and they sit a year or two take Lawson and hopes he finds the steal of the draft?

The Wiz are log jammed at the SG and big men. I could see them looking to find a backup for Jamsion but thier real need is PG. When Daniels went down the Wiz had NOBODY that could run the offense....not ONE person.

A lot of people want Hibbert for obvious reasons but personally I hope they take Lawson with that first pick, barring a trade, and then use that second pick on Gist from UMD to back up Jamison. Both of those guys are gonna make an NBA roster, it may as well be here.

Thanks for that video link Doc, not sure how much it shows about Veremeenko. I think that guy is future trade bait and EG drafted him with the intention for that like he did JCN.

If they draft any big men I hope it's someone who can contribute off the bench immediately. I wasn't too impressed with Pech this past season, and the jury is still out on Blatche...oops! ;)

I'd love to see them trade Thomas, and yes he's always hurt, but no one is going to touch him now.

EG definately has his work cut out for him, but he always seem to figure things out. Wait and see I guess.

Darrell Arthur if he lasts to 18.

Ty Lawson is about as good as we could do at 18, I think.

Here's a weird idea: trade the second round pick to the Lakers for the rights to Sun Yue, the Chinese 6'9" point guard. They took him at 40 last year but didn't sign him.

Hibbert in the 1st round

A backup SF in the 2nd (Calathes, Ewing Jr.)

Sign Sean Singletary for summer league (3rd pg)

Posted by: Darnell | June 10, 2008 3:20 AM

I wouldn't be mad at Lawson. But I'd rather go for Hibbert. I just think to get a player with his combination of size and skill is rare, especially at 18!

And I don't think there is that much difference between Lawson and Singletary, and in fact Singletary could be a better fit for our offense and the role we need (3rd string). If we can get Singletary later (2nd round or undrafted), then why use our 1st round pick on Lawson??

Hibbert's absolute worst case he's another Aaron Gray or Greg Ostertag. Best case he ends up being the next Arvydas Sabonis. More likely he's another Ilgauskas. To get that at 18 would be too good to pass up! Plus considering he is one of the players in the entire draft best prepared to contribute immediately, and the uncertainties concerning Etan Thomas, taking Hibbert is a no brainer!!

Veremeenko looks better than pecherov will ever be. We should package pecherov and the 18th pick for something that will help us now instead of another project.

GM-No chance Joe Alexander falls to us....I wish he would but no chance. He is a workout freak....he benched 185 like 24 times had like a 6'11 wingspan and was like the 3rd best leaper out of all the predraft camp guys. What he did at the end of the season and with his workouts I bet he goes top 10....If he drops at all he wont get past golden state at 14. Dcmann-also find it hard to believe darrell arthur falls to 18 but thats would be amazing he would be perfect for us.

A convenient jumping point to see what all the websites see as who's taking who is this NBA page:
http://www.nba.com/draft2008/board/mock.html
Click on each website to see what their picks are from 1-30 and then most of them also have second round picks.

Alexander and Arthur will be long gone before the Wizards draft, but neither have the size to be an effective 4 right now. I don't understand everyone's fascination with Ty Lawson - he's short, has no jump shot, and will be available early in the 2nd round. Mario Chalmers who is a couple inches taller is a much better all around player. I still see the Wiz picking between Hibbert and R. Lopez for No. 18 if they don't trade the pick.

The Wiz still get swept by LeBron and the CAVS next year.

Posted by: Skip in VA | June 10, 2008 7:17 PM

the Wizards were swept by the cavs not beause of the LBJ yes he played a large role the wiards were swept mainly because of the fact that ib that series alone they gave up way too many 3 point shooting at high percentage and Eddie Jordan's theory on defense is that colgging the middle but at the same time you can;t allow teams who have good 3 point shooters if you play like that you have to take the passing angles and make sure the ball does not get to the 3point shooters.
