The Song Is Over ...

... it's all behind me. We started this blog on April 5, more than three months ago, and it'll be shutting down very soon. What else is there to say? Well, first, thank you. Thanks to: - The readers and the commenters. It was especially gratifying to see some people turn into regular commenters -- WOW, delantero, futebol fan, deanna come to mind, but I'm sure I'm forgetting others. Like K Moon -- what ever happened to him?...

All-Tournament Team

We're working on an all-World Cup team for publication over the weekend. Here are some nominees by position. Who would you pick as your best XI? GK: Buffon, Lehmann D: Cannavaro, Grosso, Lahm, Marquez, Thuram, Zambrotta MF: Ballack, Essien, Frings, Pirlo, Ribery, Maniche, Maxi Rodriguez, Riquelme, Cristiano Ronaldo, Vieira, Zidane F: Henry, Klose, Robben, Ronaldo...

Get Psyched Up for Ghana

Our own Camille Powell, last seen ogling Dolce & Gabanna billboards, will be online at 1 p.m. Wednesday for World Cup chat. A good time to talk about the U.S.-Ghana game (Camille was just at Ghana training) and other stuff. During the game, I will do live updates here for those of you chained to the computer ... likely from a local eating/drinking establishment (anyone have suggestions on a place where I can sit down and set up my laptop with a good view of both Group E games and a good amount of nutso fans? I'll need good cell phone reception so my aircard works ... no more repeats of the embassy debacle!). Steve Goff will do his usual look-back-at-the-U.S.-game chat on Friday, time TBD as of now....

Here We Go ...

Well, that was a long wait -- about three years and 11 months since any of us watched a World Cup match. Here's the plan for today, Web-wise: - Jason La Canfora will chat from 10 to 11 a.m. - I will be right here with frequent updates from the Germany-Costa Rica opener. - Technology permitting, Jason will give us an audio report after the game. - Jason and Steven Goff, who will be at Ecuador-Poland, will file early game stories, as well. Hopefully, you guys will enjoy the coverage. We're open to suggestions (for the Web coverage and the dead-tree version); let me know what you think either by dropping a note in the comments or at denunzioj(at)washpost.com. PS--So far, I am two office pools and two player pick 'em pools (including The Post's -- I'm AC Nunz). Who is in the most pools? Anyone try the BBC's World...

Injuries and Fantasy

Ok, business first: If you haven't seen it yet, soccer fan Frank T. at Post.com has designed a cool fantasy game for the World Cup. Enter and enjoy. Camille, Jason and I are all planning to play; see how much better you can do than me. I assume you have seen the big news of the day: Germany F Michael Ballack will miss the opener....

Online Coverage Update

The Post's online World Cup coverage is up and running. Check it out, and let us know what you think. Also, Steve Goff will chat tomorrow. Finally, this blog's run -- originally slated to end when the World Cup began -- has been extended. I'll be here throughout the Cup, and plan on doing lots of live updates during the U.S. games -- and some other key matches -- throughout. The name will change ("World Cup Journal"), but the URL should stay the same. Also, for those of you who can't get your hands on our dead-tree World Cup preview section that published today, here's the online version....

The Stretch Run

Ok, after a nice holiday weekend off, it's time to get geared up for the Cup. If you're curious what's going on inside The Post's Soccer Central (aka "at my desk"), today most of the stories for the World Cup preview section are due. I'll be editing those over the next couple days, as well as planning some other stories you'll see in the paper over the next 10 days. Steve Goff leaves for Germany on Thursday, and Camille Powell and Jason LaCanfora leave Sunday. It's really hitting all of us that the big event is upon us ... Enough about us. Here are a couple newsy items I've spotted recently: - Injuries: Spain's Xabi Alonso, Italy's Gianluca Zambrotta, England's Michael Owen (!!), Holland's Rafael Van der Vaart, - Good news on the injury front for the Czechs (bad for the U.S., I suppose). Also good news for Tunisia's Hamed...

Better Late Than Never

My man Steve Goff did his every-other-week soccer chat a little while ago. It's over now, but you can still read the transcript. In fact, I urge you to do so! A highlight: Pikesville, Md.: Steven,I'm still waiting for a US forward other than McBride to stake a claim to the other starting spot this summer. Do you think Bruce might use Donovan in a more withdrawn forward role? Steven Goff: You read my mind. My ultimate lineup (AT THE MOMENT) would have McBride as the target forward, Donovan withdrawn, Reyna in a central role, Mastroeni at defensive midfield, Beasley on the left, Dempsey on the right and a backline of Lewis, Onyewu, Pope/Gibbs/Bocanegra and Cherundolo in front of Keller. While I'm pimping other webstuff, let me say SF Chronicle TV critic Tim Goodman's blog 1) is fantastic, 2) has nothing to do with soccer, and 3) is fantastic. If...

Weekend Update

This Sunday, we are hoping to start a weekly World Cup Notebook in the dead-tree Post. Working out exactly what should be in it. Steve Goff will write it. Here are some things we are batting around: - U.S. team update. This is a must, I figure. - Quick-hitting tidbits of import about other teams. Kinda a condensed version of what I try to do here, for the dullards who aren't coming to "RTTWC" daily ... - Good News/Bad News: A databox with, say, two countries that got good news in the past week, and two that got bad news (ie., Good News: Italy assured that Buffon is healthy; Bad News: Ecuador's No. 1 goalkeeper gave up four in a club match Wednesday.) - This Week's Sign that the World Cup is Upon Us: The weirdest cup-related item we find. Like this item from last week. The nice thing about...
