DeLay Indicted
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's indictment yesterday in a prompted a swift riff across the washingtonpost.com talk-o-sphere. I found some interesting comments from our readers beyond the expected talking points.
Caveman takes the long and patient view. "Don't get too giddy yet folks. This still has to work its way through court and possibly honest prosecutors...Drink a glass of wine today celebrating the indictment and save the champagne for an upheld conviction."
Napactivist isn't quite sure what to make of DeLay's public comments on the indictment, writing, "So Tommy Boy is all defiant about how the conviction was due to a crazed prosecutor who is a partisan zealot, but isn't the Texas Grand Jury Judge the one who is responsible for the decision? Is the Judge a partisan zealot, too? What am I missing here?"
Uh, you're missing page 43 from the best seller "Partisan Zealots Ate My Homework--101 Plausible Denials." Required reading, man.
The jokesters also came out.
DavidJerome writes, "I don't think its fair to use political partisan tactics against someone who is not a political partisan. Here you have a very non-partisan guy, being attacked by a partisan prosecutor. Hardly seems right."
Glee over DeLay's indictment is actually not about partisanship, argues stillreading. "Lots of Republicans are glad to see the back of this guy. Maybe not House freshmen, but plenty of other Republicans who have been smelling the guy's stench for years."
There was even some criticism of Washington's Favorite Newspaper: "Why does the Washington Post continue to print the fiction that David Dreier didn't get the Majority Leader's position because he's too 'moderate?'," asks Brittman. "Your reporters know better. Dreier didn't get the job because he's G-A-Y. So is Ken Mehlman, the chairman of the RNC and Daniel Gurley, the finance director of the Republican National Committee. Yes -- the gay bashing Republican Party is run by queers. How weird is that? And why does The Post ignore the subject? Your readers aren't stupid, and this is a legitimate issue."

If the case gets to court, Who Be Da Judge?

manderson1904:
Look at your own post. Full of hate. I guess that leaves you out of the "morally conscious right".
You forget that the morally conscious right thought a president who lied in a deposition about sex committed an impeachable offense but a president who lied to start a war that has killed thousands of Americans and Iraqis is, well, what is it manderson1904? Morality is earned through actions, not self appointment.
And please, the liberal/communist label went out with the Oldsmobile. American capitalists are toasting their Chinese business partners in Beijing. Maybe we should be talking about those republican/capitalist/communist executives?

They are celebrating in Sugarland tonight. The talk going around Austin legal circles is that the charges will be dismissed against Delay and his buddies before Thanksgiving. The Republicans and conservative democrats are running the show. For those of you not from Texas, conservative democrats are what Republicans used to be called in Texas. While they don't always love Tom Delay, they despise Ronnie Earle.
Ronnie is a throwback to an earlier time. He is completely honest and cannot understand people like Delay who bend the rules to fit their purpose. Trouble is Ronnie is not a very good attorney and his staff is minor league at best.
The real problem for Ronnie is not having the indictments dismissed and looking like a fool again. It's that second grand jury that said no. Apparently one of the grand jurors has gone to a Judge and told the list Ronie showed them as "evidence" was different then the one he showed in a hearing where the prosecuters admitted they didn't have the list spelled out in the indictment.
That is not good, and DeGuerin is ready to press the new Judge to start an investigation of Ronnie's conduct with all the grand juries. The AG's office can't wait to get an indictment of Ronnie Earle, and if they are lucky, Judge Perkins.
This will kill our ability to press the Republicans on any ethical matters. We are going to get killed if Delay walks away and there is even a hint of a conspiricy to get Delay.
Delay knows he loses if this ever gets to trial, even if he is not found guility. His only hope is to destroy Ronnie. I think Ronnie's hope was to get it to trial. He knew he had an iffy case tying Delay to this so-called crime, but if he got a good jury, they might see the corruption, and forgive his lack of hard evidence. He knew Judge Perkins would not recuse himself this time and he also knew Judge Perkins would keep the trial in Travis County. He also knew there was no way in hell they could remove Judge Perkins if the Perkins didn't agree to recuse himself. That never happens.
Unfortunately, Ronnie forgot that Republicans control Texas, and especially the Courts. Now the Republicans control the case, and unless Ronnie has an air-tight case, then he is doomed. Without the so called document, "list" as specified in the indictment, his case is really weak that there was a crime. Now his only witness is a Republican who said he saw lots of lists and there might have been one. Not good.
If more then one list was used in these grand juries, then Ronnie Earle could find himself investigated, even if he did nothing wrong. His only hope in my opinion is that the Supreme Court bails him out and the case is dismissed. God forbid Ronnie cut some corners and played some game with the "list" or somehow mislead the grand jurors.
My legal buddies tell me they won't unlock or investigate a grand jury on this kind of stuff. They also told me there was no way Perkins wouldn't be the Judge. Never happen they said.
They don't know the power of people like Delay and men so rich they have no rules. If this plays out like I think, it will cost us the 2006 elections.
I am very depressed.

Letter to all La Bond Commission Members,
Dear Bond Commission Member,
In Louisiana, a state drowning in water and political corruption, money continues to flow like water to build Reservoirs.
While citizens statewide are fighting building 14 new Reservoirs, Hurricane Katrina breached a levee, and a man made reservoir flooded and destroyed New Orleans.
The October 20, 2005 Bond Commission meeting lists $ 3.2 Million for Reservoirs while money has been rescinded for many worthwhile projects.
Will Reservoirs continue to be one of our top priorities, and a foolish waste of our tax money? With the budget problems Louisiana faces this money is badly needed elsewhere.
Should the old and poor suffer, and taxpayers spend $40 million to $50 million a lake to make developers wealthy? Will Louisiana change it's foolish ways, and Politics as usual?
With Louisiana's budget problems it is foolish to fund projects requiring continued funding year after year that we can't afford.
The proposed Washington parish Reservoir will desecrate cemeteries, and take the homes of the old and poor. It is not too late to stop the waste of money on this foolish project before construction begins.
Please, stop the waste of taxpayers' money for unneeded foolish pork barrel reservoirs.
Sincerely,
James Moore

In response to Virginia's post of Nov. 4 ~
Virginia Said: Destroy your countrymen with crazy legal fights instead of helping build a better stronger America!!!
If the Republicans were not performing crazy legal fights over sex in the White House, then we would have the Twin Towers still - but wait, then we wouldn't have a reason to invade Iraq - but wait, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 - but wait, we can still tie it in somehow...
Bush is our "leader" and supposed to lead by example. So, if he wants Americans to help with "building a better stronger America" then why is he spending BILLIONS of $$$ trying to "build a better stronger Iraq?" Oh yea, they are responsible for 9/11, ooops

I think you all are a bunch of communist/leftwingers who like to sling mud (among other things) at the morally conscious right....... You enjoy playing the blame game as long as you are not in the cross-hairs...... You all need to let go of your misguided hate and realize that your s*it does in fact stink......
